Editor’s Letter Welcome to the NEW Budleigh Diary. I can’t quite believe that I am writing this so soon, summer seems to have passed us by very quickly. What a summer it’s been though - sun, sun and more sun, we couldn’t really have asked for more. Now you may be wondering why at the start of this Editor’s Letter and on the cover it says NEW? Well, there’s been a fundamental change to the Budleigh Diary that means every organisation, be it a club, society, charity, business, etc, can get their events into the next issue of the magazine in an easy, transparent way, so that the Budleigh Diary will be exactly that, a diary of all events for the Budleigh Salterton area. For instance, at the start of the events section in this issue, you can see local events in chronological order. This is then followed by East Devon events. How do I get my organisation’s events into the next issue you may ask? It’s extremely easy, just go to the eastdevonhub .co.uk website and login as your organisation and then add your events, it’s that easy. What’s great is that you can get your organisation’s events on the Hub and also in The Budleigh Diary through this

single, easy process. At the last count, there were 78 organisations already registered on the East Devon Hub in the Budleigh, East Budleigh, Yettington and Otterton area. This service is totally free to use and available 24/7. If your organisation isn’t registered, just Google East Devon Hub, then go to the register menu option, fill out the form and submit. We’ll let you know when you’re all set up to add events. After flying through her two years as an apprentice, Charlotte has stayed on with us here and we’ve recently taken on Lauren (our new apprentice). Jack, has a new friend to play with; Alfie is the new four-legged member to the family (right) and is enjoying puppy-life to the max! Don’t forget Daylight Saving Time ends on October 27th, so be sure to wind those clocks back. Wishing you a sunny autumn! J. Ingles Cover picture: All Saints Church, East Budleigh Church by N. Local historian Ted Gosling looks back in time

Devonshire Dialect by Ted Gosling

A

ctors on the large and small screen try in vain to capture the flavour of the Devonshire dialect. They always fail as only Devonians born and bred in the county and brought up on the speech of their forefathers can get their tongues around it. Today, even they can only manage a much watered down version.

During the 1939-45 war years, I left school to commence work in the village of Beer. Listening to many of the old fishermen in Beer in those days was a revelation. I found it difficult to understand them. I also used to visit my grandfather in Sidmouth who lived in a thatched cottage at Bulverton, his neighbours were mostly farm labourers and the exchanges of pleasantries and banter unintelligible to vurriners were made in the everyday speech they had used for generations past, talk which today would sadly be looked upon with amusement.

The Devonshire man is detected in a moment by his pronunciation, not only of the “V” [eve], but by the other vowels “I” [aii] making wine “waayne” and “O” as ou in mourning. He often substitutes “I” for “e” turning steady into stiddy. One of the things that newcomers to the county find strange is the use of the word “to”. We Devonians always tack this onto the end of a continued overleaf

sentence relating to places or positions (see panel below). Another common expression was ‘me handsome’, which was especially used in South Devon and Plymouth. Wat e’n I do ver ee me ansum? - what can I do for you my handsome? Devon people often substitute ‘m’ for ‘n’ at the end of a word, Devon becomes Devm or Dem, heaven becomes hem. They also pronounce ‘f’ as ‘v’ such as vust - first and vew - few. Old farm workers - hay making c1899

There are many thousands of words in the Devonshire dialect list and some of the more popular include:

The late Clement Marten, who was the landlord of my Exeter office, was also the leading authority at the time on the Devonshire dialect and published books on the subject. When I went to visit him at his home in East Budleigh I always enjoyed ‘avinga crack’ with him in our native dialect. Clement Marten ranks along with Henry Baird, whose nom-de-plume was Nathan Hogg and AJ Coles, who was known to thousands who heard him or read his books as Jan Stewer, one of the three people who did much to keep alive the interest in the old speech of Devon.

Cec Hardy’s lighthearted take on life “This will give me something to get my teeth into” I exclaimed, “why are they selling these in October? Surely this produce is in season between Christmas and Easter.” This stroke of luck might well enable me to cobble together an article of 750 odd words to satisfy El Supremo and anyone who might have run out of bathroom reading matter.

A Decade of Drivel by Cec Hardy It had to happen. “What shall I write about this time?” I whined despairingly to the butt of so many of my articles, my long suffering wife. After ten long years of head scratching I was finally bereft of ideas. Perhaps an update on the gerbil situation? No, nothing’s happened since the great escape. How about snippets from my favourite articles, a sort of greatest hits collection? Probably not. “I can’t bore them any more with squirrels, can I?” Even as these words passed my lips I knew it was a rhetorical question. Wife Christine had just returned from her weekly forage at the supermarket. As if by magic she produced a packet of hot cross buns. My eyes lit up as I realised I wouldn’t have to confess to Young Mister Ingles that my creative brain cells were defunct.

OCT to NOV 13

The good lady wife was puzzled as she had bought the buns thinking it was April, but to be fair it was a full moon that night and she had a lot on her plate. I was delighted that I could now mount my ecological free range soapbox and preach against seasonal fruits like strawberries being available all year round and more generally about food miles. I could, but I wouldn’t inflict this upon the reader. Only once in the past decade have I suffered the dreaded writers’ block. I didn’t even have the squirrels to fall back on as for once they were actually doing what they should and seemed to be hibernating. I had to engage a ghost writer; never again, for my charming wife seized the opportunity for some sweet revenge. October is always a difficult time. Once you’ve exhausted the possibilities of Halloween and the far-too-early manifestations of Christmas there’s nothing much to write about. The January issue is easier since different New Year

resolutions can be thought up every year. Among others I’ve covered my resolve to play a recognisable tune on the harmonica (the jury is still out) and our attempts at learning Spanish and French. Two foreign languages may be one too many; confusion can arise, which accounts for the Parisian waiter’s puzzled query “you have not eaten the notebook?” Misuse of Spanish caused hilarity in the photo shop when Christine requested a chicken for her camera (readers should consult the appropriate dictionaries if they can be bothered). Surprisingly I’ve been more successful with Tai Chi. Not only does this take a long time to master (or is it just me?) but it’s not quite the exciting all-action martial art you see in movies. Imagine, if you are old enough, a 78rpm record played at 33. Nonetheless, it suits nicely at my age and after two years of practice I feel much safer walking the mean streets of East Devon knowing I could repel an attacker provided he or she is patient enough to allow me to adopt a suitable defensive posture. These days, however, I rarely venture out into those streets without a large sombrero, sunglasses and a false beard to cover my real one. It pays to be incognito but I’m still accosted by readers, occasionally continued on page 26

any of you, I don’t doubt, know of Escot Park up above Ottery St Mary. There’s a lovely mansion house with grounds that have all manner of activities, particularly for children. continued from page 17 with compliments but more often trivial complaints about my alleged misuse of apostrophy’s or the fact that I never bought Christine the border collie I promised. My first article, in 2003 when the Diary had just 16 inside pages in black and white, was an unpaid trial run to check whether the readership were ready for this sort of thing. It was followed by two others from Chris. With both of us having slightly confusing names, when I began writing regular articles in 2005 I was mistaken for a woman. Luckily I was granted my very own photograph once the glossy 40 page version was born so I was able to prove my masculinity (see reprinted photo from an earlier edition). Readers who know me will be amazed at how little I have aged despite the stress of making up regular articles for your delectation. I wonder when I can expect a long service medal. Maybe even a pay rise? Cec

The Old Vet’nary

Nostalgic happenings on the farm

by Ken Watson

Unexpected Encounters

O

ne of the great joys of veterinary practice in my day was that, owing to the reasonable charges for visits, I was able to see people in their home environment and even to discuss matters close to their heart. In fact if a case was proving difficult to diagnose I would often make a home visit to see the animal in it’s natural home, often without any extra charge. However it could cause embarrassing moments.

You have to remember there was much less crime and so folk did not lock their doors, especially in the countryside. It was my habit to just call out as I walked in the front door and this saved me waiting time which over the course of a day could add up. One such time, in Ottery St. Mary, I walked through the house to the kitchen, whilst calling out. Now the old couple must have been hard of hearing for when I entered the room Mother was stood at the kitchen table having a stand-up wash, stripped to the waist. Then, as I stopped in my tracks, Father appeared from behind his newspaper in the corner and cried out, “Ere what’s a goin’ orn?” I beat a hasty retreat. Quite a different experience occurred when I was called one evening to a calving near Talaton. It was snowing

OCT to NOV 13

he

a storm and I had never been to this farm before. As I passed Escot the snow was banking up and even my old Landrover was finding it hard going, when I saw the faint lights of a farmhouse. Partly to check my way and partly, if I am honest, to meet another human being in this maelstrom of a night I pulled into the yard. I knocked and walked right in. The scene I met has stayed with me all my days. At a large table sat about 10 children, graded roughly down their ages and about to start their supper. Behind them stood their Father, an almost biblical figure in a farmworkers smock. The only lighting came from the log fire and candles and this gave an ethereal setting to the scene. The man set me on my way in a kindly manner with heartfelt good wishes. That house has now been gentrified but I think of that night whenever I pass by. I often used to visit a farm at Goodameavy on Dartmoor. It was run by a very eccentric lady and even by the primitive standards of the moor it was run in a rather casual manner. You had to step over a small stream to enter the kitchen door. Come to think of it I am not sure there was a door at all. Anyway this day I walked through the kitchen and was just about to enter the living room when 3 sheep passed me on

BUDLEIGH DIARY

their way out. I believe one of them even bleated a greeting to me as it passed. A much less pleasant encounter happened one summer evening when I was called away from my evening meal to an emergency at a vicarage near Plymouth. As usual the front door was open so I walked in whilst calling out. I had just reached the foot of the grand staircase in the hall when a woman appeared at the top of the stairs and subjected me to a tirade of abuse for entering her house without permission. It eventually transpired that my client, in his panic, had failed to point out that he lived in a flat at the back of the vicarage. However such was the stream of vituperation that the vicar’s wife aimed at me that before I left I said to her, “Madam, I think you should see somebody!” This proved prophetic because a few weeks later her husband, the vicar, was charged with abusing young children and I learned a great lesson of life, that the outbursts of invective people sometimes let loose are often less about the immediate subject but more about some hidden pressure in their life. Tales of a Yokel

Yarns from the inimitable FCR Esgen fortune on Saturday mornings taking all the neighbours empties back to the corner shop at 3 pence a piece. Even glass jars had their uses and were always pressed into service by my mother for jam making.

RECYCLING How wonderful it is that all of us are now recyclers. How did we ever cope with all that rubbish piling up in are back gardens years ago. Where did we put it all. What about the kitchen waste for instance that we carefully dispose of now in the right coloured box, and then take out to be collected on the right day at the right time, lest we forget that those who put out there waste at the wrong time can be fined. The answer of course is that we didn’t call it waste but compost, or at least that’s what it was after a few months on the compost heap. After which you didn’t need a box at all but a good strong spade to spread it over your garden to grow all those lovely fruit and vegetables that today takes you hours of queuing at the supermarket to buy. Ah, but you may counter, “what about nasty things like glass!” That wasn’t a problem either. Milk bottles were made of glass not plastic anyway so they were naturally recycled and seemed to go on forever. Soft drinks came in large glass bottles too, like the big corona bottles, and sharp eyed children made a

Now how about those other recycling boxes that we cling too in our green fervour. What do we do with all those bits of material for instance that we just chuck into them without a thought. Why not use some of them in that lost art of quilt-making or be thrifty and start darning your old socks like grandma used to do. Unfortunately, we cant sell any odds and ends left anymore to our local rag and bone man for a few coppers, as he didn’t pass the local health and safety regulations and is now just another job-seeker.

PADRAIG I first spotted Padraig in a skip outside our house one morning many years ago. Or a bit of him at least, as he delved into it’s questionable contents with his backside hanging out the end to remind passers by that he was not just an old pair of abandoned legs that someone had discarded and threw out one night when nobody was looking; but in fact a real human being with feelings. The truth was of course that Padraig just couldn’t walk by a skip without sorting its contents and getting

down and dirty with them. As his name might suggest, Padraig had an Irish ancestry and was all the more colourful for it. He lived in my village in a strange old tumbledown cottage with pink roses around the door at the end of pelican lane and made an uncomfortable living as the village odd job man. It wasn’t that the jobs themselves were particularly odd, but that Padraig had odd ways of doing them. It was his custom, for instance, to start a job and then move on to another one and not come back for months. His customers would eventually fight back and try to entice him with offers of free cider and home made pasties. This would work for a while but then he would get drawn off again if someone had a burst water pipe or Mrs Jenkins got her cat Henry stuck up the big horse chestnut tree on the green again. My dealings with Padraig were sporadic, but eventful, as I supplied him with his other great love in life, after the inside of skips, namely crabs. He would eat them with a voracious appetite that never failed to diminish as he got older. One of the last ones I took round to him before he died was a large, fresh caught, hen crab. As soon as I walked in his cottage door he grabbed it and I watched in awe as he set to work on it with a pair of pincers,a giant glint in his eye and crab meat all round his whiskers! FCR Esgen
