The Sloping Deck at Dartmouth - a wonderful place to take tea

Flying the flag for Devon You must have noticed the major change on the cover of the magazine. After 5 years of COAST & COUNTRY, we've decided to make a name move to The DEVONSHIRE magazine. It's hasn't been an easy change to make, but there were several important reasons. Firstly, it was amazing how many people we spoke to who'd say Coast & County, Town & Country, County & Country, I think we've heard just about every permutation possible, which told us that a change was due. Secondly, we have by far the biggest glossy magazine coverage for a Devon county magazine with over 1,000 outlets receiving 20,000 magazines each issue. One day in the office, Charlotte, our production manager, spouted 'what about Devonshire magazine' which seemed to fit the bill perfectly, so here we now are proudly bearing the Devonshire name and you may have also noticed we display the Devon flag which came into being in 2003, having been designed by student Ryan Sealey. Incidentally, we are totally open and honest about our magazine coverage - every one of our 1,000 outlets is visible on a freely accessible Google map.

For those interested, we also have a print certificate to verify our circulation. We're also working with a couple of local charities to audit magazine quantities when they're received in store, again to verify quantities. No other magazine within the county goes to these lengths or is as transparent! We're well aware how popular the magazine has become, getting many calls asking where a copy can be picked up because stock disappears so quickly. Our subscription list includes New Zealand as our most distant delivery address which is mind boggling, the post cost per issue is about £7.50 alone! Magazine developments - in the immediate future we're bringing out a North Devon version of the Devonshire magazine. The feedback from businesses to a new North Devon magazine has been highly favourable, we'll keep you posted. This issue sees a visit to the St Marychurch and Babbacombe area, we also investigate staycation breaks with a visit to the famous game fishing hotel, The Arundell Arms at Lifton and also a visit to the historic Bayards Cove Inn at Dartmouth, two outstanding places for a great break. The weather so far this year has been lovely, let's hope it continues to the end of the main holidays. I shall getting out in the kayak, having a few estuaries on my list to navigate. We're just so lucky living in Devon, tourists pay to come here on holiday but we live here - how brilliant is that!

It s no wonder Devon receives so many visitors, who wouldn t want to visit this glorious county, especially in the summer months. On this occasion, we visited the Bayard s Cove Inn for an overnight stay, which is situated conveniently and historically just opposite the place where the Mayﬂower and the Speedwell initially set sail for America (before hitting a storm and ﬁ nally

along the quayside, you can see the Tudor defensive tower that guarded Dartmouth s inner harbour. Bayard s Cove is actually the oldest part of Dartmouth and to my mind, the most unique. Dartmouth really is the sort of place that requires further scrutiny - it s a cheerful, bustling, historic and entertaining place to visit. My stay at the Bayard s Cove Inn was most enjoyable, it has great charm,

Dartmouth has extensive historic, interesting architecture. The museum’s well worth a visit, as is the Sloping Deck Restaurant which is next door, having an ornate ceiling

starter and the paella main, both were excellent, all washed down with a good quality white. Whilst dining, one of the many bands booked here appeared, namely Harri and Tim, who delivered a really smooth, melodious and enjoyable sound. One area where the Bayard s Cove Inn excelled was their staﬃ ng, all really friendly and helpful, contributing to a relaxed, happy atmosphere.

Boat shaped counter with a delightful collection of cakes displayed sailing from Plymouth). Dartmouth is such a historic place, and the Bayard s Cove Inn which is a Tudor merchants house, would have been around a fair old time when the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America in 1620. Actually, the Bayard s Cove Inn was a great ﬁ nd, it s probably the only place you can sit by the peaceful quayside to enjoy unhindered views across to Kingswear and all the way around to Dartmouth Castle. Just

Spanish evening menu made a welcome change the downstairs having an eclectic mix of olde worlde charm combined with cheerful, cosy decor and seating. Really liked the food counter in the shape of a ships hull, and the display of cakes on top was mouth watering their home baked scones are excellent. The menu is a mixture of good quality English fayre, but also sports a Spanish themed restaurant menu in the evening. For dinner, I opted for the stuﬀed sweet red peppers The

Bayard s Cove Inn is at a great location for a stay in Darmouth, convenient for the sea, shops, galleries and coﬀee shops, and it comes highly recommended - Editor.

Well Seasoned Photos Local Devon photographer Ross Hayward is celebrating the start of his 5th year in business with selection into one of the country s most prestigious food photography competitions. Ross, who started Well Seasoned PR & Marketing in July 2010, has submitted one of his images (taken at local restaurant The Jack in the Green ) into the

Observer Food Monthly s 2014 Food Photographer of the Year competition. His business specialises in supporting clients across Devon s hospitality and tourism sectors and his evocative imagery is often seen in newspapers, magazines like ours and on websites across the country. The image entitled Wild Mushroom Soup (pictured) will

compete against 700 other entries for the judge s eye in October. In addition to producing HD videos and a wide range of photography services, Ross also coordinates social media campaigns for several long-standing clients, organises targeted email campaigns to their databases, creates artwork, writes award entries, updates websites and plans advertising campaigns. FEATURED FESTIVAL: Peter Optical, Sidmouth Folk Festival

Sidmouth Folk Festival Diamond Anniversary - 1st to 8th Aug

Sidmouth FolkWeek marks a significant birthday this year: it’s Diamond Anniversary, celebrating 60 years of folk festivals held in the picturesque red cliff-lined East Devon coastal resort. From 1st-8th August, the streets and seafront will bustle with colourful dance displays and buskers; the town’s venues and pubs will packed to the gills with music, dance and song. The event has come a long way since its early years. The first organisers of the festival back in 1955 recognised Sidmouth as “an ideal place for a seaside holiday with dancing.” Les Barclay, a first festival participant (who makes a welcome return in 2014) recalls that “his legs were aching with all the dancing!” 100 dancing fans attended - a far cry from the current Sidmouth FolkWeek that attracts tens of thousands of visitors to the town. In a beautiful completing of the circle, some special dance displays will take place in Connaught Gardens, where the festival started in 1955, as well as there being a rich array of special events across the festival, rounded off by the spectacular finale Torchlight Procession.

Some things never change! Dancing is still at the heart of the current festival, and the spirit of diversity and community which the event prides itself on remains strong. Over the years the festival has evolved, with song, music, storytelling, children’s events, youth sessions, singarounds, workshops, talks and much more, all being added to the bill! This year, the “granddaddy of all folk festivals” offers up a vintage line-up, fitting for its Diamond Anniversary, with old friends and favourites and new, rising stars sharing stages. Major headline concert names, include the likes of Streets of London songwriter Ralph McTell, the mega Oysterband, and the livewire Quebecois Yves Lambert Trio, whose frontman led the blazing La Bottine Souriante who were such a massive hit at the Knowle Arena back in the 1990s. New stars - like Lisa Knapp and the Moulettes - show where the folk tradition is headed next, and encourage cross-generational audiences to share their passion for music.

The Devonshire magazine visits this bustling, historic area on a hot and sunny day

St. Marychurch & Babbacombe St. Marychurch and Babbacombe sit adjacent to Torquay, yet this area is a unique destination in its own right. Sitting at the bottom, western end of Lyme Bay, stunning coastal views on the Babbacombe Downs really do separate it from Torbay. The views are rural and unspoilt, with a green and turquoise ribbon rippling out into the distance. It’s just magic standing behind the railings, looking down to Anstey’s Cove and then letting the eye track around the bay, following the coastline across to East Devon and finally Dorset (on a fine day). Babbacombe and St. Marychurch have many shops, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs - just great for relaxing and people watching. It’s bustling, friendly and interesting, with many independent shops providing all sorts of wares. It’s great to have all these on hand, there really is nothing worse that towns with empty shops, the death knell for communities.

Looking around, instantly you can’t fail to notice the churches, impressive structures revealing the wealth that came to this quiet Devonshire area. The Victorians and the advent of an extensive train network ensured many wealthy Victorians

There are also many fine civic buildings - say what you want about Victorian architecture, it knocks spots of the modern, dead stuff thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s knocked out for the masses. The Victorians really did appreciate detail and certainly didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t skimp on price if it meant having the most impressive turret on their home or town hall. Equally, they appreciated exotic plants and trees, we still enjoy much of their legacy in the mature, exotic trees that grace our recreational areas. This area has seen literally millions of visitors, there must be so many happy memories held by people of holidaying here over the generations, right back to the heyday, when holidaying meant staying in the UK, overseas holiday packages had yet to see the light of day.

A long overdue visit: The Arundell Arms THE EDITOR VISITS ONE OF ENGLANDS OLDEST AND FINEST GAME FISHING HOTELS

If you’re a keen game fisherman, I’m sure that this veritable fishing institution hasn’t escaped your radar. It was in the early 1920s, with the advent of the motor car that the first fishing adverts appeared. Kelly’s Directory said “there is excellent family and tourist accommodation at the Arundell Arms and Devonshire Fishing Hotel”. Since those early days, the Hotel’s reputation as a fine salmon and trout fishing hotel continued over the decades, and it was in 1961 that the Hotel was bought by the family that continue to run it to this day (one of the Hotel’s illustrious former owners was Major Oscar Morris, a keen fisherman who owned the Ambrosia factory at Lifton - of Ambrosia Rice and Custard fame). The current owners, Adam and Tina Fox-Edwards (see photo), follow on in the footsteps of Anne and

Conrad Voss Bark (Anne was previously Fox-Edwards - Gerald passed away in 1973), continuing the traditions that

have ensured the Hotel’s success. Last year, the Hotel was the only business to win more than 2 awards at the 2013 Visit Devon tourism awards, gaining 2 Golds, Silver and a Bronze. There are a great range of activities for the visitor at the Arundell Arms, not just fishing, although it’s well catered for, with 2 full time fishing guides, who

are qualified to teach fly fishing and casting on either the Hotel’s 20 miles of the Tamar and Lyd, Th rushel and Carey rivers or on Tinhay Lake. There’s also clay pigeon shooting, shooting in the winter season (with tuition available), and horse riding, (they can arrange great riding adventure over Dartmoor and also stabling if you wish to bring your steed). Of course, for me, one of the great things about the Arundell Arms is that you can take your dog along - who wants to go on holiday without their best friend, partner excepted of course! If you’re visiting the Arundell Arms for fishing, then there’s sublime Devonshire countryside to enjoy, and the chance to really have your own bit of river for the day. Can there be anything so delightful as wading through sparkling water with the sun

streaming between trees, fl icking a dry fly to a rising trout accompanied by the sounds of the river and birdsong? If you have children, there is a great opportunity here to introduce them to pristine countryside, whilst indulging their need to keep busy and be given a new challenge. Generally these days, pretty much all fish caught are released, and the use of small, barbless hooks means they’re released unharmed. The Arundell Arms have some of the best tuition conveniently on hand. Actually, it seems to me that our river valley are the most forgotten part of our rural landscape. It’s a major oversight how this most beautiful and vibrant habitat is so often overlooked and unexplored, particularly by the younger generation. Some of our most spectacular flora and fauna can be seen along the river bank, although for me,

the wily native brown trout is the most beautiful and entertaining species by far. It’s long been understood that fi shermen are the guardians of our rivers, quickly spotting river pollution, with many actively involved with river habitat conservation - we really do need to encourage the younger generation to take up the noble art of fly fishing as this interest helps to protect our river habitats for the future. My visit to the delightful Arundell Arms towards the end of May was the culmination of a lifelong fishing interest. Spanning back over some 40 years and being a fan of Trout and Salmon magazine, I’d frequently seen adverts for the Hotel and was aware of massive involvement by Anne Voss Bark in migratory fish conservation issues, Anne being one of the founding members of the Westcountry Rivers Trust. Our stay at the Arundell Arms was relaxing having a genuinely friendly atmosphere, with a cheerful bar, elegant dining room and cosy lounge. There’s a lovely courtyard at the rear of the Hotel where you can sit and enjoy your coffee by the fountain. Of course, many establishments these days are under pressure to present food to a very high standard and the Arundell doesn’t disappoint. You know how it is if you book into a hotel for a stay and fi nd the food’s lacking, but no problems here thankfully. You really

After sampling the tasting menu, I can happily say that the food is excellent and can wholeheartedly recommend it. As mentioned previously, the Hotel’s dining room is an elegant place to be, making for a totally enjoyable evening. I was sad to leave the Hotel, not having fished the rivers due to torrential rain, but will diary in for a visit later in the year, perhaps to try for their late-season salmon that run in September and October. Incidently, Lifton’s a great base for exploring the surrounding countryside. If you haven’t visited Lydford Gorge, you’ve missed a treat, it’s spectacular and well worth the trip out. We had a most enjoyable and relaxing stay. I’d like to thanks Adam, Tina and team for making us welcome. Ed

The Devilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cauldron Lydford Gorge

Lydford Gorge is one of those astonishingly beautiful places that indelibly etch themselves into your memory. The day we visited was crowned with glorious sunshine, captured in the golden river bed of the Lyd and the undergrowth of ferns and moss which glowed in a multitudinous palette of greens. This combination, amidst gushing-gurgling water and high humidity, provided a visual and sensory panoply. Topping it off, cream tea at the finish of the walk to the usual high standard that the National Trust is famous for, created a unique day to cherish. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t help ponder the steps alongside the gorge, which would have been a major undertaking, the sort of project perhaps some enterprising Victorian landowner would have undertaken for the amusement of visitors to the estate?

Lydford Castle

Infamous Outlaws

Set on a hillock, this austere building dominates the local countryside. It was never a true castle, it served as a prison and courthouse for pretty much all of its occupied life. Courts were held to oversee the laws of the royal forests of Dartmoor. Back in the 13th century, when the major building work was done, you can imagine just how remote this outpost was. The tower continued to be used as a prison and courtroom until the early eighteen hundreds, when the courts moved to Princetown, which became the new capital of Dartmoor.

Lydford Gorge was infamous in the 17th century for being the hide out of the Gubbins, a group of outlaws who terrorised the area, stealing sheep from many Dartmoor farms. Led by Roger Rowle, they were the scourge of the area, particularly for unsuspecting travellers. Roger Rowle was said also to have been regarded as the ‘Robin Hood of Dartmoor’, I suppose there were two sides to the story as always. What happened to the clan is not know, supposition by Baring Gould is as follows:

“It cannot be said that the race is altogether extinct. The magistrates have had much trouble with certain people living in hovels on the outskirts of the moor, who subsist in the same manner. They carry off lambs and young horses before they are marked, and when it is difficult, not to say impossible, for the owners to identify them. Their own eves always have doubles” - Baring Gould

Lydford Castle was notorious for rough justice and was described in a 1640s poem:

“I oft have heard of Lydford laws, How in the morn they hang and draw, And sit in judgement after” The prison dungeon was described by Richard Strode in 1510, an MP who’d been imprisoned there, as:

The Walk The walk down to the Devil’s Cauldron is fairly straightforward, although i’d say that if you have really young children it’s not suitable (more capable children will love the adventure, and there are rails and safety wires to help along the way). If you carry on upstream from the Cauldron, the walk ultimately leads to a dead-end, but the scenery is truly lovely and not to be missed. The river Lyd, further downstream on the Arundell Arms Hotel waters. They have over 20 miles of fishing on the Lyd, Tamar, Thrushel and Carey.

The borders of Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Somerset are no barrier to dialect and you may well find similar words in all of these counties and sometimes you will hear people say that a particular word is Devonian and not Cornish, or belongs to Dorset or Somerset etc. I prefer to say that a lot of the words belong to the West Country.

Magic Carpet Ride Devon based interior designer Susan Folwell of Artisans and Artists talks about the magic of carpets, beautiful buildings and tea. Choosing Carpets My mother taught me an early lesson in how to choose and buy the very best carpets. "Always take your time, look carefully and do not rush. Never buy the first one that you see unless you still love it when you have seen them all, look carefully and you will soon be able to tell the good from the bad.", she would say as we sat down to review a number of carpets. In turn, each one was placed before us and their story told, the symbolic meaning of the designs, the essence of the dyes, the type of silk or wool and the weaving process. Choosing carpets involved drinking small glasses of tea, in Malaysia this was oolong tea (a rolled and dried green tea). I would discover later in life that beautiful scenery and buildings, buying carpets and drinking tea seemed to go hand in hand around the world. Carpet sizes were considered, colours contemplated and quality was checked. Once a carpet was decided upon, a process of bartering was customary. "Only barter for things that you really want, barter firmly but fairly", my mother would say. The chosen carpet would be carefully rolled and a cover hand-sewn around it before it was placed in (or on the roof of) the taxi for the ride home where the carpet would be laid out in the allotted space and it was always perfect. The foundation was laid for my work later in life as an interior designer.

The Start of my Passion My love affair with carpets started very early in life and has never waned. As a child I lived in the Far East with my parents in the 1960/70s, my mother was a keen collector of beautiful furnishings, especially oriental carpets. Each expedition to purchase a new carpet was carefully planned and precisely carried out and the rituals involved in the exercise always impressed me. Measurements were taken of the space in question and these were noted down in my mother's notebook prior to our journey into Kuala Lumpur to a favoured carpet dealer (my mother was loyal in her purchasing and was rewarded with some excellent pieces) or, when in Singapore, to Mr

C K Tang's eponymous store in Orchard Road. Whizzing along in a large taxi we saw intricate wooden houses and temples, as well as ornate architectural statements such as the Kuala Lumpur railway station or Mr Tang's store modelled after the Imperial Palace of the Forbidden City in Beijing.

A well chosen carpet has the ability to make a room, pulling it all together somehow and creating an atmosphere that is exotic, magical, serene, welcoming and relaxing all at the same time. It can be as simple as a cowhide on bare floorboards, a tribal weave kilim with stories to tell, an exotic Ziegler, or a modern sculptural creation that shimmers beneath your feet. Over the years I have purchased many carpets for myself and many more for clients. I have applied the principles that my mother taught me all those years ago and carpet buying is always an adventure.

Woven on traditional portable looms these carpets are narrow due to the nature of the looms, but when expertly hand-sewn together the resulting look is bohemian and luxurious. Seeking directions in the Middle Atlas in search of a Berber carpet weaving village

Tribal Weaves and Mint Tea The tribal weaves of Morocco have always been fascinating. Mostly woven by women, these carpets feature distinct motifs (mainly relating to fertility) and weaving techniques vary from tribe to tribe. The Beni Ourain tribe of the remote Middle Atlas weave a striking, large, archaic looking whiteground pile carpet. A group of women

from the tribe will work the carpet in shifts and have free reign as artists for each carpet. The wool is from local sheep (one or two sheep can usually be found wandering in the house). When weaving a large carpet the woven part is rolled up and for reasons of superstition the weavers cannot unroll the woven part of the carpet until the entire carpet is completed. carpets. Yet again beautiful buildings have been a part of the journey. The astonishing Berber village houses of the Atlas (almost invisible to the eye for purposes of defence) and the intricate detail and pleasing symmetry of Islamic architecture never fails to amaze me. Of course, lots of mint is tea involved when carefully choosing Moroccan carpets.

Muted Elegance with Afghan Zeigler The Afghan Ziegler is a firm favourite of mine. The name is taken from the Anglo-Swiss trading company that operated weaving workshops in Sultanabad in the late 1800s, supplying Liberty & Company and Harvey Nichols. Auction prices of antique Ziegler rugs can be very high, mainly due to the fact that the mass production of the late 1800s produced rugs that did not measure up to the finer quality of the traditional Persian carpet, hence finding an antique Ziegler in good condition is rare. I have been buying modern Ziegler carpets for many years from an Afghan family of long established carpet weavers and traders. These rugs are of exceptional quality and produced using traditional methods. Large area rugs are their speciality and I have placed these carpets to great effect in private libraries, drawing rooms and sitting rooms. In keeping with the Ziegler tradition these rugs

have evolved to follow the trends of interior design and today the carpets display soft colours, subtlety and muted elegance. Once woven, the carpets are carefully washed, the resulting aged but soft and glossy patina means that you can buy a new rug that already has that comfortable lived-in look.
