JERSEY RETIRED ON NOVEMBER 14, 1998 On November 14, 1998, former Troy University women’s basketball player Denise Monroe had her number 30 jersey retired by the school. It remains to this date as the only jersey retired in women’s basketball history. Monroe, a Quitman, Georgia native, came to then-Troy State University in the fall of 1977, where she began four incredible seasons as a member of the women’s basketball program until 1981. Monroe finished as the all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball history, having recorded 2,024 points (17.9 points per game) in just 114 career games; a record which she has held for almost 30 years. She also holds the record for most career field goals with 823. In the record books, Monroe is among the leaders in rebounds (1,311), assists (307), steals (154), free throws (371) and field goal percentage (.520). Her career highlights included being named Second Team All-America her senior year (1980-81). She was also named each season to both the AIAW All-Conference and All-Tournament Teams. In 1980, Monroe was invited for a tryout with the United States Olympic Team. Former Troy head coach Joyce Sorrell (1975-95) “I knew the level of skill that she possessed. Denise was the type of player that would make passes that the men couldn’t make. She was a very confident basketball player, but yet a good team player because she is so modest.”
