Editor’s Letter A warm welcome to the Spring edition of the Sidmouth Diary. After a very wet and windy few months, hopefully the fine weather is on its way at last. The grey days are consigned to memory for another year, with the longer days finally arriving. In this issue, we visit Kennaway House in our latest Sidmouth Community Interview. The trustees and supporters of Kennaway do a great job, helping to provide and maintain an extremely important facility for the local community. In another of our NEW features, we meet Cathy Osbond from the East Devon Art Academy. To find

out more go to page 24. Incidentally, if you’d like your organisation featured, get in touch! Get fit and earn money! We are on the lookout for distributors to help us deliver the Diary magazines to houses and businesses across the Sid Valley and Lower Otter Valley. If you are interested or know anyone who might be, then give us a call. J. Ingles Readers - All correspondence to: jingles@budleighdiary.co.uk

Local historian Ted Gosling looks back in time The 1960 East Devon Floods by Ted Gosling

T

he worst disaster in living memory to hit East Devon came at about 3 o’clock in the morning of 1st October 1960.

When three inches of rain cascaded down, within minutes the centuries-old village of Axmouth was lying right in the River Axe, the ancient town of Colyton bordered by the River Coly and the tiny village of Whitford were swimming in water. Police Sergeant Donald Cowling received an S.O.S call at 3.30 am and together with P C George Rodd. He drove to Axmouth to find the main road had disappeared under water. More than forty houses in the village took the full brunt of the water leaving them after the flood with inches of black slimy mud covering the floors and furniture. At Colyton the flooded river swamped low-lying houses and torrents of water came down from the hills which ripped up roads and turned the bottom of the town into a lake. The village of

Milk deliveries disrupted by the floods in Axmouth

Whitford also suffered when the River Axe rose and sheets of water ran off soaked fields. In Axmouth, teenagers toured the village, helping those for whom the troubles had been too much. In Exmouth, the floods followed an unusually wet summer and the last week in September 1960 was one of almost continuous rain and the exceptional down pour flooded the Withycombe Brook, resulting in severe flooding in the Exeter Road, Exmouth. Muddy water up to four feet deep poured into houses causing much damage to furniture and carpets. Exmouth council workmen, policemen and firemen waded in water that was waist high. During the following days, help came from the Royal Marines at Lympstone, the Wessex brigade from Exeter and the Durhams, who were stationed in Honiton. On Saturday 10th October the parliamentary secretary to the minister of housing, Sir Keith

Local historian Ted Gosling looks back in time

The floods causing disruption in Exmouth

Joseph and Lord Roborough, the Lord Lieutenant of Devon toured the area and were appalled at what the saw. Lympstone also suffered when the area around the power station was badly flooded. At the same time, Sidmouth received 2.75 inches of rain within 12 hours and the catchment areas of river became saturated. A Honiton steam laundry van and a Morris Minor car was seen floating down the river by Mise Street bridge. Other parts of Devon also suffered and the floods did much damage to Devon’s railway system.

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life

Beware of the Toast by Cec Hardy Retirement should mean never having to get up before dawn. I try my best to stick to this rule but occasionally it’s necessary to let an electrician, plumber or builder in. Dawn is anyway a bit of a moveable feast. In winter it sometimes doesn’t seem to come until midday if at all, whereas in summer it can be a right pain, setting the seagulls off at 3am. Not that I ever see the sunrise nowadays. Even in my younger days I usually only witnessed it on my way home. What’s this to do with toast? Well I reckon that among the multilingual warnings you sometimes get in instruction booklets these days, such as not eating the flex or operating electrical equipment underwater, those accompanying new toasters should include the perils of attempting to make toast before dawn.

Our last visit from a zealous and early rising workman left me with a swollen nose, cut lip and a very clean, though bruised, eye. We had just purchased a new high speed toaster but it wasn’t quite what I’d expected. It took ages to toast the bread but I must confess it was delivered from the slot at high velocity, which is how I came to bruise my nose from a direct hit while leaning over it to check if it was actually working. Once I’d retrieved the slice and settled down to consume it I stabbed myself with a sharp edge which somehow managed to hit my upper lip instead of my open mouth. The blood stained toast was a little soggy but by this time I was past caring. It was not until I had brushed my right eye instead of my few remaining teeth that I realised I had forgotten to put my glasses on. If only some clever inventor could somehow fit an electrical toothbrush with a molar seeking device it would be a great service to mankind. I consider so many inventions these days to be unnecessary. I did quite a bit of running in my ‘youth’. It began with a New Years Eve drunken wager about running the London marathon. January 2nd found me still hungover and frozen in shorts, T- shirt and gym shoes. I did eventually buy a proper pair of running shoes but browsing through a running magazine recently I discovered

what is recommended for the aspiring modern day jogger. This includes sweat proof headphones, recommended tracks for jogging to, various breathable sweat reducing tight fitting tights, heart monitor and pulse checker. Don’t know how I survived without all those. Wife Christine is rather more into technology. Naturally she has a mobile phone but rarely uses it. She was somewhat embarrassed recently when it sounded during a particularly intense moment in tai chi class, as we were practising what I call ‘Dragon twirls round too fast and burns own tail’. Luckily her ring tone is of angelic harps rather than heavy metal but she was lucky not to be excluded from future sessions or stripped of her belt. Though, come to think of it we haven’t actually received any belts after more than two years of dedicated practice. It may be beneficial mentally and physically but I’d welcome a more tangible reward. Chris has recently taken up photography in a big way. She rarely does things any other way. Our walks are now even slower than before since everything now has to be perfect unlike the quick snaps of yesteryear. She spends many a happy hour fiddling with her pixels and disproving the old adage about the camera never lying: I have on one occasion found my head on someone else’s body and vice versa. She’s even continued on page 21

The

In the heart of Sidmouth town centre, Kennaway House, built in 1805 as Fort House, is a Grade II* listed mansion. In 1906 it was restored and re-named Church House. In 1999 a survey revealed massive repairs, costed at £1 million, were needed. Public outcry prevented plans to sell the site and new trustees of the registered charity, Kennaway House Trust, raised this amount. Since its re-opening in 2009, Kennaway House forms part of Sidmouth’s architectural heritage and has a range of rooms available for hire for social, cultural, business and community events. Its upgraded super-fast Broadband offers good WiFi connection throughout the building. COMMUNITY LEARNING Community use is the most important aspect of the Trust s remit, and private tutors run a wide range of courses, from art and photography to Tai Chi and Zumba. There are language

Local artwork will now be selected for display on Kennaway s walls between exhibitions, with artists paying a percentage of any sales to the Trust. Famous speakers include Julian Fellowes, Deborah Moggach, Joan Bakewell, Mary Berry, Fay Weldon and Kate Mosse. The new season was launched in February by TV Detective crime writer Simon Hall. HISTORY TALKS Ffiona Eaves organises spring and autumn talks on Devon s history and archaeology, aimed at keeping up to date with new ideas and discoveries by bringing in specialist speakers. Afternoon talks between March and June link travel and history, with subjects ranging from Athens to the mosaics of Ravenna, chateaux of the Loire Valley, and city churches of London. Ffiona is joined by Sarah Obermuller-Bennett. KENNAWAY JAZZ CLUB Kennaway House has hosted Sunday afternoon Jazz for the past four years. This year, pianist Craig Milverton introduces talented musicians from across the country to play on Sundays and some evenings. Held in the Cellar Bar, which has a licensed bar, future gigs include an Ella Fitzgerald tribute with singer Maggie Reeday on Friday April 4 from 6.30pm.

WEDDINGS, PARTIES Kennaway House is licensed for weddings and civil partnerships and regulated entertainment in its Cellar Bar, and is a popular venue for wedding receptions and discos as it allows flexibility with different rooms to choose from. The ground floor rooms are ideal for formal lunches and dinners for 20 to 60 guests. For more informal occasions the Cellar Bar is an ideal venue for up to 100. The house, close to the parish church, is also suitable for funeral wakes. Income from private functions helps subsidise its community use. BUSINESS LINKS More organisations and businesses are holding conferences and training days in various sized rooms at Kennaway House and this additional use helps to fund the building s upkeep. What makes Sidmouth a really great place to live in is the community spirit which still survives in force, even in this 21st century. There’s such a myriad of organisations across the Sid Valley community, busy with all sorts of activities from recreation to charitable. - Editor.

MANAGING your MONEY Retirement Options What's the Cost?

A

ccording to a recent report from the Financial Ser vices Consumer Panel, the Retail Distribution Review (known as RDR) has triggered a “massive shift“ to nonadvised sales for those reaching retirement age who take out an annuity. Simply put, consumers have decided to save money, go to a website buy their annuity on-line without advice and take out a DIY solution. This ought to be straightforward except for the fact that things aren`t always how they seem.

One of the report's biggest criticisms was that consumers who buy from a website without advice are left to deal with opaque commission charging structures and it was found that DIY annuities sometimes have commissions payable of up to 6%*. It is possible that some consumers might not be aware of this commission although I understand that the amount should be detailed on their annuity illustration. Consumers APR to JUN 14

Helen has been advising clients in the East Devon area for the past 22 years and specialises in the provision of retirement and investment advice. Her firm also provides a specialist annuities service for people approaching retirement and newly retired which operates nationally.

may also be left unaware of the lack of regulatory protection because they don’t read through the small print which points out that they will not be receiving advice and even if they do it was found that they may not even understand the ramifications of this. The report notes that, generally, there are concerns

"consumers who buy from a website without advice are left to deal with opaque commission charging structures"

To find out more about her practice, you can view her company website at: www.richmondindependent.co.uk

about outcomes for consumers which tend to be patchy and also the lack of transparency on charges which leaves consumers in the dark. Interestingly, RDR has been lauded as a way to increase transparency on charges but in this case it has simply muddied the waters. Paradoxically, the commission paid for a nonadvised DIY annuity sale (up to 6% for an enhanced annuity) may be significantly higher than an adviser's fee.

Sidmouth People My Story - Cathy Osbond

We moved to Sidmouth in 1999 Catherine Osbond moved to Devon over 14 years ago. Having holidayed in Devon most her life she felt it was time to move there permanently, together with her husband and four young children (young at the time). It was a chaotic move as their relatively large family had to be split between two relatives for a while, as their house was not ready to move into immediately. The relatives did not know what had hit them, with houses full of children, family paraphernalia and pets, including a house rabbit who regularly gave the wiring a bit of a trim! “With the four children all attending different schools, The school run was a mammoth undertaking, and looking back, I wonder how we actually managed it! Still it was all worth it and we have all loved our seaside home from the start.” Cathy and her family enjoy the sea air, the easy going way of life and the fact that even strangers say ‘Hello’ as they pass in the street. APR to JUN 14

The

SIDMOUTH DIARY

“We love that so many people know each other and are helpful and considerate. There is a real community feel, not just with individuals, but also the lovely craft based shops and food markets that make Sidmouth such a thriving community based town.”

“A real community based town” “The shops in Sidmouth always have such wonderful individual gifts. After travelling to Exeter to do my Christmas shopping in the first two years we lived here, I realised that home is where the heart is and now do all my shopping locally.” Cathy taught at a Devon school until five years ago, when she left to start East Devon Art Academy. The Sidmouth based art school is now a thriving community based haven for art lovers from near and afar. As well as art tuition, the school provides gallery space for local artists which Cathy tells me, attracts visitors from all over the country! - J. Ingles 24

is, I don't care. It's actually just nice to be in my favourite place in the universe, warm in the knowledge that for the next ten minutes I'm in paradise with my very own barberella!

EARNING A LIVING

HAIRDRESSERS I suppose it's a male thing, but I'm in love with my hairdresser. She has the most beautiful blonde flowing locks and I wonder who does hers, as I have heard that hairdressers never do their own hair. Maybe it`s just me, but whenever I walk past her shop the men in there all seem to be about my age and they have their best clothes on too, perhaps I'm not alone in my ardour. With me though, I love the whole hair experience, not just a quick trim and slap on the wax. The million dollar smile as you enter the shop, for instance, is essential to maintain interest, as you might be in a queue and personal ecstasy is two number ones away. Still I get more for my money this way as I can watch the mistress of follicle pleasure go about the business of trying to make old bill down the road look like James Dean. Then suddenly its my turn and I slide into her soft leather chair that I never want to get out of. My hair is stroked and I am asked what I want done to me; the real answer of course as I wear a hat most of the time

Yarns from the inimitable FCR Esgen

Most people were young once, me included, and although it was more years ago than I care to remember I recall one incident when I was around nine years old that will stay with me as long as I breath! It all began one Saturday morning somewhere in springtime when I was summoned into my fathers study and asked what my agenda was for the day. I replied quite truthfully that I was going to curl up in front of the TV and watch some Robinson Crusoe repeats. “No your not my boy,” was my fathers curt reply, “It's time you earned your own living.” I imagined at that moment having to find my own house, and trade in my push bike for a second hand ford prefect. My father though was not a harsh man, but having being dragged up in a London slum in the 1920s he was only too aware of the harsh realities of life and wanted his son to be ready for the big world outside. My father was also not a man one argued with, so I was duly packed off for the day and told to go and find work, buy my

own lunch out of the proceeds, and come back in the evening where a hot meal would be waiting. So there I was, the original job seeker forty years before the phrase became unfashionable, with not a clue what to do next and no job centre computer to turn to for job ads. One thing was certain though, I wasn’t going to starve, and come what may I was going to earn my lunch money. I suppose I must have been a comical sight walking down our long gravel drive in my brown shorts and black, leather boots searching for my first million, but I was determined to be like that Rockefeller chap my father always went on about at dinner parties. I turned the corner at the bottom of the drive and knocked on the door of the first house in the main street, which was named interestingly Fort Knox. The lady of the house answered and gave my a job gardening at the enormous sum of two shillings an hour, which to the uninitiated works out today at precisely 10p an hour. I had six shillings at the end of the morning and pootled down to Mr Colmans' chip shop for lunch. I ordered cod and chips and a can of Tizer with the big burly men from the local coal yard taking the mickey a bit as I was too small to look over the counter, but I didn’t care a fig as my meal only came to four and six and I was well in credit on the day already! Nostalgic happenings on the farm

The Old Vet’nary by Ken Watson

Characters Back in the 60’s and 70’s, Plymouth, there lived a lady of such eccentricity that if she featured in a work of fiction you might think the author’s imagination had carried him away. When I knew her she was no spring chicken but I think in her heyday she was attractive, otherwise why would her husband, a very wealthy man, have married her, for she gave him a barrel of trouble. Her passion was rescuing stray dogs. She had immense energy and spent days and nights scouring the streets and often rescued dogs before they were lost, so to speak and would often demand that I took in one of her strays at one in the morning. Yet no disreputable bag lady was she, but attended fashionable events where she would bend everyone’s ear to her cause. It was said that more than once, after such an outing she would return to her mansion on The Hoe to find that her husband had locked her out, when she would just bed down on her doorstep for the rest of the night. I can testify that one day my wife and I were in town for some shopping. We were about to cross the road when this lady grabbed my arm and demanded to discuss stray dogs. I politely pointed out that it was my day off but she would have non of it. So we crossed the road, my wife pulling one arm while my nemesis hung on to the other. Any male observing this must have thought, ‘‘What’s he got that I haven’t?’’. In the Stoke area of Plymouth the wife of a medical consultant ruled

her household with a rod of iron. Her forceful nature was matched by her perversity as she controlled her menagerie of people and even more animals. She ruled from the large basement of a four story Victorian house which she left only for a foray to the nearby shops. Perversity should have been for, although we had a good working relationship, whatever I suggested she took the opposite view. For example, if I opined that a dog should have an operation she would invariably challenge me and oppose my view. I soon learnt how to deal with her. I would decide my favourite procedure then suggest the opposite. A kindhearted woman, always dressed in severe black, she will remain forever in my memory.

him. Yet, as their fortunes waned, and they down sized from house to house they never stinted on their pets’ care or in paying my bill. He was a man of such probity that when, in view of his financial circumstances, I suggested I waive my fee he was affronted. ‘No Mr. Watson, you must earn your living and I must earn mine’. I remember visiting a greengrocer’s business which was so incompetently run, such a shambles, that it would have been laughable if not so tragic. Once I visited them in a garret, literally under the eaves, where conversation was accompanied by the plop of water in bowls placed judiciously under the leaking roof, and when I asked for water to wash he triumphantly produced a half full bowl of roof water.

I first met the Lewis-Browns in Plymouth in the 60’s. Great shoe shopping in Sidmouth

Yet the penny did not drop with them despite my repeated suggestions they give up the habit. Then one day I arrived to a solemn reception. ‘‘Sit down Mr Watson,’’ said Mrs Lewis-Brown, ‘‘We must discuss why our pets keep dying’’. I looked at them aghast. I did not know what to say. ‘‘Why it’s your smoking of course,’’ I blurted out. The reaction exceeded anything I could have ever imagined. They obviously never realised. It was painful to see these honest people beat their breasts in self-reproach and I believe it shortened their lives. They both died before my retirement. You will never guess the cause. K.Watson
