On Business Acumen Business acumen is something most entrepreneurs are lazy to share with their employees. Understanding how the business world works can be a tough toil to do, mostly when the needs of our communities or consumers keeps changing. What is surprising is that most entrepreneurs themselves don’t understand the ideal perspective behind business acumen or do not know what business acumen is. The market has enough for every entrepreneur to swallow the benefits but some choose to fail by not familiarising themselves with business insight. Having strong business wisdom will help raise more capital when you need it, attract and retain customers, and run your business successfully.

“Networking is an essential part of building wealth” Armstrong Williams

I

www.circleofconcern.co.za

n my previous article I spoke about how you can steal a Job by using soft skills. In this this month’s edition I focus on networking as part of creating career opportunities. Quite often we are confronted by words such as nepotism and favoritism in the working environment, but this month’s article targets the legal way of getting the Job through networking. Networking is a crucial aspect that one should practice when developing their careers. Although you may have the necessary skills, qualifications but without connections you are mostly likely to be sidelined and be put on the bench –away from the game. Without connections there is a great chance that you might not become part of the coach’s plan. Networking can be defined as meeting and getting to know people in your field so that you can have access to information about your career. It involves building ongoing relationships to exchange advice and information with individuals who are established in your field. This is an ongoing process which needs to be maintained and exchanging of information goes back and forth between two or more individuals.

One of the factors could be that you haven’t created enough networks or support that can help you to achieve your goals. In some instances jobs may not be advertised but offered to individuals whom have been in contact with the right people. Sounds like nepotism doesn’t it? But that’s not the case. If an individual had to get an opportunity in this method, it means that they have negotiated their space by networking and making sure that there are known so that when such opportunities come to their door step, they get first preference. Networking could also help you to gather information about possible Job openings, effective ways of writing you CV and how you can prepare yourself for interviews. Imagine that my career was like that strong signal network on my phone, this will mean that I will be informed about my career prospects, the labour market –the demand and I will be empowered to make an effective career decision based such issues. if you were to sit down with established Business persons having tea in the local café, you are most likely to hear these words “Networks, Connections, relationship and agreement “. These words are found in the vocabulary of established individuals and networking is what led them to have that cup of tea in the first place. In Conclusion sometimes you need to know someone to get somewhere and in order to get that something. “I network like a shepherd with a flock of sheep. I’m constantly on the lookout for wolves, and I’m always in the mood for a good lamb chop. Networking is people looking for people looking for people” ― Jarod Kintz,

Deputy President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa was asked to tell the Farlam Commission of Inquiry why AMCU was not involved in the labour unrest. "Why were you only in a meeting with the National Union of Mineworkers? I am not aware that you made any attempts to contact AMCU. Why didn't you?" asked Dumisa Ntsebeza, for the families of killed miners. Ntsebeza was cross-examining Ramaphosa at the commission hearings in Pretoria, regarding his role as a Lonmin shareholder and non-executive director. Ramaphosa, a former NUM general secretary, said he did not have the contacts for the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union.

www.circleofconcern.co.za

"I referred to Senzeni Zokwana (then NUM president), Frans Baleni (general-secretary) and James Motlatsi (founding president of NUM) because I know them and have worked with them," said Ramaphosa. "I was not able to make any reference to any leader of AMCU because I do not have any details of them and I have not dealt with them." Ntsebeza said as at August 2012, Lonmin and Ramaphosa believed that AMCU was behind the rock-drill operators' strike and the accompanying violence. "Wearing your hat as a skilled negotiator, it was even more reason for you to engage them (AMCU). The fact that you didn't have Joseph Mathunjwa's cell phone number cannot be a reason. Lonmin had it," said Ntsebeza. The commission, chaired by retired judge Ian Farlam, is investigating the deaths of 44 people during strike-related violence at Lonmin's platinum mining operations at Marikana, near Rustenburg in the North West, in August 2012. Thirty-four people, mostly striking mineworkers, were shot dead in a clash with police, over 70 were wounded, and over 250 arrested on August 16, 2012. Police were apparently trying to disarm and disperse them. In the preceding week, 10 people, including two policemen and two Lonmin security guards, were killed. Circle of Concern Magazine

Ramaphosa said AMCU was denying involvement in the mines unrest at the time. "This was what one could call a perfect storm that had evolved. AMCU was saying they are not involved so, in a way, abdicated. The CEO of Lonmin had taken ill and was not on the spot to negotiate. "NUM itself was not really involved. We have heard that the workers had lost confidence in the NUM. As a non-executive director, not involved in the management of the company, I relied on the management team to deal with these matters," said Ramaphosa. He said the Lonmin management had the responsibility to engage the unions.

www.circleofconcern.co.za

Ntsebeza said that when Ramaphosa decided to step in and engage, he only contacted NUM-aligned people, excluding AMCU. "We know that this was a strike for salaries and the demand was for management to engage with them. The quickest and most amicable way would have been for Lonmin management to address the strikers.

"NUM itself was not really involved. We have heard that the workers had lost confidence in the NUM. As a non-executive director, not involved in the management of the company, I relied on the management team to deal with these matters,"

"You are an experienced negotiator, you know about give and take. When the rock drill operators asked to meet management, they were told that the mine would talk to the NUM. Were you told on the 15th August that Mr Mathunjwa had spoken to workers about going back to work?"

Ramaphosa said he saw Mathunjwa's visit either in newspapers or on television.Ntsebeza said he would argue that Ramaphosa, as a former NUM general secretary, Lonmin shareholder and director, was uniquely placed to influence the warring parties to come to the negotiating table. Ramaphosa disagreed.

www.circleofconcern.co.za

"I was just a non-executive director. I was not involved in the wage negotiations. The fact that I was former NUM general secretary was of no bearing in this. "The fact that Shanduka was a shareholder was also of minimal bearing. "We were just a minority shareholder amongst a body of bigger shareholders," he said. Ntsebeza said nothing was preventing Ramaphosa from initiating negotiations, if he had decided to do. Ramaphosa responded: "I should be flattered by the importance you seem to think I had, and the influence. It is simply not the case.

"When one is a non-executive director of a company, you deal with issues as they are presented to you by the management. You do not have the power that you seem to ascribe to a non-executive director." Concluding his crossexamination, Ntsebeza said Ramaphosa, who once led black economic empowerment initiatives, had ironically procured a legal team "nonrepresentative of the black economic empowerment". "Your legal team is not reflective of an empowerment process. If you look at all the legal teams here, about 90 percent are non-racial," said Ntsebeza. Ramaphosa complained: "Mr Chairman, does this have any relevance to the issue we are discussing now?" Farlam said Ramaphosa could answer the question, if he wanted to.The deputy president responded: "Message understood". His legal team was led by lawyer David Unterhalter. Ramaphosa will still be on the stand when the public hearings resume.

LEADERSHIP

Circle of Concern Magazine 32

VS HEADSHIP

Issue 6 | September 2014

Rethinking

www.circleofconcern.co.za

Leadership Heading is leading but leading is not heading. There is a need for us to rethink both leadership and headship because one of the two has not been effective in both social and business spectrum for the past years. In short headship was effective during the times of Jan Van Riebeeck but lost its

Adolf Hitler

Circle of Concern Magazine 33

rhythm when egalitarianism theory came in effect. How do you define leadership? Is it define by the office or position occupied or actions? Headship is the state of leading but in a command way whereas leadership is the process of allowing your followers to fly as high as they can. When taking a glance at history, there is a lot to criticize not because we know much just because the then headship was inhuman and cruel. Judging is not good but telling the truth is. Was Adolf Hitler a leader or a head of NAZI? I honestly never seen an article referring to Adolf as the head not a leader, then why we keep calling him a leader while he had headship features (primacy or command)? Hitler headship did not promote freedom of expression by his followers which drives the definition to dictatorship. Can you work you only take commands? Even if you say yes then the

production won't increase. Leadership definition is not limited to political and business spectrum only. The reason behind corporation failure is the undivided definition of leadership and headship. The clear understanding has to be established to ensure that followers comprehend how your organisation is ran. Dr David Molapo explains leadership as the process of turning followers into leaders not maintaining them. This is undisputable truth. Your organisation's success depends on the level of freedom and smiles your followers or workers maintains. As a leader you should be able to influence your team to achieve more not by using supremacy or command. A leader is someone who influence followers to pursue his/ her vision.

Politics versus The Market

I

t will not be surprising to see market players leaning by political parties to achieve more. Minister of trade and industry Rob denies has called on member of parliament to think more carefully before associating themselves with complaints raised by market players, according to the DTI media statement released on 29 august 2014. It is globally known that politics and business married each other but the abuse of such relationship is not good at all. The comment came after DA’S MPs Hill-Lewis and Dean Macpherson call for reduction of the time taken by National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) to process Letters of Authority (LOA). The NRCS is an entity of the department of trade and industry established to administer compulsory specifications and other technical regulations with view to protect human health, safety ,the environment and ensure fair trade in accordance with government policies and guidelines (according to their website). Currently it takes 120 days to process such Letter of Authority (LOA) compared with other countries. The CEO of the NRCS, Mr. Asogan Moodley showed that it was important that the organization be given adequate time to carry out its inspections work before issuing Letters of Authority (LOA). The CEO is advocating for enough time while market players are at the opposite side of it. DA’s criticism of the institution and behalf market players resulted to Rob Davies engaging with the CEO of NRSC. It must be voted that since the inception of NRSC, It has destroyed products of more than r50 million. The destruction of unsafe products is in line with the NRCS mandate of protecting human health, safety, the environment and enduring fair trade.
