Spatial adaptation of invisible parameter Grand Prize at 2010 Sejong Architectural Exhibition 2010 Graduation Project , Korean Architecture Award Submit Theme : The Cites of Interaction Tutor : Moon Hee Kyoung(AA School, DRL MArch. Machanic Studio, London) Critic : Kwon Jun Bum(Professor. Doctor of Engineering / Texas A&M) Personal Academic Work 2010. 6 - 2010. 9

This project was starting from my private memories. I was born in mine village and my father worked on the Dong-won mine company as mine woker. So Father’s black hand and the red stream located village center was familliar scene for me. But mine industry was rapidly down from 1980s Ever since the shuttering of the mines in the early 2000s, residents have gone to such lengths to ensure their survival by “choosing” to build a casino and leisure facilities. Contrary to expectations, this turned out to be an encroachment on their community ties. The residents thus have come to terms with the inconvenient truth about their town being a “casino town” instead of having a proud mining heritage of “industrial warriors.” Many of the residents have even made the difficult choice of leaving their hometown in the wake of the rapid shifts in the area’s industrial structure. They felt that the towns’ identity was erased given the resulting development spree over the past several decades. I want to give this project to my old village changed a lots of things and our fathers.

Site history

Seoul

The population of Gohan and Sabuk(mine villages located Jung-sun, Kang-won) is approximately five to six thousand for each of the two towns. Considering that Gohan-eup was once home to more than 40,000 people, it won’t be too unfair to say that the town is literally taking its last breath of life. For years after the closure of the mines, officials tried to wipe away the area’s past with public projects that claimed to “rationalize” the community. Now, it is difficult to differentiate the history of the land from the flashy appearance of Kangwon Land and the rapacious, jackpot-hungry eyes of visitors. Historic villages are groaning amongst motels and shops that have recently sprung up everywhere. In a country where farming is impossible, people’s lives are at best desolate.

Over the past few decades, useless coal was stacked up on the hills in the Sabuk. It was transported by mine tub and left a trace of tracks. The trace is “growth ring” symbolizing industrial period.

But this is not to be the end of Miner`s life. They are dying every day from “Black lung” disease and growing away from their family, society and history.

Coal-mine town`s environment is becoming more polluted each day by stacked useless coal. It cause an oxidation-reaction and AMD(Acid Mine Drainage) is spilled into the stream. Thus, the ecological system is destroyed and the recovery of water resources will costly.

Site purification process Useless coal that was stacked up on the hill about 50 years have caused pollution of underground water and this polluted water runs into near stream. But it is not easy to find a solution about this problem. Because useless coal‘s range is wide-spreading and it is piled on the hill deeply about 8~10m. Growth ring system that is buried under the hill purify polluted water in the each sector and this purified water flow into central purifying system. All water of the hill pass through second purifying process for discharging fresh water into near stream.

Purification of Useless coal hill Nature pollution in this site is started from useless coal hill and it need a purification system that can control polluted water, not already existed purification facility. I propose purification system on the useless coal hill as a controling facility of poluted water and museum of histoy about miners, sa-buk. This building consist of two parts; overground for the human space and underground for the pufied water.

Critic : All professors of school of architecture, Sejong University Collaborative Work as a member of team with 12 members - Process Development, CAD Drawing, Phisical modeling Material Study, Structure Design, Construction 2009. 3 - 2009. 5

People live with lots of materials which surroundpeople. Some of them are thought of as worthless things by reason of familiarities and absence of worth or passed over unconsciously. We use the value of those things that the structure, form, space is configured and shows the potential of a rubbish thing to set our face to build the pavilion. We have reinterpreted it.

Our design was composed with combination of only steel pipe elements. As a result, it have too high weight. So we must be certified safty of our design. ‘MIDAS’ program proves that this simple structure system can support heavy facade.

Geometry and Functions in Trace Spatial adaptation of invisible parameters 2010 Studio Project Theme : Renovation of KT office building in An-yang Tutor : Moon Hee Kyoung(AA School, DRL MArch. Machanic Studio, London) Critic : Kwon Jun Bum(Professor. Doctor of Engineering / Texas A&M) Personal Academic Work 2010. 3 - 2010. 4 ( 8 weeks )

Renovation project must design not only space and facade but also structure and equipment system from analyzed existing building. We were researching everything of a given building like space

system, sturucture stress weight and equipment system. Then we had a very interesting question. “Why don’t you design from invisible source?”.

This renovation project entitled ‘Geometry and Functions in Trace’ is inspired by invisible trace like

movement of visitor, existing building’s functions. We want to make a new process for renovation using the new parameter.
