Objectives

Assessments

1. Students will learn the process of clay monotype printing through demonstration and personal practice.

1. Students will be able to display their understanding of the clay monotype printing process through an oral review led primarily by students, and production of final piece.

2. Students will create a print utilizing a plethora of lines and shapes to show the principles of repetition and variety.

2. Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles of repetition and variety by using at least 3 different shapes and 2 different lines.

Materials: Pellon, rollers, clay, pastel, colored slip, paint brushes, spray bottles, adhesive wallpaper tape, stencils, water cups, premade clay boards, aprons, newsprint, garbage bags, wet paper towels, spoons, sketching paper, pencils, and water. Anticipatory Set What do you see in this image? (holding examples of clay monotype prints). What is being used to create this picture (i.e.: specific lines and shapes)?

Activating Prior Knowledge: Ask students to reflect on previous lessons about a variety of lines and shapes and how were used simultaneously to create an abstract image.

Procedure: Teacher Actions

Student Actions

Closure: While looking at images: “What did you learn today? How did you use variety and repetition in your picture? What was your favorite part?

Additional Concept Related Activity: The students will be able to work into their pictures using oil pastels, or further the lesson into a themed unit such as landscapes. Also the students will be able to take their printing plate, the clay, and turn it into a vase and have it fired, creating sculpture to match an print that they have created.

Clay Monotype Printing Process 1. After the clay has been put into boards and leveled, a base layer of white slip is put on and let stand to dry. 2. After about three coats have been put on and dry, the application of slip and may begin. 3. Once the design has been set after using stencils, or free form, you must inlay. a. Inlaying takes place before starting the final printing process. b. This is done by placing a piece of newsprint over picture and gently rolling over the picture. i. If the slip isn’t thick enough apply pastels first and do the inlay, then apply the slip and print after application. 4. Now, spray the wallpaper tape, and apply to edges of the image, or where ever you feel fit for cropping. 5. Spray both the picture and the paper gently. (The paper only on one side) 6. Lay the paper over top the image, wet side down, and begin to gently roll over paper. a. After about every 5-10 rolls, check roll back the image half way and see how the image is transferring. If the image needs more work in an area, spray it some more and repeat step 6 until the image is fully transferred. 7. After the completed transfer has been pulled completely off the clay, hang, or set on table and allow for it to dry.
