Letter from the editor Ever go wandering from room to room only to forget why? This third issue of 2017’s Our Country Home is all about tools and tech—including how some of today’s techy-tools in what’s called a “smart house” may just help you fi nd what you’re looking for. Smart houses can also help you take care of your aging parents (without being there), secure the family jewels, tell you if something’s about to go sour in the fridge and much more. Read all about it in Joe Cooke’s “House of the Future.” After you’ve pondered what all your tomorrows might bring, take a look at some garden gizmos from the past and see how many of them you can identify in “Bygone Garden Tools.” A lot of them are even making a comeback. Wallis Brandt has done her research in explaining the old vs. new. Speaking of tools, ever hear of The Human Tool? Neither did I, until I met Jaquel Theis. Watching her organize an artist’s workspace was not only educational, it was awe inspiring. Everything you want to know about The Human Tool—including what a human tool is— is hammered out in our interview. One of our newest writers, Andre Turan, also happens to be the personal trainer to Jared Kaufman of P.N. Fire & Burglar Alarm Company. The company’s

history is a story of hard work and family ties that started in Brooklyn and eventually rooted itself in Monticello, NY. Find out how three generations of Kaufmans have managed to keep many of us safe in meeting the many challenges involved with changing technology in “Securing Our Community.” And then take a shower. After reading Annemarie Schuetz’s piece on fantasy showers, I want one. You will, too. A smart house, complete with a security system, all the latest garden tools, a reclining shower, and a weekly visit from The Human Tool—is that too much to ask? Ramona Jan Editor

By JOE COOKE Smart homes seem covered in 1950s glitter. Jet packs! Robots! Push-button fast cooking! The self-propelled floor cleaner!

We don’t have jet pack travel yet, and a Roomba is less scary than the RCA-Whirlpool floor cleaner (go look it up), but automated lifestyles are actually here. Real smart homes are about security, convenience, and the ability to age in place.

Automation “makes a life more comfortable,” said Larry Supon, president of Automated Lifestyles in Moscow, PA. “It gives you peace of mind. It’s not really about the cool gadgets.” Continued on page 6

HOUSE Continued from page 4

‘Open the pod bay doors, HAL’

Okay, smart tech will not lock you out. But it will keep your home safe, even when you have a stupid moment right before going on vacation. Did you lock the door when you left? As long as you have an Internet connection, you can check, no matter how far from home you got before you remembered. Push a button, and the door locks and the house settles down into whatever condition it lives in when you aren’t there. Smart tech lets you program the lights to switch on and off, as if you’re moving from room to room, says Supon. Shades can be

raised or lowered. Motion sensors will notice if someone’s inside your supposedly empty house. Second-home owners can install sensors that let them know if the oil tank is about to run dry, says Supon. Anyone who has had water line breaks due to freezing will approve. And parents who go away for the weekend, leaving teens in charge, will know exactly what happened in the house. Finally, remember, even HAL couldn’t keep David Bowman out of the ship for good. With smart tech, the human is in charge.

‘I think the chicken’s green’ To many, smart tech means convenience. The smart fridge can tell you if the milk’s expired, says Richard Colletti, president of Appliance City in Monticello and Middletown. “And you can get on your phone and see what’s missing.” Washers can be turned on remotely. The Friedrich air conditioner “can be started before you get there,” said Colletti, which makes it popular with second-home owners who can switch the air on from the city and arrive at a cool country house.

‘I’ve fallen and I can’t get up’ It’s more than a bad fall. Smart homes help keep discreet tabs on your aging parents. Automated Lifestyles, for one, offers a range of products. Sensors can be attached to medicine cabinets; if the door didn’t open, the folks may not have taken their pills. Motion detectors can pick up whether Mom has left her bedroom all day, says Supon. Worried about bladder infections? Monitor how many times Dad goes into the bathroom. Parental privacy is preserved, since there are no cameras. And it’s cheaper than a nursing home. Infrastructure

Smart tech like the above doesn’t require you to destroy your house to accommodate it, says Supon. “There are very robust wireless solutions.” There are simple changes, too. “You can replace the thermostat, retrofit security systems, lighting systems.” Wireless means of course you need WiFi and a broadband Internet connection, plus a smartphone to manage things from afar. Costs for an automated house can start around $3,000, and work their way up, depending on what you want. Smart appliances are a way to try it for less.

The future is Skynet

The main problem is not whether tech will become self-aware and turn on you, it’s what fellow humans might use it for. Can your tech spy on you? Can it be hacked? “You need a good home cybersecurity system,” said Supon. For instance, “The printer is very hackable. Lots of people scan documents and don’t think about it.” And printers are part of a wireless system. As is, of course, your smart home. If there’s a camera or microphone on an appliance, if everything’s connected to the Internet, then yes, technically, your fridge could be spying on you. Hence, read the fi ne print on all documents, have a security analysis and a good fi rewall. In the end, it’s a judgment call. Automated lifestyles aren’t for everyone, although elements of it might be. And in the future, who knows? We might all have a Rosie the Robot and a space-age house to call our own.

‘Would you like to play a game?’

“Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock” rather than “Global Thermonuclear Warfare.” If you want someone to talk to or play games with, there are the smart speakers, currently Amazon Echo (with Alexa), Apple’s HomePod (with Siri), the Invoke with Microsoft’s Cortana and Google Home. Most people use them to get the weather, look up stuff on the Internet, keep tabs on appointments, make grocery lists, briefly entertain the children with random facts, play music, and Google or Siri can call 911 if you are hurt and are in shouting range. Amazon’s Alexa is happy to shop for you. (Perhaps too happy. There are a lot of stories out there about Alexa’s shopping habits). Check the individual sites for device info.

The Human Tool Interview by Ramona Jan There are tools for just about everything. And then there’s The Human Tool, Jaquel Theis, pronounced Juh-Kel Tice; “Theis rhymes with nice, she says. While interviewing The Human Tool, I had the privilege to watch her organize an artist’s workspace (pictured): What exactly is a Human Tool? I am human and I consider myself to function as a tool, and like a tool, I get the work done. Can you give some examples of jobs you’ve done as The Human Tool and otherwise? My work has stemmed in all directions from banker to cheesemaker to metal worker. The list is very long. To name a few more: carpenter assistant, house painter, landscaper, photo stylist, stone worker and personal driver. I also have experience driving large trucks and 16-passenger vans with a canoe trailer. I’ve mowed lawns, been a farmhand, house cleaner, waitress, bartender and

service clerk. I was the manager at a Dollar Store when I was 18, but I found anything with a strict schedule didn’t work for me, so I had to use my own skill sets to formulate a job and grow my own business as The Human Tool. All my work is on an as-needed basis. So each job I do may last a day, a week or spread out over months. Going from job to job, are you concerned at all about job security? I do my best to maintain a law of attraction mind-set. I have tried to work the repetitive nine-to-five with a steady paycheck and a 401K investment, but found it boring and unrealistic for my personality. I take it day by day. I am a problem solver so I will fi nd a solution to surviving, too. At times, in winter when my work is slow, I worry I am not going to be able to pay the bills. Around here, as you know, everyone hunkers down for the winter and most projects are put off until the spring. I do my best to remain positive, knowing the work will come when the birds return. HUMAN TOOL Continued from page 10

What influences led to becoming The Human Tool? I grew up in a very organized home. Everything had its place and was kept clean. My mother and grandmother, along with the extended family, are all very organized and hard workers. I was taught you had to work each day: stack wood, mow the lawn, sweep the floor—something. You had to do something. So I have been working my whole life. My grandfather was a woodworker and I would hang with him in the shop. I grew a desire to build and started my own building projects at a young age, and took classes in grade school in woodworking. What ‘handyman’ skills do you have? I can fi x basic things, door knobs, hang shelves, rig something (not everything) to work when it’s broken. I can also create something out of nothing. For example, I have antique outdoor light shades with no electricity to hook a real light to them, so I JB welded solar lights to them and made my own attachments to hang them. What carpentry skills do you have? My carpentry skills are basic. I measure and cut, drill and drive. I have built many small structures, using a skill saw, table saw, and chain saw. I have experience with most tools: grinders, drill press, dremels, reciprocating saws, and more. Have you ever run into any problems when negotiating a job because you are a female? Yes, that happens from time to time. It may have mostly been my age in some of those circumstances. I was 22 when I fi rst started implementing my skills for work. People would look confused when I would say “I can do the work.” I feel because I was young and female, people didn’t trust my experience and ability to observe and apply.

What are your essential actual tools? My mind is surely my main tool. I am a problem solver. I am always formulating a way to make something better. As for practical tools, I consider my impact driver my third hand. I always have as many tools with me as I feel I may need, but a Sharpe and a Leatherman is always in reach. As The Human Tool, what job are you most proud of? The work I’ve done on my own land is what I am most proud of. I built a stone fi re pit, structural walls and tiny buildings, numerous gardens, and moved and developed the land. My most recent accomplishment is my garden/garbage shed. What job does The Human Tool enjoy the most? Organizing is my most favorite and fulfi lling job. Every single client I have organized expresses relief once they’ve seen what I’ve done. A clear space is a clear mind, I always say, and my clients see that this is true. In fact, when I fi nished organizing a space for my most recent client, she said, “I can finally breathe.” How is organizing different from mere cleaning? Organizing is a puzzle. It takes a deep thought process. You have to have a base plan before you begin, and then that plan changes as you go and then you have to make another plan. In cleaning, generally everything stays where it is. In organizing, generally everything is moved. I consider my organizing as art. And how are you a “tool” in organizing? I am a tool in organizing because I function like a tool. My brain can quickly decipher what goes where and with what. I am a tool in general because you can’t fi nd a tool (or robot) in any store that can do what I do. It’s like buying a combination kit of tools rather than just a single Continued on page 13

tool, except I don’t come in a box, I come in human form. My arms, legs, back, hands, feet, brain, eyes, ears and voice are all tools and I use them to the best of my ability. During the interview, The Human Tool encouraged the artist to let go of things he wasn’t using anymore and to store the implements he wasn’t employing at the moment. She then quickly organized his brushes and other essentials in a place

within good reach of the slop sink. In addition to the job at hand, The Human Tool also showed me how to better work my camera, and both the artist and myself how to load clear tape onto a packing tape device that neither I nor the artist could figure out. Bygone garden tools... ...making a comeback By WALLIS BRANDT Throughout the centuries, tools of all sorts have evolved in fi ne increments. Some tools have become mainstays, while others have fallen to the wayside. Pictured here are a few by-gone garden tools that are making a comeback, some with additional features, others in an improved form and one or two that haven’t changed much at all.

4. Hoe-Spade

2. Bulb Planter

When planting blubs, this vintage bulb planter removed just the right amount of soil (at the perfect depth) from your garden bed. One step on the small rod that runs perpendicular to the hollow tube fi lled the tube with dirt. Extract the bulb

planter, and there’s a hole of ideal depth and width in which to place your bulb. You know what they say: Don’t fi x it if it ain’t broke. This item is popular again in pretty much the exact same form.

This old hoe-spade is akin to the combo screwdriver that enables you to change from flat to Phillips-head in an instant. It’s an amalgam of mini-hoe and spade with a three- to four-foot-long wooden handle. Simply twirl the tool from hoe to spade as needed. New and improved combos with even more possibilities then this one can be found at your local Agway affi liate (see locations listed under #3).

1. Aerator

Handled like a carpet sweeper (or vacuum cleaner), this bygone aerator was pushed and pulled over an entire lawn. Aerators open passageways for oxygen to reach the roots of plants where worms also breathe through their skin. Many of today’s aerators are likely to be towed behind a lawnmower or four-wheeler for faster and possibly more efficient delivery of CO2.

3. Claw

Most claws are merely hand tools the size of garden trowels. The newest claws, with their large angled spikes and patented handles, are the ultimate in aerating/weeding tools. Just jab the spikey part (pictured) into the earth and twist—up come the weeds and, at the same time, in goes the air. No more bending at the waist or kneeling in the dirt with this long-handled device. At various local Agway affi liates (Delaware Valley Farm and

Garden in Callicoon, NY; Liberty Home and Garden in Liberty, NY; Monticello Farm, Home and Garden in Monticello, NY; Honesdale Farm and Garden in Honesdale, PA; Lake Ariel Home and Garden in Lake Ariel, PA); you can choose from many different brands and styles.

5. Long-Handled Large Spade-Mini Shovel Not quite small enough to be called a spade or large enough to be a shovel, this vintage pairing of shovel/ spade saved Grandma’s back by enabling her to garden

while standing upright. Today, modern spade/shovels of many sizes with handles of varying lengths will do the same for you.

6. Mini-Metal Rake Probably yesteryear’s fun starter tool for kids, this antique mini-metal rake is just that, a smaller version of mom’s tried and true metal gardening rake. There’s a new, 12-inch light-duty metal rake in stores now—great for straightening a narrow stretch of earth or teaching children how to garden.

7. Seed Punch Sometimes it’s not so easy to get those teeny, tiny seeds in their separate little holes. With this century-old seed punch, sowing was elementary. One stab created two evenly spaced holes at just

the right depth. The seed punch hasn’t made a comeback just yet, but you can find still vintage versions at yard and church sales.

8. Sickle Another tool that hasn’t changed much in eons is the sickle. It’s ultra useful for trimming a small patch of unruly habitat, and ecological, too, as compared to the somewhat heavy and cumbersome gasolineguzzling weed whacker. Just hold the weeds in one hand and slice with the other.

10. Sprinkler Just like this vintage sprinkler, which spins and shoots water in many directions, today there are sprinklers for any which way you want the water to go. Best thing about a sprinkler is while it’s at work, you can start dinner.

Worth mentioning

9. Sprayer Pump sprayers are all the rage nowadays, especially if you’re making your own natural pesticides. Modern one- to three-gallon sprayers at Agway affi liates and Home Depot don’t need to be fi lled as often as this alluring relic, plus they’ll diffuse any homemade or natural mixture, like cayenne-peppered water, used in fighting garden pests.

The Ametis Shower System by GRAFF lets you bathe in color, using LED chromotherapy lighting. The LEDs are positioned within the shower ring, which offers the choice of waterfall and rain shower settings. This shows the shower in pink lighting.

Luxury systems are changing what it means to get clean By ANNEMARIE SCHUETZ Some days, it’s almost too much just to get out of bed. Some days, your spirit hurts. Take shelter in the bathroom. You can have a shower, or a bath, with all the products you own. And then there are these stunning modern showers. High-end shower design offers a respite from the world. Far from just standing under a showerhead, these are experiences as much as a good skin-deep cleanse.

If you are considering remodeling your bathroom—or just like to fantasize about it—these installations should you give you some ideas on how you could upgrade that experience—with a little help from a local designer, architect or construction fi rm. “The change… toward bathrooms from just a space of function to that of relaxation has shifted the way that the space is made complete; more attention to detail and design is given,” said Céline Marcotte, business development manager for GRAFF. The company has focused recently on showers that are simultaneously aesthetic,

eco-conscious and technologically advanced. Steam showers are a serious trend. Not just good for folks with lung trouble, steam is credited with improving circulation and easing joint pain. It can be moisturizing and invigorating. “Our mission has always been to promote wellness through the benefits of steam and the steam shower experience,” said Mitch Altman, CEO of ThermaSol. The company produces high-end steam showers that are a far cry from traditional sweat lodges. What else is new? “Customization in the shower Continued on page 22

SHOWERING

Hansgrohe, in business since 1901, offers its Axor collection for the discriminating shower enthusiast. “Axor represents the diversity and fascination of individual lifestyles in the bathroom… [it] blends in perfectly in a range of different environments, from modern city apartments to luxury Art Nouveau villas,” per the company. Axor worked with designer Antonio Citterio to create the Citterio E product line, as shown here.

is a significant trend, and one we’re paying a lot of attention to,” saidMarcotte. Designers and the homeowner can work together to create the bathroom of the owner’s dreams. GRAFF offers the M-Series, which allows you to customize your shower area, “pushing the boundaries of design and opening new possibilities in shower functionality.” Other companies are fi nding ways for the end user to become part of the design process. ThermaSol lets you design your own shower online, and showrooms such as RJ Walker in Scranton offer the service too. Shower company WETSTYLE has embraced the needs of the often-forgotten: ADA-compliant design. Their Glacier Collection offers a zero-threshold entry, so a person with walking difficulties can get in and out of the shower without a dangerous fall. “Current trends play into current needs and as our population continues to age, it’s natural for accessibility and hydrotherapy products to converge,” said Mark Wolinsky, president of WETSTYLE. At the same time, WETSTYLE has not lost sight of beauty. Because, don’t we all crave the beautiful? Continued on page 26

GRAFF’s Aqua-Sense introduces the smart shower. Relax, get clean, and listen to “The Lark Ascendingâ€? (or Edvard Grieg or Justin Bieber, whatever makes you happy) on your MP3 player—in the shower. Use a ceiling-mounted showerhead or the body sprays. A touchpad lets you do it all. The Glacier from WETSTYLE is a walk-in shower receptor; installed, it is flush with the floor and thus complies with ADA standards. Even if you don’t need help standing, there’s a lot that appeals. The drain is hidden, and the material is stone-like and slip resistant. The Glacier even comes with a foldaway bench. Plus the entire system looks absolutely gorgeous. Just because you need a wheelchair or a walker doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style.

ThermaSol’s steam showers provide the spa experience in the privacy of your home. Add their essential oils to the showerhead reservoir for a wash of scent. Their Serenity module combines light, color, sound, scent and water for a magical, multi-sensory experience.

Here’s one for the days when you want to soak. Dornbracht’sVaia is described in ways I simply cannot paraphrase: “The ‘5 Ps’–Proportion, Precision, Progressiveness, Personality and Performance–create a sustainable and long-lasting aesthetic appeal… its proportions are balanced, harmonious and precise. Its design is shaped by clear lines and exact transitions.” If you loathe baths, they offer a horizontal shower (not pictured). ” Mock all you want; dozing in a cascade of warm water (face safely out of the way) would compensate for a really bad day.

Securing our community for three generations From landline-routed systems to smartphone security apps By ANDRE TURAN Decades ago, while selling electrical components, Mr. and Mrs. Kaufman (Norman and Phyllis) were asked, “Under what name is this equipment going to be billed? It was at that moment that Norman thought “P” for Phyllis and “N” for Norman. And so began P.N. Fire & Burglar Alarm Company (fondly called PN Alarm), which started in Brooklyn but eventually moved to 31 North St. in Monticello, NY in the early ‘60s. Back then, most Sullivan County homeowners did not lock their doors, so trying to sell them a security system was a bit of a challenge. Jewelry stores, gun shops and auto dealerships were given substantial discounts on their insurance premiums if they had security systems. Norman soon realized his company would be better off focusing on local businesses and hotels rather than the residential market. But when Sullivan Country saw the development of a number of homeowner associations, PN Alarm became involved in the residential market. Business proprietors started installing security systems in their private homes and weekenders accustomed to safekeeping their primary homes in New York City insisted on doing the same with their country getaways. In 1972, Norman’s son, Steven, graduated from college, and he had the opportunity to help further expand PN Alarm. With Steven’s wife, Lois, and mother, Phyllis, in the front office; and Norman, Steven and Norman’s nephew, Steven B, in sales and development, PN Alarm became a leader in the security/fi re alarm industry not only here but in the Hudson Valley. For many years, both Stevens travelled to Orange and Ulster Counties, eventually expanding the business threefold. When Steven’s son, Jared, joined the family business, he not only added high-end music/surround sound systems to the company roster, he also created a design team that specialized in closed-circuit cameras. “A typical homeowner can now view cameras in and around their residence or business from their smartphone. It’s as simple as clicking on an app,” says Jared, adding, “You can also operate your entire security system easily from your smartphone using Internetbased control panels.” Pre-Internet, alarm signals were received through telephone lines. By the early ‘80s, printed circuit boards took over from the traditional relay-operated equipment. The change in technology prompted the Kaufman family to design even broader security and fi re alarm systems. Today, all 37 employees at PN Alarm keep current on cellular technology as it evolves. Aside from securing our homes, the Kaufman Family is actively involved with Sullivan County Community College, where Steven is chairman of the Dormitory Corp. as well as treasurer of the College Foundation. Steven also serves on the foundation board at Catskill Regional Hospital. PN Alarm is family business deeply rooted in the community, three generations long and growing. Discover why over 17 million homeowners trust State Farm®.

Five simple security tips:

1. If you lose your keys, change your locks immediately. 2. Deadbolt locks are the best. Spring latches are easy to pick. 3. Change locks and tumblers when you move into a new house. 4. Lock-up whenever you leave your home even for a short time. 5. Bury a spare key inside a small container rather than hiding it under a doormat or in a mailbox. www.pnalarm.com . (845) 794-6133.
