South Sands Hotel is Devon's own version of a luxury Caribbean beach style hotel - sublime views, fabulous food, elegant accommodation and perched right on the beach, it's got it all! If you haven't visited Salcombe, then you're missing the best of what the south coast of Devon has to offer. With pale sand and azure water, the estuary where Salcombe lies is breathtakingly beautiful. If you've visited Salcombe previously, you'll know it's an intimate little seaside

town, but many people fail to venture further down the estuary to Bolt Head where South Sands Hotel is situated. This part of the estuary is particularly beautiful and the walk (see following photographic feature) from just outside South Sands Hotel, which then takes you along

the coastal path, is spectacular. It's really great to step out of the hotel and instantly enjoy great walking. Being situated in an intimate cove, the Hotel sits at the top of a lovely sandy beach, and because it's at the furthermost drivable end of the peninsula - with only hotel parking available, you're never fighting crowds. The beach is enclosed on both sides, and in the lee of the prevailing south westerly winds, allowing you to enjoy the sun even when there's a breeze. Salcombe's

estuary is unique for the colour of the seawater - made all the more attractive by the craggy hills running down to the shore, lined with numerous sandy coves and beaches. The hotel itself is delightful, the whole hotel has a spacious, chic New England theme running throughout, the crowning glory being the panoramic bow fronted dining area which affords sublime views across the estuary. In the warmer months you can see how the fan fold doors would open out across the entire

happy to say it didn't. The menu's contemporary British, with the emphasis on quality ingredients, sourcing locally. We're lucky here in Devon, with wonderful producers dotted all over the county. Without going into detail here, I can tell you that the dining experience was truly excellent, with innovative and interesting menu choices and superb food, all beautifully cooked and presented. We've featured more about new chef Allister and in our Food & Drink section. The combination of the Hotel's unique beachfront situation and the many other factors undoubtedly make this is one of Devon's finest beachside hotels.

The room we stayed in was spacious and luxuriously appointed, with sea views. The bed was massive, super comfortable and en-suite facilities excellent, with walk-in shower and roll top bath, all very spacious, clean and stylish. South Sands is dog friendly - Alfie, our Parsons Jack Russell had a great time - the staff seemed to really love dogs. A blanket and bowl was provided in the room, and your dog can accompany you in the lounge. The hotel stock a range of local walk

In terms of South Sands's food offerings, they've recently (4 weeks at the time of my visit) been joined by Chef Allister Bishop, who has taken over the helm. I often ponder the role of the chef, such a weighty burden, you're only ever as good as the last service, each and every plate having to make the grade. Of course, Allister's immensely experienced, with over 27 years at London establishments such as Harrods, you know that the food will not disappoint and I'm
