MEDIA AWARD RECIPIENT
John Oliva, a reporter at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, has been selected for this year’s TSPRA Media Award. This award is given annually to a print or broadcast journalist whose work has made a positive impact in informing the public of education issues and in communicating the good news about public education.
Oliva covers education, breaking news, solutions journalism, and features. A Del Mar College graduate, he was the editor-in-chief of the college’s Foghorn News for nearly two years.

During his work covering education for the Caller-Times, Oliva frequently visited schools throughout the Coastal Bend, telling the stories of dedicated public school students and staff.
According to the nomination by Leanne Libby, APR, Chief Communications Officer for Corpus Christi ISD, no matter the story, John approaches his work as a true professional while also embracing opportunities to share the good, especially when it came to fine arts, which is sometimes overlooked when it comes to coverage.
“We are grateful for the strong media relations we enjoy in our district,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez, Corpus Christi ISD. “Reporters like John are essential to sharing the many wonderful stories happening every day in public schools, as well as helping us share time-sensitive information with our families and the community.”
Texas School Public Relations Association President Rebecca Villarreal, APR, Fellow PRSA, surprised him in January with the news that he has been named the statewide organization’s media award winner for 2023.

“John is a product of public schools and has taken every opportunity to share the good news happening in education in his role as a reporter,” said Villarreal. “His work has made a positive impact in informing the public about education, and we are thrilled to honor him with this statewide award.”
