GET READY TO Welcome to the first ever issue of our brand new magazine – Glow, by Tropic. We wanted to bring you, our customers, something more than just the products you love – although you’ll find your Tropic favourites in these pages too (plus some glorious new additions) – which is why we’ve created this magazine, filled with articles and stories, to say thank you for all the support you’ve shown us, and to help you glow, both inside and out! When we were in the peak of a nationwide lockdown, it placed many aspects of our daily lives that we took for granted under the microscope – be it sleep, self-care, our careers or even getting ready, and gave them renewed importance as we navigated the new strange world we found ourselves in. It provided us with an opportunity to appreciate how vital, unique and even joyous the smaller parts of life can be, a reflection we don’t want to let go of here at Tropic. Although the Zoom quizzes are a distant memory, we’re dusting off our calendars and the business as usual bustle is returning, there are a few learning curves that we can all remember as we embrace the new normal together. From prioritising our health – both body and mind – to how we can do more to benefit our global community and find joy in the smallest of sentiments, this issue has been lovingly created to celebrate the moments that helped us refresh and reset and to help you feel healthier, greener and more empowered, every day. Whether that’s how you can enjoy a better night’s sleep, feel empowered by your makeup, learn a new skincare technique or discover a product that’s worth investing in if it will make you smile over and over again, we’ve got you. We asked each of our contributors for this issue the question – what makes you feel empowered? Unsurprisingly every answer was very different, proving that empowerment can come from so many different places or people, and often arises when we least expect it. For me it’s our wider Tropic family and how it’s grown, being able to connect with our Ambassadors and the

HQ team in new and inspiring ways every day and developing together that always leaves me feeling empowered. Whatever makes you feel empowered – helps you to hit reset and refresh – I hope you find it somewhere in these pages. So, get ready, get set, Glow!

AWARD WINNING BEAUTY

With 200 prestigious awards and accolades, ranging from our product range to brand ethics and achievements, here are a few of our top award-winning moments from the past few years. Fast Track 100 Outstanding Achievement Award

WINNER: Best Luxury Makeup Brand – The 2020 UK Global Makeup Awards WINNER: Best New Sustainable Makeup Product – Pure Beauty Global Awards 2020 (Colour Palette)

About Us Our Infinite Purpose is to help create a healthier, greener, more empowered world. That’s the first thing you need to know about us, because it influences every decision we make as a brand, from the products we launch and the ingredients we use to our certifications and charity partnerships. It's a big goal, and one we're very proud of, but our beginnings were a little smaller.

Early Inspirations

Our Founder, Susie Ma, drew inspiration for Tropic from two places. The first was her grandma, a medicinal chemist and toxicologist, who taught her that our skin needs feeding nourishing, healthy ingredients just as much as our bodies. The second is from Susie’s upbringing in Cairns, Tropical North Queensland, Australia, where fresh aloe vera plants and exotic fruit trees pretty much grew on her doorstep! This would later have a huge impact on the beauty products Susie would create, and it’s also where we got our name from. WINNER: Hair Care Range – Natural Health International Beauty Awards 2019

Success in a Jam Jar

After moving to London as a teenager, Susie decided to start selling her favourite body scrub recipe to help her mum with the household bills. While most of us were smuggling our favourite snacks into the cinema at age fifteen, Susie poured her first batch of body scrubs into fifty jamjars to sell at Greenwich Market.

While she was studying, Susie devoted nights and weekends to formulating recipes and making products – with her mum’s kitchen quickly turning into a makeshift beauty lab. WINNER: Best Value Skincare Brand – Beauty Shortlist Awards 2020

Building our Foundations You may recognise Susie from when she was on BBC’s The Apprentice back in 2011.

Lord Alan Sugar was so impressed by the products that he invested to become a 50/50 partner, and Tropic moved from Susie’s mum’s kitchen to our first ever Tropic HQ.

4 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

EMPOWERED Open for Business

Susie loved building personal relationships with her customers on market stalls, and that’s one of the main reasons why we launched our Ambassador Selling Model in 2013, with just 400 founding Ambassadors.

Back to the Future

In this issue of Glow, By Tropic we’ve delved into what empowers different people; be it friendship, makeup, financial independence, education, self-care or a good skin day. Empowerment can come from a multitude of sources, and that’s why it forms the final pillar of our Infinite Purpose. We won’t ever stop working to empower more people – and that’s inclusive of everyone. It’s why we launched our charity partnership in 2019 with United World Schools, to help fund education for children living in some of the world's poorest and most remote regions, with every single Tropic purchase.

Tropic has come a long way since Susie started, with us being recognised by The Sunday Times Virgin Atlantic Fast Track 100 as the UK’s fastest growing skincare brand and our award-winning product range expanding to include skincare, body care, hair care, sun care and makeup. Our Ambassador family has grown too, with us now having around 20,000 people who have started their business with us and joined our ever-growing community. Now you’ve got the lowdown, let’s return to our Infinite Purpose – here’s what it means to us.

HEALTHIER

We strive to stay ahead of the curve in natural ingredient research, supercharging our formulations with ingredients such as plant peptides, encapsulated vitamins and plant ceramides. We’re also firm believers that what you put on your skin should be as fresh as possible, which is why we freshly make our products at HQ every day. All of our products are also verified as ‘safe’ by Think Dirty.

It's why we teamed up with Stop Hate UK in 2020, a charity challenging all forms of hate crime and discrimination, by funding their helpline to a region of up to 1 million people. It’s why we have donated to – and will continue to support – The Winnie Mabaso Foundation, who work with children and families impacted by HIV/AIDS in South Africa, and Big Change, a charity in the UK that supports young people and helps them to thrive.

GREENER

We aim to do as much as possible to minimise our environmental impact and create more sustainable options within the beauty industry. For three years running, we’ve proudly been a certified CarbonNeutral® company. What’s more, we’re incredibly proud to be leading the way in the industry by double-offsetting our emissions. We’ve always been dedicated to animal welfare and stand with The Vegan Society and PETA as a 100% cruelty-free and vegan brand, now and always.

And finally, we donated profits from our Pamper Packs during lockdown to support the Trussell Trust, a UK charity that funds a network of food banks providing emergency food and support to people in crisis.

OUR GREEN ROOTS: FROM TROPIC HQ,

to everything we do

Tropic aims to be a force for good beyond beauty, keeping our Infinite Purpose at the heart of everything we do. It not only defines our brand DNA, but guides each and every business decision and product launch. Here are just a few ways we implement our Infinite Purpose at Tropic HQ.

With 1 product sold every 3 seconds it’s important that our beauty is green and clean. All of the energy used on our site is from 100% renewable resources, meaning all of our products – when they’re cooked, packed, wrapped and dispatched – come from sustainable energy. The heat created by the cooking vessels used to make Tropic products is reused and diverted to heat other areas of the office, doubling down on our eco energy.

Each formulation is created in Tropic’s Innovation Lab at HQ, harnessing the best in green skincare science. For freshness, products are made on-site.

6 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

Our HQ is home to over 200 plants, which are watered from a supply of rain runoff. In fact, all of the numerous water saving initiatives that we’ve implemented at HQ save over half a million litres of water a year collectively.

In 2019 at our HQ we were completely landfill free, recycling over 95 tonnes of rubbish, and we're on track to do the same in 2020.

We want to conserve our oceans and the marine life that lives there, which is why our entire sunscreen range is Protect Land + Sea certified, making it completely reef-safe.

Since becoming a CarbonNetural® certified company, we delivered over $2 million worth of value to households, infrastructure and biodiversity through double offsetting our carbon emissions. Through this initiative, we’ve funded conservation work in the Amazon Rainforest and helped to protect 65,000 hectares of forest from unsustainable palm oil conversion in Indonesia.

Tropic’s entire makeup and sun care ranges comprise refillable, recyclable or returnable (for free) products. We’re also helping our customers to live a lower impact lifestyle, with a packaging returns initiative which is available for many of our products. Our game-changing Colour Palette is also completely refillable, minimising waste from your beauty routine.

Its innovative design has prevented over 9.1 tonnes of plastic waste from being generated, when compared to our previous makeup collection.

We’ve been Ethically Accredited for 3 years and are independently endorsed by the Ethical Company Organisation, with a score of 92/100 which covers a wide range of criteria. This includes animal welfare, human rights and the environment.

GROOMING

Game

Although our skincare products can be used by everyone, we’ve created a range of products that are specifically tailored to male skin.

What’s the difference, we hear you ask? Well, generally male skin is thicker, it’s far more oily, they have larger pores and the skin itself ages at a different rate to female skin. • Men have more active sebaceous glands, and therefore more pores, than women. Both the glands and pores also tend to be larger on men than women. • Adult males are less prone to dry skin than adult females. • Regular shaving tends to mean that male skin can be more stressed and disrupted than female skin. Specially formulated for skin that’s sebum-rich, has visible pores and is generally oily (or for anyone who shaves) these products are designed with men in mind. However, they can be used on anyone with an oily or non-dry complexion. NEW

A CLEAN, GREEN,

Skincare Machine

The tale of our Tamanu Balm, from nut to pot . . .

The Seed of an Idea

There’s a lot of heart packed into this green all-in-one skincare saviour. The initial idea came to our Founder, Susie Ma, after one of our Ambassadors told Susie that she had a scar on her face from a car accident when she was younger. Susie wanted to create a product that could help with skin repair and reduce the appearance of scarring, and so the hunt for powerful plant ingredients began.

Going Green

Indigenous to the islands of French Polynesia, the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, is a little-known evergreen tree called the tamanu tree. From this tree grow small, sweet-smelling white flowers which produce fleshy fruit the size of an apricot, and it’s within this small fruit that the tamanu tree stores its skin-saving secret. Inside is a nut, which can be pressed to make tamanu oil, an ingredient that’s been used by communities in the Pacific and Polynesian islands for centuries, locally referred to as ‘green gold’. This green oil earned its second name because of its vast skin benefits, possessing anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and antioxidant properties – A’s across the board basically. It also promotes the formation of new skin tissue, and it’s been used as a natural remedy for a whole host of skin ailments in the past. Most of all, these regenerative qualities made it perfect for the balm Susie wanted to create, because it helps to reduce the appearance of scarring.

TRIED AND

Tested

In an independent external study, using a microscopic HD video, Tamanu Balm was tested for the speed in which it repairs wounded and scratched skin on a cellular level. On the skin cells where Tamanu Balm had been applied, the gaps in cells caused by the scratch came together to heal within 37 hours. The skin cells without Tamanu Balm didn’t fully heal during this time, and were still not healed when the study ended after 48 hours. This exciting study shows that Tamanu Balm is a true skin saviour! 32 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

In The Lab

When Susie was in the lab working on the formulation for Tamanu Balm, she was initially concerned about the green hue and distinct herbal scent from the tamanu oil, but it turned out to be something that makes this skin-nourishing balm uniquely Tropic. We decided to sustainably source our tamanu oil from Madagascar, a melting pot of effective tropical ingredients, where the nuts are gathered by hand, manually air dried and then pressed to harvest the highest quality oil. Alongside tamanu oil’s regenerative abilities, Susie decided to add other ingredients such as raspberry and blackcurrant seed oils to deliver further antioxidant benefits and protect against pollution and free radicals, adding shea and cupuaçu butters to soothe and promote smoother, more supple skin. Not only was the final formulation effective at reducing visible scarring, but it also benefits minor skin scrapes and itchy bug bites too.

Hot To Pot

Once Susie was happy with the formulation, in-house production could begin and the product was launched. Our Tamanu Balm – both the mini and the full-sized version – joined the Tropic range back in 2014, but it’s still freshly made and poured at Tropic HQ today. Once the balm is made, it’s then poured by hand into pots. It has to be heated first using special heat plates, so it’s liquid enough to pour, and then it’s poured into the pots using a funnel. Once poured, it’s then left to cool and set – returning back to the soothing balmy texture – before heading out the door to our customers. This process might sound fiddly, but it’s the best way to ensure the ingredients are as fresh and potent as possible, maintaining the easy-to-apply balmy texture. As with all of our products, our Tamanu Balm is a labour of love. Our Tamanu Balm has been tested for babies over six months, making it the perfect skincare saviour for the whole family!

A GOOD

Skinfluence

We asked Tropic Founder and CEO, Susie Ma, her top tips for complexion perfection _ notepads at the ready, everyone! POWER POWDER

Our cleansing powder Clear Skies has transformed my complexion and my evening cleansing routine. Once I've steamed and cleansed my face with Smoothing Cleanser and a Bamboo Face Cloth, I then add water to Clear Skies and massage it into any clogged pores on my T-zone for at least a minute as a secondary cleanse. Then, after I've cleansed, I splash cold water on my face ten times to cool and tighten the skin. Voilá, my skin feels super clean and smooth.

SNOOZE CONTROL

There’s a reason it’s called beauty sleep! My skin always looks its best when I’m well-rested and have had my eight+ hours of undisturbed sleep. This is the starting point for great skin; it doesn’t matter what you put on your face if you’re not sleeping enough.

HELLO HYDRATION

Keeping skin hydrated is the key to that dewy, youthful glow we all strive for. I try to keep my skin hydrated inside and out by drinking lots of water, applying ingredients like hyaluronic acid, avoiding prolonged hot water on my face and exfoliating too rigorously. Our Vitamin Toner and Rainforest Dew serum are my go-to products for when my skin needs a good drink of hydration!

FACE TIME

I’m a big fan of an at-home facial massage, and it’s something I regularly try to make part of my skincare routine, even if it’s just two minutes. I use either of our oils – Super Greens or Elixir – and massage them into my face, neck and décolletage to help stimulate lymphatic drainage and blood circulation. Trust me, it works, that’s why your skin looks so good after stepping out of a facial.

PROBIOTIC LIKE A PRO

I take probiotics every day and eat fermented foods like kimchi regularly. Research has shown that because our gut and skin are our primary interface with the external environment, both are uniquely related in purpose and function. So, a healthy gut equals healthy skin!

PRESS TO IMPRESS

Most of us who are skincare savvy have a serum as part of our daily routine, but the way we apply it impacts its results. It’s tempting to rub serums into skin, like an oil or moisturiser, but try gently pressing instead for optimal absorption of all those nourishing ingredients.

DON’T DRY

I try not to towel dry my face to keep moisture on my skin for as long as possible! After cleansing, I simply let my skin air dry as I brush my teeth, or I gently pat my face until dry. Try this for noticeably more hydrated skin!

KEEP IT CLEAN

Regularly cleaning any tools that come into contact with your face is essential for good skin health – nobody wants bacteria from their bathroom or makeup bag on their skin! I always clean my Bamboo Face Cloth with our Signature Hand Wash before I use it, and clean my makeup brushes regularly too.

I’m a big fan of an at-home facial massage, and it’s something I regularly try to make part of my skincare routine, even if it’s just two minutes. AW2020 | ISSUE 1 | GLOW | 33

SUB-ZERO

Heroes

When temperatures drop, there are certain ingredients in our skincare routines that should be on the up. By Elizabeth Kennedy

There’s no denying that we Brits are obsessed with summer. We draw it out as long as possible, allowing its presence to impact plans, conversations and moods. From the shy whispers of sunshine on our first jumper-free day in April, all the way up to the final unexpected heatwave of September. It’s an ironic trait, considering we’re world-renowned for having summers that are – at the best of times – unpredictable. Perhaps that’s exactly why though. A British summer is like the first sip of your favourite drink; delicious, tantalising and it always leaves you wanting more. We enjoy our first taste of heat, the kind that makes you dig out last year’s swimwear (only to wonder why you no longer have a set that matches) and has you pondering whether open water swimming really is for you after all. However, as quickly as it arrives, it’s gone, leaving us longing for that euphoric feeling of warmth for the next few months. Even the sun shyers, the hat wearers and garden grumblers can't deny that it brings a certain electric quality to the country’s mood. It’s a seasonal hopefulness that leaves us feeling a little sad when it’s over. When pumpkins start piling up in supermarket aisles, the promise of a long, hazy summer – reminiscent of the rosey, ice lolly-coated school holidays of childhood – dances drearily out of reach for another long winter. Some of us feel a jolt of excitement at the prospect of being able to pile on more than two layers, the warming sensation of a Pumpkin Spice Latté (again with the pumpkins) and the prospect of the holy grail of winter wishes – a white Christmas. Others hunker down, stockpile on vitamin D tablets and wonder why humans haven’t evolved to join their fellow mammalian friends in the process of hibernation. I personally sit very much in the second camp. That being said, what does make the winter more bearable is knowing that we don’t have to sacrifice our healthy skin to its icy clutches, as long as we’re supplementing our skincare routines with as much nourishing goodness as possible. So, whether you’re a fellow cold-phobe like me or you relish the prospect of ice skating and chilly walks – but still want to fortify your skin’s defences – we’ve picked out five ingredients to help boost your complexion as temperatures start to drop.

Aloe Vera

This refreshing plant extract is one we often associate with summer, with its cooling properties making it an effective addition to aftersun and sun care products. However, its hydrating, antioxidant and soothing abilities have earned it a spot on our list of winter-proof ingredients as well. Nina Goad, British Association of Dermatologists, notes that “prolonged wet weather can strip the skin’s barrier function” (ScienceDaily). This can lead to greater transepidermal water loss, and so ingredients such as aloe vera that work to rehydrate the skin are essential in maintaining that oh-so-coveted bounce. 34 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

Rosehip Oil

First of all, this golden oil looks like summer in a bottle, making it a perfect pick-me-up for when the sun sets just a few hours after lunchtime. It’s extracted from rosehip seeds, and comes packed full of omega oils, to moisturise and soothe skin, and antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E, to brighten and protect in equal measure. It’s also effective at soothing the symptoms of eczema and psoriasis, two conditions the winter can play havoc with due to a more rapid change in temperature between inside and outside (National Eczema Association).

Coconut Oil

A rich source of fatty acids, coconut oil has occlusive benefits for our skin and traps moisture – something we need more of in cooler temperatures. “Winter poses a special problem because humidity is low both outdoors and indoors, and the water content of the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) tends to reflect the level of humidity around it” (Harvard Medical School). That’s why we often experience dryness or the ‘winter itch’ during long periods of cold temperatures. Coconut oil assists our epidermis by reducing transepidermal water loss to keep our skin nice and hydrated (National Center For Biotechnology Information).

Vitamin E

This ingredient has been around in skincare for a while, but there’s a reason it’s stood the test of time. If we’re being really technical, the term vitamin E actually refers to a group of oil-soluble antioxidants, but tocopherol is the variety you’re likely to see in skincare products. Cold air can leave our skin feeling irritated and dry, but vitamin E is a natural anti-inflammatory and works hard to soothe and calm our skin (Oregon State University). Its antioxidant benefits are also even more of a necessity in winter, as cold air has been shown to lead to higher pollution levels (Accu Weather). Vitamin E works to protect our skin from these increased pollution levels and free radicals – which scavenge electrons from atoms in our skin – by providing an extra electron and preventing damage.

Vitamin C

Like vitamin E, vitamin C also has powerful antioxidant benefits. Aside from its ability to protect our skin from free radical and pollution damage, there are a fair few reasons why this ingredient has become a beauty buzzword and made its way onto our list of sub-zero heroes. Skin can look duller during the winter, caused by the dryness and moisture-loss we’ve already talked about, but vitamin C has been proven to effectively brighten and even skin tone (Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology), so your skin keeps on glowing strong!

inning workout moves to leave your face feeling ace. By Elizabeth Kennedy

Whether you’re a dedicated yogi, HIIT enthusiast or nothing gets you more excited than the prospect of a ten mile run (or you’re the elite among us who loves all three), you might find there’s one very important part of your body that you’ve been neglecting in your weekly workout regime – your face! With over forty muscles – a hefty number when you consider there are approximately 650 muscles in our bodies overall – our faces can greatly benefit from exercise and training, especially when a lot of these facial muscles are rarely used in everyday life. The concept of facial workouts isn’t a new one, with dermatologists and facialists alike factoring them into their treatments for decades, but the at-home facial workout started to take the beauty mainstream by storm last year. With different workout moves to tone, reduce fine lines, increase blood circulation, release muscle tension and more, there’s a whole menu to choose from when it comes to putting our faces through their paces. But how do we know if we’re doing them right, and – more importantly – do they actually work? Well, as with all workouts, if you want results the trick is consistency. Just like doing one run won’t make you the next Dina Asher-Smith (although realistically no amount of running is going to do that, but a girl can dream) one facial workout isn’t going to give you your perfect visage. Seeing as we all know that workouts are easier to stick to when they’re efficient, quick and workable around our busy schedules, the same should go for keeping our face fit, right? That’s why we asked aesthetics doctor, Dr Amel Ibrahim, for her top facial exercises that can be repeated with ease on a weekly basis, wherever you are. Remember, just as you would in the gym, be sure to count those reps!

We asked Elizabeth what makes her feel empowered. Spending time with all of the incredible women in my life who challenge me, support me and most of all, make me laugh (a lot).

36 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

To reduce any puffiness in the neck area and make your neck appear more refined, Dr Ibrahim has two workout moves to try.

• Use your index or ring finger (whichever is more comfortable) on both sides and you’re essentially going to make a ‘u’ shape underneath each eye.

• Start by tilting your head up to raise your chin, then push the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth. • Hold your tongue there for two or three seconds, then relax. • Repeat this ten times.

• Repeat this movement ten times per eye.

Step 1: Neck in Check

Repeating this action works to tighten the muscles under your jaw, helping to reduce the appearance of a double chin and make the neck look more taut over time. Once you’ve done your ten repetitions, you can move onto the massage. You can use your hands or a Gua Sha tool for this bit, but you’ll need a facial oil or a moisturiser – we recommend our Super Greens or Elixir. • Once again, flex your neck by raising your chin. • Apply a few drops of oil or moisturiser to the neck area. • Starting from the edge of your jawline with your fingertips or Gua Sha, move in firm strokes down towards your chest on either side of your neck. • Repeat this ten times. This action helps with lymphatic drainage, dislodges any excess fluid and also stimulates blood circulation to the skin.

Step 2: Eyes on the Prize

When it comes to the eye area, Dr Ibrahim cautions that the skin here is incredibly delicate, so be careful not to tug excessively during this workout, which is designed to help reduce the appearance of puffiness around the eyes. The only kit you’ll need is your fingertips and an eye cream or serum.

• Start where your brow bone begins, then gently move downwards until you reach the cheeks and then curve upwards to your outer eye and brow bone.

Step 3: Power Pout

More defined and volumised lips? Yes please. Dr Ibrahim showed us an equipment-free workout to work the orbicularis oris muscle, which is the one that forms the bulk of the lips.

Step 1

• Start with a smile.

• As you smile, purse your lips together.

• Then blow out some air through your lips. • Repeat ten times.

With this move, always smile first. This stops you from pushing your lips forward – in a similar motion to drinking from a bottle – and avoids forming any vertical lines.

Step 4: Cheek Cardio

When it comes to achieving a fuller, more youthful-looking face, Dr Ibrahim advises that the cheeks are where it’s at. Working your cheek muscles regularly increases them in size to lift the middle and lower face. Once again you’ll need a moisturiser or facial oil for this one. Apply your moisturiser or facial oil. • Take your ring and middle finger on each hand, and use them to move along your cheekbones on both sides of the face. • Start at the tip of your ear lobe and then use repeated gentle, upwards flicking motions as you move inwards to the nose.

Step 2

Step 3

• Repeat this ten times on each side.

If you have a Tropic Eye Work, you could use its cooling tip to perform this workout too.

Step 4

hy curating and investing in your skincare regime merits the same attention as your wardrobe. By Jan Masters Don’t get me wrong. I’ve always loved fashion. The out-there runway shows, the tucked-away vintage stores, the impulse-buy bargains. I lap up costume dramas (for the costumes) and fashion exhibitions to find out who wore what when. I’ve mixed. I’ve matched. And made a few brave statements that have earned satisfying compliments. But I’ve long kept in mind one thing. No matter how great my outfit might be, what people tend to remember is if I looked well. More precisely, whether I was fresh of face or drained and tired. Whether there was lightness in my spirit or heaviness in my heart. The rest is window dressing. Your skin, then, is equivalent to the most individual item of clothing you possess, and more literally, the one you never take off. So it’s a no-brainer to treat it with respect. After all, it’s part of your body’s first line of defence against infection. Keeps you warm. Cools you down. Performs a zillion processes 24/7, while cushioning you against life’s hard knocks. But while investing in skincare makes sense, this doesn’t mean rushing to the most expensive maybe-miracle in a jar. It’s about finding products that deliver results you can appreciate, with textures and scents you enjoy. Just as fashion’s concept of calculating ‘cost per wear’ and ‘cost per compliment’ can indicate return on investment, so can 38 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

considering how many applications your skincare serves up and how many “you look well’s” you receive. (Note: saying it to yourself counts as well.) The fashion analogy extends to the idea of creating a skincare ‘wardrobe’, starting with the three S’s: the staples, the specials and the seasonals. The staples are like your jeans, jackets and white Ts, so think cleansers, toners and moisturisers. The specials, such as smart pieces and party numbers, are the serums and masks. The seasonals (warm jumpers, light cottons) are products that you might toggle between depending on conditions, from rich balms and oils to cooling formulations. But the value of skincare doesn’t end there. The daily ritual can be almost meditative, something calming you can rely on, regardless of the madness swirling around you. Those mirror moments offer an opportunity to both prep for the day and reflect on the day – like having a conversation with yourself. I was reminded of this truth during the summer. Our next door neighbour throughout my childhood always looked beautiful in an understated way. Gaye had red hair. Clear skin. Was softly spoken and kind to everyone. She had three sons and lived a long, elegant life before she recently passed away. In her eulogy, we learned she played cricket at club level. She worked in the cosmetics halls of London and Surrey stores. She was always telling her six

Yet somehow it didn’t seem out of place because for Gaye, her passion for skincare and makeup wasn’t about vanity. It was shorthand for encouraging self-care and the part it can play in raising self-esteem. The fact she always looked so immaculate, whether she was partying or pitching up at the crease, was her way of demonstrating not just respect for herself, but for the occasion and others. Now, more than ever, the value of your skincare also relates to choosing a brand whose ethos resonates with you – one that aligns with your evolving lifestyle. Just as we’re seeing the error of our unethical ways in fashion, so too are we demanding social responsibility from beauty brands. We want ingredients that aren’t likely to irritate or harm our health or the environment – and given the nowenormous interest in the food we put into our bodies, it follows that we’re caring more about what we’re putting onto our skin too.

We asked Jan what makes her feel empowered.

Looking at a map of the world and remembering wild places I have had the privilege of experiencing, so far away, yet always so close to my heart.

granddaughters to “cleanse, tone and moisturise” which, let’s be honest, isn’t a lesson you expect to learn at a funeral.

However, what one brand means by ‘clean’, ‘green’ or ‘natural’ may differ from another. Being invested in interpreting the buzzwords might mean scrutinising a brand’s environmental credentials – such as carbon neutral certification – how much (or rather, how little) waste it sends to landfill and whether it offers recyclable, biodegradable or refillable packaging. And to find a cruelty-free brand, you’ll be checking out adherence to programmes such as Leaping Bunny (crueltyfreeinternational.org), as well as registration with organisations such as PETA and The Vegan Society. If skincare with plant-based ingredients is a core value, it’s good to know products can be innovative and effective. For instance, Kalahari melon seed oil (a nod to Tropic’s Eye Dream) is rich in skin-loving essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Not only that, this drought-resistant crop brings positive ecological, economic and social advantages to where it’s cultivated. Be aware, though, that being natural doesn’t automatically bestow an unassailable halo. If you grow and harvest a whole plant, simply to obtain a tiny extract, or cultivate an in-demand natural raw material that escalates deforestation, that’s clearly failing on the sustainability front, which is why sometimes, creating a nature-identical ingredient in a lab can also be an eco-conscious route. The bottom line is that it has become incumbent upon brands that benefit from the world’s abundant and biodiverse areas to demonstrate an awareness that these habitats need protecting and get behind projects that are committed to that aim, while ensuring the local communities are supported in sustainable agriculture, with fairer access to education. When knowledge of conservation is converted to meaningful contribution, that’s when the value of skincare multiplies and radiates – when beauty really does become more than skin deep.

NOTES FOR THE

hy insomnia is a sleepless battle you can – and will – eventually win. By Inge van Lotringen

More than a third of British adults class themselves as insomniacs, two thirds complain of disrupted sleep, and almost a quarter get no more than five hours a night (Aviva).

faster than sleep deprivation itself. But if you don’t prioritise your sleep, you end up caught in a downward spiral of continuously running on empty – until there’s nothing left.

Not so long ago, a habitual lack of sleep was a marker of ambition and success. Margaret Thatcher stated that “sleep is for wimps”, getting by on four hours a night. Bill Clinton, five. Prince, the rock star, just did cat naps.

After a lifetime of sleeping like the proverbial rock, I had insomnia for three lost years of my life before escaping its clutches. The stress and worry of not sleeping are crippling. However, as someone who’s been there and done that, I also need to hear (because it’s true) that the body can cope with a lot. Not only can it be overcome, but the effects of a period of bad sleep can be entirely extinguished.

Today, even with insomnia figures soaring, there are still plenty of people with a gung-ho approach to getting their eight hours’ kip, figuring there are more important things to be done to make for a life well lived. There aren’t, though.

Sleep, Glorious Sleep

Twenty years of scientific sleep research has taught us that quality sleep is more important for our physical and mental health than diet and exercise. A lack of it has major causal links to poor immunity, obesity, heart disease and diabetes (NHS). It can set off inflammatory skin conditions such as acne and rosacea. All the while, we’re busy un-learning how to sleep as a society altogether, caught in a web of sleep-disturbing blue light from our devices, the relentless social media feedback loop and a real world that is getting increasingly disconcerting and unpredictable. In the short term, chronic lack of sleep deprives the brain of its opportunity to process and recuperate, so it slows down your body and mental functions. Initially, you will run on the adrenalin your body is pumping out in a bid to keep you ticking over, but this exhausts your systems even 58 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

So, let’s focus on beating sleeplessness: how to nip it in the bud, how to handle a bout of it and how to free yourself from it if it dares to take over your life.

You find yourself exhausted but wired all night, as your brain throws anything it can (delusional thoughts, irrational fears, panic attacks) at you to keep you awake. Nipping sleeplessness in the bud really is a matter of ‘sleep hygiene’; putting in place all the stuff that helps you sleep well, and eliminating what doesn’t. The things I know make a difference are blackout curtains (you don’t want to notice the light changing), industrialstrength ear buds (BioEars are the best) and a total absence of blue light devices (TVs, phones, tablets) in the bedroom. Developing a self-care ritual that heralds the end of the day and the start of a peaceful night has also been proven to put your mind in the right place for sleep.

Try a Self-Care Spritz

Don’t Panic

It’s why Susie Ma added her So Sleepy Pillow Mist to Tropic’s product arsenal.

My most important piece of advice at this stage is: don’t panic. A period of bad sleep won’t hurt you. Obsessing over it, though, can send you into a tailspin. I know because it did for me. Very soon, the fear of not sleeping becomes the main reason you can’t sleep. The brain learns to associate sleep with panic, identifying it as something to be avoided.

“Lavender calms and relaxes bees, working as a natural sedative, so they stick around and pollinate for longer,” she says. “No wonder it makes us sleepy. Rose geranium is mood balancing, rosewood grounding. Chamomile just chills you out. Eucalyptus clears the mind and uplifts – and I associate it with happy childhood memories.”

Sleeplessness can be set off by any shock to the system, however minor. I’ve heard stories of people not sleeping for years after being scared by a mouse in the house, or having been upset by being stuck on a boat for a week with the wrong pillow. Even a single sleepless night is upsetting; it never makes sense and leaves you feeling out of control.

“I love sleep so much,” she says, “I want everyone to know the joy and importance of it. But in talking to our Ambassadors, and seeing my mum struggle with menopause-related sleeplessness, I realised sleep doesn’t always come easy. So I created So Sleepy.” An alcohol-free, personal blend of essential oils, it’s based on Susie’s research and personal experience.

In a clinical study using the London Sleep Centre scoring pattern, it was found the mist can improve disrupted sleep by a ‘highly significant’ 33 per cent after just seven days of use. So a few spritzes before you go to bed, maybe accompanied by a good book to take your mind off the day, are a no-brainer. A TIP FOR TIRED MINDS: If you wake in the night and struggle to nod off again, don’t try to ‘knock yourself out’ with more of the mist. You want your brain to associate it with a calming pre-bed ritual, not the inevitable panic you feel at 4am when you can’t sleep.

Steady on Back to Sleep

And what if you already suffer from chronic sleep deprivation? The trick here is to not give up. There is a way out, but it’s different for everyone.

Keep at it; we all have different body chemistry and different life circumstances, so allow yourself time and patience to look for your solution. I found it – and so will you.

We asked Inge what makes her feel empowered.

Some things should be standard-issue: apart from self-care and sleep hygiene, I urge every insomniac to get into exercise (just brisk walks will drain your brain of worry) and some form of mindfulness like yoga or meditation. Both give a sense of control and balance, even if everything around you seems to fall apart. While they can’t put you to sleep, they will help you cope much better on the road back to slumber. Seek help – your GP can give you a host of things to try so don’t let yourself be fobbed off with a single suggestion or tablet. Gentle touch and attention are a great help – I found solace in cranial osteopathy and reflexology. Some people benefit from talk therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). There are apps to try, and sleep courses.

Exercise makes me feel in control of my body and mind – I find that really empowering.

BUYING BUTTER BETTER:

One Shea at a Time By Florence Reeves-White

60 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

Shea butter is oiling up its own chain of supply and fortifying the fields in which it grew, anointing the planet and its people with a more cohesive, conscious future. But, how does using shea mean showing up for women and wildlife in Western Africa? Sourcing ingredients in an environmentally-conscious capacity is what we’re all about at Tropic. Tales of tending to the needs of local wildlife; the knowledge that we have enhanced someone’s experience on earth; or bolstering the economies of remote or under-resourced communities, are all primary motivations for doing things the way we do. We want to reach into the crevices of mother earth’s cracked skin, tenderly paving the way for a more solid, steadfast future for anyone who paces the planes of her face.

Who is Shea?

From caressing the complexions of ancient Egyptian royalty to cushioning the pockets of some of the poorest African communities, shea butter has been bettering lives for thousands of years. It has the same chemical makeup as sebum, thus effortlessly mimicking the body’s own natural hair and skin lubricant, while also stimulating the production of collagen and elastin in our cells. While improving skin health may seem – on the surface – why we love shea here at Tropic, the merits of shea tree harvesting take root right at the heart of our ethical epidermis. The Shea Belt stretches from the far reaches of Senegal to the parched lips of the Sahara Desert, buckling over Ghana, Nigeria and Guinea as it goes. Although shea grows successfully in

the West, it’s unique in its prosperity – this land typically constitutes harsh, dry savannah which is almost entirely undeveloped. It’s populated by some of the poorest people in Africa, for whom a crop of shea kernels can mean the difference between being dependent and being free.

The Fight for Fair Trade

By endeavouring to engage with responsible suppliers, Tropic has built a relationship with AAK, for whom sustainable sourcing is at their core. The Kolo Nafaso programme – developed and run by AAK – is a direct purchasing scheme that aims to support women wild-harvesting shea kernels across Western Africa. Literally translated, Kolo Nafaso means ‘house of benefits of shea kernels’. The programme – which has over 30,000 women enrolled – initially launched in Burkina Faso in 2009 and now spans across multiple countries, including Burkina Faso, Ghana, the Ivory Coast and most recently Nigeria. The overwhelming responsibilities and fluctuations in resources for women in these countries often serve to knock them off balance. Due to the seasonal nature of shea harvests they spend months of their year tirelessly working to provide for their families, and despite an unfaltering work ethic and laborious hours, set-backs can render hard work fruitless. Pre-financing initiatives offered through the Kolo Nafaso programme erect a pillar of financial stability, so these women can safely prop themselves up during precarious periods. The initiative empowers women with leverage to negotiate their terms and ensures that the nuts can be sold for a fair price, without a nasty leap of faith into a pit of potential cash flow problems.

A Word on the Wildlife

Shea trees are an essential part of the ecosystem in Western Africa and help to protect from natural environmental processes such as desertification (fertile

land becoming desert). By buying Tropic products containing shea butter (hat tip to the glorious Eye Dream) you're helping to improve life on the Shea Belt. As far as sustainability is concerned, the shea industry plays an important role in helping to maintain a healthy landscape. The agroforestry in place encourages more biodiversity than simply using farmland to grow single crops for hectares at a time. When local farmers clear land to plant other crops in this way, or when they forage for firewood, they will leave the shea tree standing and unharmed, because they know they can use the shea fruit, not just for their own household needs but also to generate additional income for the family. By sparing these trees, the villagers are protecting the land against desertification and lessening the impact of land-clearing on the ecosphere. Because the shea trees can contribute to local economies, governments, too, are recognising their importance. In many places, there are now laws against cutting them down. Shea harvesting provides jobs and income, bolstering the communities that collect the fruit and remedying the rough environment of the surrounding land. So, next time you’re thanking mother nature for this nuttily nutritious skin snack, be sure to dish out a dollop of appreciation for the stabilising network of the Kolo Nafaso community.* Between the wisdom and graft of the local women and the purchasing power of the pounds in your pocket, lies an expanse of opportunity for us to futureproof life on the Shea Belt – and we’re only just getting started. To find out more about the work of AAK and their Kolo Nafaso programme in Burkina Faso, please visit their website. *All Tropic products using ‘Lipex Sheasoft™ TR’ are bought sustainably through the Kolo Nafaso programme initiated by AAK.

TEACH THE UNREACHED

The value of education weighs heavy in many of our pockets, but going to school means more than just punctuation and equations – it’s the formula for the freedom to choose. By Florence Reeves-White What did school mean to you? The feeling of your friends rallying around you with reassuring touches and warm, gleeful grins when you said something funny? The golden hue of relief and pride when you’d score a goal, or manage a nifty catch on the playground? One person giggling at the teacher in class, and the whole room erupting with the unstoppable, blissful roar of a gaggle of giddy children? Wet play and hopscotch and fizzy drinks at school discos? Questionable rice pudding on plastic trays? The “we’ll never live this down” array of costumes in school performances, or playing the recorder (really badly) in your bedroom? Although school isn’t the same for everyone, the universal importance of basic primary education is simply undeniable. If you can remember sitting in a classroom, moaning about a teacher or yawning through a lesson, you’re fortunately not among the 62 million children in the world who don’t get the chance to go to school (unitedworldschools.org). Not everyone without an education is living in poverty, but many of the poorest, most vulnerable and remote communities – while distinguishable by a rich diversity of culture and characteristics – have insufficient access to education as their binding common thread. Armed with this knowledge, the Tropic family decided to fight for the right for every child to go to school. Here, our beautiful relationship with United World Schools (UWS) was born. Through this partnership, money from every order – no matter how small – goes towards running and resourcing schools in the world’s most remote regions, as well as building new ones and maintaining them for future generations to come. Since the launch of this incredible initiative – from September 2019 to August 2020 (time of writing) – together we have funded over 1.5 million days of education. That equates to a year's worth of school days for 8,000 children. Our first school to be fully-funded by our charity partnership has been built in the remote fishing village Ta Lart Thmey in North East Cambodia, as part of our joint mission with UWS to empower and teach the unreached. The village has a population of 350 and as the nearest school was previously a three-and-a-half hour walk away, less than 10 per cent of this community can read or write. 62 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

The support UWS has received from the whole Tropic family has meant that in less than one year, we’ve been able to educate over 8,000 children and support them in discovering their potential! Tim Howarth | Chief Executive, United World Schools

However, thanks to our customers and Ambassadors, every child in the village now has access to primary education. Their new school has working toilets, fresh water, electricity, a library, three classrooms and supplies of toys and stationery too – the first of these amenities that not only the children of Ta Lart Thmey, but their elders have ever had access to. Our partnership is one of our proudest achievements, as we not only value the importance of an education, but the significance of good teachers as dedicated, stable attachment figures during such formative years. In her TED Talk, Rita Pierson – a teacher for more than 40 years – shares a pertinent pearl of wisdom. She says that “every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be.” This will often be a parent or guardian, an older sibling or a family friend, but in families for whom life isn’t easy, for those who sit precariously on the poverty line, circumstance doesn’t always afford the luxury of freedom to invest in championing a child’s success. In walk the teachers. In a world where time and energy are two of our most valuable commodities, let’s direct such resources to the next generation. The effects of nurturing a child with such simple means has proven time and time again to help them learn – about living compassionately, harmoniously and self-reflectively. Knowledge and understanding may take root in the folds of a child’s mind, but they need love and support and safety to blossom. A child born to an educated mother is 50 per cent more likely to survive past the age of five and twice as likely to attend school (UNESCO). Education is so much more than just knowledge and intelligence, it’s the opportunity to be more. Although it may not, in the end, have afforded you any talent to showcase on that recorder, or endowed you with a ferocious thirst for knowledge of space or socialism or assonance (give it a Google) – your time at school is always gently tinkling away on the piano of your consciousness. Your life could be being played out in a different tune, at a different tempo, to a different beat, had you not received your starting note from education. School for children in remote communities probably won’t mean hopscotch and recorders and rice pudding, but it will still mean laughter, it will still mean friendship, it will still mean the freedom to choose the rhythm of their own future.

A Safe Haven

You don't need a wealth of resources to help people, often the biggest differences are made when one person displays a random act of kindness. By Connor Bolton The story of The Winnie Mabaso Foundation started when Winnie Mabaso herself, a retired auxiliary nurse, offered soup to a few of the neighbourhood children twice a day. The group was originally called Zenzele – a Zulu word that means ‘do it yourself’. She stood at her garden gate to serve children, creating a line of people waiting for soup that stretched all the way down the street.

abused, abandoned and orphaned girls, a preschool for underprivileged children, a library, a sewing school, a gardening project, a granny club and a feeding station. In early 2017, one of our Tropic Ambassadors got in touch with us about supporting the foundation. We agreed that it aligned perfectly with Tropic's values around empowering people, and we’re so proud to have become part of their story. Fast forward to today and the changes have been immeasurable. Since partnering with The Winnie Mabaso Foundation – with thanks to the incredible generosity of our Ambassadors at our Glambassadors events – we’ve raised over £250,000. The entirety of these proceeds have gone directly to the incredible causes that the foundation supports.

Soon enough, she was finding it too much to handle on her own, so she asked neighbours to help her. Inspired by the difference Winnie was making, they joined her efforts. It wasn’t long before she had 20 volunteers, not only cooking for children three times a day, but also visiting and feeding sick neighbours, caring for them in any way they could. After two years, the volunteer group had grown to 50.

If I didn’t do it, nobody would. This has got to start somewhere. WINNIE MABASO

When Lisa Ashton MBE – a BBC documentary maker at the time – first visited South Africa in 2004 while making a programme, one of her interviewees was Winnie Mabaso. Touched and inspired by Winnie’s kindness to give back, Lisa returned to the UK and began fundraising for Winnie’s first orphanage. Sadly, just a few months later, after enough money was raised for the children's new home, Winnie passed away very suddenly. At her funeral, which Lisa attended, all the children from the orphanage stood hand in hand around her coffin. It was at that moment that Lisa decided to continue Winnie’s kindness and philanthropy in her memory, and thus The Winnie Mabaso Foundation was born. For nine years, Lisa juggled her job at the BBC with running the Foundation until, in 2013, she handed in her notice to run the charity full-time. Since starting the Winnie Mabaso Foundation in 2004, Lisa and her team have launched incredible projects to support women and children. The projects include Ilamula House (Zulu for lemon, on account of the beautiful lemon tree in the front garden), a home for 64 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

WINNIE MABASO WITH LISA ASHTON MBE

The money raised has funded a new roof and solar panels for the Ilamula House orphanage, so they’re no longer subjected to the battering storms and the constant power outages of South Africa. It has also paid for the grocery bill for the orphanage for an entire year and an outdoor classroom. This money raised has paid for experiences that you and I may take for granted. Last year, the granny club were treated to a once in a lifetime holiday and felt the soothing breath of the ocean for the first time in their lives. Over the past three years, our Ambassadors have donated over 1,500 packets of fruit and vegetable seeds, an entire van’s worth of children’s clothes, as well as over 2,000 pairs of underwear and 4,000 pairs of socks. Not too long ago the Tropic team and 200 of our Ambassadors were honoured to meet the children of Ilamula House, the grannies and of course, Lisa. Seeing first hand how our donations had generated incredible change in so many lives, showed just how crucial that random act of kindness Winnie Mabaso made all those years ago really was. Just as Winnie’s mission inspired others, we’ve seen that doing good encourages others to do the same. Separate from our Glambassadors fundraising events, Ambassadors have drawn on the financial freedom they

have from being part of the Tropic family to personally support The Winnie Mabaso Foundation. From sponsoring the girls and grannies, to completely funding the construction and materials of an entire home for a family in need, they’ve shown dedication and generosity towards the work the foundation undertakes. The Winnie Mabaso Foundation shows us time and time again how our choices can help change the world. Maybe, rather than success being the key to happiness, happiness could be the key to success, and true happiness comes from giving. Sometimes it’s the little things we do that have a huge impact, when a collection of small acts help to generate change for generations to come.

FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING

t’s the little things you do that can ease the weight of the world’s waste. Tread the earth a little lighter with these top tips for going greener. By Phillipa Smith Phillipa, previously Editor of both Be Kind and Vegan Life magazines, has spread her sustainable wings and flown into freelance journalism with a focus on all things ethical and green.

Be Thoughtful About Fashion

We’re all aware of the perils of fast fashion, and as tempting as those bargains can seem, the impact of impulse purchases is significant. From the labour behind the label to water waste, microfibre pollution and its huge carbon footprint, it’s time to ditch fast fashion and start shopping smarter. Second-hand clothing is a wonderful way to indulge in some retail therapy while being a little more sustainable – as well as saving the energy used to create a new product, you can find yourself one-off pieces that have been built to look great and last. If you don’t fancy trawling the shops, then Oxfam, Vinted and ASOS Marketplace are great places to explore online. Also, when you’re having a closet clear out of your own, remember to take your pre-loved items to charity shops and clothes banks or consider selling them on. The best philosophy to have, however, when being thoughtful about fashion, is ‘don’t buy what you don’t need’ – remember that choosing to buy affordable pre-worn items rather than having to is a privilege. As charity shops begin to gentrify due to a shift in demand for secondhand, we all need a tenacious grip on our purchasing power, using it mindfully to buy more expensive, slow fashion garments where we can afford to so that charity shops can remain accessible. Remember that sustainability isn’t a trend – marginalised and underprivileged communities have been making do with only what they need for centuries.

Reuse and Refill

As consumers, we throw away an incredible amount of rubbish every year, contributing to a plethora of issues for our beloved planet. Instead of adding another piece of trash to the world’s problematic landfill pile, why not consider refilling? There are many ways to do this and a great place to start is by finding your local zero-waste store. Here, you can fill up your old washing up liquid bottles or take your empty Tupperware to stock up on items such as flour, lentils, rice, cereals and spices. Did you know you can refill many of your favourite Tropic

66 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

products, too, from their award-winning Elixir through to their Pillow Mist? Another great way to help cut back on waste is by creating a custom makeup palette with your favourite Tropic beauty items – when something runs out, instead of buying a brand new compact, you can simply replace it with a new pan instead. Head to Tropic’s website to find out more. Tropic’s bath foam refill pouches use 87% less plastic than the original bottle and are 100% recyclable with their return five, get one free initiative.

If everyone chose the refill option for any of Tropic's facial serums and oils when re-ordering, an extra 2 TONNES of waste could be saved from being disposed of every year. Cut Back on Your Food Waste

We’re all guilty of wasting food – when last night’s leftovers aren’t perhaps sounding as tempting as a Friday night treat, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and let our appetites take over. The reality is we throw away a staggering amount of food – the equivalent of one in every five bags of shopping we buy and 7 million tonnes of food is wasted in UK households every single year (lovefoodhatewaste.com). Planning your meals in advance is a simple way to stay on track and to be more accountable for what you spend, and what you bin – create a weekly meal chart and only buy what you need for those recipes. Keep an eye on sell-by dates and move any items that are due to perish to the front of the fridge, so you’re prompted to use them first. Also, remember there are so many fresh foods you can freeze and use on another day, like bread, herbs, soups and curries.

Choose Ethical Brands

When it comes to purchasing, the pounds in your purse hold a lot of power. While shopping, choose brands whose ethics you align with and who are clear on the part they are playing in being more sustainable. Large corporations often carry big carbon footprints, so it’s worth finding out what your go-to companies are doing to offset this. For example, Tropic is a certified CarbonNeutral® company – all of their carbon emissions are accounted for and double offset. Showing your support for brands that give back is an easy way to make a big difference – look out for logos on packaging that assure you a company is doing their bit for the environment and do your research on their certifications before you buy. Take time to find out where and how your clothes are made too – check out Good On You (goodonyou.eco) for a list of ethical brands and to see how your current favourites fare, too. In response to fears of global water scarcity, Tropic’s Clear Skies Cleansing Powder and Clear Slate Deep Cleansing Powder are all waterless products, in both the manufacturing process and their carefully considered formulations.

Save on Precious Resources

We are so lucky to have access to clean, running water at the turn of a tap and electricity at the flick of a switch. But, all too often we take these luxuries for granted, and collectively our consumption puts a big strain on the planet. There are a multitude of ways to be more sustainable in your home – watching your water usage is a great place to start. The average 8-minute shower uses 62 litres of water (Unilever) – next time you take one, try sticking to a time limit of 5 minutes, and encourage your family to do the same. Turning off the taps while you lather up will cut your water usage right back, too,

and don’t keep the flow running while you brush your teeth or wipe down any surfaces. Also, simply remembering to turn off appliances at the wall and always switching off lights when you leave the room can make a big difference.

Take Lessons from the Past

We have much to learn from previous generations, when resources were less abundant and living sustainably was second nature. We don’t need to look back far either – it wasn’t long ago that being frugal and repurposing items was a way of life; it’s only in our modern, ‘throw-away’ society that often we don’t stop to consider how to make do and mend the things we already own. Next time you’re considering a new purchase, look carefully at the items you already have. Could your shoes last a little longer with a clean and a simple re-heeling? Could those old jeans see a new lease of life as shorts? For the things you can’t fix, such as electrical appliances, consider getting a professional to take a look before you buy brand new.

We asked Phillipa what makes her feel empowered. Spending time with my girlfriends, sharing stories and ideas – we always lift each other up and support new plans and goals.

The Eyes Have it

ye makeup has had a chequered history, yet how we dress our eyes is more relevant than ever before. Watch and learn... By Cassie Steer

In terms of facial real estate our eyes may not assume as much acreage as say, the cheeks, yet we’re pre-programmed to find them the most alluring of all our features. Poems have been penned in their honour and songs crooned in their appreciation, so it’s not surprising that we’ve been adorning them since day dot. “Our eyes help us to relay how we feel,” says Lee Pycroft, registered psychotherapist and Pro Makeup Artist. “The way we use them to communicate is expansive, conveying information in ways that we still don’t fully understand. So, enhancing them with makeup can add another layer to how we capture attention and express ourselves.” Interestingly, the way that we’ve been decorating our peepers hasn’t changed much over the course of the last 30-odd millennia, despite the recent plethora of Insta-trends; "There’s been a consistent way that makeup has developed," says Richard Russell, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology at Gettysburg College, who has conducted numerous studies into how makeup changes the way we perceive faces. “Women wearing makeup are generally seen as more competent, intelligent and dominant, and eye makeup plays an important role in this.” While we often think of makeup as a purely cultural phenomenon, Russell notes that it rests on some important biological foundations. For example, human brains crave symmetry so eye makeup is a clever way of cheating mother nature with millimetre precision (depending on your skills at wielding an

88 | GLOW | ISSUE 1 | AW2020

eyeliner that is). We’re also wired to equate youth with fertility, so increasing the size of your eyes with makeup can make you look younger. Even the bastion of makeup wizardry, the smoky eye, has a little science behind it. Russell and his co-authors found that the more colour contrast there is between a woman’s eyes and her skin tone, the more feminine and attractive she is deemed to be. In short, it’s all in the eyes.

History In Focus

Since the dawn of time humans have been playing with makeup (hurrah for opposable thumbs!) But it’s the queen of the 69BC cat eye, Cleopatra herself, who’s been our enduring inspiration. “Eye makeup had several functions back in Ancient Egypt, including acting as a sunscreen for the eyes, with kohl being used to protect both men and women from the glare of the sun,” says Cosmetics Historian Gabriela Besame. “Coloured eyeshadows would be made from minerals like malachite, and the more elaborate the makeup, the higher the social status of the wearer.” The Romans also enjoyed a degree of makeup play, using burnt clove to enhance their brows and highlight the eyes, Besame adds, but cosmetics didn’t really have a renaissance until the twentieth century, saving its role in the theatre. That’s a good few thousand years of makeup ‘meh’ thanks to the facial hair-shirking Medieval period and those puritanical Victorians. In fact, good

Learning to care less about what people think. I’m not there yet, but it’s very liberating to feel comfortable in your own skin without approval from others.

1915 saw the birth of the first pre-packed mascara, a new category of makeup, but it was still an inordinately messy affair and eye makeup was almost exclusively worn by film stars and musicians. “It took until the 1920s, when film really took off, for a shift to occur. Eyes had to be extra expressive to convey emotion on the silent screen – and women sought to emulate their on-screen heroes,” says Besame. From then on, eye makeup has vacillated with each decade. The ‘hello party’ smoky eyes of the 20s made way for the war-rationed pencil-thin brows and near-bare eyes of the 30s and 40s. In the 50s and 60s, as youth culture exploded, eye makeup took centre stage with maximal mascara, XXL eyeliner and lashings of lashes. Mass market makeup was born. But soon, so too was the Women's Liberation Movement which, in the 70s, implored everyone to reject beauty stereotypes and go au naturel, only for the pendulum to swing back with pure, unadulterated 80s excess – resulting in a kaleidoscope of eyeshadows and bolshy brows. “But that changed in the 90s,” says Besame, “as women wanted to be taken seriously in the boardroom. Suddenly everything is brown – emulating power and playing down overt femininity by way of neutrals.” Only with the rise of reality TV and more makeup artists joining the fray in the form of YouTube tutorials in the 2010s, she adds, did the mode for exaggeration in makeup return.

“The rise of men doing tutorials, with their roots in drag makeup helped spark this very contoured, exaggerated idea of femininity.”

old Queen Vic made a public declaration that makeup was vulgar and improper, thanks to its associations with prostitutes.

Eyes Go Viral

Today, like never before, eyes are in the spotlight. There’s nothing quite like a global pandemic to prompt us to reassess the little things in life; namely, our relationship with our makeup and its emotional facility to lend a sense of control in times of uncertainty, as well as boost confidence. But it’s the advent of the compulsory mask that has had the most marked impact; “In a society where only the eyes are on display, using them to radiate our internal world could be what keeps us more socially connected. Wearing a pretty liner or playing up the eyes with colour can add a new playful element to experimenting with makeup and will help people to continue expressing their individuality,” says Pycroft. Without sounding too frivolous, eyes are back in style. And while these highly developed sensory organs serve to make sense of a world in flux, they also happen to look rather fabulous with a slick of mascara and a fierce eyeliner flick. So sharpen those eyeliner pencils, dust off your eyeshadow brushes and arm yourselves with your favourite mascara, now, more than ever, is time for a little rock ‘n’ kohl.

THE GREAT

Escape

ow our makeup bags became tool kits for escapism when our outdoor playground was strictly off limits. By Ava Welsing-Kitcher What I’m about to say may initially make me sound very boring, but we all know in our hearts that it’s true. The process of getting ready for something is more often than not better than the actual event itself. And especially so thanks to the lockdown period, which left us with everything to get ready with, yet nothing really to get ready for. Put your hand up if at some point during lockdown, you marvelled at just how amazing a simple tube of mascara is? Me too. The beauty items we were so used to throwing in handbags or sleepily applying first thing in that tiny slice of time between bed and commute took on a different kind of role when the world went on pause. If you were using the time to go au naturel, makeup was usually abandoned in bathroom cabinets for days on end, but then promised to transform us just in time for Zoom quizzes and at-home date nights. But for those who wanted to keep up the daily routine, most likely to maintain a sense of control in what was such an abnormal situation, these items became totems of normality. I joined the makeup-free team, after realising how much I’d gotten used to seeing my face made-up, how automatic it had become to cover up a spot and ‘erase’ dark circles. And this applied to my colleagues too; having never seen them without polished hair and perfectly applied makeup, I felt like I was getting to know them on another level on the odd occasion they would appear barefaced on video calls, messy buns, headscarves and all.

But then days at home turned into weeks, and we started to miss the fun of getting ready. By then, we’d nailed our skincare routines by having that extra time both morning and night to do it all properly (and maybe try mask mapping for the first time). I started to feel delighted when I saw a colleague wearing a punchy coral lipstick, simply because she “felt like brightening up the day,” or a friend proudly showing off a purple eyeliner that she’s previously been too scared to wear. It seemed everyone was rediscovering the joy of playing with makeup again, for themselves rather than an outside audience. All the extra time made previously hurried everyday tasks really enjoyable, like swiping that mascara brush across my lashes and seeing how it built them up and made my eyes look so feminine and fluttery. The act of getting ready, both for something and for nothing at all, has become such an important ritual, almost like a meditation where we can get caught up in something other than what is going on in the world. I developed even more respect for items like brow gel and cream blusher once I realised I was slightly more productive and upbeat on the days I used them. The act of prepping yourself can work wonders on your confidence and get you into work-mode, in the exact same way that taking it off at night settles you into switching off. Experts and doctors have researched how wearing makeup affects things like maintaining work-life balance or performing

well on academic tests (Harvard University), with positive results that suggest it helps us more than we might expect. And it’s been the same story with everything else in our beauty routines. For so many of us, skin and body care became a way to dote upon something we may have neglected in our busiest moments. Baths became a worthy opponent for showers, and such an essential way to unwind (and lock ourselves away from the family). Where previously, the mere thought of spending precious time massaging our faces seemed like a luxury we couldn’t afford (or something we paid others to do), it suddenly made perfect sense to while away the evening doing exactly that. Sales of jade rollers and LED face masks rocketed, as did decadent body butters and balms. I found myself treating my face and skin with equal compassion and care, exfoliating, cleansing, massaging and moisturising and absolutely loving being swept up in the ritual of it all. Those I knew who used to hate using body lotion (“It takes too long to dry! It gets all over my clothes!”) started bombarding me for recommendations, then delighting in the feeling of freshly softened and scented skin amongst new bedsheets. The same went for hair; with more time to actually indulge in hair masks, the nation went crazy researching and buying them, with hair mask searches on Google tripling in April compared to mid-March (Google Trends, 2020). We split ways again when it came to styling, either leaving our freshly-masked locks be or keeping up a regular blow-drying routine, but whatever the ritual, the satisfying result was the same. So, now we’re starting to regain a slice of normality, albeit still new, but it will be forever changed when it comes to beauty, among so many other things. Full lockdown has taught us to slow down, find the pleasure in things we took for granted and rediscover the power of looking good for ourselves. It’s something we may not have expected to emerge from this, but I for one am grateful it did. Whatever happens, remember your rituals and how they made you feel – the moments which sparked joy and contentment – and know you have something to retreat to when life gets too much. Whether you’re looking for a new Sunday brunch recipe, or a quick and easy go-to for when your body’s craving just as much of a treat as your skin, we have the ultimate sweet indulgence for you! We’ve teamed up with plant-based food blogger, Amy Lanza (@nourishing.amy), to share our recipe for deliciously decadent spiced berry crêpes, inspired by the fresh, tangy ingredients in our Deep Hydration Face Mask. Read on to find out how to make your very own at home:

YOU’LL NEED: FOR THE CRÊPES 40g oats or oat flour

50g buckwheat groats or buckwheat flour ½ tsp cinnamon and mixed spice ½ banana (50g)

180ml almond or oat milk

1 tsp cashew or almond butter 1 tbsp maple syrup

Oil of choice (we used sunflower!) for frying

FOR THE SPICED BERRIES

250g mixed berries, fresh or frozen ½ tsp cinnamon and mixed spice 1 tbsp maple syrup 2 tbsp water

TIME: 20 minutes

MAKES: 6 (serves 2) HERE’S HOW:

1. To prep the spiced berry topping, add the berries to a small saucepan with the cinnamon, mixed spice, maple syrup and water. Heat over a medium-high heat, stirring occasionally for 10 minutes until the berries have broken down and start to caramelise. 2. Next, add all the crêpes' batter ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth and creamy, making sure there are no lumps. 3. Heat a non-stick frying pan with a little oil and once hot, spoon in 2-3 tbsp of the crêpe batter and spread it around to form a larger circle – keep it thin so they are less chunky than pancakes! The heat should be medium-high, and take care to not let the oil burn! 4. Allow to cook for a couple of minutes until the edges begin to come away from the side of the pan, before carefully flipping over to cook the second side for roughly 1 minute. 5. Transfer to a plate and repeat! This recipe will make about 6 crêpes. 6. Finally, serve the crêpes with the spiced berries, some coconut yoghurt and any other extra toppings you’d like – we love maple syrup, cacao nibs and desiccated coconut!

MEET THE

Family

These Ambassadors were nominated by their fellow Ambassadors to share a bit more about themselves and what it's like running a Tropic business. RAJ PATEL | 42, Single Mum I come from a qualified nursing background and have always had a passion for health and beauty. Tropic is the perfect opportunity to pursue both of these passions, and it works around my day to day life. I used to suffer from constant breakouts that led to years of scarring. Tropic changed that. Pure Lagoon completely transformed my skin, helping me to beat the breakouts, plus adding Glow Berry into the mix cleared up my scars and pigmentation! I’m a single mum who strives to be a positive role model for my three children! I was raised by a strong woman, and she has given me the tools to follow in her footsteps and help others in need, I try to set the same example for my kids too. JENNY POWLEY | 64, Retired I became a Tropic Ambassador after staying with my sister and attending one of her Pampers. I completely fell in love with the products and began sharing them with my friends! I love being an Ambassador, it allows me to meet new people and build relationships. One of my favourite things is when someone tells me just how much of a difference the products have made to their lives! Though I’m retired, I haven’t lessened my speed: I’m exercise mad and like to hit the gym 4-5 times a week! I also enjoy spending time at my villa in Spain. I feel empowered through independence and building a business, but still find time to unwind laughing with my husband and son, plus a glass of red. ANTHONY CURL | 50, Pharmacy Manager I manage a local pharmacy and joined the Tropic family because the products are the best skincare I’ve ever used and I love sharing that with people! One of the things I love about being an Ambassador is when a customer tells me how much their skin has improved, and that they love the products too (I’ve nicknamed the Elixir my liquid gold, it’s that good at hydrating my skin). To have fun, I love walking my two Weimaraner dogs Oscar and Myrtle on the beach, followed by a spot of afternoon tea, but the thing that makes me feel most empowered is when people stop and ask me about Tropic because they’ve heard I sell their products! NIKKI MASON | 36, Wedding Cake Business Owner When I’m not busy with work, I spend most of my time with my husband and three children. The best thing about being an Ambassador is the family feeling. Everyone is so supportive and encouraging, from fellow Ambassadors to the HQ team. Plus, my Tropic journey has helped me build my self-confidence and overcome anxiety! With all my work commitments, I still find time to unwind. I love spending time at my beach hut in West Sussex with my family and taking walks along the coast. Not forgetting a pamper with our Body Smooth and Tahitian Vanilla and Coconut Bath Foam! Scan the QR code if you’d like to find out more or to support an Ambassador’s business by shopping with them. Alternatively, you can speak to the Ambassador who shared this magazine with you.
