The collection consists of more than 60,000 items (books, DVD/ video, CDs and periodicals) with about 15,000 registered patrons. The Columbus location averages 50,000 visitors a year. The library has a public Internet access center, NC-LIVE (via a password), a statewide project providing access to citations and in many cases full-text copies of articles from thousands of periodicals. Access for users is provided to a large digital collection of audiobooks, including current best sellers. A recent addition to the Columbus location is the Entrepreneurial and Business Reference Center, which is the result of a library partnership with JobLink and the county’s economic development committee. The library offers weekly children’s story time events, a Summer Reading Club and programs for elementary and preschool school children. Once a month the bookmobile visits sites such as nursing homes, day care centers, the Meeting Place and Tryon Estates. For adults, the library offers Together We Read, a popular Southern Appalachian regional book discussion and cultural programming series.
