What a truly great summer we've had this year! I'm sure you'll agree that it's been outstanding, day after day of sunshine - there really was no need to travel abroad for a dose of sunshine. It's great to nip into town when the weather's good for a spot of shopping and perhaps lunch afterwards. Across the region's towns there have been many changes, some shops closing, others opening, hopefully though, the net effect is that our towns remain vibrant places, with interesting shops, great restaurants and pubs. Of course, we can all help by making a conscious effort to buy locally where possible. The money we spend circulates through the community, so ultimately we all benefit and the towns continue to thrive. To this end, we've launched a SHOP LOCAL campaign, a scheme we've devised to gently remind residents that it really helps their local community if they support their town through spending locally. Just a simple concept, but with the threat of the internet and large retail

There is no getting away from the fact that legal But Mediation is quicker than a Court process. In representation can be very expensive. The “going Solicitor ianwalker@familylawandmediation.co.uk Mediator the above mediation cases we found a solution rate” for advice from an experienced Family Law www.familylawandmediation.co.uk & Director to all outstanding issues in two and three joint Solicitor in Exeter is in excess of £200 plus VAT per of Family Prioryfield House, 20 Canon Street, Taunton, Somerset, TA1 1SW hour. Although I currently charge £150 plus VAT meetings. All four of my clients were very pleased Law and Expert Mediation by appointment the outcomes and these were completed for a per hour, costs can still accumulate quickly. My Mediationadvice orwith Free parking fraction of the costs they had already incurred, and charges for mediation are based on £80 plus VAT for a fraction of their likely costs should be cases per person per hour. The maths are simple. A have proceeded to Court. successful mediation can be completed in a fraction of the time and cost of contested court proceedings.

What is Mediation?

Successful Mediations

In the last of months I have successfully mediated a couple of cases where the answer to this was starkly illustrated. In the first case, the couple had instructed solicitors from London and the South East. The couple had assets of several million pounds, including a number of properties and other investments. In less than 12 months they had between them accumulated legal costs exceeding £20,000. In the second case, the couple had significantly less resources, but in a period of six years since separating they had accumulated between them legal costs of in excess of £25,000. No financial agreement had been reached in either case. No applications had been made to the Court asking for a Financial Orders either. There had been a lot of letters written. Financial documents had been exchanged and in one case there had been a meeting between each client with their Solicitors; but no agreement. As a solicitor, my philosophy is always to explore whether a case can be resolved quickly and amicably. If this is not possible then an application should be made to the Court. Negotiations can continue, but if there is no agreement, the Court will make a decision. I seek to avoid drift. When the final

Mediation is a process of negotiation. An independent mediator will assist the participants to undertake confidential negotiations. The mediator will ensure that the negotiations are focused and will assist the couple to make informed decisions.

“my philosophy is always to explore whether a case can be resolved quickly and amicably”

The advantage of a Solicitor Mediator

Or possibly free

If one person is eligible for legal aid for mediation, then for them, the mediation will be FREE as their costs will be paid by the Legal Aid Agency. The legal aid scheme for mediation is being extended in autumn 2014 so that when one of the couple is eligible for legal aid, the Legal Aid Agency will pay for the other to have a free joint mediation meeting as well.

Planning for success

As a Solicitor Mediator I am able to assist my clients by ensuring that they understand how the relevant law affects their situation and their options (as a mediator I can give information but not advice). It is easy for me to identify when legal advice is required by either or both to enable them to make informed decisions. I am able to frame questions for my clients so that they take advice in a more focused way. My clients also have confidence that I have been practising as a specialist in family law solicitor for more than 22 years (I have been a family mediator for a mere 18 years) and therefore I use my experience to assist my mediation clients to achieve a fair outcome to their negotiations.

I always meet with each of the couple separately before we arrange a joint meeting. I do this in order to get to know each of the couple and to understand what the issues are. I also do this so that I can form a good view as to whether mediation is viable and to consider how mediation can be set up to maximise the prospects of success. If I do not think that there is a realistic prospect of getting somewhere then we will not start. Sometimes people can be sceptical about whether mediation can help. Having an initial discussion means that both can find out more at minimal cost. A good starting point to finding a solution to a problem is both of the couple being willing to come in and meet me for a chat. Also, both recognising that there is a problem that needs to be solved and both realising that things cannot go on as they are.

SOS - LDM into the breach! I’m always amazed what people get up to, recently chatting with Laurence Mitchell at LDM, I discovered he’d shipped his whole team over to Swansea to work with the BBC1 DIY SOS programme, donating a custom built Garden Room at the 11th hour. Laurence said “they’re a wonderful family, having more problems than most, the garden room will enable them to relax and enjoy

the freedom and space that it’ll provide”. Their son, Jack (age 14) had never been in his garden, nor his front door, due to his deteriorating disabilities. “Sometimes in this world we live in, giving up your time and money for others is so personally rewarding and great for the soul. Whilst together choosing plants for the garden, even Mr Nick Knowles himself put his hand in his pocket, which was humbling to see - it’s

Celebrating 15 years - The Salty Monk at Sidmouth Proprietors of the Salty Monk, Annette and Andy Withridge have experienced many trials and tribulations during the past 15 years they’ve run the business. The highs include winning Best B&B in England 2008/9 (and runners up 2012/13), and the lows being flooded in November 2012, when the river Sid burst its banks, taking until January before the business was ready to open again. They’ve expanded the business over the

years in all areas with the addition of a spa, gym and treatment rooms, all new en suite rooms, new kitchens and restaurant.

Community Spirit in bucket loads! Since we launched the SHOP LOCAL scheme in mid September, the Devonshire magazine team have been bowled over by the uptake from businesses across the region. truly a great show.” Laurence was honoured to have been given a rare signed T-shirt by the DIY SOS team, which he will be donating in the coming months, to raise money for ‘Southbrook School’ in Exeter. Laurence’s most current project is working with a Devon based developer on an exciting project for both UK and abroad, designing kit form garden houses which will be harmoniously designed and built by LDM to be disabled access friendly. If you read our previous Special Project in the Home & Interiors section, you can see examples of Laurence’s work. It’s reassuring to know there are businesses locally, that not only produce excellent work, but also have a great heart! Editor

Following the floods in 2012, they decided to restructure the business, opening a brasserie for light bites, which compliments their existing Garden Room Restaurant. The Witheridges are proud supporters of everything local, from the farms where they source foods, to staff, suppliers and the artists work they exhibit and sell within the establishment. Passionate about cooking everything from scratch on the premises, preserving, curing and smoking their own food. Helen says “retirement planning is becoming increasingly complex and the new regulations on pension liberation may well affect care costs”. Charity helps out with audit Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous publishing companies out there, claiming all sorts of circulation figures for their magazines. To this end, staff at the Devonshire magazine decided a magazine count was in order, so the Sidmouth Blind Club was called in to independently verify our print figures. Mary verified 10,200 magazines for the Exeter, East and Mid Devon issue, with Amy from the Mare & Foal Sanctuary at Totnes verifying 10,000 for our South and West issue which are stored at Newton Abbot, making 20,200 magazines in total. Donations were made to each charity involved in the audit. Incidentally, we also have a print certificate from the company

Chapter’s annual charity Fashion Show now in its 9th year A popular annual event that’s become a must-attend for local fashionistas is Chapter’s Fashion Show. It started after Yvonne (proprietor of Chapter, pictured right) met Tricia Heard during the first few months of trading, who had just moved to Sidmouth and was heavily involved with charity work for Children’s Hospice South West. Tricia, asked Yvonne if she would consider arranging a fashion show in her home, this subsequently came about, catering for 30 guests and friends, modelling clothes from Chapter’s range. It was such a great success and at that time no one else was raising money for charity in this way. After that first show, Tricia became the Chair for Macmillan Cancer Support in Sidmouth. For the

As Store Director (Trevor Boobyer pictured above), my role is to ensure that all departments are a destination, well worth a visit and to ensure a warm welcome. Situated in Newton Abbot, right on the pedestrianised centre, our store has the following departments: Fashion store, Home Store , Furniture Store, Toy Store and Menswear Store, both of the latter now being refurbished to give a complete modern shopping experience, with courtesy a smile and a welcome.

Apparently, Tricia has since moved on to be the South West Area Chair for Macmillan and Diane Herbert is now the Sidmouth Chair in Tricia’s place. I asked Yvonne how she felt about the funds they’d raised so far: “I’m very proud of the money Chapter has raised for Macmillan over the years and the fact this has become an annual event that everyone looks forward to!” next few years they continued using Tricia’s home, but increased ticket sales to 50. Yvonne commented: “we wanted to raise more money for

‘Beyond the terminus of memory’ A major solo show at Marine House Saturday 1 November to Friday 14 November Charlie O’Sullivan is firmly established as one of Britain’s leading contemporary artists with an international following. This show of 30 new works simply reinforces the evolution of her style and the depth of her imagination. The title she has chosen is “Beyond the Terminus of Memory”. “In his 1949 book, Beyond the Terminus of Stars,

the East End poet Hugo Manning asks, ‘In the oceans wastes, is the albatross alone happy?’ For him, I believe the answer lay between rumour and reality, truth and fiction, that place best occupied by storytelling. The point where memory overlaps with imagination forms an inspirational and creative frontier. This is the departure point for the body of over thirty

new works I have painted for this show. “Beyond the Terminus of Memory”, inspired by Manning’s title, seemed to fit what this group of paintings tries to achieve. My painting continues to explore new ways of working and new materials. My visual interpretation of the narrative or story line is the fundamental underpinning to my compositions.”

Painting at Topsham

The Lighter Side

Well-known Devon artist Ray Balkwill shares his joys of painting in the ‘great outdoors.’

H

eat, wind, rain, snow ‒ ah, the joys of painting in the ‘great outdoors’ - one never knows quite what Mother Nature has in store for the dedicated artist. For well over two decades now I have been a strong advocate of painting en plein air, my main objective being to capture the mood and ‘spirit’ of a place. In that time I have also tutored scores of painting holidays both in the UK, as well as abroad. This has not only provided me with some truly memorable painting experiences, but also some amusing stories. But before I recount some of these, there are a couple of misconceptions about painting that need to be clarified. The fi rst misconception is that painting is easy. It’s not just a case of ‘mixing the right colour and putting it in the right place’ as one friend insists. Even Degas said that ‘painting is easy when you don’t know how, but difficult when you do’. Being faced with a blank sheet of paper, or canvas is intimidating, but the trick is to nonchalantly sidle up to it and catch it unawares - and then knock it for six! The second misconception is that

28

painting is relaxing. Absorbing yes, but by its very nature, I fi nd it about as relaxing as bathing a cat! The plein air painter is faced with many challenges, but it is the vagaries of the weather that cause the most problems. Besides bat t l i ng t he physic a l elements themselves, the extremes of temperature can be a real issue in t he pa i nt i ng proce s s too, particularly when working in watercolour. In the heat of summer the washes dry too fast and then in the winter months, f r u s t r a t i n g l y s l o w l y. Although rain is a nuisance, I fi nd that wind is the main protagonist. Sometimes it is necessary to sacrifice a good viewpoint to put your back to the wind, or to fi nd shelter from it. But one rule worth remembering is to never turn your back on your painting. Once a student made that mistake and turned his back on his completed The

pastel. A gust of wind lifted it off the easel and planted it squarely on his back leaving an almost perfect reproduction on his black jumper. He saw the funny side, but I don’t think he appreciated my quip of ‘you can buy one and get one free!’

Painting on Dartmoor Then there was the time I was painting with a group at Pin Mill, on the River Orwell. The day started well enough in bright sunshine painting a beautiful Thames Barge,

Devonshire

until that is, the wind began to pick up. Then I caught sight of the blackest cloud I have ever seen fast approaching. Next came the spits of rain and before I knew it I was on my own, with my students having already made a hasty retreat to the ‘Butt and Oyster’. In the blink of an eye, day had turned to night and there followed a torrential downpour. As the pub was some distance away I grabbed my painting and pastels and made a dash for the nearest cover available, which happened to be a sailing yacht on the hard. I huddled under the keel of the boat the best I could, but it was no sanctuary, as the rain simply ran down the side of the hull and on down the back of my neck. The scene before me looked like some artists battlefield, one of scattered and upturned stools and easels. The sight of an expensive sun umbrella torn to shreds and being blown along the foreshore like tumbleweed will stay with me forever.

Painters often find themselves off the beaten track in search of subjects, so it is little wonder that animals feature in my untoward events list. I once found myself surrounded by a herd of inquisitive bullocks in the water meadows at Dedham. I have to say it was quite a frightening experience, as they would not move despite my frantic shouting and arm waving. It reminded me of a quote by the painter Patrick Larking when he said ‘that he was not at his best as a painter with a cow licking the back of his neck!’ The most memorable time was when I led a painting course on the South Cornwall coast. Here I took a group to the middle of an open field to sketch picturesque Talland Bay. But typically, just as we settled down the heavens opened and with no nearby shelter at hand we decided to sit it out, getting thoroughly soaked in the process. When the rain abated we resumed our sketching only this time to be interrupted by a number of inquisitive horses. They not only prodded us with wet noses, but also insisted on rooting around in our bags. One of the painters even had her watercolour sketch licked by one of the horses. We had to laugh when we overheard her say: ‘Yes, I think it’s improved it!’ I love animals though, particularly dogs, but the problem is that they love me too. If they’re not ‘leaving their mark’ on my art bag, then it’s usually a ‘good shake’ near me after a swim. But the funniest story was on a recent painting course I led in Ireland. My group of painters and I arrived at the pretty harbour of Kinvara. As I began to paint, the group’s attention was diverted to a cat, which appeared on the scene, followed shortly by a boxer dog. We watched as they both settled in front of us a short distance apart. The cat began ‘hissing’ a warning and then the dog would growl back and so it went on with neither budging their ground. I had the distinct feeling that the students found the drama far more interesting than my demonstration. Although distracting, I was pleased that no fight ensued and later found out that they were both local characters and this happened to be a regular occurrence. People, as well as animals, a r e a l s o d r aw n to painters. When someone compliments my work it can be encouraging, but interruptions can also be a very disruptive factor too. Painting involves concentration and I am often so absorbed that I am unaware of anything else, even onlookers. If

Sheltering from the rain, Gweek

Evening Sail on the Exe, Exmouth interrupted I am never rude, but in my experience it is best to discourage conversation in the fi rst place. In anticipation, I sometimes place a brush between my teeth, so that I am not able to reply easily. Another good idea is to lay an upturned hat on the ground next to the easel with a few coins in it. This usually creates a wide berth and works every time! But my experience painting on the high rugged cliffs in North Cornwall has to be the strangest. It is a very remote and peaceful place and I remember looking up from my painting and seeing a figure wending his way along the coastal footpath some distance away. Before long he was stood behind me and before I could get my hat down, he asked

Ray at Cadgwith

if he could show me something, to which I cautiously agreed. Then from a carrier bag he brought out half a dozen small-framed paintings that he had done and asked if I would comment on them. I have done many critiques in my time, but never one in this situation. He went on to tell me that he lived further down the coast and had spotted me through his binoculars and thought it too good an opportunity to miss. I duly obliged of course, as I felt anyone prepared to walk a couple of miles carrying their paintings over difficult terrain deserved encouragement. Estuaries and harbours are some of my favourite subjects to paint and although I dislike being in boats, I love painting them. Because of the ever-changing tides it can also be a challenging subject. Painting boats at low tide is far easier though as they don’t move around, or disappear altogether on fishing trips - something that happens all too frequently. One can still be caught out though, as I discovered when I was painting in Newquay Harbour. Because it was high tide I chose to paint the only fi shing boat moored on what little sand that was left in the harbour. The painting was going well until I saw a crane come trundling along the quayside. It came to a halt above the boat I had chosen to paint and subsequently began lifting it out onto the quay. It’s always good for a painter to have a ‘kick in the tail’ now and again! Low tide can be

for What's On, visit: eastdevonhub .co.uk

just as problematic, particularly with fishermen parking their vans by their boats. Of the hundreds of boats in a harbour why it always has to be the one I’ve chosen as the focal point in my painting beats logic! However, my worse experience was encountered on a recent painting trip to Brittany, in the charming fi shing port of Erquy. It was low water so I positioned myself on a slipway below the harbour wall. It was idyllically quiet; the weather was good and the scene before me perfect. I should have known it was too good to last. For in the distance I heard what could only be described as a noise like rumbling thunder. As it got louder I turned to see not one, but six, that’s right six, JCB diggers trundling down the slipway followed by an army of workmen in high-vis jackets. Needless to say I made one very hasty retreat to let them pass. The scene was quite surreal and within minutes the beach was transformed from an idyllic harbour scene to one of a noisy industrial site, as the diggers began digging anchor chains from the sands. Just when I thought it could not get any worse, they began the task of cutting these with metal cutters. I can’t remember who said: ‘Art could be ever so funny if it wasn’t such a serious business,’ but it’s certainly true. Ray Balkwill’s new book ‘Travelling Light’ and art instruction DVD ‘Capturing Coastal Moods’ will be launched alongside an exhibition of recent paintings in his Studio Gallery, Thistledown, Marley Road, Exmouth. This runs from 17th ‒ 20th October. 10am ‒ 5pm. Dan Bolt

Dan was born in south Devon and for the past 25 years has been diving and snorkelling the coastline both for pleasure and as a source of endless opportunity for his hobby as an amateur underwater photographer

He is pictured above looking at a pair of ‘Polycera quadrilineata’ on sea grass

Nudibranchs

of the East Devon Coast by Diver and Underwater Photographer Dan Bolt

East Devon is understandably famous for the fabulous walking afforded by the South West Coast Path. Visitors and locals alike will appreciate the stunning views from the many beaches, coves and high cliff-tops looking outward into the ever-changing sea. But in other circles that same sea water is famous for its diversity and wealth of marine life; not just the richness of the fishing grounds but for the superb scuba diving on offer directly from the coastline or further off-shore from boats. Amongst the many hundreds of scuba divers who enjoy the warm waters of Lyme Bay, there are a small band of enthusiasts who have discovered the joy, and frustrations, of searching for the seemingly endless varieties of nudibranchs. Pronounced ‘Noo-dee-brank’ (which actually means ‘Naked Gills’ because their lungs are exposed and have no protection), these small marine creatures are a family of mollusc who have completely lost their external shell and for obvious reasons, are collectively known as Sea Slugs. Nudibranchs can be found the world over as well as throughout the whole of the UK, but the variety of marine habitats available in the waters

30

off East Devon make this area a rich hunting ground for many common a n d n o t- s o - co m m o n species. For every habitat niche there are a sub-family of slugs who thrive on those specific conditions; for example shallow reefs with lots of seaweeds, such as kelp, attract large numbers of Polycera quadrilineata, and deeper reefs further off shore that play host to slow-growing and nationally important Pink Sea Fan, upon which the effectively camouflaged nudibranch Tritonia nilsodhneri exclusively lives. East Devon’s waters hold a mix of cold-water species more commonly found in Scotland as well as southerly, warm water species often seen in the Mediterranean sea. As an example of the sheer numbers of individuals out there, there are over 60 species of nudibranch to be found just off the shoreline around the south west The

Devonshire

magazine

‘Polycera pharoensis’

as a whole. But more locally, on the reef off Budleigh Salterton’s promenade, it is possible to see a dozen different species in one dive and the shallow weed-covered rocks off Sidmouth and Beer are the perfect habitat for many different members of this diverse family. Ranging in size from a few millimetres to almost 30cm, all species of nudibranch are hermaphrodites and as such carry both male and female reproductive organs. When two individuals meet to mate, often both slugs will go on to be fertilized and lay pretty spirals or ribbons of many thousand of eggs. This is the start of an annual cycle as the vast majority of species live for less than 12 months. Many time their hatching for Spring when the warmer waters induce an explosion in numbers timed perfectly to coincide with their favourite food becoming more widely available. For divers who enjoy spotting the many forms, shapes and colours of nudibranchs, the best way to see them is to know what they eat. It is often easier to find their favoured food that the actual slug itself. A great example of this is Coryphella browni who munch their way through thousands of Hydroids (a form of colonial animal which favours sites with large tidal flows) in the early summer. Colonies of Hydroids are quite large (football sized or

'Eubranchus farrani'

larger) and easily found, then all the diver has to do is get close and search for the slug amongst the colony. The food a nudibranch consumes can also dictate their colouration and method of defence against would-be predators. Being a slow-moving, soft-bodied slug means they are a likely target for fish and crabs to seemingly pick off at leisure but his has lead to two major forms of defence. Nudibranchs like Eubranchus pallidus will rely either on superb camouflage or mimicry to hide from would-be attackers, while others will warn predators off with bright patterns and colouration backed-up by toxins and poisons. Those slugs such as Coryphella lineata, who feed on anemones which have stinging cells can actually recycle those cells to the tips of their bodies. So if a fish took a nibble they would be left with a nasty sensation in the mouth while the slug gets to live for another day. The good news is that you don’t have to be a trained diver to see these stunning little critters as some species can be found lurking in rock pools at low tide... if you are lucky! So the next time you are walking the beaches of East Devon it might be worth your while to take some time and peer through the water Continued overleaf...

(polarising sun-glasses help a great deal to see through the surface glare) and you may very well spot a mottled-yellow Sea Lemon (Archidoris pseudoargus, a relatively large slug at up to 6cm long) laying its delicate ribbon of eggs. The amazing thing about this family of animals is that even in the 21st century, marine biologists are still discovering new sub-species and redefining the accepted ranges of traditionally northern, or southern species of nudibranch. With the addition of DNA testing in the past few years the whole nudibranch world is beginning to be re-invigorated as a new perspective on

32

'Eubranchus farrani'

the lives of these enigmatic little creatures is being unmasked. Learning to identify the less obvious families within this group of animals can be a tricky task, and sometimes the differences can only be ascertained with the use of a magnifying glass - not that simple whilst scuba diving! And to add to the frustrations of would-be nudibranch spotters is what is known as a ‘colour morph’. This is when individuals from a single species can adopt wildly differing colourations and patterning. Take Eubranchus farrani as an example. This slug can be completely white,

white with yellow tips (and with or without coloured spots), completely orange, or black with yellow tips. Confusing? Most certainly! But there-in lies the attraction of these diminutive creatures to a great number of divers and marine biologists. There is a seemingly endless variety of nudibranch out there in our rich waters, and the knowledge that there are undiscovered or rare sightings still to be had drives many on to a never-ending search. Choosing a name was difficult. Driving past Beauchamp Place one evening (a street a few hundred yards from Harrods) Mandy thought it would make a great name and it brought back many happy memories. She has often been asked how to pronounce the name - it is not the French pronunciation but the English (Beecham) as in Hatch Beauchamp.

Cricket - as only the English can do it!

I

f you were asked what would typify a beautiful, quiet summer evening’s entertainment in England, you would only have one answer... an evening of cricket in a sleepy village in “England’s green and pleasant land”. Right answer. We can all picture it in our minds; well I thought I could until I spent tonight at our new local cricket ground which has been carefully prepared in our new neighbour’s field. The last word does need to be taken seriously... yes a 10 acre field, which until 3 weeks ago definitely had sheep grazing on it. Our neighbour is passionate about cricket and has, apparently, always dreamt of having a cricket pitch on his ground. His dream has come true. For the last few weeks they have been rolling, mowing, raking, strimming, scarifying, day in and day out. At last they were ready and the first match was declared – The 6 Bells Pub versus our neighbours own team.

The home team comprised an interesting assortment of multinational, multi aged, multi ability players. That’s being kind ! As for the cricket attire – perfect, all in white with the compulsory sleeveless jumper, with coloured V and matching band. So, so English.

The final score, as the light soon faded was a resounding win for the home team. Celebrations all around. The Pub team put up a good fight and their “player of the match” was awarded to their only female player who bowled underarm, with real style and speed, and managed to bowl out the oppositions highly rated No. 4 batsman. Joking apart, the evening was everything I hoped for. A beautiful setting, a good game of cricket played in the spirit it should be and the opportunity to meet our new neighbours and say thank you. Yet another true asset for our buoyant village – our own cricket pitch. Long live England and its unique traditions. - JANET EAST

LAND ROVER EXPERIENCE

ALL-TERRAIN DRIVING

The pub team – all fired up and set to conquer, turned up in various states of attire, but unfortunately, the 12th man didn’t exist !. The umpire – he wasn’t the normal type with long white coat and hat – he appeared to smoke throughout the entire proceedings, but I later learnt it was an electronic fag – never seen that on telly before. 20 overs, maximum 25 runs per player and everyone to bowl 2 overs . The stage was set. Perfect... well nearly. Our pub team fielded first and due to the inability of some players to bowl well, the opposition were soon hitting 4s – they were fine. The trouble soon came when the odd 6 was hit to the southern boundary. The first one went into the River Tale which bordered the field housing the new cricket pitch. Seemed such a tranquil setting. Not for the poor fielders who soon found themselves being handed a fishing net by the spectators, to fish the ball out of the river. That, in hindsight, was not a real issue. Hitting a 6 to the northern boundary was a completely different “ball game”. Necessary fishing net was yet again offered, but this time to fish it out of the slurry pit – no joke. The reason for the buckets of water set randomly along the fence soon became very clear. To wash the said ball off before being thrown back to the bowler. Do not jest though, as the match was being taken seriously by all concerned. A small marquee had been erected with an honesty bar, soon to be laden with the most delicious refreshments kindly provided by Libby and her team of helpers.

The Restaurant Inspector Visits: at Lyme Regis

on 20th September 2014

Superb food and fantastic value

Lovely views from the restaurant

Lyme's a great place to visit at any time really, even on a wet windy day you can enjoy the waves crashing across the Cobb. Actually, one of my favourite drives is along the coast road from Sidmouth to Lyme, the views of the bay on the approach being truly inspirational. If you enjoy great views whilst dining, then By The Bay has it all, situated in an elevated position, with the harbour and open sea, and

sea, bobbing boats, and the Cobb. When you enter the restaurant, the first thing you notice is just how cheerful, welcoming and happy a place it is, all staff smile effortlessly. One of my major gripes about restaurants, is that many never give any consideration to how comfortable the chairs are - I know this is deviating a bit, but it's amazing how even some of the best restaurants have really uncomfortable chairs. Needless

This was excellent, the salad being well dressed, the crab meat and prawns succulent. The other starter we tasted was the Grilled Field Mushroom which was topped with Dorset Blue Vinny cheese and served with a dressed salad and pine nuts. Again, top marks here, all excellently prepared and tasty. Onto the main dishes, we sampled the Seafood Platter (you can ask for smaller portions which we had). Equally, this was all excellent, as Star of the Show

Flaming Creme BrulĂŠe

Delicious By the Bay Crab Stack with crostini and dressed salad leaves indeed the crescent of Lyme Bay visible out of the windows or from the balcony, it's a great spot to relax and dine - this really contributes to your enjoyment of the meal as I always maintain, dining out is not just about the food, it's the whole experience that adds to your enjoyment. Turning up at about 8pm, the sun had gone down and I have to confess although I'd walked past By The Bay many times in the daytime, I'd never really noticed what a great location it's positioned in or indeed what a cheerful place it is. If you like people watching, then you can just sit and watch the world go by amongst a beautiful backdrop of

46

The

Great ambiance - fun, cheerful and relaxed dining

Seafood Platter, scampi, squid, whitebait, king prawns with mayo & chilli dip and salad leaves to say, no such problem here, their rather modern looking Italian chairs were excellent.

For starters, we opted for the Crab Stack, which was crab meat mixed with paprika mayonnaise, layered with prawns and served with crostini and dressed salad.

Devonshire

Moules Frites - really excellent! was the smaller portion we tasted of Moules Frites - By The Bay's portions are really generous, so be careful. For pudding, I had the Creme BrulĂŠe which appeared flaming, and accompanied with fresh strawberries and blueberries. To follow we had cappuccinos - their coffee's really good by the way and their prices are all very reasonable. We had a great night out, the excellent food, views, ambiance, friendly staff, unstuffy atmosphere, fantastic setting (and really comfortable seating!), all add up make By The Bay a great restaurant. You can even take your dog. I'd say it's a definite 'must visit'. Editor

The Undercliff

Ted Gosling shares some historical notes on the Axmouth to Lyme Regis Undercliffs - established by Nature Conservancy as a National Category Nature Reserve in April 1955

Ted Gosling West Country Author and Devon Historian Curator of Seaton Museum, Ted continues to preserve and document our valuable Devonshire history, having written over 40+ books to date. Ted's a sprightly octogenarian with encyclopedic local history knowledge. A great fellow all round and an asset to our community - Editor The Dowlands Landslip, 1839-40 looking east

The Changing Scene

Agriculture

Land slipping was first recorded in the Lyme Regis area in the 16th century, but it has probably been going on for thousands of years.

Grazing of sheep, goats and pigs in the Undercliffs was important until early this century. The grazing dues were high probably because of the long season. Most of the tree cover has developed du r i ng t he la st 50 years. There was human habitation until the 1950s.

1689 - ‘Great convulsions’ to the west of Lyme. 1724 - A slip from the summit of Golden Cap. 1765 - A great slip in the Whitlands area.

1840 3 February - A slip of similar magnitude at Whitlands. 1876 - A slip at Pinhay. 1961 - The Humble Green-Charton slips which produced the famous pressure ridge. 1963-4 - A number of significant slips at Lyme, Pinhay-Dowlands. 1969 - Charton Bay, with the loss of the carriage road to Humble Point and Seven Rock Point and along the sea cliffs west of Charton Bay and along to Axmouth.

1788 - A ‘rougemont at Beer, with an uplifted beach’. Land subsided about 200 ft. 1790 - Underhooken. The beech was pushed outwards about 200 yards, the fall was 250 ft and the acreage just over 10. 1790-1800 - A great slip at or near the present (1839) slip at Bindon-Dowlands.

48

1985 - Early spring saw a large area of Pinhay Warren-Pinhay Lake slump down some 80-100ft. Slipping has increased at times since then. 186 - Late winter - early spring, slipping gradually at Rousdon, west of Allhallows.

The

There had been several cottages below Whitlands, where there is the ruin of the Westcliff Cottage, c1830, known later at Stanley Cottage. This marked the western end of the Whitlands (formerly Clevelands) estate. Here there had been a large orchard and a pheasantry. At Pinhay Warren is the ruin of East Cliff Cottage, at the eastern boundary of the estate. In several places there was the coppicing of hazel for pea sticks, bean poles and hurdles, etc. Names such as Donkey’s Green, Rock Orchard and Pinhay Warren tell us something of the activities and we know that soft fruit was grown and nuts were picked in large quantities. At Dowlands Cliffs is a sheepwash that was fed from a well-spring clean sheep fetched better prices that dirty ones. There was a cart road from Dowlands Farm to the

cottages below, so transport was easy. In many places are remains of stone walls, forming boundaries or animal pens.

At the eastern end of the Reserve is a large area of bracken, this is Ware Common. Grazing rights still exist there but are no longer practiced. Bracken often encroaches when grazing ceases which, as it is no longer used for animal bedding or burnt for potash for the glass industry, has resulted in its increase becoming a problem through-out the British Isles. Industry The early Ordnance Survey Maps (first published 1809) show lime kilns at Bindon Charton and Whitlands, where there were also quarries. Building sandstone was also quarried at Bindon, Rousdon and Axmouth. Names such as ‘Hurdle Green’ i nd icate t hei r t rade a nd hurdles were made at Bindon-

Habitations etc. In the nineteenth century the inhabita nts were listed as woodmen, quarrymen, shepherds and pigherds, but there is little evidence of numbers or of locations of cottages, apart from some above Pinhay Warren and at Whitlands. There appear to have been more in the western half, probably because of the steep ridges and gulleys in the eastern section, especially between Charton and Pinhay. Diligent searching reveals remains of building walls here and there, but only about half a dozen have been found so far. Shepherds Cottages were the most substantial.

Downlands and WhitlandsPinhay Undercliff until well into the present century. Mr Gapper used to make them at Cliff Cottage. A company called Pebbles & Flints ran a pebble picking industry at the Axmouth end at the reserve, which continued until the 1960s.

About 1835, Rock Cottage was built at Downlands, originally built as a pair. At the time of the 1839 slip it was occupied by William Critchard and his wife and children. On Christmas Eve he and his wife were at the Ashen Faggot ceremony at Downlands Farm, Rousdon. They arrived home at around 1 a.m. to find their baby-sitter distressed, as there had been frightening rumbling noises and the house had shaken. They sent her home and went to bed. In the early hours pieces of ceiling fell down with the vibration and plaster came from the walls. William got up and, with difficulty, opened the back door to find rocks and a high bank behind the house, which can bee seen there today,

and that the garden in front had gone down several feet. Mrs Critchard had served meals and refreshments to people walking by. When this happened, their furniture and belongings were taken by horse and cart and they lived up on the estate. However, she did return every spring and summer for several years to continue the catering, although she did not live there. The house therefore fell into disrepair and some years later was pulled down. The material from it was used to build the thatched Cliff Cottage about 200m to the east, which was also a pair of cottages. Later it was occupied by the Gapper family until the 1950s. In the early 1920 the house was converted into one cottage and the chimney stacks were heightened. The garden layout and boundaries can still be seen, as well as the lower parts of the walls. The well was a shallow one, a dug out spring, and was the same that the Critchards had used. There is still some water in it, but no longer a steady flow. Immediately to the west is the Hazel Grove and

at the bend in the path about half-way through it is a low, flat rock, known as the ‘resting stone’. Just near the western end of the grove, The Avenue starts, and to the right is the path to Badgers Pond, and the way up the cliff is known as The Tunnel. Further west there is a walled enclosure on the seaward side of the path, which was a sheep pen and also a vegetable garden. This was one of four, and Critchards can be seen on the south side of the path at his cottage site. It was reached by the three stone steps at the eastern end. More recent inhabitants were the Home Guard during the Second World War, and two or three German prisoners of war who had escaped from the POW camp which was sited at the Warners Holiday Camp. They holed up for a considerable period, no doubt keeping well out of the way of Dad’s Army, whose whereabouts were easily seen by the coiled barbed-wire fencing and staking at all possible landing and entry points. The army is said to have cleared all the mines, but no certificate was issued. Since then there have been criminals in makeshift tents in the rock clefts, but none has endured there for long. - Ted Gosling

Expect to see ravens, nesting peregrine falcons, screech owls, barn owls, little owls and many smaller birds such as nuthatches, tree creepers, dunnocks, gold finches, black cap to name a few. In terms of plant life, the temperate, humid microclimate supports a multitude of rare species with prolific small mammal and insect life.

The FOOTPATH

Beware, it stretches for about 7 miles and is only accessible at either end. It's not permitted to leave the path along the route due to the dangerous terrain and nature reserve status. Make sure you take provisions! NOTE - as at publication time, a landslip has blocked the path 1.5 miles from Axmouth end, although a diversion is being organised.

SPECIAL PROJECT

Looking at local businesses excelling in their craft

We speak to Edward Willis Fleming and Polly Woodward at Sidmouth Design

Great pick-me-up zing here, it’s part of the basement garage space that has been repurposed to get the most out of available space

Polly Woodward and Edward Willis Fleming (MD)

Edward’s main role at Sidmouth Design is in providing architectural advice to clients and project managing larger building projects in addition to advising on and supplying fireplaces. Polly is responisble for interior design, soft furnishings and can also advise on smaller building projects. Sidmouth Design can maintain high levels of quality control on all projects and have an excellent reputation in the region. The business has been in existence for the last 25 years. Amanda Merchant - is the Devonshire magazine’s regular Home & Interiors contributor Amanda Merchant studied a ceramics degree at Cardiff, before deciding to focus her career in interior design. She worked as the international showroom designer, visual merchandiser and accessory designer for a London-based fabric house, specialising in linens, paisleys and embroidered accessories. Nowadays, between raising a daughter and further training, she writes and practises her interior design skills in East Devon.

Another of Sidmouth Design’s creations, beautiful coordination of colours, patterns and furniture!

Exceptional use of basement space, what was a spacious, drab garage, is now a multi purpose home-living area, whilst retaining car parkings space

situated in a field in Sidbury. The project aims to convert the piggery into a two bed luxury holiday let, with accommodation also being provided for owls, bats, house martins and swallows. The design is such that it will retain the feel and charm of an old agricultural building, with extensions done in vertical oak boarding, to give a sense of a barn-like structure. The intention is to make the residents of the building aware of the historic interest of it, and in its location in the middle of a meadow, making it feel very close to nature. Another member of this team is Interior designer, Polly Woodward, who

joined Sidmouth Design 4 years ago. After working for Interiors of Exeter and Spring Home in Topsham, Polly went on to set up her own business called Polly Woodward Interiors in 2004. With an incredible eye for detail and design, Polly works closely with her clients to transform their interiors.

Polly has just completed a project for a house in Sidmouth which has significant historical interest. Even though the house itself has retained its character, the interior was in need of an update from the 1980s. Polly worked closely with the client to produce each scheme,

Another client in Exeter needed some help with her study. The room needed to primarily have her two daughters in mind, who both needed a desk each, and lots more storage. Polly worked again with her client very closely, and designed floor-to-ceiling book cases, which their

carpenter produced to spec. A large Roman blind in a beautiful Sanderson fabric with peacock feathers, also took centre stage in the study. It is a relief to know that if any aspect of refurbishment is proving difficult, there are local companies in Devon who can help to deliver your dream. With more and more residents re-locating from London and other major cities, it can be somewhat of a shock sometimes to realise that we too can offer the design advice, products and craftsmanship that any other major city in the world has to offer.

She wrote to her father: “He alleged various reasons, hatred to children, religious motives, a desire to preserve my beauty, and, finally this last year he told me his true reason... that he had imagined women were quite different to what he saw I was, and that the reason he did not make me his Wife was because he was disgusted with my person the first evening.” Five years later poor Effie married Ruskin’s protégé, painter John Everett Millais (most famously he painted The Boyhood of Raleigh at Budleigh) who clearly found nothing about Effie to revolt him and together they had eight children. Playing with fire! THE SQUARE IS PACKED. It’s nearly midnight and the last barrel of the year is zig-zagging through the crush, everyone craning their necks, standing on tip-toe to know will it come their way. The next runner lifts it to his shoulders, blackened by soot, the potato-sacking wrapped round his hands already smouldering with the heat. Very soon now, with the iron hoops glowing red, he must heave the remains crashing to the ground. The men will throw their own gloves into the blaze, grinning at one another and shaking hands. They will sing Auld Lang Syne. The ritual is over for another year.

This ancient Devon tradition needs treating with respect

Ottery St Mary’s TAR BARRELS So come and watch - but just stand well back! THE DAWN WILL COME UP LIKE THUNDER from the firing of a dozen ‘rock canons’ in one particular Devon town this November 5th as it has done since who knows when. The town is Ottery St. Mary and the year that began what is now known universally as Tar Barrel Night is lost in the smoke of a thousand bonfires. The only certainty is that if someone tried to roll out those famous blazing barrels from scratch nowadays it would give a Health & Safety inspector a heart attack – which doesn’t mean that visitor safety is not of paramount importance to the people who run it each year. Their job is to oversee the running of seventeen blazing barrels as they pass

The

rapidly through the narrow streets of the town on the shoulders of the chosen ones – and that means Ottery-born and Ottery-bred – the only people empowered to carry this honour. Accompanied by warning shouts of ‘”Up’ards!” or “Down’ards!” they run pell-mell through the crowds who gather in this ancient town, sparks and flames spewing from the mouths of the barrels as they twist and turn, scattering the throng until things get too hot to handle and the next runner wrestles it onto his own shoulders. To drop a barrel is to bring about its premature demise and the old sweats amongst the runners

reckon to be able to keep a barrel blazing for 20 minutes or more. But unlike the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona this isn’t a display of mindless bravado played out for the benefit of a crowd, as Andy Wade, the event organiser told Devonshire magazine, “This town has an ancient history and for those of us who take part in Tar Barrel Night this is part of a way of life”. “We are proud of an annual event that has been passed down through generations and we ask that people who come to celebrate the night with us treat those traditions with respect. And the best way to treat a flaming tar barrel with respect is to stand well back and watch!

Echoes from the past OTTERY WAKES EARLY every November 5th to the sounds of canon fire. Not ship’s canons you understand but so-called ’rock canons’, hand-held lengths of pipe - looking as though they might once have belonged to Dick Turpin - stuffed with explosive powder and detonated by striking an explosive cap with a second piece of ironmongery. These are let off, sometimes singly, sometimes 12 at a time. If you live out of town these explosions come as deep reverberating thuds. Closer to they rattle windows, scatter pigeons and set unknown numbers of Ottregians turning over in their beds to check their alarm clocks and say things like, “Oh, joy! It’s Tar Barrel Day today!” It is 5am.

Ottery St Mary’s TAR BARRELS

Go to blazes! CAMERAS AT THE READY? Picture this. It’s 7.30 and a massive bonfire, the size of a three-storey house and weeks in the building, is reflected in the River Otter. The heat is already intense as the blaze grows higher and Guy Fawkes’s dreams go up in smoke for the 408th year in succession to the cheers of the crowds and the neon-lit whiz and throb of the fair across the river. Down there is the Millennium Meadow and up here we are on St. Saviour’s bridge. It’s a great vantage point and where much of the crowd gathers as the first of the Men’s barrels is lit. The coal tar catches, the flames lick round the rim and the crowd parts as this first of “the big unz” starts down the slope towards the town, scattering the crowd as it goes. Look out, Ottery!

Ottery St Mary’s TAR BARRELS All our yesterdays THE LAST NIGHT OF OCTOBER was special in the old Celtic calendar. Our pagan ancestors called it Samhain and their priesthood marked it as dusk fell with the lighting of hundreds of huge bonfires on hilltops to guide departed spirits home to their loved ones. Countless tens of thousands of torches were then lit from these beacons and carried by families to their homesteads where they were used to light their hearth fires. A meal was prepared and an empty place set at table in honour of the departed. The two sides of the great divide were thus reunited for one

Carry on barreling! ONCE UPON A TIME the seventeen barrels that are carried through the day could all be sourced locally, originally from the pubs and cider houses that once graced the town. Today Ottery has fewer places to whet a whistle but the runners still follow more or less the old routes that do honour to their memory. The barrels still come from the West Country for the most part but Andy Wade and his merry band have been known to go off piste a little when the occasion warrants it. Like November 5th 2006 for instance, 401 years to the day after Guy Fawkes got his come-uppance, when they managed to track down an oak barrel dating from 1606 in a Portuguese wine cellar to mark the day. Going to those lengths to underline that

brief hour at midnight each year. Comes the 9th century and in an attempt to snuff out the resulting rituals once and for all, the early Christian church in Britain moved to supplant the day itself by moving the date of its own All Saints Day to November 1st, and re-naming November 2nd, All Souls Day. How relieved it must have been finally in 1606 when Guy Fawkes failed to blow up Parliament but King James ordered the country to celebrate his personal salvation on each subsequent anniversary, by lighting bonfires, burning Fawkes in effigy, letting off of a canon or two, and generally making merrie with whatever lay to hand. The date of course was November

once-in-a-lifetime date comes under the heading of ABCD. Above and Beyond the Call of Duty! After the choosing comes the checking, at a secret location near Ottery where the barrels are stored and the all-important preparations work is begun. The wooden staves of each barrel need to be sound, along with the retaining iron bands that will need to confine the forthcoming firestorm for as long as possible. The bung-holes are sealed and sealed again - nobody wants a stream of molten coal tar pouring down their backs as things start to hot up. Each barrel is then lined with coal tar: building up by layers until it is a quarter inch thick. Comes the big night paper and straw are thrown into the black void to start the blaze. When the tar is well and truly alight they are picked up man-handled across the shoulders of the first of the succession of

5th, and near enough on the calendar for the vast majority of Brits to set aside their pagan past and celebrate instead the execution of a terrorist. Job done. Well, almost - because as those Jacobean settlers left these shores bound for the Americas they abandoned the monarchy - and Guy Fawkes Night - but took with them, almost unnoticed, our old Hallowe’en. Now it’s back from across he Atlantic with a vengeance and every sweet shop, toy store and Kwikimart in Christendom has been quick to embrace the orange and black plague of trick and treatery we thought we had seen the back of. What goes round comes round.

runners, who are bent double under the weight. The smallest of the barrels, are for the boys and the young maids, as they are still called y’ere ‘bouts. With school over at last and the light already getting dimpsey the youngsters run the first of their barrels at 4pm. The completion of these runs is also a signal that the town should now be closed to traffic and scores of Town Marshals and Barrel Marshals see that the town is sealed from 5pm onwards. The medium sized barrels are for the women-folk of Ottery, who run their own barrels starting at 9pm. The gert big unz is a Men Only affair with the biggest and last barrel of the year is run at midnight in the Square. The competition to make the running with that last barrel can be fierce.

Poor old Guy Fawkes?

The best way to witness a unique Devon tradition

- that chant, in full:

REMEMBER, REMEMBER the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot. Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, ‘twas his intent to blow up the King and the Parliament. Three score barrels of powder below, poor old England to overthrow. By God’s providence he was catched, with a dark lantern and burning match. Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King! Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray! A penny loaf to feed ol’ Fawkes, a farthing cheese to choke him, a pint of beer to rinse it down, a faggot of sticks to burn him. Burn him in a tub of tar, burn him like a blazing star. Burn his body from his head, then we’ll say ol’ Fawkes is dead. Hip hip hooray! Hip hip hooray!

EVERY YEAR between 15 - 20 thousand people are attracted to Ottery St. Mary from far and wide to cram into the town’s narrow streets to witness this unique and historic event. So how to get the best view, keep safe and get the best out of a night that begins at 4 o’clock and goes on until after midnight? We asked the man in charge of proceedings, Andy Wade. He told us:“The more people who come the more difficult running with the barrels can be and that can be frustrating for the runners who are there primarily to continue a tradition. The first thing to remember therefore is that you are there at our event at your own risk”. “We can do little to reduce the numbers but we can and do ask visitors to follow a few simple rules to reduce the risk to themselves and those around them”. “If you can’t stand being part of a very large, tightly packed crowd you should either stay away or, if you do come, move to a less congested area or pick a barrel location away from the centre of the town”. “Where would that be? Buy an official programme and look at the map and the times and starting points for each barrel”. “DO NOT BRING SMALL CHILDREN TO THE EVENING BARRELS! It gets too crowded. The ideal time is late afternoon to early evening when the youngsters carry their barrels, there is more room and it is just as exciting”. “Do not try to touch the barrels when they are being carried. They are all heavy and finely balanced on the shoulders of the carrier. Trying to tap or bang a barrel as it passes might cause the weight to shift and the barrel to fall into the crowd”. “This is NOT the place for groups of thrill seekers ‘looking for a bit of a laugh’. We ask them to stay away”. “Finally, listen to the excellent public address system: it not only gives you useful location information but broadcasts safety information as well”.

Family tradition THEY CALL THEMSELVES OTTREGIANS - the 150 people from 50 and more Ottery families who take part in Tar Barrel Night each year. And as the night approaches the excitement in countless homes in the town builds like the approach to Christmas. This year, like last year and for as far back as anyone can remember, there will be three and sometimes four generations of some families taking part in the organisation, marshalling or running of the barrels.

Tales of a Yokel

Yarns from the inimitable FCR Esgen

HAVING FAITH IN MY FRIDGE by FCR ESGEN “Fridges are supposed to live in the kitchen!” exclaimed Faith in exasperation: to be fair I can see her point, as the average person must be in and out of the super-chilled box at least a dozen times a day. I include myself of course, in those figures, because I use my fridge to store milk for all those endless cups of tea that seem so essential to the English and also to house the remnants of the odd chicken korma take-

out. The only problem, as my friend so kindly pointed out, is that it lives in a place other than the kitchen. This place is 56 foot from the kitchen to be exact; and no, I do not live in a mansion where the corridor to the pantry is a good stroll for the butler, but in a rather bijou flat where the only other incumbent is a tabby cat called Mouse. It was called this by the girl next door in the hope it might earn its living in

the traditional way rather than me having recourse to always walking down to the shops for more tiddles, or whatever my cat food is called. Anyway, I digress, as my ex-wife used to tell me so often, and get back to the cold subject in hand.

In all truth I cannot remember why my fridge is in an old shed at the bottom of the garden that used to double as the outside loo, but it has lived there quite happily for a number of years and it even gets a clean now and then if I feel in the mood. © 2014

has 17 ribs instead of the usual 18. It also has a concave muzzle, but most amazing is that if you trace the spine up from the base of the tail, between the 13th and 14th vertebrae it is very flexible. This allows the horse to ‘stand’ and ‘dance’, a characteristic which has passed onto the Lippizaner horse made famous by the Spanish School of Riding, although the horses were actually bred in Austria. But back to the lady horse breeder. In her later years she became frail and took to sleeping downstairs in her rather chaotic lounge. Natalie Bucklar gives valuable advice on various aspects of horse care and welfare...

Feeding according to need As the days get shorter and the weather colder, humans often change their diet to match seasonal variability in produce. Horses too will have their diet adapted due to the reduced amount of grass available in many winter management routines. Horse feed sales rocket at this time of year, as it is more common for horses to be fed supplementary bucket feed in the winter compared to summer. Care must be taken that anthropomorphism doesn’t creep in, as there will always be a feed company with a slick marketing campaign as long as there are horse owners who will feed based on human feelings rather than on their horses needs. Take course mix for example. To the human eye it looks much more appealing than hay. Course mix has bright yellow flakes of maize, green peas, different shapes and an enticing sweet aroma from molasses. To us, hay looks boring, bland and tasteless;

www.oldlodgekennels.co.uk

humans would never accept a plate of food in a restaurant that was all the same colour and shape, we begin eating with our eyes and nose before the food even reaches our mouth. Course mix in particular isn’t suitable for many leisure horses because although it might look good to people and taste good to the horse, the majority of horses just don’t work hard enough to need the high starch levels provided by the cereals it contains. Hay, although physically unappealing to humans, offers far more to the horse than course mix. Beyond the high fibre content that perfectly complements the design of the horse’s digestive system, it also offers a much greater psychological benefit from extended chewing time. To humans, a diet of just hay and grass is boring, it doesn’t seem ‘enough’. People also like the idea of a horse being incredibly pleased to see them when they arrive, or desperate to go into their stable. But you won’t see many teachers giving their pupils a chocolate bar when they turn up to school in the morning because although a child would readily accept it and it would certainly make the teacher more popular, it doesn’t achieve much nutritionally and the happiness gained from eating it has a short time span. People are accustomed to a varied diet, usually based within three meals a day, so this eating pattern is often replicated by providing bucket feed to horses. However, our digestive systems are totally different and horses just aren’t designed to eat meals as they have evolved to eat little and often; in the wild horses will eat for approximately 18 hours a day by continually grazing and browsing, so the practice of providing bucket feed is actually incongruous to the horse. Feeding horses is an art and a science, they should be fed as individuals, with their age, breed, management, health, workload, management routine and environment taken into account. With all these variables, there is little room for us to add our feelings too! Natalie x

I know from personal experience how much Girlguiding can help make a difference to someone’s life. For me, being a brownie helped me gain self confidence, which was a real problem when I was little. My group, leaders and the other brownies provided me with support, comfort and friendship in what was a very confusing and scary world. This is what Girlguiding does, it helps girls, and women, not to feel alone through, what sometimes is a very complex time in your life. It provides a chance to discover your full potential and raises aspirations.
