Esperanza
I
n 1983 Esperanza awarded its first scholarship to a Cleveland Latino student who was about to enter college. Although the organization was not known as “Esperanza” just yet, this was the first of what would become thousands of such scholarships awarded annually and brought to Latinos in Cleveland a community-based organization whose mission was to enhance educational and economic opportunities for Hispanic Americans. The Cleveland Hispanic Scholarship Program, as it was originally known, was formed by a group of Latino leaders and spearheaded by Luis Martinez, the Hispanic Liaison in the Mayor George Voinovich administration. By 1988, the organization was ready to establish its own office and identity. It was then that Esperanza, Inc. was formed, led by Martinez’s replacement at City Hall William Senquiz as its first Executive Director and Al Lopez, a faculty member at Cuyahoga Community College as the first Chairman of the Board of Trustees. | LATINOS mayo
For 27 years, Esperanza has awarded scholarships based on financial need and academic merit in order to help keep the hope of educational and economic advancement alive for recipients. However, Esperanza realized that Latino students often need other kinds of support to reach the position where they can compete for college acceptance, scholarship awards, and jobs. Among the early programs was SISCO (Stay in School for College and Career Opportunities). For middle school students, SISCO’s goal is to reduce the high dropout rate among Hispanic students by focusing on tutoring, enrichment and motivation. At the high school level, SISCO offers after-school programming to help students perform well in school, improve scores on proficiency and college entrance exams, explore career options, and pursue college and job opportunities after completing high school. SISCO program efforts work to improve participants’ decision-making ability, provide service activities, conduct college visits, expose students to new environments, and offer financial Aid information to help students and their parents understand their options.“At a time when Cleveland hopes to expand and retain its pool of local talented leaders, Esperanza is promoting a program that encourages leadership, action and service among young Hispanic women and men. The ELLA (Esperanza’s Latina Leadership Alliance) and ELLOS (Esperanza’s Latino Leaders for

an Outstanding Society) clubs are genderspecific leadership opportunities which bring together the Latina and Latino adult leaders with Hispanic high school youth.� Through ELLA and ELLOS, students discuss Latino issues and how they affect the family and community, develop an understanding of the principles of leadership (position, relationships, success, and production), learn to build consensus
and manage conflict, and better understand how culture influences leadership. An example of the kinds of experiences available to students in ELLA or ELLOS, the ELLA group will visit with Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Sonia Sotomayor in May. With a staff of 10 and utilizing the skills of over 100 volunteers, Esperanza has its eyes on strengthening and reconstituting

programming that affects children and families. Recognizing the importance of elementary school in preparing students for a lifetime that requires continuing education, Esperanza plans to re-introduce its early elementary school reading program. Realizing that families need to support and be able to help their children, Esperanza provides adult English literacy programs. Esperanza’s Computer Center has been a national model since 2002, providing participants with computer literacy training and practical use. The programs Esperanza offers are a result of the realization by its leadership of over the years that students and families need support and assistance for the students to achieve academically, to be competitive for col10 | LATINOS mayo
lege admission and for scholarships – even Esperanza’s own scholarships. And it is those scholarships that are the engine that keeps Esperanza on track. In 2009, 52 students received Esperanza scholarships sponsored by 29 corporations, organizations, families and individuals. Its staff leadership, from William Senquiz, to Myrna Villanueva, Alex Sanchez, Eli Senquiz, Barbara Esperon and now Victor Ruiz, has maintained the organization’s commitment to students, familes and community. To help keep the dream alive, Esperanza is in the midst of a capital campaign called Campaign 25, which the organization launched in 2008, the 25th anniversary of it founding. The fund will go to the William Senquiz
Fund, named in honor of Esperanza’s late founding director, for scholarships and help grow and sustain the organization. On June 26, Esperanza will hold the 20th annual Fiesta Of Hope Scholarship Awards Luncheon at Windows on the River in the Power House at Nautica. Scholarship awardees will be announced and scholarship sponsors acknowledged. Esperanza has had a profound impact on many students and families and the entire community. It reflects the commit-
ment of the Cleveland Latino community to improve the status and well-being of the community. A dramatic demonstration of the community’s commitment to the students and the organization occurred at the 2008 luncheon when Lorraine Vega, the keynote speaker, asked certain members of the audience to stand and remain standing. She called on the founding members of Esperanza’s board, then current and past board and staff, then the early Hispanic community organiza-
tions and their boards and staff, then current organizations’ staff and boards, clergy, colleges and universities represented, and sponsors. She called for the parents and families of scholarship awardees to join those standing and then Esperanza alumni. When all were standing, she told the new recipients to look around and see their “network” of support and said, “The people have been there for you, are there now and will be when you finish your education and come home.” www.latinosmagazineonline.com | 11

In a world of economic falter and an era when multitasking has reached the strategies of the art of war, echoes of doom or rumors of catastrophe run rampant - a perfect analogy of the grander perspective. Last year statistics demonstrated that only 33% of Hispanic students are graduating high school. The national average of graduates was reported at 53%, whereas the State of Ohio reported a 67% graduation rate, leaving not only a difference of numbers, but in lost opportunities of a better life in this region. Where does this leave us, especially in Northeast Ohio? How can we change the alarming numbers or, a better question, correct ourselves for the betterment of our children’s children? Often the results of tribulations are self-reflection, self-reliance and self-love - for we must love ourselves enough to find the courage to face ourselves. In that mirror is found a beautiful shining hope. Since 1991, Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center has served as a non-profit entity dedicated to providing an environment that inspires educational achievement and discipline. Anointed with Puerto Rican poetess Julia De Burgos’ name, who devoted her life to teaching children, and often the symbolic inspiration of national pride, the Center was founded by Daisy Rivera, the Cultural Educational Institute for Boricua Advancement (CEIBA) and the Hispanic Parent’s Union. They brought to reality for our community a long time dream of establishing a family oriented center to serve the Latino youth and their families. The Center serves over 300 inner city students from the ages of 5 to 19 each year. With studies that continue to show the direct correlation that exists between arts-based pro12 | LATINOS mayo

grams and enhanced student achievement, especially among children in urban settings, it is now more apparent than ever. Through programs and activities designed to foster cultural pride, self-esteem, art appreciation, educational achievement and discipline with the focus on music, the arts and leadership. Despite being the organizer of the Puerto Rican Parade and Latino Festival, which is one of Cleveland’s largest summer events, the Center nearly closed its doors. The chances of the annual fundraiser and gathering of peoples happening were looking bleak. However, as often happens, a strange occurrence befell them on the way to their demise. Acting as the hand of fate, six months ago a simple gesture of kindness by La Boca owner Rosita Kutkut towards the few board members holding on for a miracle, turned into a movement. The diligence of many of the board members and especially the current director, who has put in countless hours of time, without pay, has allowed the children who participate in the Center’s programming to have activities and attend events. Of course, the hope was to garner attention to save the Center, but the energy expended was to continue what the purpose of having the Center is for, having fun. Letitia Lopez and the students bring life and laughter to every event they are invited to, as only carefree kids can. When you have nothing to lose and everything to gain, it is a wonderful fearlessness that can be contagious, making nothing impossible. When the perspective is broadened to include miracles in reality, suddenly they happen.
Within weeks of the first donation, the heart of another, Amy Ramos, was moved to help with a greater contribution. But more important, the tireless community development manager for Third Federal Bank, brought legitimacy to the new vision. Reaching out nationally to “La Bruja”, Caridad De La Luz, to host the Spoken Word Challenge with a $1000 prize and poetry workshop May 29th-30th the Center is expanding its programming to include poetry workshops, visual arts classes, modeling and refinement classes. Also in memorial of Palin Perez Jackson (19732009), one of Cleveland’s most influential artists who passed away during this time, a visual arts gallery has been added. Perez Jackson was not only a celebrated artist, but also an entrepreneur and patron of his culture. In 2002, the first Latino owned and managed art gallery in the greater Cleveland metropolitan area was born, La Cosecha Galleria, literally translated, The Har-

vest Gallery. It stood for much more; it was an understanding, a union, an opportunity to display an identity. It was an ability to open the doors to other artists as an outlet to what is possible and was well received by the community, who until then were starved for a place to display their culture and artistic abilities. It always held a warm place in Palin’s heart and a revered memory for those that knew him. Charity, goodwill, and sincerity, all the pillars of faith and morality, suddenly became much more. These words, when put to the test of deeds become the mantra of innovation. The idea that if one does what is just, then all else is irrelevant. Not a new concept, but few actually willing take on the sacrifice of self and ego to go beyond the nonsense to do what is right. Novel is to live the concept of selflessness. Today, instead of taking a last breathe, Julia De Burgos Cultural Arts Center is doing the polar opposite, making better use of its facility by dedicating to the propagation of all forms of art, supporting local, international, emerging and established artists, and the community arts programs. Now planning an ongoing schedule of exhibits and competitions, and produce editions of wide format of events that focus on the benefit of the artists, local businesses, sponsors, and the social community, the Center is implementing a plan self-reliance and sustainability, carefully planned, monitored and evaluated. Through difficult times the hearts of people and their community are made apparent. Every organization, community, family, and person must find the resolve to continue, to adapt, to improve even. Through this, we create a quality of life and a life style that says that we do know how to love ourselves.

Congresswoman Marcia Fudge LATINOS MAGAZINE Tell us about your involvement with Cleveland’s Hispanic community. Congresswoman Fudge: The Eleventh Congressional District is one the most diverse in America. If there’s a language spoken anywhere in the United States, chances are that it’s also spoken in the Eleventh District. Cleveland’s Hispanic community is a vibrant part of that diversity and one that deserves respect and attention from elected officials. When I was elected to office in 2008, I appointed a Hispanic Liaison to improve services to the community. Having a point-person however, is not enough; I continue to be personally involved, learning about the needs and opinions from residents and community leaders. In the past week, I toured two agencies at the heart of addressing challenges facing Cleveland’s Hispanics, HUMADAOP and Esperanza. LM: Tell us about your impression of HUMADAOP. Congresswoman: HUMADAOP is the only certified residential drug treatment facility in the state specifically serving Hispanics. Dr. Carlos Ramos showed me how they provide wrap around services to help clients overcome their addictions, supporting their family members and assisting them in their job searches. They also provide services for the entire community ranging from HIV testing, helping students fill out financial aid forms for college, and operating a youth center. HUMADAOP showed me the importance of taking care of not only clients, but also families and entire communities. LM: And Esperanza? Congresswoman: Because today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, it’s imperative that Hispanic children are making it through high school and going on to college or have access to training for meaningful careers. Esperanza’s new Executive Director Victor Ruiz explained the disturbing reality that only 33% of Hispanics in Ohio graduate from high school. I met with children who take advantage 16 | LATINOS mayo

of the agency’s tutoring, mentorship, after school, and English-literacy programs. This agency’s work will help determine the future of Hispanic Cleveland. LM: Switching gears to policy, what is Congress doing to make higher education more affordable for working families? Congresswoman: Just this week, the President signed into law a college student aid package that provides larger grants for low-income college students, relaxed repayment terms on student loans, and more money for community colleges. This has a direct impact on the ability of Hispanic students to aim high and take advantage of a wide range of opportunities. Vocational training is a core component to lifting families out of poverty, but it is not the only component. It’s imperative that while we encourage some of our students to become medical assistants, others will become doctors and nurses. This law allows lowincome students to seek educational options that may have previously been out of reach by making loan repayment terms more flexible and expanding aid. LM: Many Latinos are curious about the new health care reform. How can people without a job afford to pay for these new insurance programs? Congresswoman: If you cannot afford your own insurance, the government will make sure that you’re covered either through Medicaid or tax reimbursement.
Beyond helping individuals, this plan helps Cleveland’s underserved communities in two major ways. It provides funding to expand community health centers, allowing those who would otherwise go to the emergency room to use their own physicians in their own communities. Also, many black and Hispanic neighborhoods have no access to quality medical care, this bill provides incentives for new doctors to practice in these communities. LM: How soon do you see immigration reform happening? Congresswoman: I think that immigration reform is going to be the next big conversation we will have as a nation. This conversation will not be quick or easy, but with such a diverse set of constituents, I know it will have a serious impact in the Eleventh District. I was lucky enough to be born with the rights, privileges and economic opportunities that come with being an American. However, I know that many of my constituents and their families have had to relocate from around the world for these exact same opportunities. It’s unacceptable to have hard-working people who are contributing to our society live in fear of police, of going to the hospital, or even driving a car. I will do what’s in my power to give these individuals a path to citizenship, that’s why I’ve co-sponsored Rep. Gutierrez’s comprehensive immigration reform bill.

sub-20 y una medalla de oro en las olimpiadas. Él es para muchos en la actualidad el mejor jugador del mundo. Jugó en un equipo que es histórico y ha ganado una gran cantidad de premios; pero ninguno de esos logros se compara con ganar un mundial. Messi nació el 24 de junio de 1987 en

En 2004, declinó jugar para la selección de España y optó por defender la albiceleste. Hizo su debut con la sub-20 en un partido ante Paraguay y jugó el torneo sudamericano sub-20 en el 2005, donde la selección argentina se quedó con el tercer lugar. En ese mismo año participó en el Mundial sub-20 donde enamoró al mundo con sus excelente juego, ganó la bota de oro con 6 goles y logró el campeonato de la categoría. Hungría, pero soló duró 47 segundos en el campo, ya que el árbitro lo expulsó por un agarrón con un defensor húngaro. La temporada 2006—2007 parecía ser la temporada de Messi, pero desagraciadamente el 12 de noviembre—frente al Real Zaragoza—sufrió una lesión en el quinto metatarsiano que lo dejó fuera del equipo de Rijkaard y de los terrenos de juego durante varios meses. Volvió a la acción el 10 de marzo de 2007 con un triplete ante el Real Madrid. Aquel partido terminó 3 a 3 y el último gol lo anotó él al minuto 90. Participó en el Mundial de 2006. Entró de cambio en el segundo partido ante Serbia y Montenegro. El marcador estaba a favor 3-0 y él se encargó de doblar la ventaja, poniéndole un pase a gol a Hernán Crespo y anotando el sexto y último gol del partido al minuto 88. Luego arrancó como titular ante los Países Bajos, pero la magia no le bastó para perforar la portería y el encuentro terminó con un aburrido 0 a 0. Aún así, la albiceleste se calificó como primero y se enfrentó a México en octavos, donde él entró de cambio al minuto 84 y jugó toda la prorroga. Argentina ganó gracias a un gol de Maxi Rodríguez, pero quedó eliminada en tanda de penales ante Alemania en la ronda siguiente. Aunque sus aventuras con la selección argentina apenas comienzan, él ya ha escrito su nombre con el club que lo vio nacer y comenzó a utilizar el dorsal número 10 en el 2008 cuando Ronaldinho dejó el club para irse a Italia. Messi anotó el gol 5,000 del Barcelona en la liga y consiguió 2 goles en la goleada histórica de 6-2 ante el Real Madrid en el Bernabeu. Además es el jugador más joven en anotar 100 goles con la playera azulgrana y es el único jugador del Barcelona que ha anotado 4 goles en un partido de Champions League. Sus logros con el Barcelona son muchos, es un jugador con una carrera corta pero va creciendo a pasos agigantados. Sudáfrica 2010 podría ser su graduacion, ya que la copa mundial es lo único que le falta al joven argentino.

e llama Ricardo Izecson Dos Santos Leite, pero el mundo lo conoce por sus goles, su imaginación para crear jugadas y su habilidad para conducir el balón. Lo apodan “KAKA” y nació el 22 de abril de 1982 en Brasilia, Brasil. Cuando tenía 7 años de edad, su familia se mudó a São Paulo donde mostró sus cualidades futbolísticas jugando para su colegio y a los 8 ya había sido contactado por los entrenadores de São Paulo FC. A los 15, firmó su primer contrato con el club paulista y condujo al equipo a ganar la Copa de Juvenil. Cuando tenía 18 años, sufrió un accidente que pudo haberlo truncado su carrera al resbalarse de un trampolín y lastimarse la espalda; pero el joven se recuperó y siguió su camino hacia el primer equipo. Kaka debutó en enero de 2001 con el 28 | LATINOS mayo

En esa temporada el joven de 19 años anotó 12 goles en 27 partidos y São Paulo FC llegó a la final del ‘Torneio Río-São Paulo’, donde él entró de cambio y anotó 2 goles en dos minutos, para darle la victoria a su equipo sobre el Botafogo por un marcador de 2 a 1. En su segunda temporada, siguió derrochando talento y anotó 10 goles en 22 partidos—un promedio muy bueno para un jugador que se destaca por ser medio-campista. Sus números atrajeron la atención de grandes clubes europeos y la selección nacional. Kaka debutó con la verde-amarela el 31 de enero de 2002 en un partido ante Bolivia, donde los amazónicos salieron victoriosos por un contundente 6 a 0. Posteriormente fue convocado al mundial de Corea-Japón 2002, donde salió campeón del mundo sin mucho protagonismo y regresó a Brasil con 19 minutos en su haber. En el 2003, dejó el São Paulo FC tras dos
temporadas—donde jugó 59 partidos y anotó 23 goles—y opto por ficharse con el Milán que terminó llevándose a la joven promesa por $8.5 millones [de dólares]. Su éxito fue grande desde el primer momento; debutó en la victoria del Milán ante el Ancona por 2 a 0 y en su primer temporada ganó la Seria A y la Súper Copa Italiana. En total, anotó 10 goles y participó en 30 cotejos. En el 2004, ganó la Copa América con la selección brasileña y en 2005 se llevó la Copa Confederaciones que se jugó en Alemania. En ese torneo, Brasil venció a los argentinos en la gran final por un escandaloso 4-1. Kaka anotó el segundo gol de la tarde. Su romance con el Milán duró 6 años; pasó por muchos momentos exitosos con el equipo Italiano, perdió la final de la Champions League en penales en el 2005 ante el Liverpool. En ese torneo, fue nombrado el mejor medio-campista y un año despues anotó su primer Hat-trick en un
encuentro ante el Chievo. En ese mismo año, le metió 3 goles a un equipo belga dentro de la Champions League. El 2006 marcaba el primer mundial en el que él sería un pieza clave en el accionar de la verde-amarela. Anotó su primer y único gol en una justa mundialista en la victoria 1—0 ante Croacia; pero Brasil quedó fuera al caer ante Francia en cuartos de final—algo que fue considerado un fracaso por todos los medios de prensa. En 2007, logro ganar la Champions League donde sumó una asistencia en el partido en que Milán ganó 2-0 al Liverpool inglés. Su accionar durante ese año lo llevó a ganar el Balón de Oro—premio otorgado al mejor jugador del mundo. En 2008, firmó un contrato que lo ligaba al equipo italiano hasta el 2013, pero al inicio del 2009 comenzaron a surgir fuertes rumores sobre su salida hacia el fútbol inglés. Se decía que Manchester City ofrecía arriba de 100 millones [de euros], pero fue el Real Madrid quien terminó llevándose al astro brasileño por 65 millones [de euros], su traspaso fue el tercer fichaje más caro de la historia del club. Kaka llega a Sudáfrica con 27 años, 2 mundiales en su haber (uno de ellos ganado en el 2002), una Champions League ganada y un Balón de Oro. Sudáfrica vera sin duda alguna a un hombre maduro en todos los sentidos. Será una amenaza para cualquier equipo, no sólo por su olfato goleador sino por su estilo único de manejar el esférico, hacer sus pases precisos y crear oportunidades de gol para sus delanteros. Sudáfrica 2010 se presta para que Kaka viva su mejor mundial.

n el fútbol mexicano hay pocos o ninguno como él. Es el jugador que rompe esquemas. Aquel que tiene la onza para cambiar un partido. Lo mismo lanza un pelotazo de más de 70 metros con ventaja para el delantero que cobra magistralmente un tiro libre. Y para cobrar un penal, no hay otro con más seguridad al momento de pararse en el manchón. Todo mundo sabe que no falla. Trasmite la seguridad de un líder. Genio y figura. Muchos aficionados aún recuerdan la famosa “Cuauhtemina” que creo el día que México enfrentó a Corea. Integrante de aquel equipo mexicano que se proclamó monarca de la Copa Confederaciones en el estadio Azteca, ha sabido labrarse un nombre y ser parte de los éxitos en la Copa América y es el mexicano que más goles ha logrado en la historia de la Copa Libertadores con 15 anotaciones. A sus 37 años, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, está en la cima de su popularidad y listo para disputar su tercera y última participa30 | LATINOS mayo
ción en un mundial. Odiado o querido por los aficionados, nadie sin embargo pone en tela de juicio su calidad. “La virtud de esta selección en comparación con las otras en que he participado en otros dos mundiales, es que ésta tiene mucha juventud y talento y ahora habrá que mostrarlo. Aunque se diga que los mundiales sólo son para un grupo élite compuesto por campeones del pasado, México tiene que cumplir su sueño y no pensar sólo en el quinto partido sino en el título”, enfatizó confiado Blanco, cuya popularidad llevó a la cadena televisiva Fox a crearle su propio programa de televisión. Sin embargo, desde que Javier Aguirre se hizo cargo del equipo tricolor ha sido un titular indiscutible. Y es que personifica totalmente al “Guerrero” que el “Vasco” siempre ha deseado con el equipo tricolor. AMARGA EXPERIENCIA

Pero gracias al carácter es que pude regresar a seguir disfrutando de lo que más me gusta—que es el fútbol—y esa es la experiencia que le comparto a mis compañeros, de divertirnos con lo que hacemos”, recordó Blanco. La historia de Cuauhtémoc ha sido de perseverancia y de una ilusión renovada que le permite trazarse nuevas metas. Su talón de Aquiles es su edad, pero en el campo dará el 100% porque él, mejor que nadie, sabe que es su último Mundial y desea disfrutarlo lo más posible.

adie desde aquel lejano Mundial de 1966 levanta tanta pasión en un pueblo como él. En Inglaterra, esa maravilla llamada Eusebio sorprendió al mundo y lideró a Portugal hasta terminar en el tercer sitio para sorpresa de propios y estrenos. Ahora, cuando todo el mundo futbolístico espera que Sudáfrica 2010 sea el Mundial de Lionel Messi, al menos los aficionados portugueses alientan al jugador cuyo traspaso hizo historia ya que el Real Madrid tuvo que pagar $132 millones de dólares al Manchester United para hacerse de sus servicios. Ganador del Botín de Oro en el 2007 y considerado el jugador FIFA del 2008, es el único que en clase y calidad puede rivalizar con Lionel Messi—aunque el argentino lo haya opacado en la liga española y la Champions. Pero Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aveiro, mejor conocido como Ronaldo, espera tomarse una revancha en Sudáfrica y demostrar quien es el mejor jugador del orbe. mente se incorporó a las filas del Clube Desportivo Nacional, donde continuó con su meteórica progresión, convirtiéndose ya en una de las más brillantes promesas del fútbol portugués. En 2001 realizó una prueba de 3 días para fichar por el Sporting de Portugal, y finalmente dejó el Nacional para pasar a formar parte del club de Lisboa, donde inicio su meteórico ascenso debutando a los 17 años en la primera division de Portugal y siendo campeón. El entrenador Alex Ferguson fue quien le vio su potencial y lo firmó para el Manchester United donde tomó el sitio nada menos que del astro británico David Beckham y debutó con los Diablos Rojos un 16 de agosto de 2005, brillando con luz propia no sólo en la Liga Premier sino también en la Champions League hasta ser considerado el mejor jugador del orbe. Por su velocidad en los espacios largos, fue bautizado como el “caballo”, pero tiene mucha habilidad para jugar por las dos bandas y es un “depredador” del área, ya que cuando 34 | LATINOS mayo
tiene oportunidad resuelve con excelente técnica de disparo en ambas piernas. Tiene además una estatura de 1.86 mts., lo que aunado a su demarque natural, permite ser un peligro en los remates de cabeza. Y por si fuera poco su depurada técnica le permite cobrar los tiros libres con maestría y cuando conecta el balón adecuadamente, su golpeo supera los 100 km/hr.
META INCONCLUSA Pero, como todo en la vida algo le falta a Ronaldo y eso es ayudar a Portugal a llegar a una final y ganarla. Sus logros con la Selección de Portugal donde debutó un 20 de agosto de 2003 ante Kazajistán, son notables. Representó a su selección en los Juegos Olímpicos de Atenas 2004. Pero, donde dio el paso a la primera línea del fútbol mundial fue defendiendo a Portugal en la Eurocopa
