Editor’s Letter If you recall last winter (08), we had a sudden snowfall. If you live in Budleigh, then you’ll know that the snow wasn’t too sticky and cleared fairly quickly. A few miles further inland, the snow managed to build up to quite a deep level. Snow is quite a rare occurrence in this warm part of Britain, but when it does come, it can create some spectacular scenes. It was most entertaining, watching my two Jack Russells ploughing up to their necks in the snow drifts. Regarding the “Longboat Cafe” scheme, if you haven’t heard about this proposed scheme, the idea is to build a great big glass and metal two storey structure at roughly the centre of the esplanade. Personally, I think that if this scheme gets the go ahead, it will forever shatter the sleepy, peaceful and unspoilt feeling that Budleigh has as a quiet seaside town. Will this proposed development benefit the public and residents? - I should very much doubt it, there is already a charming cafe which opens in the summer season. Once the summer season has gone, Budleigh is usually very quiet and a building such as the one proposed,
would no doubt stand empty. It’s always reassuring, looking back at old picture postcards of Budleigh, to see how little it’s changed. Budleigh Salterton is so unique, it deserves to be protected from a commercial enterprises that would have little consideration for the unique location which ultimately, it would ruin. Regards J. Memories of the old days recounted by Frank Farr with the older people who did not have any. Everyone helped each other. There were whist drives and dances in the village hall in Middle Lane twice a week. What a happy little village it was.
Bygone Memories By Frank Farr
“Good Old Times” Just before Christmas, East Budleigh Silver Band would go around playing carols at Knowle village, East Budleigh, Yettington, Bicton and Otterton. They would walk or go on their bikes. When they played at Bicton House, The Rt Hon Lord Clinton would invite them into the ballroom to play and all his household would come in to hear. After they were given a good meal with beer to drink and a good donation. His lordship and ladyship were dear, good people to the villages around. At his lordship and ladyship’s golden wedding the party went on for 3 days. On the first day, Lord Clinton had all his friends, Lord Coldridge, Sir John Kennaway, Sir Clive Morris Bell, Sir Winston Churchill and several more come to mind. Lord Clinton was the biggest employer after the farms. The church choir would go around singing carols with the band. When the sweet Chestnuts started to fall in Bicton Park the deer would open them with their sharp hooves and eat the nuts. Nearly everyone had a few cockerels to kill for Christmas also some had geese and everyone tried to share

There were 2 sand quarries in the village and a gravel quarry. There were 2 petrol pumps at the Rolle Arms. The tanks are still under the car park and now filled with water. In the fine summer evenings one would see several ladies making Honiton lace with their cat or dog laid beside them. We had a fish and chip shop run by Mr & Mrs Pullering - the building still stands today. Draught beer was 5d a pint and bottled 6d a pint. It was supplied by City Brewer at Exeter. There was pigeon shooting, you went to the gamekeeper and told him what wood you wanted to go in and he gave you a ticket with your name on it.
visitors and village people with a driver called Bill Rowland. There were 10 motor cars and lorries in the village. Mr Annis owned a steam Centrional driven by Mr Shoot and fireman Mr Cyril Gooding. I couldn’t have been more than ten or twelve when the ill-fated Graff Zeppelin (the R101) passed over East Budleigh on its way to France where it crashed killing all the crew. We used to climb the conker trees at the pound to shake the nuts down. We used to bake the conkers to make them harder. We also used to cut our names with a pocket knife in the soft bark. In September, we would go picking blackberries and sell them for 6d a pound. In the summer school holidays we would spend hours down at the river Otter. Sometimes you would be lucky and see a mother otter with cubs. The otter hounds used to meet at the river bridge at Otterton - this stopped in about 1947. We would spend hours picking wild flowers in the meadows; in one spot, a fine lot of wild orchids grew and still do. We made our own entertainment in those days and we enjoyed it. Happy days.
We still have a master baker and chef in the village a real good Devon man. The holly tree at the top of the village is over 200 years old and the houses behind it all built of cob. In the early 1900’s Mr Clarke kept the pub now renamed The Sir Walter Raleigh, he had a hansom cab which Floods in Budleigh Salterton he let out to

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life scientists reckon that’s even worse for eroding tooth enamel – unless, of course, you eat cheese at the same time. More worryingly, other researchers have found it’s best not to drink white wine before embarking on IVF treatment. According to reports men and women who each had six units of alcohol a week or more ‘significantly reduced their likelihood of pregnancy’. I would have thought a man’s chance of pregnancy was pretty low anyway, but then I failed biology ‘O’ level.
Isn’t Science Wonderful? By Cec Hardy Happy New Year! Hope you enjoyed a jolly Festive Season and didn’t stint on the wine. They say it’s good for you. Well, some experts do. There’s been a huge amount of research carried out on this vital subject. I suspect some scientist somewhere, sometime will research anything given suitable conditions and funding. Who else could or would have discovered that your average housefly hums in the key of E? Or that termites eat through wood at double speed when rock music’s playing? I confess to the occasional glass of vino at times of stress but thought maybe I’d make a healthy New Year resolution this year and forsake the demon drink. That was before I heard that red wine can help reduce the risk of heart disease. I was even more delighted by reports that it can help prevent and treat gum disease, since I’ve suffered from receding gums for years. When I see a new dentist they’re wont to summon colleagues and nurses to witness and photograph these miracle teeth without visible means of support. Best stick to the wine, I thought, giving it up might be detrimental to my heart and molars. But like most things in life there’s a catch, for the acidic content of red wine can apparently cause dental erosion so those pristine gums will be redundant once the teeth have dissolved. And it’s no good changing to white wine since some German

Luckily most experts seem to agree we can enjoy alcohol in moderation and I’ve certainly no intention of popping the pills rumoured to be under development which have all the benefits of a glass of wine but no alcohol. Ughh! Wife Christine (who’s been complaining I haven’t mentioned her yet) thinks I should adopt a positive resolution instead. She’s suggested a New Year ‘Singing for Snorers’ course. Have to say I wasn’t thrilled at the prospect of venturing out on a cold winter’s night to practise three-part snoring harmony, but she assures me you may achieve results in the comfort and privacy of your own shower as long as you don’t mind the CDs getting wet. I expect to be snoring for England by the year’s end. Anyway, did you enjoy the ‘naughties’? Don’t panic, I just mean the first ten years of the 21st Century? Personally I’m looking forward to the 22nd. Can’t be any worse, can it? At least it should be warmer and you won’t have to travel far to bathe in balmy waters, as they could be on your doorstep. But I’m not sure I want to be among the 70 million odd inhabitants of this rapidly shrinking island. “Why should that bother you?” my astute

reader may ask, “you’ll be long gone.” Sorry to disagree, sir or madam, but I might still be around if scientists are to be believed. Sitting comfortably? Then I’ll explain. Life expectancy has been increasing yearly ever since I were a lad back in the first half of the dim distant 20th Century. Not only that but the increase has been increasing, so to speak. A man allegedly adds three months every year to his life expectancy (not as much for women, but that’s only fair as they’ve always lived longer) so eventually that should increase to over a year meaning that men will have added an extra year’s lifespan before they’ve finished the one they’re in. Confused? Don’t worry, these eternal life predictions could be overtaken by events anyway as we may all become too obese to squeeze through the supermarket or restaurant door and expire from hunger at a much earlier age. Ever decreasing circles.... Don’t miss out on the new deadline if you’re thinking about retirement From April 2010 you will have to wait until age 55 before you are allowed to take benefits from your pension policy - so those of you who feel they want to access their pension pots earlier must start planning straight away. This change in regulations will affect those born between 1956 and 1960 and if you miss this deadline you may have to wait for another 5 years before being able to take your retirement benefits and this could affect your retirement plans. No doubt this will result in a bottleneck at annuity providers during the early part of the year so the onus is on getting your paperwork right and making sure that your pension gets through the administration hurdle. Apart from providing invaluable advice on your pension and retirement options we can also make sure that your paperwork is properly completed so that you meet the
deadlines that are going to be all important this spring. Don’t forget that if you have a medical condition or you are a smoker it might be necessary to get further information from your doctor as well as the fact that your application may need medical underwriting and all this will all add to the time that you need to get your application processed. According to Partnership Assurance, 40% of those seeking an annuity could qualify for an enhancement. Generally, I feel that this is certainly the case as I tend to deal with more and more enhanced/impaired annuities. Remember, you sometimes only need a combination of a couple of conditions before you qualify for an enhancement. I don’t know if you remember last winter (2008), but we were lucky enough for the snow to fall for a couple of days, which provided a really lovely visual feast. Living as we do in the far south, snow is real treat, especially for children. My own dogs having never seen snow before seemed to really enjoy the experience of running in the
snow. Being small dogs, they spent much of their time up to their bellies in the snow. The walk this issue is a fairly easy one and most of it is on metalled tracks or quiet lane. The walk passes the Paccombe Training Centre which is a Donkey Sanctuary facility, so expect to see donkeys on this walk, this makes it ideal for children.

Ratty’s Back Water Voles Return to East Devon’s River Tale Just a hundred years after Wind in the Willows, water voles are
sadly extinct in most of Devon and Cornwall. However, thanks to the efforts of local environmen-
tal charity the Tale Valley Trust, ‘Ratty’ is now well and truly back in East Devon’s river Tale. After ten years of river restoration and bank-side habitat enhancement, and with the cooperation and enthusiasm of the farmers and the local community, the eight mile river corridor is once more a haven for native wildlife. The results have been extraordinary. According to Environment Agency surveys, fish-life has increased ten fold since 1999, and in recognition of this success in 2005 the Tale Valley Trust won the national Brown Trout Conservation Award. By fencing cattle away from the river other than at designated crossing and drinking points, banks are no longer eroded, river weed and spawning beds are not trampled, and nest-
ing tunnels and burrows are not crushed. As a result, insect life has increased, allowing fish, birds and mammals to thrive. Dippers and kingfishers are nesting, otters have repopulated the entire valley, and reptiles and bats are benefiting too. However, there is still one villain in the plot, Himalayan balsam, the annual bankside plant with the explosive seed heads which is highly invasive. Each year the Tale Valley Trust journey the length of the river, removing by hand every plant they see. And so it was that during this year’s balsam days a really exciting discovery was made: the presence of water voles along the entire river corridor. Burrows, runs, feeding stations and latrines were abundant, with no sign of their continued page 37

Tales of a Yokel Nana Cuckoo By FCR Esgen
The massive horse chestnut tree seemed so elusive as it stood snugly behind the ancient cob wall of the vicarage. Whether the vicar was in or out, we children knew that it was well worth running the risk for the chance of finding the conker that would beat all-comers in the school yard. Our satchels full of round, brown beauties, we cycled down to the end of the vicarage lane where Nana Cuckoo’s old flint cottage stood. The smell of wood smoke made our nostrils twitch as we walked into her front parlour. We all loved Nana Cuckoo who was the grandmother of my best friend Stephen. Sat, as she was, in her wooden rocker by the open fire that burned all year whatever the weather, her silver hair
tied back in a tight bun, she was what she looked like, a survivor from another age. As children do, we pushed our luck and a week later we were back throwing sticks and anything else we could find at the conkers still left on the vicar’s tree. This time he saw us and candescent with rage flew out of the vicarage intent on capturing at least one of us. We instantly dropped our bounty, tore through a side gate, jumped on our bikes and headed post haste for Nana cuckoo’s. Unfortunately, I hit the only large pothole in the lane and careered over my handlebars hitting also the rough stone of the road with my head. Nana Cuckoo’s face lit up as we children entered her quaint Victorian world. She did what she could to patch me up and sustained us all with tea and crumpets. Over forty years later I still have a scar under my right arm to remind me of Nana Cuckoo and those long-off escapades. Tramping Joe By FCR Esgen
I met Joe recently, sitting on a park bench munching his way through a fourth coconut slice. Joe is one of the last of that honourable band of men we used to refer to as gentlemen of the road. In his mid-seventies, ruddy cheeked and sporting a week’s growth of beard, he has the clearest eyes of any man I have ever seen.
He passes through our town once a year on his way through southern England from Sussex to Cornwall. Joe likes us here in Devon, he says, because we are so friendly. He left London some twenty years ago for what he candidly refer to as the real life; a life of no rent, council tax, electric light, gas or water bills where he is free to eat coconut slices all day.

It seems to me, that as State finances become increasingly stretched and the issue of increased longevity comes to the fore, the government will simply keep looking to increase State pension age. Ted Gosling writes about Sidmouth’s link with tourism and the trains
Sidmouth’s Royal Celeration 1887 at the Royal Glen
The Early Days of Tourism by Ted Gosling Between 1870 and the start of the first World War, Sidmouth enjoyed increasing popularity as a seaside resort. It was quite common in those days for the whole family to go on seaside holidays and stay for a few weeks, taking their servants with them. For long holidays, much of middle class England preferred to take apartments where they were allowed to eat their food in their own rooms. Here and at resorts in Devon, businesses were ready
to cater for these visitors, thus giving the towns a new lease of life. When they arrived at Sidmouth they found a variety of boarding houses and hotels to accommodate their needs. The premier hotel in the town was the Bedford Hotel, built in 1813 as The Shed. Another fine hotel, The Royal York at the eastern end of the seafront was built in 1811 and since that time has been enlarged and modernised. Other hotels include The Royal Glen, The Knowle and the London Hotel.
By the early days of the twentieth century, the two fine hotels belonging to the Sidmouth Hotels Company Ltd, the Victoria and the Fortfield could proudly boast that they were visited by royalty and many other people of distinction. As with so much else in the West Country, it was the railway that provided the catalyst for change. These seaside towns which were the first to be linked by train with the major cities grew the fastest and even although the residents knew that their exclusiveness continued overleaf...

A red letter day - first train in Budleigh Salterton
could not survive the iron road, the rail did bring more prosperity to Sidmouth. The branch line to Sidmouth opened on Monday 6th July 1874. On the first day over a thousand children from Sidmouth, Sidbury and Salcombe Regis headed by the band, marched to witness the arrival of the 1.45pm train and the departure of the 2.45pm. This was followed by tea, games and sports. During the week a celebration was given for 400 aged and poor people with more than a hundred of them given a chance to ride to Sidmouth Junction and back. Like most seaside towns, Sidmouth’s neighbour, Budleigh Salterton, owes much of its develop-

ment to the railway. The branch line from Exmouth ran through Budleigh on its way to Sidmouth Junction. The line which ran for sixty four years was opened on 15th May 1897. The premier hotel in Budleigh Salterton was the Rolle Arms Hotel, a first class family and residential establishment with a spacious lounge and drawing room. The hotel boasted every comfort and on the lawn facing the sea, were tennis courts and a croquet lawn. Then as now, people on holiday were eager to have a keepsake to remind them of their visit and it was during this period that the souvenir industry entered a new

phase. Holidaymakers often paid a visit to E.Culverwell and Sons, a shop in Fore Street, Sidmouth, where they could purchase ashtrays and plates decorated with local views. Shops in Budleigh like Perriams in Fore Street also catered for the holidaymaker. This was also the golden age of picture postcards, for it was in these years that the postcard reached a height of popularity that it was to never exceed. Every holidaymaker sent cards back home and today postcards with early views of Sidmouth and Budleigh Salterton are in much demand. By Ted Gosling.
