Changing Seasons

Home & Patio By Chris Bavender

Get the quality outdoor funiture you’ve been looking for at prices you could only dream about.

T

here’s just something about sitting outside, an icy beverage in hand, and just relaxing that is so appealing. That’s where Changing Seasons can help – providing patio furniture. The already existing patio shop, which opened in the late ‘80’s, was bought in 1997 by Pat and David Wallace. Today, Pat and her son. Bryan Hughes, run the store. He takes care of sales, marketing, pricing, assembly and delivery. Pat does sales, bookkeeping, assembly and deliveries. “We offer replacement cushions and fabrics for most high fashion patio furniture. We also install sling fabric and some painting,” Hughes said. “We sell high quality, high fashion, mostly made in the USA outdoor furniture, fire pits and accessories.” The business motto – “Get the quality outdoor furniture you’ve been looking for at prices you could only dream about.” “For whatever reasons, I feel like it’s more common to invest in the outdoor space of your home these days. This might be for economic reasons, logistical reasons, I’m not sure,” Hughes said. “What I am sure of is that in order for this investment to pay off, you must have outdoor furniture that not only looks great but can stand up to the elements. This is Indiana. Try putting your indoor sofa outside and

see how long it lasts. What we sell is designed to fit all of these needs and is, over time, much more affordable than buying something inferior.” Changing Seasons offers five piece sets – four chairs and a table – that are made in the U.S. starting around $700. “The furniture we sell usually carries big warranties with a minimum 15 year warranty on the frame but some are 20 years,” Hughes said. “We also offer layaway.” Hughes said he wants customers at Changing Seasons to know they matter. “That we genuinely care about them enjoying the largest room of their house, especially in the aspect of quality and price,” he said. “And I think we can all get a little enjoyment and pride from knowing that we own something that was still made in our country. This is something that the big box stores don’t do but we do.” Hughes also wants to expand the store’s restoration services. “And I am willing to take on a challenge for a customer in this area,” he said. Just another way Changing Seasons wants to give customers all that they need.

American

Chevrolet Cadillac By Ken Wickliffe

We appreciate our customers and are grateful to them. Thank you Muncie, Delaware County and GM.

M

uncie marks 150 years as a city this year, and a local automobile dealership that focuses on serving Muncie-area residents is an enthusiastic partner in this celebration. A mid-sized city like Muncie can be a nicer place to live than a huge metropolitan area, most residents here agree. In the same way, American Chevrolet Cadillac gives people here an opportunity to enjoy the comfort of doing business with their friends and neighbors. Customers find this a refreshing change from a large, impersonal dealership where they’re treated as a number rather than as a person. In fact, serving the people of Muncie has been the number one priority of Steve DeAnda, owner of American Chevrolet Cadillac, since the day he opened the dealership in 2003. “Soon after we opened, a customer asked me if I wanted to become a ‘megadealer,’ since those were becoming popular at that time,” he recalled. “I replied that I didn’t – and that’s still how I feel today. “I have focused, instead, on serving our local market to the best of our abilities and hiring employees I can trust, and who will stay with us. We are now at 62 employees, and of the 47 original people I hired, 35 are still here. I consider that one of our best achievements.” Perhaps most importantly, customers have responded positively to the American way of doing business. In 2003, American Chevrolet Cadillac ranked 11 out of 683 GM dealerships in sales volume and customer satisfaction. In 2004, that rank moved up to first, but that hasn’t stopped the stream of improvements that have continued since then. “We appreciate our customers and are grateful to them. Thank you Muncie, thank you Delaware County, and thank you GM,” the American Chevrolet Cadillac staff says on its website. New Location – Same Values Just as serving the needs of Muncie customers has always been the cornerstone of American Chevrolet Cadillac’s business plan, the dealership’s new location – opened in 2013 – was designed to enhance value and convenience for customers throughout the local area. “Getting in and out of the dealership is now easier for all customers in the new location, and we’re more accessible to people on the south side of Muncie, which is important to us,” DeAnda said. “From the south side of town, it’s easy and fast to get to us by taking Cornbread Road to Nebo.” And, true to DeAnda’s original vision of having a manageably-sized dealership, the new location has about the same blacktopped area as the previous one – but more space for customers to look at cars indoors. “A much-larger showroom allows us to move more cars inside, especially during the winter, so our customers shop in a climate-controlled environment,” he said. “We also have a very large customer waiting area for the service department, and the service area itself is larger, with more space for parts and larger work spaces for employees.” The drive-through service entrance is large and well-lit, making it an inviting place to drop off a vehicle for service or maintenance. DeAnda also expressed appreciation to local offi-

cials for helping with permits and approvals before and during the construction of the new dealership. “I am very grateful to the city and county for the help they provided us in ‘jumping hurdles’ and expediting the process of building our new facility,” he said. Customer Focus, Community Spirit While American Chevrolet Cadillac has always made providing top value to Muncie-area customers its number one priority, DeAnda invites people to experience that for themselves rather than take his word for it. “I believe that we must earn and maintain your trust every day and we must always provide you with more value than our competitors,” he said. “Here are a few reasons that you might take a leap of faith with American.” • American guarantees competitive pricing on everything we sell. If you find a competitor advertising the same product or service at a lower price, just provide the advertisement and American will beat it. • Our vehicle prices are clearly marked on our website and adjusted to meet market conditions, which means that you are always guaranteed to get the lowest price. • We have over 400 vehicles on site for an excellent selection. • We pay above market price for sharp trade-ins. • We carry exclusive accessories to personalize your car truck or sport utility vehicle. • Our sales people are knowledgeable and hard working. They are compensated as a group with their primary goal being customer service. • Our Service Technicians are over 200% trained on the latest automotive technology required by Chevrolet and Cadillac. • We provide Service Loaner Vehicles for Free. • Our dealership has been awarded the GM Mark of Excellence Award 12 years running. • We have a new state-of-the-art facility to serve our customer better. • American is available to do business 24 hours a day 7 days per week at www.driveamerican.com In addition, American Chevrolet Cadillac supports more than 200 local charities and causes, with employees giving their time as well as money to make Muncie a better place for everyone who lives here. Hours and Location Conveniently located at the corner of Nebo Road and State Road 332 (McGalliard Rd.), American Chevrolet Cadillac is easily accessible from all parts of Muncie. The sales department is open MondayFriday from 8 a.m – 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Service and parts department hours are 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays.

L.A. Pittenger

Student Center By Darrel Radford

The student center is for far more than just students.

F

or nearly half of Muncie’s existence, the L.A. Pittenger Student Center has been there. Ready to serve. Ready to comfort. Ready to entertain. Yet since it opened on Ball State University’s campus in 1952, many of the things this facility does may be unknown to those who aren’t BSU alumni. Even former and current students might be amazed at how the facility named in honor of early BSU President L.A. Pittenger has become the literal “center” of so many activities. In 2014, people walked through the Student Center doors 1,361,668 times, a number that is more than 19 times larger than Muncie’s population. Everything under one roof It’s amazing to some that so many varied activities can originate from one location. From the daily hangout routines of Ball State students to staging The Muncie Star-Press “Person of the Year” event, the center hosts, serves, and stages many different kinds of activities. “It’s all about convenience,” said Bruce Morgan, BSU’s Director of Student Center and Programs. “Everything is under one roof, from the beautifully renovated areas like the Ballroom and Cardinal Hall to catering and hotel rooms. We emphasize excellent customer service and strive to make every event a ‘one-of-a-kind’ experience.” Banquets, meetings, receptions dances and even weddings originate here. Simply put, the student center is for far more than just students. Anyone who needs a meeting room, catering or facility for a special event is encouraged to call and make reservations. The ballroom and Cardinal Hall can accommodate large events. Whether it’s a black tie affair or a casual gathering, the student center has a facility to meet all needs. There are 21 meeting rooms in all that can easily host groups of ten or fewer or up to several hundred, depending on the type of use. Catering 2,400 events annually Some of those people may have attended one of 6,467 events held at the Student Center last year. “Hosting events has become big business for the student center,” stated veteran General Manager of Catering Bill Kimes. Kimes said his staff of 14 full-time employees and approximately 40 part-time students will do events ranging from the relatively simple coffee service to feeding the Muncie Symphony, catering a wedding or taking care of visiting celebrities on campus like David Letterman, Oprah Winfrey or Bill Cosby. “We basically do anything that involves food,” Kimes said, “handing out ice cream, preparing a breakfast for two or serving 1,500. We provide anything that you might want.” Kimes and his staff host various departmental and community events. Ball State athletes depend on pregame meal service from Kimes and his staff. Football fans in the suites at Ball

State’s Scheumann Stadium are also among those served by University Catering. Hotel rooms available Others, such as guest speakers, visiting faculty or parents of students may have had a good night’s rest on their minds when visiting the Student Center. Students who pass through the facility every day may not realize it, but the center is a great place to stay for those visiting the campus. The center offers 25 hotel rooms that enable guest speakers, parents of students and others a comfortable night’s sleep on campus instead of booking an outside facility. Bowling Center In 2014, the Student Center’s bowling facility was remodeled with new synthetic lanes, a first for Delaware County. A concession was also added. Center of Training As the student center operates, students learn. Those who are eyeing a career in a hospitality-related field gain real-life experience as they help in preparing for and hosting the myriad of Student Center events. “We try really hard to teach students in our hospitality and food management program life skills, not necessarily how to serve from the left and clear from the right, but how to deal with people,” Kimes said. “We are very fortunate in that we deal with a large variety of people.” Blending the past with the present Fast-forward more than 60 years after the student center’s opening, and officials who approved building the facility would be amazed. The center was expanded in 1962 and renovated in 2010, improving the ambiance of the building. The center is both a place of history and current events. A “roll of honor” decorates one of the walls, paying tribute to faculty, staff and students who were at Ball State in the 1940s but left to serve in World War II. An alumni lounge continues bringing people together again who once called this campus home. But every weekend, the good times roll during the studentled Saturday Late Nite program. The center’s flexibility and portable staging areas make for easy transitions from banquet to meeting to dance and even weddings. The famous “Tally” – a place where generations of Ball State students have flocked for fast food, great conversation and relaxation – is still going strong, but has changed with the times. Gone are the pinball machines of the 1970s and in their place are a variety of mounted televisions and modern décor. A fullservice Starbucks was added in 2010. If L.A. Pittenger could join the million people who annually walk into the place that bears his name today, he’d no doubt be surprised at all that has happened here. And proud, as well.

Family Hearing Care By Chris Bavender

“Good hearing can have a long term health benefit.” “We live longer and healthier lives with better hearing.”

S

taying abreast of changes in the audiology field is one way Dr. Suzanne Shockley makes sure she is offering the best service possible to her patients. “It is critical to stay up to date with the massive changes being made in the technology today in order to provide the best choice for my patients,” she said. “The state requires a minimum of thirtysix hours every two years to maintain a license to practice. I usually obtain thirty-six to fifty hours every year. I am Board Certified by AAA.” She stays updated by attending two national conventions every year. One in the spring and one in the fall. She will be at the American Academy of Audiologists convention in San Antonio, TX this spring. “To gain information about the latest testing techniques and hearing aid technology,” Shockley said. Shockley has provided services to the Muncie community for more than 32 years. She opened her own practice - Family Hearing Care - in 2000 at 6770 W. Kilgore Ave. Before that, she worked at the hospital for 16 years. The first step to a visit is a hearing evaluation to determine if you have any hearing loss, what level of hearing loss, and what your need might be for hearing aids. “Initial testing can take an average of 30 minutes to complete if there is a routine hearing problem,” Shockley said. “Once the initial paper work has been completed the patient will be checked for wax build up and any other outer ear problems.” Testing for hearing loss includes a middle ear test, traditional tone testing and other testing as needed. People of any age can be screened. Helping her patients get a handle on hearing loss is what has kept Shockley hard at work over the years. “It’s a job to go someplace and strain to listen to conversations, especially if it’s noisy,” Shockley said. “They’re afraid they will answer wrong or not get anything out of it so they don’t want to participate.” Many of Shockley’s patients come in more for their families, she said. But once they get their hearing aids and realize how much eaiser it makes things, they’re happy. “One of the important things that should be addressed with our older hearing patients is that good hearing can have a long term health benefit,” Shockley said. “We live longer and healthier lives with better hearing.” Better hearing that can be achieved through a wide range of hearing aids - from ones that fit behind the ear, or are even samll enough to fit in the ear canal. Shockley said about 75 percent of her patients opt for the former. “Hearing aid technology has changed greatly,” she said. “The average person is probably not buying all the sophisticated gadgets available because most want to put their aids on and not make adjustments.” Shockley makes sure patients return every week initally to make any of those needed adjustments. If a patient finds their hearing aid isn’t working correctly, or are uncomfortable, they can bring them back right away for any necessary adjustments. “Programming, adjustments, and cleaning are essential to having your hearing aids work successfully,” Shockley said. Over the years, Shockley has found that her patients are younger on average. In the past, she said, people waited an average of seven years from when they thought they might need hearing aids to when they actually got them. “But now I see people who are motivated,” she said. “They’ve already made the decision they need assistance and are looking to see what it takes to do that.” An area that continues to pique Shockley’s interest is looping. A hearing loop magnetically transfers the sound signal such as a TV or microphone to hearing aids and cochlear implants outfitted with a tiny telecoil (t-coil) receiver. About 90 percent of hearing aids she fits has the t-coil in them. To take advantage of the system all that is required is to reprogram the hearing aid to take it out of automatic mode. “If you have a hearing aid you can just connect to the speaker or PA system or whatever is being broadcast over the loop directly into the hearing aid and it eliminates outside noise,” she said. “There are also loop systems you can put in your home, say in your TV room, into the sound system and then feed in the hearing aid. It really is a neat way of connecting people to their environment and making it easier for them to hear in those large rooms where acoustics are really bad.” Family Hearing Care has hearing aids for everyone’s budgets. While they average around $1,600 apiece, some are available with less technology at a lower cost and still provide improved hearing. Referrals to Family Hearing Care aren’t needed - anyone can come in for a hearing screening or a consultation. “We hope that our patient will be pleased with the services from our office. We want them to know that we care about them and we want them to be successful hearing aid patients,” Shockley said. “We hope that they find that hearing aids are not something that they do not like or use. We hope that they will love their new hearing aids. We hope that they will enjoy all the activities that they have stopped enjoying because they could not hear.”

Bill McCoy

Ford Lincoln By Ken Wickliffe

“My dad founded the dealership in 1979, and many on our staff have been with us 20 years or more, which makes for tremendous customer loyalty,”

J

ust as 2015 is a landmark year for Muncie, this is a significant year for Ford Motor Company and its local dealership, Bill McCoy Ford Lincoln. Muncie turns 150 years old this year, and for nearly four decades of that history Bill McCoy Ford Lincoln has been serving local customers with a sense of civic pride and customer service that comes from continuous family ownership since the day the dealership was founded. “We live in the community so our customers are our friends and neighbors,” said Mark Booher, general sales manager. “We stop and talk with our customers when we shop at the grocery store, go out to dinner or attend community functions. That’s why building relationships – not just selling a single vehicle - is what drives our business.” And, just as Ford Motor Company’s quality arises in large part from a commitment that originated with Henry Ford himself, Bill McCoy Ford Lincoln has built a culture of fairness that goes back to Bill McCoy, the dealership’s founder. “Some dealerships have a ‘system’ in which customers are rushed through the buying process and subjected to highpressure sales tactics,” said Mike McCoy, Bill’s son, who now owns the dealership. “We don’t do that, and we never will. We sit down and work out every deal with no pressure so our customer is comfortable every step of the way.” Exceptional satisfaction ratings and customer loyalty prove the success of this approach. In addition, people who return to the dealership know they’ll see familiar faces. “My dad founded the dealership in 1979, and many on our staff have been with us 20 years or more, which makes for tremendous customer loyalty,” McCoy said. “We know our customers, and they know us. All of us here take pride in being upfront, honest and straightforward with all of our customers, whether someone has bought several vehicles here or is buying his or her first one.”

Lincoln MKC Also new this year, Lincoln Motor Company has introduced the MKC, a premium compact crossover that comes standard with the luxury, refinement and class only Lincoln can deliver. Offering the choice of two EcoBoost engines, the MKC is rated at up to 29 mpg and starts at under $34,000, making it both highly efficient and the most affordable vehicle in its segment.

All-New F-150 Leading off Ford’s list of innovations for 2015 is the all-new F-150, a groundbreaking truck that was chosen as 2015 North American Truck of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Ford’s reinvented F-150 has arrived at Bill McCoy Ford Lincoln, and it’s ready to continue Ford’s tradition of 38 continuous years as producer of the top selling truck line in America. “It’s been a long time since anything completely new has come along, and this is it. Ford has used every technology at its disposal to lighten and strengthen the 2015 F-150, so our customers get a truck that’s twice as strong and rigid, yet it is also 700 pounds lighter,” Booher said. Ford’s EcoBoost engine technology, proven in the F-150 since 2011, now enters a new phase with the addition of the 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine, which delivers 325 horsepower, an 8,500-pound tow rating and fuel economy of up to 26 mpg. With the larger 3.5liter EcoBoost V6, the F-150 has 365 horsepower and a tow rating of up to 12,200 pounds. “Since we have started receiving the 2015 F-150 into our inventory, the interest has been phenomenal,” said Mike Ramsey, commercial and fleet manager at McCoy. “We sold one the day it arrived, and more trucks are arriving now so we will have an excellent selection on hand.”

Factory-Trained Service As vehicles have grown more complex, the need for skilled, professional service by the trained technicians at Bill McCoy Ford Lincoln has never been greater. “Today on Ford and Lincoln vehicles we have technologies such as the SYNC system, as well as increasingly-complex electronic engine management, electric power steering and many other systems that challenge technicians,” Mike McCoy explained. “Having your vehicle serviced by someone who knows it inside and out is the best way to protect your investment and keep your vehicle in top condition.”

2015 Ford Edge Arriving at Bill McCoy Ford Lincoln within days will be the all-new 2015 Ford Edge, the first vehicle in Ford’s lineup to come standard with EcoBoost power. Built on the same platform as the award-winning Ford Fusion, the 2015 Edge is powered by a standard two-liter EcoBoost engine that delivers 245 horsepower as well as a highway fuel economy rating of up to 30 mpg. At the same time, an all-new chassis ensures a quieter ride, better handling and a more refined overall feel.

2015 Mustang

In Person or Online

Ford’s legendary pony car, which gave birth to an entire class of vehicles, marks its 50th anniversary this year, and Ford is celebrating with a fully-redesigned model that showcases the car’s tradition while including all of the innovation for which the automaker has become known. Among the Mustang’s exterior changes are a wider stance for better handling and a more muscular look, said Matt Haver, sales consultant at the dealership. In addition, there are upgraded wheel and tire combinations and an interior that features new dash and control layouts as well as SYNC, MyFord Touch and other technologies that make the 2015 Mustang a modern version of a classic.

Located at 2001 E. McGalliard Rd., Muncie, Bill McCoy Ford Lincoln’s sales department is open 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 9 to 6 on Wednesday and Friday; and 9 to 5 on Saturday. The service and parts departments are open 7 to 5 weekdays and 8 to 1 on Saturday. The phone number is (765) 2890431. The dealership’s website, www.mccoyford.com, allows shoppers to find special offers, browse the inventory of new and used vehicles, search for a specific vehicle, apply for financing or schedule a service or body shop visit.

First Merchants By Chris Bavender

First Merchants is the largest financial services holding company headquartered in Central Indiana.

F

irst Merchant’s mission is simple – deliver superior personalized financial solutions to consumer and closely held commercial clients. They do that by providing sound advice and products that exceed customer expectations. “We provide an experience where customers can bank with their friends and neighbors, realizing that our business begins and ends with people – with relationships,” said Scott McKee, VP/ Manager, Commercial Banking, at First Merchants. “Everything we do is centered on the customer experience.” Customers like Midland Atlantic Properties. “The most important part of our relationship with First Merchants was during the construction process of our project. We had an extremely tight schedule and encountered extraordinary amounts of rain during the first several months of construction. In order for us to deliver the retail spaces to Dick’s, Michael’s, and Five Below we had to provide very quick payment to our contractor and subcontractors as an incentive to work

overtime,” said Aaron Boyle, Midland’s Managing Partner. “First Merchants is probably the best bank we have worked with in terms of being flexible and making adjustments in order for us to deal with unexpected issues like weather and timing. Without the efforts of Kevin Eckerty and First Merchants it is very likely that we would not have been able to deliver our project on time to the Dick’s.” As the largest financial services holding company headquartered in Central Indiana, First Merchants offers:

that,” McKee said. “A strength of First Merchants and a benefit our customers enjoy is our ability to address all of their financial needs. We can help businesses with financing to purchase

equipment, expand or build new facilities, as well as providing them with retirement plans for their employees. While we re at it, we can fulfill a need for a mortgage loan and insure your home.” It was because of those varied services and vast enterprise that Stephen DeAnda, of American Chevrolet Cadillac, turned to First Merchants. “I had a very complex project in that it included the possibility

• Retail Banking • Mortgage Banking • Business Banking • Commercial Banking • Cash Management Services • Trust and Investment Services • Insurance Services First Merchants believes strongly in relationships. “Everyone has varied needs for financial services. These needs are always unique and dependent upon individual circumstances,” McKee said. “We believe in and want to help support businesses, individuals, and families meet their financial goals. It’s through a deep relationship that we are able to accomplish that.” Relationships such as the one with Muncie Music Center. “Having the benefit of a local bank for our ‘one-stop shopping’ has been incredibly smooth. All of my contacts are within the

headquarters – three blocks from Muncie Music Center,” said owner, Dave Helms. “First Merchants Bank is small enough to be ‘local’ with a personal touch – all the way to my commercial banker, Kevin, who answers his cell phone anytime I have a need. Yet FMB is large enough to have the lending power to assist Muncie Music Center. The customer service is professional, exceptional, and reliable. Period.” And that speaks to First Merchants tagline, McKee said. – “The Strength of Big. The Service of Small.” “As a large financial services company, we have the financial strength to provide the products and services that our customers want, while we are empowered to make decisions locally. We feel we have the best of both worlds, and it resonates with our customers,” he said. “Our customers know us because we live in the same neighborhoods, worship together, have children in the same schools, share our lives/experiences together. We are fully invested in our communities.” Dale Lindley and Mary Jo Crutcher – President and Vice President, respectively, of Westminster Village Muncie agree. “It was a pleasure to work with Steve Moore and his team at First Merchants Bank during our loan process to renovate and expand Westminster Village,” Lindley and Crutcher said. “Since Westminster is a community organization, we were very thankful they could meet our financing needs locally for this expansion without going elsewhere.” McKee said that’s because First Merchants want to help businesses, individuals, and families meet their financial goals. “It’s through a deep relationship that we are able to accomplish

of an SBA loan and the combination of loans on commercial land, construction and a long term mortgage. To add to the complexity, I had a partner on the commercial land and we were seeking a TIF loan for utility improvements,” DeAnda said. “Out of all the banks that wanted this business, I felt that FMB was the only one that could really get their arms around it and understand the entire project vision. Everyone that I dealt with was incredibly knowledgeable and professional. The pricing was competitive and the service was and still is as close to perfect as service can be.” With the right team of lending experts, according to Jeff Daniels of Toyota, to get the job done. “Not only did they bring a significant amount of knowledge and experience to the table, but they proved to be nimble and accommodating of many moving parts throughout the entire deal. Every inflection point in the transaction was handled, swiftly, competently and with the feeling that you had a very large team behind the few individuals we were interfacing with,” Daniels said. “First Merchants not only assumed the role of lender, but felt in many ways like our “partner” all throughout the process.

Lastly, the fact First Merchants management and associates are so visible in and around the community supporting endless causes and charities, only validates our choice to keep our business with an organization that will give back along the way.” McKee said the bank has “deep, committed relationships to organizations and initiatives through our desire to support a healthy, happy, growing community.” “First Merchants invests and believes in organizations like United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and many other organizations that do important work in our community,” he said. “Our employees are enthusiastically volunteer, giving their time and talents to support many worthwhile causes in our community. We are part of the community and feel we have an obligation to invest to support the health and growth.”

The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory By Ken Wickliffe

A

s Muncie celebrates its 150th anniversary as a community, The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory maintains a concurrent tradition of service that goes back 171 years. And, just as Muncie’s strength as a city rests both on its proud history and on the vitality of its current citizens, the longstanding heritage of Meeks Mortuary is one that develops and grows every year as families continue to place their trust in the caring, professional staff at Meeks. In fact, responding to the changing needs and preferences of each generation is one quality that has made Meeks Mortuary the oldest business in Muncie and one of the longest-operating funeral homes in Indiana. “Our entire society is more mobile now and people’s preferences have changed,” said David Cox, president of Meeks Mortuary. “While we are honored to have served as many as nine generations of local families, we also know the importance of being innovative and offering a greater variety of new and meaningful ways for people to celebrate their loved ones.” For example, he said, cremation is now much more popular than in the past, which has led Meeks to offer a greater variety of options for those who make this choice. In addition, Meeks has long been the leader in Delaware County for advanced funeral planning, offering a trained pre-planning staff that never employs highpressure tactics and can provide informational seminars to churches as well as fraternal and social organizations. Of course, Meeks also provides extensive grief support for families, working with caregivers as well as clergy to ensure that emotional and spiritual needs are addressed as part of the grieving process. “Our business is a landmark in Muncie, which provides an added level of comfort and security for many families when they call on us to help when they’ve lost a loved one,” said Patrick O’Connor, director of funeral service operations. At both Meeks Mortuary locations – 415 E. Washington St. and 7901 W. Isanogel Road – families have access to beautifully-appointed, permanent chapels with seating for as many as 175 guests. At both facilities, Meeks offers the finest and most complete selection of funeral, cremation and memorialization products. Meeks is also the only funeral home in the county that is a member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes, an international organization whose members agree to adhere to a strict Code of Good Practice. Memorial Garden Last year, Meeks Mortuary completed construction of a Memorial Garden at the Washington Street location. A beautiful green space in downtown Muncie, the Memorial Garden opened with a ceremony on September 10, 2014 – the occasion of Meeks’ 170th anniversary. Dedicated to all of the individuals and families Meeks Mortuary has served in the past and will serve in the future, the Memorial Garden has special plaques honoring members of each of the United States Armed Forces, as well as the Muncie Police and Fire Departments, Delaware County Sheriff’s Department, Delaware County Emergency Medical Service, Delaware County Coroner, Indiana State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. History While the staff at Meeks Mortuary does not rest on its history, there’s a fascinating story behind this local business that has served the community for 171 years – pre-dating the establishment of Muncie itself by 21 years. Muncie was still “Munseytown” and John Tyler had just succeeded William Henry Harrison as the President of the United States when Amos and Nancy Means Meeks arrived here in 1844 from Virginia in a horse-drawn wagon with their

six children. The family established a farm about three miles northeast of Selma, where Robert Meeks, the oldest son, helped his father clear the land. Robert Meeks then came to Muncie and began working as an apprentice cabinetmaker, eventually purchasing an interest in the business with his brother Isaac, establishing a company known as R. and I. Meeks. Back in those days cabinetmakers were often undertakers, too, as their woodworking skills were employed to build coffins as well as furniture. Thus, the combined funeral and cabinet business began with a woodworking shop on the second floor of a two-story building located where the Muncie Civic Theatre now stands. Recognized for integrity from the beginning, R. and I. Meeks was awarded a silver cup at the county fair in 1857. Robert Meeks’ oldest son, James, became a partner in 1871, causing the firm’s name to be changed to R. & I. Meeks and Company. Martin and Will, two of Robert’s other children, joined the firm in 1880, buying the interest that had been held by their Uncle Isaac. It was in that same year that Meeks’ original building was destroyed by fire. The property was then sold to James Boyce, who erected the two-story “Boyce Block” on the site, while the Meeks family relocated its furniture business and undertaking parlor to 115-117 E. Main St., on the south side of the street between Walnut and Mulberry. Isaac Meeks died in 1891, and James died in 1906. Following the loss of the co-founders, the business continued as R. Meeks and Sons. After James and Will Meeks retired, Martin Meeks was joined in the business by his sons – Arthur, Ernest and Charles. The name was then changed to M.L. Meeks and Sons, and the furniture-making facet of the business was discontinued. However, the firm still sold furniture made by others until selling that part of the business to Banner (later Banner-Whitehill) Furniture Company. When Martin Meeks died in 1928, his sons soon began building the present mortuary at 415 E. Washington St. in his memory. One of the first buildings to be designed and built specifically as a mortuary, this facility opened in 1932 and was featured nationally in a three-page article in American Funeral Director magazine. Following the passing of Charles, Arthur and Ernest Meeks, David Martin Meeks, Arthur’s son, took charge of the business. It was David Martin Meeks who hired the past president of Meeks Mortuary, Gordon Cox, who had been an employee since 1966 before becoming a principal of the corporation. The current president of The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, David Cox, is Gordon’s son.

Gaddis By Ken Wickliffe

Chrysler Dodge Jeep

M

uncie turns 150 years old this year, and Muncie’s oldest new car dealership has been serving local customers from the same location at the corner of Wheeling and Centennial Avenues for almost 40 of those years. And, as Muncie remembers its past and plans for the future, the importance of longstanding, family-built businesses deeply grounded in the community is greater now than ever. Unlike some of its competitors, Gaddis Chrysler Dodge Jeep has remained in the city itself, where it pays taxes to help support Muncie police, firefighters, schools and other city services. In addition, the dealership’s familiar in-town location is convenient and accessible to customers, many of whom have purchased several vehicles at the dealership. “We have been in business on the same corner, under the same ownership, for 38 years, which means we have sold and serviced cars for several generations of many area families,” said Steve Gaddis, general manager of the dealership. “Many

of our employees have been here 20 years or more. This means our customers see the same people every time they come in, which provides a sense of comfort and consistency.” While Steve is now in charge of the dealership’s daily operations, his dad, Bill Gaddis, is often present, as well. As the founder of the dealership, Bill is a friend to many people who have bought cars from him for nearly four decades. Two years ago, Gaddis Chrysler Dodge Jeep remodeled to offer customers more cars on display in the showroom, greater convenience in the service department and a new look inside and out. Making nearly-exclusive use of local labor and suppliers to complete this job was a priority, as the Gaddis family and their employees have a commitment to Muncie and its residents. The last few years have brought exceptional growth and innovation across all four vehicle lines at Gaddis Chrysler Dodge Jeep. A few examples: RAM 1500 Last year the Ram 1500 became the first truck ever to be named Motor Trend Truck of the Year two years in a row, and this year the 2015 Ram has taken the top spot in Motor Trend magazine’s threetruck comparison pitting the Ram 1500 against Ford’s F-150 and Chevy’s Silverado. The Ram came out on top in a series of tests measuring such qualities as acceleration, braking, maximum lateral grip, fuel economy, towing with a 7,000-pound trailer

and hauling 1,000 pounds of payload. Chrysler 200/300 Redesigned last year as an all-new 2015 model, Chrysler’s 200 was recently named a Consumers Digest Best Buy in the Midsize segment, making it one of five vehicles offered at Gaddis Chrysler Dodge Jeep to earn this honor. The other Consumers Digest Best Buy models are the Chrysler Town and Country and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans, the Ram 1500 pickup and the Dodge Durango full-size SUV. In addition, the redesigned Chrysler 300 highlights six decades of American automotive ingenuity with a full-size model that literally takes too many “best-in-class” honors to list, including best-in-class V6 highway fuel economy and driving range, best V8 power in its class, largest interior volume in its class, the segment’s largest touch-screen display and the larg-

est rear seat passenger volume of any fullsize car. Dodge Charger/ Challenger The world’s only four-door muscle car, the Dodge Charger has also been updated for 2015, with Chrysler Group’s TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission now standard on every model. Fuel-efficient and powerful engine options include the awardwinning 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar, which delivers up to 31 mpg, all the way up to a new 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI Hellcat V8 that produces an unheard of 707 horsepower, 650 lb.-ft. of torque, and top speed of 204 miles per hour. Also for 2015, Dodge has redesigned its pony car, the Challenger. Small Engine

Warehouse, Inc. By Lorri Markum

S

mall Engine Warehouse, Inc. continues to be a successful local, family owned and operated business, currently owned by Tim Padgett, along with his brother, Roy Padgett, Jr. With humble beginnings launched in a garage in Dunkirk, Indiana in the 1970s, Small Engine Warehouse has become one of the larger corporations in the small engine business world. Business expansion is nothing new to the Padgetts, most recently the brothers purchased property on Muncie’s south side, once known as the K-Mart south building. Immediate renovations to the location transformed the building into the Shipping and Receiving Facility for Small Engine Warehouse operations. This was a result of moving the entire operation previously located in Dunkirk, Indiana. “It allows our shipping facility, repower build shops, inventory, and parts to all be located under one roof—something we didn’t have in Dunkirk,” said Roy Jr., “It also allows more efficient shipping and receiving opportunities, and daily operations between our retail location and the warehouse.” The South Walnut location is not a public access facility. It strictly serves as the shipping and receiving facility, as well as housing thousands of small engines, parts, and build shops for the corporation. The Small Engine Warehouse retail store is located at 4005 N. Wheeling in Muncie, the largest showroom of its kind for residential and commercial lawn equipment in the area. Small Engine Warehouse is an authorized dealer for Briggs & Stratton, Cub Cadet, Echo, Honda, Hustler, Kawasaki, Kohler, Scag, Tecumseh, and Troy-Bilt. The retail location also houses its own full-service, Parts & Service department, with Briggs & Stratton Certified Master Service Technicians on staff. Another component of Small Engine Warehouse at the retail location is the Rental department, providing both commercial and residential customers with hundreds of rental equipment options. For the average homeowner there are items from yard rollers, to paint sprayers. For the commercial customer, bobcat, and lift rentals, to masonry saws, and hundreds of other items. Small Engine Warehouse employs over sixty individuals. Corporate headquarters is located at 501 W. Riggin Road, Muncie. In addition to the warehouse, retail store, and corporate offices, Small Engine Warehouse operates a call center serving their online sales customers. The call center serves clients nationwide and globally. Small Engine Warehouse retail location is open Monday through Saturday. Find them at smallenginewarehouse.com or on their Facebook page at Small Engine Warehouse.

Progress Rail

Progress Rail Manufacturing in Muncie Continues to Grow Globally, Locally

P

rogress Rail’s locomotive manufacturing facility in Muncie, Ind., is making a growing impact on the global locomotive industry as well as its local community. When Progress Rail began producing locomotives in Muncie in 2011, manufacturing operations were restored to a facility that had been empty for nearly 20 years, and the facility was staffed with willing and capable employees from the local area. Hiring to meet customer demand has positively affected an overall drop in the unemployment rate of Delaware County. Since beginning operations, the Muncie facility has seen a large diversity of domestic and international locomotive orders, with completed units for operation in eight counties across five continents. The Muncie facility has begun assembling passenger rail locomotives for Metro Link in Los Angeles, Calif. This is an exciting new market and a reintroduction of the Electro-Motive Diesel, a Progress Rail subsidiary, unit back into the high speed passenger rail market after an absence of more than 15 years. While the employees of Progress Rail in Muncie work daily to produce locomotives for a global market, they also recognize the importance of giving back to their local community. Employees regularly donate to the local food pantries and the Muncie Mission “Walk a Mile in My Shoesâ€? fundraiser, in addition to contributing to updates for the local Boys & Girls Club and providing assistance to individual families during the holiday season.

We’re Proud To Be Here.

At Progress Rail Manufacturing Corporation, we work hard to ensure we deliver quality products and reliable services to our customers. At the same time, we believe that none of that commitment would be possible without the support of our local communities in which we live and work. Progress Rail is proud to be part of the Muncie community, where we believe we have assembled one of the best teams, with a passion for creating one of the most durable and sustainable products on the market today – EMD locomotives. The future is bright. And with our Muncie team’s commitment to the greater Muncie and Delaware County area, we look forward to sharing it with you. Contact us today to see where Progress can take you, and become a part of the Next Generation of Progress.

Minnetrista Premium Summer Camps Coming to Minnetrista

T

his June, Minnetrista will offer two new, premium camps for young enthusiasts in grades 5 to 8. “These camps have depth,” said Director of Experience & Education George Buss. “Campers will have the chance to dive into a passion and experience in action the skills and knowledge needed by experts who pursue these topics as an avid hobby or even a career.” Summer Camp Minnetrista will be changing in two specific ways. While Camp Minnetrista for Spring Break and Fall Break will continue to serve younger aged children, Summer Camp Minnetrista will be catered to campers in grades 5 to 8, as of fall 2015. In addition, camps have always related to a broad topic, with general fun and education as the driving force. What these new special camps provide are focuses on the specific areas of glass art, and cooking and canning. These camps are a great addition as glass and canning have been important themes in Minnetrista history and events. In Summer Camp Minnetrista: Glass Artists, campers will learn the skills of glass art such as cutting, grinding, soldering, flame work, and fusing. Educator Karen Nickel said the camps will be similar to what the adults do in glass workshops at Minnetrista, but campers can get more immersed. “The adults have a 3-hour workshop and that’s it, you’re done,” said Nickel. “In addition to multiple projects, the Glass Artists can continuously work on a big project throughout the camp week and say at the end of the week, ‘I created this.’” Multiple projects include stained glass, fused glass, and mosaics. The kids will be able make these various pieces using multiple techniques and tools. Campers will have a special opportunity to visit the Marilyn K. Glick Center for Glass at Ball State University. They will be able to view glass demonstrations, receive a tour of the studio, and even work on a project while visiting the center. The Glass Artists will also have a chance to display their art made during the week. On the last afternoon of the week, campers’ parents and Minnetrista staff will be able to view all their artwork. The Glass Artists camp runs June 15 to 19. In Summer Camp Minnetrista: Young Cooks, campers will be cooking, as well as canning, and learning how the two activities can be used together. “You cook and can certain foods, but then what can you do with them?” said Education Manager Ashley Mann. “Campers will learn how to take foods they’ve canned and incorporate them into innovative meals.” Not only will they cook a variety of foods, campers will also learn cooking skills, such as proper knife handling, food pairings, and kitchen sanitation. Another fun aspect of this camp will be a “tool of the day” portion. “Each day we will introduce a tool and learn its function,” said Mann. “Then that tool will be incorporated into the day’s cooking.” Campers will be able to cook their own lunches, as well as have the exciting opportunity to visit a professional kitchen to see chefs at work. Campers will also have an exciting and engaging opportunity to show off their newfound kitchen skills on the last day of Young Cooks. The campers will be divided into two groups. Then, they will prepare a meal that will be judged by Minnetrista’s staff. The Young Cooks camp runs June 22 to 26. Fall Break Camp Minnetrista will continue to provide general fun and education to children in grades 1 to 4, while Spring Break Camp Minnetrista will serve grades Pre-K to 3. For more information on camps, visit minnetrista.net/camp-minnetrista or call 765.282.4848.

People know we are going to be here and take care of their needs, so they come back.

H

elping Muncie celebrate its 150th anniversary this year is an automobile dealership that’s as locally-grown and rooted in Delaware County as the corn that grows every summer in the fields all around it. And, by outselling other dealerships and attracting customers from a wide area year after year, what started out as a small country Chevy dealer has become a Muncie-area success story. The core values of honesty, kindness and respect have made it happen, according to Sam Pierce, a Yorktown graduate and Vietnam combat veteran as well as a lifelong Delaware County resident and the owner and founder of the dealership. “We value our customers and we believe in our products,” he said. “While most franchised car dealers are business people first, I’ve worked on cars and been around them all my life, so I consider myself a car person first.” A Chevy lover since he was a kid, Sam took a job at the Chevrolet Muncie Transmission Plant after high school, and while working there built up a parttime business selling and repairing cars from his shop at home. Eventually he opened a used car lot on the south side of Muncie before founding his Chevy dealership, which was originally Red Allen Chevrolet in Middletown. Sam Pierce Chevrolet moved to its current location, with a new state-of-the-art service center and body shop, on State Road 67 just east of Daleville, in 2003. “Over the years, many dealers have come and gone, but we’ve been consistent, selling new and used vehicles and serving people in Central Indiana for the past 32 years,” Sam said. “People know we are going to be here and take care of their needs, so they come back.”

customer or a person who has been buying vehicles at Sam Pierce Chevrolet for more than 30 years, as many have. Excellent Selection With the largest inventory of any dealership in the area, Sam Pierce Chevrolet also offers people the selection they want, with many colors, styles and prices for every model. For example, Chevy’s award-winning Silverado is popular with customers, as many people choose Sam Pierce Chevrolet to buy trucks for work, farming and personal use. Meeting the diverse needs of truck buyers has always been a strong point of the dealership. “We know that some people want a truck that’s loaded with every imaginable option and feature, but not everyone does,” Leisure said. “That’s why we stock a wide selection of basic work trucks and moderately-equipped trucks that still have the features many people want, but don’t cost as much.” Likewise, Chevrolet’s Equinox – the top-selling vehicle at Sam Pierce Chevrolet – is always available in just about every color and style Chevy makes. “Our customers love the Equinox because it’s an incredibly versatile vehicle that offers the room, comfort and value they want,” Leisure said. “The adjustable MultiFlex rear seat makes the Equinox as spacious for back-seat passengers as a larger vehicle, and it folds down to open up a large cargo area.” Moreover, he said, the Equinox is rated at up to 32 mpg on the highway – a level of fuel-efficiency nearly unheard of for an SUV.

Reynolds By Chris Bavender

Farm Equipment

The future for Reynolds Farm Equipment seems as bright and shiny as John Deere green.

C

omplete solutions for all your home, business and farm equipment needs – that’s the mission of Reynolds Farm Equipment. The company was founded in December 1955 in Fishers by A.W. “Mac” and Arline Reynolds. It is still owned by the Reynolds family, including Gary Reynolds, who serves as President. Many of the Reynolds family members are still involved with the day-to-day running of the business. “The business is family owned and family oriented. It vigorously tries not to lose sight of the personal experience customers have lost dealing with other large companies,” said Brent Thomas, Lawn and Garden Sales Manager. “The Reynolds family prides itself on family values and that shows in the way we deal with our customers. We consider our employees as an extended part of the family, and they too in turn, mirror those same values.” Reynolds Farm Equipment offers John Deere, Stihl and Honda equipment sales, service, and parts. “Whether you are a farmer, a contractor, a lawn and garden business, or a homeowner we have all the equipment covered,” Thomas said. The company has a commitment to grow and sustain strong customer and community based relationships. “Integrity, honesty, quality, and a commitment to excellent sales and service are a part of our values,” Thomas said. “It’s truly knowing and having a one-on-one

relationship with our customers and continuing to help them grow with our services, that’s just another part of what we do.” Just like the “unbeatable service” Reynolds offers. “We challenge our service technicians to be the best that one can be in their work and performance, and we measure those successes. A large part of our success within the service sector is the continual response that we receive from our customers,” Thomas said. “There are strict training guidelines as well as continuing education for the ever-changing technology. The company is backed by John Deere. We have a close relationship with the John Deere Corporation and Reynolds is one of the strongest John Deere dealerships in the Midwest.” Reynolds has seven locations – five in Indiana (Muncie, Fishers, Atlanta, Lebanon and Mooresville); one in Ohio (Xenia); and one in Kentucky (Nicholasville). Close to 230 employees make sure it all runs smoothly and customers walk away satisfied. “Mac Reynolds, our founder, always said. ‘Buy the best and keep it that way,’” Thomas said. “This just means that we supply a high-quality product along with all the tools and parts to keep operating for years to come.” Reynolds prides itself in the quality of maintenance and repair services offered to customers as well as the multitude of parts carried in-stock for everything from a John Deere combine down to a riding lawn tractor. “We strive to not only offer the latest technology, but to keep downtime of customer’s equipment at a minimum through our parts and service departments. Our sales representatives have the expertise needed to recommend the best possible equipment for the individual landscapes of our customers,” Thomas said. “Being a family owned and operated business, we pride ourselves in the relationships we develop with our customers that wouldn’t always be possible at a big box store.” And that is the benchmark for Reynolds – retaining customers. “Satisfied customers will return and do business with us again and again,” Thomas said. “For 60 years we have strived to achieve complete customer satisfaction through the lasting relationships we build on a day to day basis with our customers. We always stand behind the products we sell, which gives our customers a sense of trust when doing

business with us.” And – as noted on the company website – “So that for generations to come – no matter what our customers need – they can turn to someone they know, right in their back yard.” It is that notion of always being there to help that Reynolds wants to foster in customers. “A company committed to customer service and the community surrounding it,” Thomas said. “When people think of Reynolds, we want them to think of a place they can trust and will be treated fair. Unlike big box stores, we don’t forget about the customer after the sale. We are always available to provide solutions for our customers, even after the sale is complete.” And it doesn’t just end there. “We hold a Kids Day one Saturday in December where children can visit Santa, play games, make crafts and enjoy refreshments. This is a free event we put on for the Muncie and surrounding communities,” Thomas said. “We have also held Ladies Night events in the past where we invite women into the store to become more familiar with the features and controls of riding lawn equipment as well as learn about proper maintenance to help extend equipment life.” The future for Reynolds seems as bright and shiny as John Deere green. “We’ve been around for 60 years and we’re still going strong, thanks to the innovative technologies of John Deere and the way they keep up with advanced research and development,” Thomas said. “We are consistently providing customers with solutions in today’s ever changing market. We just built and opened our new headquarters in Atlanta, Indiana last year, and this year, we’re currently on track to build and open a new facility in Lebanon, Indiana.”

Smith’s A-1

Lawn Service By Alyson Madsen

T

im Smith and his father Larry, originally from Hartford City, have a long and successful history in the lawn care business. Dave Alley has been onboard since 1971. Established in 1952 by patriarch Charles Smith, the business originally dealt in sales and service of home appliances. In 1961 the opportunity to sell and service Wheel Horse tractors (manufactured in South Bend) evolved into the business you see today. It’s apparent that this family venture was built from the ground up on pride. “When my dad worked at People’s Ice after World War II, his boss asked him if could assemble the motors to freezers. He hiked down to the library and read everything he could about the subject,” said Larry, who still admires how his father taught himself about refrigeration and thermodynamics and opened a business a few years’ later. Smith’s A-1 goal today is “to provide quality service and equipment that is a more superior product than can be found at your local big box stores.” Selling Toro, Bobcat, and Country Clipper, Smith’s has now also expanded into Oregon Battery-powered hand-held equipment such as hedge trimmers and chain saws. “Our main focus is quality, not quantity,” said Tim, who makes certain to guide customers into the product that best suits their

needs at a reasonable price.” Smith’s A-1 appreciates their loyal customer base: “We have many regulars, such as estate owners with lots of acreage,” said Larry. “We definitely make our customers our primary focus,” he added. In their third generation of family ownership, the Smiths have gained vast knowledge of the lawn industry, making certain that every customer benefits from their expertise. Services include the sale of fully assembled, serviced, and tested products; on-site servicing; factory-authorized warranty and repair work with pickup and delivery available; and an assurance that none of Smith’s equipment has sat outside before it is purchased. “We don’t sell candy, clothes, tools, toys, or chemicals,” reads a brochure. “We are serious about lawn equipment.” Muncie has been an ideal place for Smith’s A-1. Located on Highway 3 next to Highway-3 Hardware, Smith’s A-1 has served Delaware County and surrounding areas for 63 years and counting. “We take great pride in our business,” said Tim, who noted how most businesses suffered when manufacturing left Muncie. “But without Muncie’s support, it wouldn’t happen.” The Smiths are looking forward to another successful 50 years.

Westminster Village

n March 1st of 2014, Westminster Village celebrated 40 years of serving residents of Delaware County and East Central Indiana as a not-for-profit Continuing Care Retirement Community. At that time, plans were well under way for a comprehensive growth and expansion project with the goal of providing an environment where residents can experience a rewarding and dynamic lifestyle for the later decades of their lives. Ground was broken in October last year and the estimated 18 month construction and renovation venture is currently under way. MKM Architecture and Design, one of the nation’s top healthcare architectural firms, has returned to Westminster to continue with this next step into the future. Enhancing the existing Health Center will be a Medicare Certified Rehab-to-Home neighborhood with over 22,000 sq. ft. of new construction including 20 private rooms, a therapy gym, dining room and lounges. An outdoor therapy garden will assist residents and clients with their rehabilitation. A newly designed Assisted Living neighborhood will include centrally located dining options and activity areas overlooking Westminster Pond. An outdoor courtyard and gardens will provide a picturesque setting for enjoying nature. An event hall will grace the front of the Village. It has been designed to accommodate 312 seats theatre style or 174 with table seating. There will also be a new fitness gym, gallery, massage spa, larger beauty and barber shop and areas for enhanced activities. Dining is perhaps the biggest service change we will see. The redesign in this area will provide residents with more choices. The main dining room will be transformed into two venues. One will feature a traditional atmosphere while the other will have a more contemporary appeal. The Rehab-to-Home and Assisted Living neighborhoods will have their own dining rooms. Of course, the same selective menus that Westminster is well-known for will be retained. For even more variety, a cafe will be added to the library featuring soups sandwiches, salad and more for a quick meal or relaxing with a good book. Residential wellness is another of the areas expected to experience significant growth. With the completion of construction in the spring of 2016, will come the ability for Westminster to expand programs for continuing adventure and learning. Opportunities to address all aspects of wellness; emotional, intellectual physical and spiritual will allow residents the choice to live the life they choose. Completing the new construction will be the replacement and modernization of flooring, ceilings, lighting, furniture wall coverings and artwork. And the entire Village will remain Under One Roof! Outside the building the grounds are also being updated. 5,700 feet of 6’ sidewalks will be installed around the building, drives and parking areas are being redesigned and landscaping with winding paths and destination areas will be located throughout 30 scenic, landscaped acres. The steps that brought Westminster to its opening on March 1st, 1974, were long, complicated and accomplished by volunteers too numerous to name here. Built on land donated by Robert and Esther Cooper, financed by local banks and managed by the Presbyterian Housing Program, the Village was operated as a not-for-profit, nondenominational Retirement Community with the mission to provide affordable retirement living with access to health care for people of average means. There have been many changes over the years. The relationship with the Presbyterian Housing Program and its 6 other retirement communities was discontinued in 1980 and Westminster became the not-for-profit, stand-alone community as it operates today. This will be the third major addition to the original building. But as the growth continues, the original vision of providing excellent continuing care empowering residents to experience an exceptional quality of life at affordable prices remains the same.

The leadership team of Westminster Village looks forward to fulfilling the promise of providing a Continuing Care Retirement Community where residents can experience a rewarding and dynamic lifestyle for the later decades of their lives. To paraphrase the words of President John F. Kennedy, “the energy, the faith and the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our community and all who serve it.”

“Under construction, the new Medicare Certified Rehab-to-Home Neighborhood.”

“Under construction, the new Assisted Living Neighborhood overlooking Westminster Pond.”

“Under construction, the new Event Hall a Fitness Gym and Wellness Center.”

When we began thinking about our 125th Anniversary, we knew we did not want to celebrate just us. Though we are incredibly proud of our 125 consecutive years in business, we know the commitment, loyalty and trust our communities have invested in us is a pillar for our success. It only made sense, then, that we turn the mirror around and celebrate you! Our communities are filled with wonderful people truly helping others live better lives, making our communities better as a result! Thank you for being a part of this meaningful time in our company’s history and for helping us celebrate our anniversary in such a unique and exciting way.

More about the Mutual125 Campaign: We sought nominations for people who live out the MutualBank Vision of “helping people live better lives”. We received over 300 nominations, and as a result, 125 Finalists were chosen. For two weeks, the public voted on the 125 Finalists choosing an individual who they felt had the greatest impact on others. The BetterLife Award winners were determined by the public for the region where they reside. We honored a total of 17 winners. As prizes, each received money to give to a nonprofit organization of their choice. The five individuals highlighted here are winners in the East Central Indiana area. Signature

HealthCARE By Darrel Radford

Signs of New Times Along the Medical Landscpape

M

uncie’s Signature HealthCARE offers a unique alternative to helping people get well A son or daughter recovering from a traffic accident. A dad struggling with his breathing. A mom adjusting to a hip replacement. One Muncie facility has the capacity to care for all of the above and more. Young or old; short term or long term; from patients on Medicaid to those privately insured; Signature HealthCARE is that place, offering area residents a unique alternative in a complex and confusing medical world. The company goal? To radically change the landscape of healthcare forever.

best opportunity to avoid getting sick again and ending up back in the hospital,” Wells said.

Cited By U.S. News and World Report The 185-bed facility, located at 4301 N. Walnut St. in Muncie, specializes in rehabilitation and long-term health care. Signature HealthCARE is the highest-rated facility of its kind in Delaware County and recently received national attention. It is the only Centers for Medicare Services 5-star rated facility in Delaware County and was recently recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s Top Nursing Homes. “We do a lot of things no one else does,” said Ben Wells, Signature HealthCARE’s chief executive officer. “Some of the things we do today were only done in a hospital five or 10 years ago. We have a nurse practitioner here every day. We have nurses dedicated to making sure that when people go home, they don’t have to come back.”

Innovation and Learning Spirituality is just one of three pillars the company rests its reputation on to compete and serve in an ever-changing healthcare environment. The other two are innovation and learning. “Great ideas can come from anywhere,” Wells said. “Signature HealthCARE encourages stakeholders at all levels of the organization to be vocal about their ideas to improve the lives of patients and clients.” The learning pillar is perhaps one of the most important aspects of Signature’s ability to serve in unique ways. Staff education is ongoing with a masters level educator, Kathy Phillips. “Medicine is an art, not a science and you have to change with it all the time,” Wells said.

Best of Both Worlds With 180 employees, including nurses, therapists and fulltime chaplain Tim Stiggers, Signature HealthCARE offers the best of both worlds. It’s like an extension of the hospital in many respects. It’s also a place where patients can stay for extended periods of time. Half of Signature’s facility is dedicated to short-term, rehabilitation care while the other half is long-term care. “We’re not an old folks home by any means,” Wells said. “Some of our patients are in their mid-40s and early 50s. Some are recovering from injuries received in auto accidents. We have a wide capacity to serve and promote healing in a variety of ways.” Because hospital stays are much shorter today than they were years ago, the facility offers a comforting transition. “After a short hospital stay, some people are not strong enough to go home and be on their own,” Wells said. “Some of our patients are unable to live at home because of complex medical issues like cardiac problems, strokes, hip replacements, COPD or pneumonia. We have patients stay here from as short as 10 days to two weeks or as long as three months.” “Nurse Practitioner Lisa Harber attends to patients daily,” Wells added, “working closely with area hospitals to mirror and coordinate training and care.” Cardiac patients, stroke victims and those who just had hip replacements are commonly found at this facility along with those suffering from COPD or pneumonia. Cardiac programs focus on heart failure, cardiac telemetry monitoring and other complex cardiac conditions. Whatever the reason patients are here, a highly trained therapist is available to help them get back on their feet. Signature HealthCARE has the largest regional therapy department. “Most places have only five or six therapists,” Wells said. “We have over 20 physical, speech and occupational therapists combined.” Wells emphasizes that the dedicated nurses here make sure that when people go home, they don’t have to come back. “Transitional Nurse Wilma Carrier coordinates the care of rehabilitation and short term patients, following them long after they return home to ensure that they have the

Breathelife Program As the Indiana population ages, facilities like Signature become more important. One unique healthcare option offered is the Signature BreatheLIFE program. BreatheLIFE is a partnership among patients, families, physicians and Signature stakeholders to promote the understanding and treatment of pulmonary disease. The program includes full-time respiratory therapists focusing on pulmonary rehabilitation. Other program highlights include:

A Holistic Approach Part of what makes Signature HealthCARE unique is its holistic approach to medicine. Spirituality needs are emphasized and addressed. “We really believe in the holistic approach,” Wells said. “It does help people heal quicker. It helps with depression.” “The spirituality pillar is a company cornerstone where Chaplains serve with hope and humility, striving to meet patients, employees and family members where they are, at the point of their very need,” Wells added.

• Tracheostomy Care, Management and Weaning • CPAP and BiPAP • Pulmonary Function Testing • Percussion and Vibration Therapy • Oxygen Administration • Smoking Cessation Assistance • Pulmonary Retraining/Strengthening • Patient Education The combination and diversity of services offered not only helps patients breathe easier, but their families as well. The respiratory team seeks to alleviate patient symptoms, decrease the need for emergency room visits, increase the ability to manage activities of daily living and offer education necessary to live with a chronic respiratory illness. Signature’s History Headquartered in Louisville, Ky., Signature HealthCARE came to Indiana in May 2013. Today, it has eight facilities in the Hoosier state to go with 120 other sites in Florida, Tennessee, Georgia and Kentucky. Locally, Signature HealthCARE took over what was formerly known as Muncie Health and Rehabilitation. In two years, what was a one-star facility has now achieved five-star status. s Muncie marks 150 years as a city, the staff at Stoops Automotive Group celebrates the diversity of our city while offering world-class products and customer service to people across East-Central Indiana. For instance, consumers now rely increasingly on online research and shopping for their purchases, and four women at Stoops Automotive Group are keeping the Muncie dealership at the forefront of this trend. Erin Konate directs the Business Development Center at Stoops, and she works with Cortney Gale, Christina Mickler and Tobi Padron, who are customer relations assistants in the center. The staff works to educate customers about the technologies that are part of their vehicles, help owners stay in tune with vehicles’ maintenance needs and assist those who shop online via the dealership’s extensive web presence at stoopsauto.com. “Consumers now research vehicles – as they do many other purchases – for a long time online before they ever visit a store,” Erin Konate explained. “For this reason, we now function more as customer advocates than as salespeople. Someone who has researched a car for an average of 90 to 120 days is a wellinformed buyer who expects much more from a dealership, and our job is to ensure that he or she gets this high level of professionalism and support.”

GMC Canyon Named “Best of the Best”

GMC’s all-new Canyon brings GMC’s professional-grade quality to a mid-size truck, and AutoWeek magazine recently named the Canyon to its “Best of the Best” list, praising the truck’s design, utility, features and “perfect size.” “It’s truly a truck in the most honest sense…but refuses to forego the requirements a modern buyer has in a vehicle: refinement, modern conveniences and amenities, high-quality build, practicality and style,” said Autoweek’s editors, who also noted the Canyon is “brimming with a near-luxury experience.” Autoweek’s annual Best of the Best awards are based on the evaluations of eight vehicle finalists selected for their performance, design, build quality, value and significance. A three-day test session at Michigan International Speedway by the editors determined the awards, which include one car and one truck. “Of the hundreds of vehicles Autoweek tests each year, only a relative few truly stand out from the rest,” said Autoweek editor Wes Raynal. “The GMC Canyon is not only one of the best new vehicles on the market, it’s one of the most important, signaling an exciting return to the mid-sized truck segment.” Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing, Buick Exceeds BMW, Mercedes in Quality Awards added, “Delivering class-leading capabilities with GMC’s signature refinement was our goal for Canyon from Day One and As Muncie’s dealership for two of the most-awarded and fastest-growing automotive brands in the history of the industry, Autoweek’s recognition affirms our instincts. Delaware County Fair

By Darrel Radford

Before Muncie was born, Delaware County Fair was bringing families together for fun

Fair set to again offer something for everyone July13-25

M

ore than a decade before Muncie became a city, the Delaware County Fair was bringing families together for unique and memorable entertainment experiences. Its life has spanned through the terms of 40 Indiana governors. And even though the entertainment industry with all its high-techness continues to progress, none of its 21st century gadgets can bring the entire family together like the fair. The 163rd Delaware County Fair will take place July 13 through July 25. And, as always, there will be something for everyone. The 4-H portion will run the entire length of the fair. But in the midst of all the judging, herding, baking, growing, riding and demonstrating is a veritable smorgasbord of entertaining and unique events. Live music from popular artists and local bands will give the event a unique rhythm. The midway will be open from July 20 to July 25, adding even more excitement for both the young and young at heart. The pulling power of majestic horses and magnificent machines are also sure to thrill another segment of fair-goers. One of the most popular areas of the fairgrounds are the grandstands, where local high school musicians excel, trucks and tractors roar, cars crash for fun and the art of being cowboys and cowgirls is alive and well. Here’s a partial list of some exciting events scheduled at this time at the grandstands during this year’s fair: Saturday, June 27th, 7:00 PM, Heartland Hall: Delaware County Fair Queen Contest Monday, July 20: High school bands will fill the air with music and excitement during a contest that has a noteworthy reputation. Tuesday, July 21: The roar of excitement will come from trucks and tractors pulling lots more than their own weight in competitions fair goers have enjoyed for many years. Wednesday, July 22: It will be a survival of vehicular madness as the popular demolition derby is held. Saturday, July 25: A professional rodeo will literally “rope” the attention of fair-goers. Fair-goers will also be able to take a walk back in time with the antique tractor display or The Pioneer Village, which features a horseshoe pit, where attendees can test their skills at the old-fashioned game. Hi-Way 3 PRO Hardware By Darrel Radford

S

ixty years have come and gone since John Sharp started Hi-Way 3 PRO Hardware. Government regulations have forced product changes. The price of light bulbs has leaped to five times what they once were. But the late Sharp would be pleased to see one thing that hasn’t changed: the business philosophy. “What’s the most unique thing that we sell?” store co-owner Dave Smith asked rhetorically. “We don’t sell it, but we give it away – customer service.” “Without customer service, we’re just another store,” Smith continued. “Everybody has can openers and coffee makers, but when you need help, that’s where we come in.” While such items as light bulbs, toilets and water heaters have changed greatly, the friendly, knowledgeable faces inside Hi-Way 3 stores in Muncie and Hartford City have not. “We have people working for us who have experience in the plumbing industry; we have a gentleman who had his own orchard; and we have a retired electrician on our team,” Smith said. “They all work hard to keep updated on the changes that are occurring.” Smith says that kind of expertise enables Hi-Way 3 to offer something the big box stores cannot – answers to the myriad of questions customers may have. For example: “Water heaters starting in April will all be mandated to new federal specifications,” Smith said. “They will be much more efficient and environmentally friendly. So much of the power equipment is going to electronics in the ignition. Now you need specialized equipment to test and see if there are problems.” Hi-Way 3 staffers will be able to assist in these and many other challenges the everyday homeowner faces – including the most basic of needs, the toilets. Smith said the new toilets on the market today are wonderfully efficient, using barely over a gallon per flush. But, do-it-your-selfers may get frustrated trying to fix them. “You have to have the parts to fit these new toilets,” Smith said. Hi-Way 3 has them – and the personnel to guide homeowners. John Sharp’s widow, Toni, co-owns the store with Smith and, along with her many other duties, oversees the greenhouse and gift shop area. “Some updates will be coming to the greenhouse areas soon,” Smith said. During an era of Facebook, smart phones and iPads, a time when incandescent bulbs are a thing of the past, Smith promises one thing won’t change. Hi-Way 3 PRO Hardware’s light will be on, welcoming customers for the foreseeable future.

Student Earns Degree While Fighting Breast Cancer

R

ebecca Jessie credits Ivy Tech with helping her stay on course through treatment. December 13, 2013, is a date that Rebecca Jessie will remember forever. That was the day she was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer – right in the middle of her second year at Ivy Tech Community College. One week after she received her diagnosis, she had a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy. Her doctors, concerned that the rigorous treatment would make her too sick to keep up with her classes, advised her to take a break from school. But Rebecca thought differently. “I knew that I was strong enough to do it. For me, the diagnosis was very hard to take. I needed something positive to work toward,” she says. Three days after starting chemo, Rebecca’s classes started. She was determined to not let anything stop her from obtaining her Associate Degree in Automotive Technology. Rebecca says she has not been alone in her journey. She credits her fellow students and Ivy Tech faculty and staff for helping her stay on course in achieving her dream.

“If it wasn’t for the help of my Program Chair, Phil Morgan, my Instructor Master Technician, Jeff Parker, Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Dr. Ron Sloan, and my fellow students, there is no way I could have come this far. They all did everything that they could to help me make it through my chemo treatment,” says Rebecca. “I was so sick. Sometimes I could barely hold my head up, let alone walk. There were even times when my classmates would literally have to hold me up so I could do my labs in the shop.” During the times when Rebecca just wanted to give up, her instructors kept a positive attitude that helped her continue on. “Their faith in me was unshakable, which gave me more faith in myself and helped me to continue my education,” says Rebecca. “The staff and faculty at Ivy Tech really want to see their students make it.” Despite her challenges Rebecca has maintained a 3.6 GPA and her honor student status. Later this year, Rebecca will graduate, cancer free, with her Associate Degree in Automotive Technology. Her career aspirations include working for a company like Ford or Magna Powertrain in engine or transmission rebuilding. “I could not have chosen a better school,” says Rebecca. “Ivy Tech goes above and beyond to help students like me succeed.”

By Chris Bavender

edication to quality and keeping customers returning – that’s the mission of Kenny’s Floor Covering. Kenny’s Floor Covering was started by Kenny Stafford on 8th Street and Hoyt Avenue and was in that location for more than 50 years. Stafford worked at Warner Gear and did floor covering on the side. In 1957, he opened the store and to this day the business is still run by Kenny’s family members. “The main reason why there have been four generations running the store is because well for one when the business started it was in that era of where sons were expected to help their fathers run the family store and that is the era the Kenny and his son Ron Stafford grew up in,” said Gary Nawodzinski, who is not a family member but has been with the business for a long time. A second store was opened at 2110 W. Enterprise Ave. and, as traffic slowed at the original location, the decision was

made to close it. It was a move designed to benefit customers Nawodzinski said. And it is with that in mind that Kenny’s Floor Covering goal is ensuring every single customer receives the “one on one service that our customers deserve ” “And if they have any issues we will do and we do everything that we can to fix or resolve the issue,” Nawodzinski said. “We also provide the customers with professional installers so that the customers are reassured that they are getting the level of service that Kenny’s strives for.” Kenny’s offers customers carpet, linoleum/vinyl, vinyl composition tile, luxury vinyl planks, duraceramic, laminate, hardwood, and ceramic and porcelain tile for the walls and floors as well as back-splashes. “We also have commercial carpets and other floor coverings as well,” Nawodzinski said. “We also keep in stock floor cleaners and adhesives. The services Kenny’s offers is professional installation of said above floor coverings and also removal of said above floor coverings. We also provides repairs to all floor coverings we provide.” While Kenny’s does its fair share of advertising, word of mouth is very important. “Because people mainly trust those they know who refer them to a place for that place to have done an amazing job and had excellent customer service,” Nawodzinski said. “The one thing we hope our customers take with them with their experience with Kenny’s is that their expectations were exceeded and they intend to return when the need or want arises for new flooring.” And that’s why Kenny’s motto – “Nobody knows more about your floor” – holds true. “Kenny’s just wants its customers to know that because of the years of experience, we can make any flooring project happen per the customers’ wishes,” Nawodzinski said.

Lahody Meats

By Alyson Madsen

R

“Come in and experience the difference at a real butcher shop,”

unning a butcher shop is in Ron Lahody’s DNA. After all, in 1965 his parents gave up farming to buy a slaughter house and run a retail meat and grocery business until their retirement in 1980. A former Marine and Ball State University graduate, Lahody learned how to slaughter, break down meat carcasses, and cut meat while he was employed in the family business for ten years. He spent an additional six years in the industry. So respected at his craft, he was asked to start Alaska’s first USDA slaughterhouse, where he worked for three years before returning to Muncie in 1986. When a Wheeling Avenue rental became available in 2009, Lahody jumped at the opportunity to pursue the meat business once again. To Muncie’s good fortune, Lahody Meats opened on April 2, 2009, specializing in choice and prime retail meat and cheeses. “Ron’s Signature” center cut of prime rib and his three-pepper Jack cheese are among two of his favorite items, not to mention the chicken (with Swiss and spinach) brats and the hand breaded tenderloins. The shop also creates deli sandwiches to go, using “Boar’s Head” meats, sold only at Lahody. “People were just hungry for a meat market,” said Lahody. Muncie is a great place to have a business like this. We don’t have a lot of competition such as Indianapolis does,” he added. Manageable traffic patterns also make Wheeling Avenue a great spot for a business. Other reasons why Lahody is the go-to place for a choice steak or pork chop? “Our size, service, and quality of meat are the main reasons for our success,” boasts Lahody. But they also specialize in beef and pork that are hormone and antibiotic-free. “Having said that, my business is successful due to my great staff. They are loyal, hard working, and very knowledgeable. I appreciate them very much!” “Because we are small, customers and staff get to know each other. People aren’t intimidated to ask questions about preparing meats or which meat might be suitable for a certain meal or occasion,” said Lahody. Two skilled butchers, one of which is also a chef, comprise the staff and can likely answer any questions a customer might have. Several part-time employees fill in where needed. “The fact that we have groceries available is also a huge plus for us,” said Lahody, who prides himself on carrying perishables that lend themselves to the meat. Forget (case ready) meat such as big box grocers sell. Lahody’s is the only place in town that serves all fresh meat. “That’s been good for us,” said Lahody, whose future plans for his shop include a full-time demo-station, an enclosed front porch, and more extensive products. Lahody thrives on the one-on-one interchange of owning a retail business; as a result, he has cultivated a loyal customer base. “Come in and experience the difference at a real butcher shop,” said Lahody.

Muncie Downtown

Development Partnership

I

n Muncie’s case, some might think that a birthday celebrating 150 years is getting up there. But actually, Muncie is quite spry for her age, and this year we have many reasons to celebrate. Take the downtown area, for example. When you walk around, it’s amazing to think how far it’s come over the years. So many improvements and changes have happened, and we aren’t even close to slowing down – let alone stand still. Recently, Muncie Downtown Development Partnership (MDDP), a non-profit organization that exists to create a downtown environment that results in sustainable economic and cultural growth, compiled a survey that shows some interesting facts. For instance, DWNTWN, defined as Wysor Street south to Victor Street, and then Liberty Street to Madison Street, is home to 254 buildings. Featuring many historic structures that date back to Muncie’s founding, these buildings house a wide variety of entities, like locally owned restaurants, shops, art galleries, and offices. Also, many call DWNTWTN home, as there are more than 920 people living in over 380 apartments and houses in the area. There are 246 businesses providing employment for more than 2,100 people in DWNTWN. Sounds like a great birthday party guest list, right? In 2014, nine new businesses opened, creating 32 additional jobs, and two existing businesses relocated here. A few top categories are the 34 retail/dining/nightlife establishments, 35 non-profit organizations, and 61 professional services. These businesses and organizations are committed to being good stewards of DWNTWN. They invest in our city – not only with their business, talent, and services – but financially, as well. In 2014, more than 30 buildings had improvements, such as roof repair, heating and cooling, electrical, and plumbing upgrades. These projects were funded by the businesses or property owners and are estimated at more than $2 million in 2014 alone. In addition, six of the buildings underwent a façade renovation that included painting, cleaning, updating signs, windows, and awnings, valued around $877,000 in 2014. Several others are completing their exterior renovations this year. Couple those numbers with the new streetscape projects on Walnut Street, the hotel, and the parking garage, then that equals a sizable investment committed for our city - estimated north of $32 million. That sure beats any birthday gift card. The momentum continues to build here in early 2015, as we already have eight businesses either newly opening or relocating to the DWNTWN area, and we are excited to welcome them. As we light the candles for Muncie’s 150th Sesquicentennial, we definitely have reason to celebrate all that’s happening in DWNTWN and throughout Muncie. Let’s make this year our best birthday yet. Roofing

The company is always researching newer products and trying to stay on the cutting edge of products.

P

utting the customer first – that’s what it’s all about at Sherriff-Goslin Co. “Most of our customer base is old customer or referrals of other customers. We have created a reputation of fair dealings and hard work,” said Pete Dall, manager of the Muncie branch. “Roofing is a very difficult business with a tremendous amount of liability on every project. If you always take care of the customer over everything else you will survive. Sherriff-Goslin started in 1906. Three generations later the core values at the heart of the roofing company continue – “honesty, integrity and friendly service.” Sherriff-Goslin serves all of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. Sheriff Goslin has served east central Indiana since the 1930’s and was located on Walnut Street for 33 years before building a new facility in 2013 at 205 W. Ontario Drive in the Air Park Industrial Park. “We are primarily in the residential roofing business but also will work on commercial business and agricultural buildings. Any building with shingles of course we are interested in,” Dall said. “Our company offers a 10 year service guarantee on most of our products. If you develop a leak or problem for 10 years

you can call us and we will rectify the situation with no deductible or fee.” The company is always researching newer products and trying to stay on the cutting edge of products. “We are the only distributor of Art-Loc shingles and the shingles now carry a Scotchgard protection by 3M which will keep the roof free from algae for the entire life of the shingle,” Dall said. “We also carry other shingles with the same capability. We also carry three lines of shingles that are class 4 impact resistant that are made with SBS. This makes for a much more pliable shingle that can stand impacts better and last over a longer period of time.” Sherriff-Goslin is also all about giving back to the community. In 2015, for every roof installed by the Muncie branch, a donation will be made to The Secret Families of Delaware County. “So let’s help the community while we are keeping your family dry,” Dall said. “Last year (2014) we donated a roof for Habitat fr Humanity on a rehab of an existing home on one of their projects.” Just another way Sherriff-Goslin tries to make an impact on the community it serves.

Tom Cherry

Muffler

By Darrel Radford

Quality of service is even more important than the location.

I

t all started in 1946, when Harry S. Truman was president. Gas was 21 cents per gallon. The Chevrolet transmission plant was barely a decade old, with its better days still ahead. And a man named Tom Cherry returned from the U.S. Navy to not only rev up his racing career again, but start an automotive repair business at 11th and Liberty streets where he lived. Today, nearly 70 years later, the man who started it all is gone, having died in 1990. But Tom Cherry Muffler is still running as strong as he once did behind the wheel of his roadster. Tom Cherry Muffler welcomes Ray Conley as service manager. Conley brings more than 30 years of automotive experience to the business. He joins a team that collectively has more than 200 years of experience. A leader in the exhaust business in Central Indiana since opening in 1946, the business has expanded since Scott Quirk purchased it in 1989. “We get customers from as far away as Indianapolis for performance stuff, street rods show cars and high-end vehicles,” Quirk said. “We started out as just an exhaust shop but we’ve branched out into brake work and more of a complete automotive maintenance facility,” Quirk said. Tom Cherry Muffler continues to work on heavy equipment, commercial vehicles as well as variety of car care needs to include, oil changes, alternators, batteries, water pumps and engine diagnostic and suspension service. Tom Cherry Muffler prides itself with using U.S. made quality parts when possible. Conley says the quality of service is even more important than the location of the business in today’s busy world. The business, located at 321 W. 8 th St., offers outstanding customer service and puts the customers’ needs first. “I think when you give good, quality service at a fair price, people will find you,” Conley said. “I think people want to find a place where they are comfortable and have somebody they can trust. The fact that our business continues to grow every year speaks volumes about the quality of work here.” Tom Cherry Muffler has plans for expansion in the future.

United Way

of Delaware County By Ken Wickliffe

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MUNCIE! We’re Proud to Be Part of Your History

F

or well over half of Muncie’s 150 year history, United Way of Delaware County has been proud to serve its citizens. Originally organized 90 years ago as the “Muncie Community Fund,” our first fundraising campaign in 1925, led by J. Lloyd Kimbrough, had a goal to raise $77,000. It was a success, as the community collectively gave $86,000. Since those early days, United Way of Delaware County has raised over $92 million dollars for our community. Just imagine how all those dollars, through numerous agencies and programs, have had a tremendous positive impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of Delaware County residents. They have provided affordable childcare and senior care, support for those with special needs and for those fighting cancer, food for the hungry, a second chance at financial stability, a safe place to stay, and much, much more. United Way Supporters have made it possible for thousands of Delaware County residents to benefit from a hand up, to strengthen their resolve, and to ultimately persevere. Since the time of Mr. Kimbrough, United Way has benefited from great leadership by the Campaign Chairs. The roster reads like a Who’s Who of Muncie history—many have had buildings named after them, and many may yet. All have left an indelible mark on our community through their efforts to unite the caring nature of our community members. We’re proud to announce Jim Riggle as our 2015 Campaign Chair. Jim and his team of donors, volunteers and advocates will be building on United Way’s great legacy as we embark on our community’s 90th fundraising campaign. We will think about all for which our community members hope, and about all that is possible when we LIVE UNITED. Together, we can be sure children are ready to succeed at kindergarten entrance; that children are reading at or above grade level in the third grade; that they are successfully progressing through their education; graduating on time and pursuing further education and careers that lead to a stable income and allow them to be contributing members to our great community. Along the way, we can make sure families and individuals have what they need right now and have a plan for how to get financially secure in the near future. We can make sure the elderly not only have what they need to be safe and secure, but they can remain independent for as long as possible. United Way can help along that full continuum thanks to donor and volunteer support. Muncie, we’re in this with you 100% of the way! Together, we’re going to make the next 150 years even better than what came before.

Vogue Cleaners By Darrel Radford

“We only have two things to sell.” “That’s quality and service.”

F

or nearly half of Muncie’s lifetime, one business has kept its customers looking good. Through six decades of fashion fads, societal shifts and anything-goes clothes, Vogue Cleaners has proven to be a faithful servant. Korean War veteran Bill Shroyer has been there from the very beginning, from his first day in business back in January of 1955 to now. His locations have changed over the years but his philosophy is the same. “We only have two things to sell,” Shroyer said. “’That’s quality and service. If we don’t give quality and service, then people don’t need us. “ Today, Vogue Cleaners has four locations: • 302 E. Willard • 600 S. Tillotson • 3608 N. Wheeling • 4100 W. Bethel But for Shroyer, it all started when he returned from serving in Korea Jan. 1, 1955. “I wanted to be in business for myself,” Shroyer recalled. “My brother was good friends with a man who ran a laundry business at 819 S. Walnut called Laundermagic.” Shroyer was able to purchase the business and with the $80 he had left in his pocket, went to the bank and got $80 worth of change for his customers to operate the machines. From those humble beginnings, Shroyer’s business grew. First, he moved to 302 E. Willard in 1958, then in 1966 Shroyer purchased Service Cleaners at 414 E. Willard and operated that. Then in 1972 he merged Service Cleaners with Laundermagic at 302 E. Willard. Shroyer later opened a north branch at 3608 N. Wheeling that added a drive-through facility in 1985. Shroyer felt the need for a westside location. Things were growing in that area and I felt the need to move Northwest and ad another location at 4100 W. Bethel, known as Bethel Pike Shopping Center in 1990. He opened and operated at 3604 Westview Blvd in 1990. Four years later, he established a remodeled drive-through facility at 600 S. Tillotson. “The trend back then was very popular to have a drive-through facility. That’s still true today. About 75 percent of our businesses comes through a drive-through window.” Now with 22 employees at his four locations, Shroyer seems as energized as he was that very first day. He’s survived the ups and downs of the business, the “casual” trends and even a fire that destroyed his 5th location at 1401 W. 8th Street on May 19, 2014, which was his main branch. After the fire Shroyer merged the 8th Street dry cleaning plant with the Willard laundry service location. Here they service both dry cleaning and laundry service. Shroyer purchased 2 of the oldest dry cleaners in Muncie in 1974. Vogue Cleaner which opened up in April of 1928 and Service Cleaners in Nov. 1937. Shroyer has won Muncie’s Area’s Finest for the last 14 years. He has acquired Ford’s Tux in dec 2013 and moved the showroom to the W. Bethel location next to Mancino’s. After 60 years the most success is due to being blessed with the most loyal, faithful and longtime employees. Shroyer has served his community much in the same way he served his country. A life resident of Muncie, he served on the City Council for 24 years, 14 of which he was president. His name has been well-known in local political circles for 4 years. “Muncie’s been good to me,” Shroyer said. “And I think our business has been good to Muncie.”

Dr. Leland Wilhoite By Darrel Radford

For a half-century, East Central Indiana residents have relied on ‘Dr. Wilhoite’

D

r. Leland Wilhoite follows in father’s footsteps, serving some of the same families he did back when it all started Dentistry has changed greatly in the past 50 years, but for generations of East Central Indiana patients, the name they have relied on has remained the same. For nearly 50 years, there has been a Dr. Wilhoite ready to provide dental care covering a number of issues. Dr. John Wilhoite started his practice in Middletown when John F. Kennedy was president. A short time later, he moved his office to 2621 Jackson St., Muncie. Today, in a modern facility, the address he served patients for more than three decades is now home to his son, Dr. Leland Wilhoite, who in ways his father could only imagine back in his day. It all started for Dr. John Wilhoite in nearby Middletown, just across the Delaware County line. Now, some of the same families who received dental care there now are treated by Dr. Leland Wilhoite in his Muncie and Sulphur Springs offices. But Wilhoite’s efforts at improving local lives goes beyond the dentist chair. He is actively involved in the community, serving the Muncie Children’s Museum, Muncie Civic Theatre, United Way and Delaware County Futbol Club, just to name a few. “I feel it is important to not only serve the needs of our community in providing dental care but to be involved in making the community a better place for everyone,” he said. What patients have available to them at the Wilhoite offices today is amazing in the eyes of the man who started it all. “The things Leland is using now are science fiction to me,” the elder Wilhoite said. “It takes him minutes to do some things that used to take me hours. Leland can make his own crowns right in his office.” The younger Wilhoite, who recently celebrated 15 years of service to his patients, has received advanced training in sleep apnea treatments and implantology. For sleep apnea, he offers an alternative treatment with an oral appliance in a safe and effective way that can help patients and improve the their overall health. Meanwhile, dental implants are the permanent replacement of natural teeth, improving not only oral health but also self-esteem. One of the implant patients was his father, who recently had the honor of introducing his son at a Muncie service club meeting recently. “To have somebody want to follow in your profession is a great feeling,” Dr. John Wilhoite said. “I’m very proud of him.”

your smile At Wilhoite Family Dental, we take the health and beauty of patients to a new level. Our patients come first and are cared for with personal attention and genuine compassion. With skillful technique, we consistently achieve unsurpassed results. Let us show you our state of the art facility and techniques to enhance your smile!

Wilson’s

Hearing Aid Center

By Alyson Madsen

“We are hearing instrument manufacturers as well as hearing instrument specialists.”

I

n business for 29 years, Chuck Wilson’s expertise as a licensed hearing aid specialist has helped him gain loyal customers and make a positive contribution to the Muncie community, where he grew up. “I have to give a lot of credit to five incredible employees who have been with the company for as long as 25 years,” said Wilson. It is an added bonus that four of the employees are Indiana state licensed. “I am blessed to have the quality of people who make up my staff,” added Wilson. Wilson’s Hearing Aid Center offers several important services, which include free hearing evaluations and free hearing aid trial periods. The center is one of only two across the state who boasts an “All Make” repair lab. In addition to their own, 100% American made brand of “Hearing Aid,” Wilson’s Hearing Aid Center also handles many other brands. “We are hearing instrument manufacturers as well as hearing instrument specialists,” said Wilson, “capable of completely rebuilding a person’s hearing aid right in our own facility.” Wilson believes that this unique service helps them to be much more effective, because they actually understand all of the intricacies involved. “When you come into our office for a hearing evaluation, there is a good chance that the specialist who tests your hearing and fits your hearing aids is capable of repairing those hearing aids as well if the need arises” said Wilson. The Center’s newest technology allows clients to stream phone calls, television, face time, music and more directly to one’s Hearing Aids from an iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Android. “They help you to hear comfortably in noisy environments and have a nano coating called ‘Hydrashield,’ which provides waterproofing,” added Wilson. Truly a “full-service Hearing Aid company,” Wilson’s Hearing Aid Center offers a three-year warranty and accepts most insurance. Unprecedented, in-house interest-free financing is also available. Married with three children and seven grandchildren, Wilson believes Muncie “is a great place to raise a family and run a business. We are here to help our clients--no games, no gimmicks--and are thankful to the thousands of people who have entrusted us with their hearing-aid needs,” said Wilson. Window World By Chris Bavender

“J.D. Power has selected Window World as #1 in service and quality Windows and Patio doors for the second year in a row.”

I

n 10 years time, Window World has gone from one store in Indianapolis to five around the state, including Muncie.

“After opening the business and quick growth we saw the need for a store in Muncie to better serve our customers,” Kenneth Shake, president of Window World, said. “In 2006 Window World of Muncie LLC was established. We found a store front on North Wheeling Avenue by the bowling lanes and opened the doors in July 2006. We were able to purchase the property at 3508 North Wheeling in 2011 and moved our operation to that site and today it is the current location.” That led to a store in Columbus in 2008, another in Terre Haute in 2010, and a fifth shop in Lafayette in 2013. Window World is a family business. Shake, his wife, Sally, and son, Jeff, are involved with the Indianapolis and Muncie stores; while famiy members Tom and Lilian Fawbush are invovled with the Columbus store; grandson, Brandon, and his wife, Grace, oversee Terre Haute; and granddaughter, Blake, helped open the Lafayette store. Window World Muncie carries a full line of replacement and new construction windows and doors, which leading manufacturers make to specifications. “We do all types of quality replacement windows for your home, Entry doors/storm doors, siding and gutters,” Shake said. “We offer top quality products with lifetime warranties. J.D. Power has selected Window World as #1 in service and quality Windows and Patio doors for the second year in a row.” All Window World vinyl products are made from virgin vinyl rather than recycled vinyl. “Which means they are pure in color and will never fade,” Shake said. “If vinyl is reused it characteristics change and it appears to have a blue tint and fades badly.” The motto at Window World - “Simply the best for less.” “We have sold over 10,000,000 windows to satisfied custom-

ers,” Shake said. Their mission - satisfied customers - who are looking for one thing: “A quality product at a reasonable price, installed by professionals with customer satisfaction,” Shake said. “That’s Window World! What more can I say? We provide a no pressure, friendly, brief in home demonstration and show the customer our products.” Window World has earned the Good Housekeeping seal of approval on its window products. “Today energy saving is a must and our windows meet all the EPA’s standards making homes energy efficient,” Shake said.

Camp Crosley “Camping is where they learn how to solve problems without mom and dad.”

I

n 1997, the YMCA of Muncie sent 497 youngsters to a magical place – Camp Crosley YMCA in North Webster, Ind. Just how magical? Well, consider today, nearly 20 years later, the number of campers has grown to more than 2,900 each year. There’s just something about the overall camping experience that draws kids in, helps them grow – and in some ways, never really lets them go. “Camp Crosley is home,” a youth named Madysen said on a testimonial page. “It’s a life-changing adventure,” said Richard Armstrong, Executive Director of Camp Crosley YMCA. “Camping is where they learn how to solve problems without mom and dad.” As Muncie prepares to celebrate a 150th anniversary, Camp Crosley is preparing a celebration of its own, a 100th birthday. Since 1915 Camp Crosley YMCA has helped to build character and values in the youth it has served. The camp is located on the shores of Lake Tippecanoe, near North Webster, Ind., and has programs year-round for groups of all sizes. An exciting addition will greet campers this summer to help commemorate the 100th anniversary celebration. Kids will encounter the “H2Whoa Zone,” a rubber-lined pond that will give them a natural swimming experience without some of the risks associated with some natural water areas. “It’s almost like a pool without artificial chemicals,” Armstrong explained. “It’s biologically engineered to have the healthiest water you can get.” Armstrong said that many kids don’t experience a natural water environment today, so the H2Whoa Zone will provide that experience.

YMCA

By Darrel Radford

Phase 1 of Camp Crosley’s Centennial Program includes a large pavilion with new restrooms. Phase 2 will add a new welcome center. A branch of the YMCA of Muncie, Camp Crosley has touched the hearts and minds of thousands of children and adults. All of Camp Crosley’s programs are accredited by the American Camp Association. The camp is named in memory of young boy named Crosley who died at the age of four. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Ball. “Our camp would not exist without the Ball family,” Armstrong said. The Y’s financial assistance program ensures that all youth can attend camp, regardless of their family’s economic situation - often kids who don’t get to go on a family summer vacation. “Right now there is a waiting list to attend the camp,” Armstrong said. “Centennial improvements will allow us to host 50 more kids per week.” Log on to www.muncieymca.org/give if you’d like to help.

Bee Clean By David Jennings

“Muncie’s Newest Laundromat”

Laundromat I

t is a shame to bring dirty laundry to such a clean place; but that is what we do here, so “let us have it”.

This is how it works: Put your dirty laundry in a plastic bag and throw it in your car on your way to work. Pull in front of our building and we will meet you outside at your car with a smile. We take the bag; weigh it, and give you a receipt. The next day on your way home come by and get your clean, folded, nice smelling things and go home to your near perfect life now that you don’t have to do dirty laundry. We will be here the next time you need to repeat that drop-off/ pick-up process; and hope that we did so well that you tell your friends and neighbors how much happier your life is now that you know us. We have many large machines including two eight load capacity washers that you can put king-size comforters in. Our total machine capacity is 1,000 lbs; so you can be sure you are going to get the size and number of machines you need to get the job done. We also provide three free ironing board stations, large TV’s, free wi-fi and computer access for those of you needing to do email and or homework while waiting for your wash cycle to end. We have machines with long wash cycles and machines that use a lot of water to be sure your clothes get clean and well rinsed. Our facility has 18 security cameras with cloud based monitoring, and is well lit with access from two busy streets. Being close to BSU campus we decided to make the laundromat open 24 hours. Managers will be around most of that time while we are in our first months of operation and then we will have set manager hours from 7am to 6pm. Come in and see us and introduce yourself. We will be glad to show off our place and field any questions you may have. We are located at 1501 N. Wheeling ave., beside Culligan water systems office at the corner of Bethel ave. and Wheeling ave. You can get more information by calling us at: 765-216-7064.

New laundromat in town. Clean and well lit. • Large machines, and a lot of them. Many amenities. • Best prices. Best service. Best location.
