H

ere we are in February 2017… is your resolution still intact or has it already fallen by the way side? The whole resolution thing has never been something that I have done; but hey whatever it takes to motivate us to make a positive change in our lives is a good thing. But if you find it hard to keep your resolution, maybe step back to reevaluate why this is happening. Most of all…don’t give up just yet; maybe all that is needed is a step by step plan, making sure you take small steps toward achieving your goal each day. This has been on my mind after seeing my gym fill up after the new year to see that most of the new faces have already disappeared. It happens like clockwork… people come in to get in shape, hit the weight room way too hard for an out of shape person and get really sore or worse yet injure themselves. They’re trying to get back into shape in one week and we all know that it just does not happen that way! I think that is what they call unrealistic expectations. If people could just understand that being fit does not happen overnight but rather by making small improvements over time, embracing the process of getting there is part of the journey. Resolutions and the gym is just a good example, but the same thing applies regardless of any goal. For me, it’s all about setting realistic goals in the first place and then setting smaller goals that are achievable today and this week. Then set the next goal for next week and repeat each week. One thing that we observe over the years by publishing this magazine is that the motorcycle industry is always moving changing and evolving. It is interesting how trends tend to recycle themselves over time. What was once old is now new again. But what really got me thinking was listening to people talk unenthusiastically about upcoming events. Bikers still come out, but sometimes it’s in smaller numbers. But what we do not hear is what bikers actually want to see more and why these events are not as fun for them any longer. That being said, this is my challenge to you…let us know what would reinvigorate some of the bigger events out there for you! Let’s not waste time picking events apart, but rather find new and interesting ideas to make events new and exciting again! Brain storm with your buddies and shoot us an email with your ideas to thunderroadsnorcal@yahoo. com We think your feedback could help to revolutionize the entire event scene.

MINNEAPOLIS (January 9, 2017) — Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced it will immediately begin winding down its Victory Motorcycles brand and related operations. Polaris will assist dealers in liquidating existing inventories while continuing to supply parts for a period of 10 years, along with providing service and warranty coverage to Victory dealers and owners. Today’s announcement does not affect any other Polaris business units. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for me, my team and the Polaris Board of Directors,” said Polaris Industries Chairman and CEO Scott Wine. “Over the past 18 years, we have invested not only resources, but our hearts and souls, into forging the Victory Motorcycles brand, and we are exceptionally proud of what our team has accomplished. Since inception, our teams have designed and produced nearly 60 Victory models that have been honored with 25 of the industry’s top awards. The experience, knowledge, infrastructure and capability we’ve built in those 18 years gave us the confidence to acquire and develop the Indian Motorcycle brand, so I would like to express my gratitude to everyone associated with Victory Motorcycles and celebrate your many contributions.” Several factors influenced today’s announcement. Victory has struggled to establish the market share needed to succeed and be profitable. The competitive pressures of a challenging motorcycle market have increased the headwinds for the brand. Given the significant additional investments required for Victory to launch new global platforms that meet changing consumer preferences, and considering the strong performance and growth potential of Indian Motorcycle, the decision to more narrowly focus Polaris’ energy and investments became quite clear. “This decision will improve the profitability of Polaris and our global motorcycle business, and will materially improve our competitive stance in the industry,” said Scott Wine. “Our focus is on profitable growth, and in an environment of finite resources, this move allows us to optimize and align our resources behind both our premium, high performing Indian Motorcycle brand and our innovative Slingshot brand, enhancing our focus on accelerating the success of those brands. Ultimately this decision will propel the industry-leading product innovation that is core to our strategy while fostering long-term growth and increased shareholder value.” Polaris will reduce the appropriate operating cost based on this decision, while continuing to support the future growth of the ongoing motorcycle business. Polaris remains committed to maintaining its presence in the Spirit Lake, Iowa community with Indian Motorcycle production and in the Huntsville, Alabama community with its Slingshot production. 13 Annual David Mann Chopper Fest th

December 11 (Ventura): After years of wanting to go to the David Mann Chopper Fest, this year I finally made it there! Located at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, I was so excited that I arrived at 9:30am for its 10am opening. As I was walking in, several motorcycles were roaring down the long street leading to the event. At the entrance I paid a very reasonable $15 (Amazing!) for such a prestigious event. As I walked in there was a chopper riding by with one of the longest springers I have ever seen. I realized then I was definitely in “Chopper Heaven”. After entering the gate, I saw row upon row of choppers of every style and color. One of the first things that caught my eye were the unique metal sculptures of recycled motorcycle parts by KD Customs. Next, I saw a banner on an old Ford Econoline van that said “Good Old Time Revival”. They were from Camarillo and had half a dozen cool retro style choppers. Back to the main vending area, I heard the DJ music thumping up and the crowd was quickly growing. There were lots of vendors with great motorcycle gear. Everything imaginable was for sale

including parts, leather goods, helmets, books and memorabilia. The event was organized to appeal to the new hip style young people with tats and beards who are the main core of the chopper revival. Then I noticed two children were playing in a tool box at the Shotgun Shocks booth while their dad was selling the shocks. Another booth that caught my eye was Helmet Division. They were recycling old helmets like Bell and others by reinstalling foam and polishing them. These old helmets are worth quite a lot of money - if they are unique enough. The art show was an outstanding display of up and coming artists in the style of David Mann and Ed “Big Daddy” Roth. I am glad to see this art form continuing to be popular. I met some young guys from a club called “Deathtrap MC” from Sonora. They were selling a book called “Basket Case” that had stories of the actual chopper club called “El Foresteros MC” from Minnesota and also included stories about Mondo Porras of Denver’s Choppers fame. In fact, the Denver’s Choppers booth had nice choppers on display but I just missed talking to Mondo Porras, one of its

co-founders. One of the choppers on display was from Hatt’s Motorcycles of Forest Knolls - all the way from Northern California. Throughout the show were many fine choppers on display including vintage and new; there were daily riders and antiques of all makes. The “Best of Show” was a pink chopper with a Panther motorcycle engine owned by Andrew Ursich. There was great live music as well, including the Shari Puorto Band that was playing hard driving Rhythm and Blues. I loved the band so much I bought two CD’s. I am certainly glad that I went and recommend this event for it’s great display of choppers and because it was lots of fun! Article and photos contributed by Bobby “G” Godwin

Over the years this event has raised a whopping $200,000+ for the appreciative folks over at UC Davis Children’s Hospital. In fact, part of the new wing at the hospital is named after the shop as a result of all the dedicated artists who have donated their time and talent to the cause and the hospital. “What an honor!” Bill went on to say, “None of this would be possible without our clients and staff” It was a very long day for the volunteers working hard all day and into the night. After all the ink has all settled and the tattoo machines all lay quiet, volunteers summed up that they had tattooed over 100 customers who were willing to come in on this day and lay their money down for the kids. Last year, a few days after the event Wild Bill and Roxanne were able to present the UC Davis Children Hospital with a check for $16,000. Thanks to the efforts of all the volunteers and customers there will be a parent of a small child out there that can rest a little easier with the knowledge that their child is getting the best medical care possible. When you head out to Wild Bill’s Tattoo this year, don’t forget that appointments are preferred on February 25th (to avoid a long wait) but not necessary. Please come with your tattoo ideas on paper (if possible) it’ll save a lot of time. For more information visit: WILDBILLS.com or check out the FB page Wild Bill Hill. Tech Tips VINTAGE SPRINGER DISC BRAKE INSTALL

T

his month’s project bike is a special construction bobber. It’s a rigid frame with a vintage H-D Springer front end, Panhead top-end over a late Shovelhead bottom-end with electric start. A little bit of everything! The owner wanted to change the existing 21” spool front wheel to a modern hub that would accept a disc brake rotor. Back in the day running around with just a rear brake on your chopper was a common practice. Not the best for effective braking, and in that rare mishap when the only system you have fails, the backup is downshifting and dragging your feet! ______________________________________________

safety of a front brake. It is worth mentioning again that this is only an 8 ½ inch disc on the front. This is one of those situations where there is some give and take. The smaller disc is aesthetically pleasing but brake performance suffers somewhat. The laws of physics being what they are, this

The good news is you don’t have to exchange “cool” for safe.

______________________________________________ We went to Fab Kevin in Clinton Township, MI. He makes a front disc brake kit that fits the bill perfectly. We also sourced the front wheel from him as well. The kit comes with a two piston brake caliper, an 8 ½“ brake rotor, a mounting bracket, an anchor rod, and bronze spacers. The kit is designed to run on a ¾” axle. Since our vintage front end uses a 5/8” axle, Kevin will provide a hub sleeve and replacement spacers to adapt this kit to size. We opted to machine our own. For hand controls - the owner chose Lowbrow Customs Kustomtech front brake master cylinder and clutch lever assemblies. They’re not cheap, but their form and function are on point!

was expected. It still functions adequately, but the point I want to make is that it will not lock down that front end like a modern disc brake. Next month we’ll talk about the magneto on this vehicle. Questions and comments can be sent to e-mail: craig@twogunnerscustomiron.com, or call 530-263-8071. Additional information can be found www.twogunnerscustomiron.com. See us on Facebook

We went to Barnett for the clutch cable. These folks can put together custom cables for just about any application. Not only did we need a custom length cable, we needed the lever end with a late model eyelet to work with Lowbrow’s clutch lever and the actuator end with the 4 speed threaded sleeve and ferrule. He also wanted to change out the ape hangers for a set of drag bars. The combination of these parts gave the bike a great new look with the added Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 10

ROAD TRIPPIN’:

Norway

motorcycle vacation in Norway? It wouldn’t have been at the top of my list but clearly the Norse gods know better. On the invite of MC Yellow Jacket (YJMC) friends Svein Garberg and Barbro Wengen and Four Winds MC club member “Odd” William Bakken in Sarpsborg, Norway, the offer was accepted by this here Moonshiner MC 13 biker and off with the wife I went on Norwegian Air, a 9.5 hr direct flight from Oakland, California to the beautiful city of Oslo, Norway ($512 coach or $1212 premium each way). Our first inclination was to pack cold weather gear because Norway sits smack dab at the same latitude as Alaska, but this is summer, so we got rid of that notion. Traveling to Norway in August coincides with the Norwegian summer, where you get 13 hours of sun and temperatures that are fairly mild in the 60-70’s, but… with 50%+ chance of precipitation! The weather did have two personalities during our visit, temperate conditions of blue skies with clouds similar to SF or drizzly rain like Seattle…we got a little of Seattle up front and a lot SF clear sailing sunshine and clouds on the back end of our 12 day visit.

Upon setting foot on this pristine faraway land, our MC friends quickly introduced us American bikers to the Nordic Viking ways, ushering us down to Lake Mjøsa (Norway’s largest lake at 72 miles long) and putting us on a replica Viking boat captained by Capt. Harald and wife Marion, who then powered us out on the calm waters and put his crew to work putting 10’ oars in our hands and commanding us to row back to shore (read sore back) , where eventually hitting land, we were greeted by YJMC who welcomed us with a traditional Norwegian BBQ. This was no ordinary BBQ, but a grill frying up a local delicacy of Minka Whale steaks. I must say if they didn’t tell us, I swore we were eating rare beef steaks! Now we were considered adopted Norwegians! Next up was a 9hr ride to the spectacular port city of Ålesund up Europe Hwy E6 past the town of Lillehammer (site of 1984 Olympics) over to E136 to E39 towards our final destination. Our initial plan was to rent Harleys but we found out the hard way that Oslo’s Lazy Boy Harley only rents out 7 bikes in all the city, with reservations 4-5 months in advance (not good planning on our part only calling a month ahead!) As we were planning the route, weather forecast called for heavy rains during our trip, so we opted to surrender to the comfy confines of a Peugeot cage-pathetic, I know. What lay ahead though was to be the most breathtaking inspiring venture through carved glaciers that rivals Yosemite and the Sierras and would have been much better served on motorcycles, something we will plan ahead for next time. The stretch of E136 road is a favorite of the local Norwegian MC community and despite the rains, many had ventured out (they are used to inclement wet weather-it’s Norway!) We had the good fortune to meet up at many roadside stops and cafes with MC club members from around the region, including the Hardraade MC, Iron Wolf’s and the Chopper

Freaks. Svein, who is well known in the biker community from his earlier Boozefighter days, easily struck up great conversations with our biker friends who filled us in the local biker happenings. A couple guys on 04 Big Dogs engaged in some chat that involved the cams and performances of their bikes relative to the new Harleys, in broken English no less-entertaining conversation in my book! A valuable travel tip – you will find no matter where you go in Norway, most everyone understands English and is happy to converse with you! There was no pretense about treating you different in this country because you don’t speak their language. When we reached the port city of Ålesund, (Pop. 45K) which averages about 10” of rain in August, it became abundantly clear why this North Sea coastal oil port resembles the emerald city of Seattle…rain! The inlet waterways of Ålesund are dotted with colorful buildings reminiscent of Copenhagen or Italian waterways and easily makes for romantic strolls,

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 14

After touring the town, we took a side venture to an unmarked Marina business warehouse to see about an old Triumph motorcycle for sale on the internet. We were treated to a pleasant surprise because this also happened to be a covert storage barn of an avid BMW collector with bikes from late 50’s and early 60’s. Besides all the BMW parts spread throughout this warehouse, there in the corner was the focus of our visit, a 54 Triumph T15 Terrier. After some Norwegian chatter that I couldn’t even begin to translate, the hands were shaking and the deal was done. My friend would return later in the month to retrieve his new prized acquisition, a motorcycle ridden from his teen years. I felt like we were doing an episode right out of American Pickers where the more you chatted, the more interesting things you learned, like the fact that this elderly bike trader partakes in another intriguing MC activity, racing those death defying MC side car racers you see all over Europe… he’s the nutty guy who hangs off the side car during the race to steady the bike through the corners-craziness in my book! This fellow closed our visit by telling us he had to start preparing for his next race coming up in Germany. day or night, and even with an umbrella deployed. The local hotels (and city for that fact) were well presented and our Quality Inn ( $129.00 night) was impeccably clean with the friendliest staff. The whitefish at the Aqua Restaurant in our hotel was deliciously fresh as well as the Steamed Klippfish over at Brasserie Normandie restaurant (recommended by a local) which was a short stroll from our hotel. As you would expect, fish is prominent on Norwegian menus.

Leaving Ålesund, next stop was the hamlet of Sjoholt to meet the infamous Norwegian leather seamstress Agnes Lande-Laermakerne. Agnes, a descendent of the Norwegian Monarchy is a fascinating woman, who is an avid biker herself, and speaks several languages including the proper Kings English, but is well known in the MC community as “the Cut” maker (since 1993) for many of the old established motorcycle clubs in Norway. Inspecting her vests clearly exhibited why she has this reputation. All Agne’s work is done by her steady strong hands-no offshore subcontracting and is one of a kind artwork. Her works of leather range from using cowhides, kangaroos or the skins of reptilian slithers as well as salmon or cod fish. We knew Agnes from our internet purchases in the past and friends from Facebook, but now meeting her and partner Terje in person solidified the joyous personality we had come to know over cyber space. Go to Facebook www.facebook.com/laermakern/ to see her worldly talents. After our visit to Sjoholt, we headed South east down road 650 past old churches, some dating back to the 1150’s and headed towards the Fjords. To minimize going around all the fingertips of the Fjords, ferry services are the favored way to cut across these passages, as we planned our trip

back to the 1912 restored farmhouse where we were staying in Gjøvik. Continuing on Road 63, we suddenly found ourselves navigating the glorious Storfjorden Norwegian fjord. When we had thought we had seen all the hills of splendor heading up road E136, we were in store for more on scenic route Road 63 that took us to the top of Eagleroad at about the 3000 ft. level. Here we Norway’s found ourselves driving in Cut Maker the clouds with other tourists - Agnes and motorcyclists so we immediately pulled over with others. Here we stood, all galvanized at the most inspiring landscapes of Norway, peering down into the Fjords with clouds whirling around us. What lay below was one of the most famous fjords where cruise ships venture into the tiny tourist town of Geiranger. Traversing the switchback road down the mountainside to Geiranger agape with trinket hunters, we passed through onto Mountain Road 15 to Strynefjellet, a passage well above the tree lines, splashed with mountain top pristine aqua lakes draped with glacial ice caps, akin to navigating inside a Norwegian postcard. We continued on southeast through the mountains to the town of Otta, and back on E6 to Lillehammer to our farming homestead in Gjøvik. Our next visit was south of Oslo to the little town of Sarpsborg, where we met up with Odd of the Four Winds MC club. Our personal tour guide spent his day leading us Yankees around his MC backroads to see Viking hieroglyphics carved on rocks from 900 A.D. He then led us back to city of Oslo to experience the Viking ship museum which boasts 3 local ships unearthed from the 9th century. Another FWMC member Carlos treated us to a guided tour by boat around the spectacular homes of the Oslo Fjords. Next up was the historic fort of Fredriksten Fortress in Halden, boasting battles with the Swedes dating back to 1658 with many period buildings still standing from 1700’s. It leaves to the imagination all of the historical moments this fort holds in it’s past as it overlooks the city it was built to protect. Our final part of this intriguing adventure was riding an old HD 97 Glide with the YJMC’s around the farmlands of Gjøvik, Hamar and Lake Myjosa. Our plan was to ride to the other side of the lake to visit the local Hamar HD Bikestore shop. We encountered a brief heavy shower along the way but no worries...the local trolls (everywhere in Norway) would not deter us from our ride as the mild temps would dry us out very quickly. Unfortunately our visit to this MC shop yielded a closed sign! We found often in Norway, if a shop keeper has other plans, he closes the store and that’s how it is-onward. Score one for the trolls! Next stop was the town of Hamar, site of the Speed Skating Arena for the 94 Olympics, built to resemble the shape of an upside down Viking ship! Resonatingly cool! After a quick round of pizza and frosty frothers at Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 16

After taking in the crisp clean air of the Norwegian countryside where nary a drop of smog seemed to exist, we sallied our way to meet another local celebrity of Norway residing at an old farm homestead known as Berg gård, originating back to the 1300’s. As we dismounted our steeds, we stood amongst farm structures dating back to the 1750’s, as if transported back to days we couldn’t even fathom in America. However one building stood out from the others, a nondescript barn encasing some treasured beauties-a 1967 Camaro racer currently under restoration surrounded by parts of a Top fuel dragster raced by Pro Norwegian racer Jan Sturla. But we were here not to meet Jan and see his bike(who pulled in a little while later) but excited to meet his infamous mother -Kristin Hegre, known in these parts as the fastest female MC drag racer in Norway. Kristin entertained our group with her insights of motorcycle drag rac-

Basarene Brewpub in Hamar, we hit the backroads where most of these narrow country roads have no center lines, just side lines which makes for strategic biker jousting with oncoming trucks- exciting motorcycle riding. The rolling hills around Gjøvik boast strikingly green farmlands interspersed with forest groves as signs sprinkle the route warning for possible Moose and Elk crossings, which luckily we didn’t encounter this time of year, during the day anyway! We learned firsthand later that the Elk like to cross late in the evenings, fortunately while driving in our cage.

ing and she spoke of her passion for motorcycles beginning at age 14. It was when her young son started racing at age13 that Kristin was bit by the racing bug and took up this adrenalin pounding sport in her early 40’s. Still racing in her 50’s, Kristin is accumulating accomplishments (hitting the low 7.0’s -¼ mile) that few her age could even dream about. Her latest triumph was recently earning her Pro-License where she must contemplate racing Twin Top Fuel Racing Draggers. Now that‘s a dilemma most mortal motorcycle riders like us don’t have to ponder. Our biggest regret of the trip was not doing all these adventures on motorcycles, but that gives us time to plan for the future because we won’t pass up the opportunity again to ride amongst the Nordic Gods in this fantastic destination of Norway. If you get the chance, put this on the bucket list, you won’t be disappointed. Skål! Article and photos contributed by Gary and Mary Hoffman

ain and snow, rain and snow, for most of the past month, that’s pretty much what we have had as far as weather. But, low and behold, there were a couple of back-to-back sunny days thrown at us and we took advantage. Since it was a small window, we couldn’t get too far out, so we decided to putt out to the city, do some sightseeing and maybe take the ferry out to Angel Island. We headed out of Sacramento around noon or so and since we wanted to come over the Golden Gate Bridge from the north, we got on to I80 and took SR37 to Highway 101. Before crossing the bridge though, we pulled off at the Alexander exit, went left and then took a right on Conzelman Road. This, at times, twisty road will take you up to several vista points that have some fabulous views of the Golden Gate Bridge with the Bay and the City as a backdrop.

One of the unique things you can check out while soaking in the scenery are some of the old battery emplacements from WWII and earlier eras. From the time California became a state, the US Government was concerned about an attack or invasion of this strategic bay. Almost immediately, defense batteries were built to protect the area. Over the many decades, improvements were made to keep the batteries up to date with the latest military necessities. Before the second world war, a few of the batteries had 16 inch guns installed that could fire a 2100-pound projectile almost 26 miles. As it turned out, none of the guns were ever fired at any hostile forces and by 1948 all of the guns and other defensive measures were pretty much

Cliff House

Hitting the road, we crossed the bridge, headed to the coast and had a quick bite at the Cliff House. Actually, three different restaurants are housed here and offer varied menus. Some fine coastal views also. After lunch, we rode on across town to North Beach where we checked in to the Columbus Motor Inn. This hotel is one of the best values in the area. Well kept, free covered parking and reasonable rates. When it’s time for dinner, since it’s North Beach, there are plenty of Italian Restaurants to choose from. One of our favorites is just up the street a bit; the Mona Lisa. Another favorite is a block over from the hotel on Mason, the Fior D’Italia. Opening in 1886, it’s the oldest Italian restaurant in America. After dinner, we meandered over to the Saloon for a beer and some music. We used to come to the city a lot. For many years, the Saloon was our hang out when Johnny Nitro had the regular Friday night gig. That night though, it was Chris Ford that kept the place rockin’ ‘til late. The next morning, we walked down to Fisherman’s Wharf and bought a couple of tickets to Angel Island. Ferry rides on the bay are always continued...

Ayala Cove

On the dock nice, being you’re surrounded by so many picturesque landmarks. It was just a 20 minute or so cruise over to Ayala Cove. The cove is named after Lt. Juan Manuel de Ayala, who in 1775 was in command of the ship San Carlos and were the first Europeans to enter the bay from the sea. Anchoring in the cove, he named the island ‘Isla de Nuestra Senora de Los Angeles’, Angel Island. Over the years, because of its location, the island has had many different military functions. Even Nike missiles were there at one time. During WWII, virtually every soldier that left to fight in the Pacific, were transferred to Angel Island before shipping out. ____________________________________________

Angel Island was once called the Ellis Island of the West. ____________________________________________

It was, for many years, the processing station for immigrants coming and going from China and other Asian and Pacific nations. Those found to have health issues could be treated or quarantined right on the island. So, we checked the place out, did a short hike up near the immigration center and relaxed out on the dock. The Cove Café was closed for the season, but when open, a good place to eat. You can also rent bicycles there if you choose. We’re planning on coming back in the summer to camp out. We’ve heard, if you get a clear night, the stars and surrounding lights of the cities and bridges are awesome. We wanted to stay another night, but another big storm was coming in late that night, so we figured we better get out of town while the gettin’ was good. BIKER BAND REVUE: The Fryed Brothers Band This Is America. This Is Biker Culture….Get On. Hold Tight. Shut Up I first contacted Harry Fryed, the bandleader, fiddle, harmonica and vocals of the Fryed Brothers Band, to set up an interview for a feature article in Thunder Roads NorCal. Little did this contributor know the depth of what was to come. Harry showed up one rainy afternoon ready to give an account of the Fryed Brothers Bands profile. The first and last question I got to ask was “how did the Fryed Brothers Band get started?” Harry looked out over the top of his glasses and said “have you seen the movie - I RIDE?” Kicking myself for not having done my homework I had to say no. “Well…” Harry replied as he was getting up to leave, “…I’ll send a copy over.” Harry left and I stood there with a blank sheet of paper. The next day the movie I RIDE along with a CD of the soundtrack arrived. I watched the movie in its entirety… a couple of times. The movie I RIDE is a Water Buffalo Pictures, produced and directed by Daron Ker has got to be bar none the number one best account of the biker lifestyle since the 1969 Easy Rider movie. I RIDE is a biker documentary about the Fryed Brothers Band. It’s about how they began and where they have been. It’s about bikers, by bikers. It’s about family ties, brotherly love and music with original footage of the early days of the Fryed Brothers Band and the driving force behind them. As the central theme, it is about the tragedies that they encountered along the way and a bond that only a biker understands. It also has a host of celebrities, friends and family that were given the spotlight to talk about their friendship with the Fryed Brothers Band. Among them is Willie Nelson, personal friend of many years

and has preformed many concerts with the Fryed Brothers Band. Sonny Barger, founder of the Oakland Hells Angels, Pat Simmons of The Doobie Brothers, folk singer Steve “Beatnik” Werner along with motorcycle attorney Steve Schapiro of Schapiro and Leventhal. Dave Nichols editor-in-chief of Easyriders Magazine calls the movie I RIDE “The BIKER flick the world needs to see”. Gerry “Mama” Fryed gives an account of Harry’s musical beginnings and Tommy’s famous note to her when he was a little fella. The entirety of the note became the title of their movie along with a rhyme penned in a letter by older brother Mark to Tommy. Fifteen or so years later, the letter was put into lyrics by Harry Fryed. Harry and Tommy started the band back in 1980 as a tribute to their older brother who was tragically killed by a cager. The spirit of their brother is alive and well in the biker style music they continue to play. Today, Harry is the only original band member. In 2014, Tommy Fryed left the band to take that glorious heavenly ride in the sky joining older brother Mark. Now other talented musicians accompany Harry to keep the legend alive. Rex Stenzel (lead guitar and pedal steel guitar), Bobby Boutte (drums/vocals), Warren Dorrell (vocals, guitar & bass guitar) and the newest member Stephen Michael Pocus (keyboard). The Fryed Brothers Band have been touring the US and internationally for 36 years. They have appeared top billing for just about every biker event there is including Sturgis, The Easyriders Bike Show, Rip’s Bad Ride, Daytona Bike Week and can also be seen at various clubs and events throughout the Sacramento area. Further north in Leggett, The Annual Fryed Brother Bash in the Redwoods is considered a “must attend biker event”. Last year, The Fryed Brothers Band toured with the Easyriders Bike Show across the US as the event’s music headliner and will do so once again in 2017. Billy

Idol dubbed them as “The most dangerous biker band in the world”. After attending their latest gig on New Year’s Eve, I can say without a doubt they are “The best damn biker band on and off the stage today”. The Fryed Brothers Band profile is endless with their Stephen Michael accomplishments. ne glance at this eye popping bike and you might have guessed that Paul Binford of Binford’s Custom Cycles had something to do with it. As it turns out, the bike owner Frank Orr is a big fan of the builds that come from Binford’s Custom Cycles. AS soon as he bought this 2015 Road Glide, Frank road it straight to Binford’s shop in Manteca and the process of turning this stock Road Glide into a one off custom bagger began. As a military veteran, Frank had spent some time stationed in Japan where he took an interest in the Japanese culture and to the ways of the samurai warrior. Ultimately, it was an ani-

mated television program called Afro Samurai that became the inspiration for this custom build. Frank is very thankful of Binford’s Custom Cycles for turning his dream into a reality and to his wife, Renee who was very supportive of Frank’s vision. We agree Paul and his crew hit this one out of the park, congratulations Frank we look forward to seeing you rolling down some NorCal roads on this beauty. t the close of the 90’s, we had reached a point in our journey where Harley-Davidson was still coming on strong, Japanese bikes were twisting the throttle and climbing the ranks, and Indian was creeping back onto the scene with some solid bikes. The 2000’s wouldn’t slow manufacturers down either. Harley-Davidson brings the fuel injected V-Rod to the table in 2002. The V-Rod also combined overhead cams and liquid cooling and delivered an ass kicking 115 horsepower. The Sportster line of bikes received updates to its seating positions, frames, and engine mountings, as well as the addition of the XL FortyEight in 2010. The touring editions at Harley also had some work done; improving transmissions and creating a new frame that provided a longer wheelbase to improve seating position and maneuverability. 2006 brought us the all-new FLHX/I Street Glide to the touring family as well. The biggest change for Harley this decade was quite possibly the addition of the 2009 FLHTCUTG Tri Glide Ultra Classic. Harley’s first threewheeler for public purchase. Harley-Davidson wasn’t the only company hard at it during this time. After purchasing Indian Motorcycle Company from a London based private equity firm (Stellican), Polaris Industries Inc. took over production and relocated from Kings Mountain, N.C. to Spirit Lake, Iowa. While a modest number of Indian Chiefs had been produced in North Carolina, the resources of Polaris and the move to Iowa proved to be stellar for Indian. Indian not only began production again, but they introduced the powerful new Thunder Stroke 111 V –Twin in 2013 at Daytona Bike Week. In 2014, Indian unveiled the Indian Chief Classic, Indian Chief Vintage, and Indian Chieftain all equipped with the powerful Thunder Stroke engine as well. The Indian Roadmaster would soon follow, and then the Indian Scout, and the Chief Dark Horse. Indian came back with a vengeance…and with the mind-blowing power

behind these new bikes that has even the most expeditious riders shaking their heads. So the industry just keeps chugging along, perfecting the objects of our affection at every turn…and we all thank you for that, but what do these guys have up their sleeves for us in the future? Over the years concept bikes have emerged that look to the consumer to be straight out of the mind of H.G. Wells. But whatever happened to these bikes? Well, just as in the early years, development stages didn’t always progress past the prototype stage. Many of these concepts proved to be nothing more than cool ideas… ideas that appear feasible on paper, but lack the ability to actually function on the road. Despite this fact, some of them are still worth a look. The Nuclear Fusion Motorbike 2050 is a concept designed by Romain Herment. This concept bike uses nuclear energy as a power source. Herment calls it the Motorbike 2050 Version 2…..makes me wonder what kind of explosion Version 1 ended in. This futuristic bike uses two inexhaustible natural elements (deuterium and tritium) to allow for a sustainable ride should dark days come to the fuel industries. The Lamborbiker is a tribute to Nicolas Tesla and Ferrucio Lamborghini. This bike takes its name from invention and design…and with good reason. The Lamborbiker has hubless wheels and smooth clean lines, but is far from the prototype stage, as all design has been done via computer, and even the engine design has only gone as far as 3-D imaging thanks to specialized software. The Fallout is a concept bike that was conceived as a tribute to the classic chopper. The Fallout, sports a single sided swing arm that meshes with the Bimota sourced frame in order to create a completely unique “Hub-Centered” steering motorcycle. It has short bobber style handle bars, chopped exhaust, and a long tank to bring out chopper aesthetics that bikers know

and love. Combined with a bit of futuristic body styling, this becomes old school biker meets hover craft. With all of these potential avenues for the motorcycle industry to take, how do we even know what is feasible, and what is imagination running rampant onto paper? Well we know this for sure…times are definitely changing, and those changes affect us all in one way or another. The most likely adaptation the motorcycle community will see in the near future is hybrid bikes. The concept of an electric bike may not be your cup of tea (or bottle of beer, as it may be), but it is none the less, part of our future. As we look at hybrids today, many of the electric cars actually get better gas mileage than your two-wheeler. Pretty crazy to imagine, but true. There are positives and negatives to the idea of hybridization of motorcycles. The internal combustion engine has been around for more than 100 years, and we have done pretty much everything to perfect its original design. Bringing up the old adage, “If it ain’t broke…” Also, oil companies really don’t want everyone plugging in versus filling up…big oil doesn’t know how to be poor, nor do they want to be! Also, your bike makes noise….good noise…noise that makes the cage drivers pay attention when you’re out on the

road. Hybrids are clean, therefore good for our planet. Electric engines have total linear power availability… electric bikes can go from 0-100 mph in one gear if you want to. The choice will soon be yours to make. From the infancy of the motorcycle to the possibilities of what the future may hold for our two-wheeled friends; the motorcycle has come a long way. Motorcycles vary considerably depending on the task for which they were designed, such as long distance travel, navigating urban traffic, cruising, sport and racing, or off road conditions. No longer must riders endure back breaking rides that can heat the nether regions upwards of 300 degrees. Not to mention, we can travel hundreds of miles before succumbing to the magnetism of a gas station. Today motorcycles are the most common type of motor vehicle in the world…200 million motorcycles (33 bikes per 1,000 people) to be exact. Not bad for the idea that stemmed from Roper’s twisted imagination and a bicycle so many years ago. Bikes today are affordable, trustworthy, comfortable, and above all still the coolest thing since sliced bread. Article and photos contributed by Melanie J Schwarte of Thunder Roads Magazine of Iowa

A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper, Guido, has cheated him out of $5 million dollars. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Guido would hear nothing, so he would never have to testify in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about his missing $5 million, he brings along his lawyer who happens to know sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, “Ask him where the money is!” The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, “Where’s the money?” Guido signs back, “I don’t know what you are talking about.” The lawyer tells the Godfather, “He says he doesn’t know what you’re talking about.” The Godfather pulls out a 38, puts it to Guido’s head and says, “Ask him again and if he doesn’t tell me, I’ll kill him!” The lawyer signs to Guido, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him.” Guido trembles and signs, “OK, OK! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno’s house.” The Godfather asks the lawyer, “What did he say?” The lawyer replies, “He says screw you, you don’t have the balls to pull the trigger.” _________________________________________________ During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, “How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put in a Nursing Home?” “Well,” he said, “we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub.” “Oh, I understand,” I said. “A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No” he said. “A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?” _________________________________________________

Bubba was taking a dump and checking out FB and read that on average; an American man will have sex two to three times a week. Whereas, a Japanese man will have sex only one or two times a year. This was very upsetting news to Bubba. He immediately called his best buddy, Earl, and said, “I know you’re going to be as shocked as I was, but I just come to find out that I’m Japanese.” _________________________________________________ The location of your mailbox shows you how far away from your house you can be in a robe before you start looking like a patient who’s just flew out and over the Cuckoo’s Nest. _________________________________________________ The other day my kinda’ ditzy neighbor with green hair (she changes it every month), came running up to me in the driveway jumping for joy! No judgement. it’s just her “thang”. I didn’t know why she was jumping so excitedly but I thought, “what the hell”, and I starting jumping up and down along with her as that’s just the best way to pacify her. She said, “I have some really great news!” I said, “Great. Tell me why you’re so happy.” She really is enthusiastic and sweet. She stopped jumping and breathing heavily from all the jumping up and down, told me that she was pregnant. I knew she’d been trying for a while so I told her, “That’s great I couldn’t be happier for you!” Then she said, “There’s more” I asked, “What do you mean there’s more?”. She said, “Well, we are not having just one baby. We are going to have TWINS!” Amazed at how she could know so soon after getting pregnant, I asked her how she knew. She said.... “Well, that’s the easy part. I went to WallyWorld and they actually had a home pregnancy kit in a TWIN-pack. Both tests came out positive!”

e are well on our way into the New Year. New dreams, new goals, and new resolutions. These are all well and good, but without an action plan, they usually remain idle. We may have a New Year’s goal of losing more weight, getting healthy, making more money, getting a new job, purchasing a new bike, shedding off old habits, or maybe even changing your surroundings for a better you. Since we are all so different in our wants and needs, the list could go on forever depending on what you are looking to change. We all have changes that need to be made and remember this: You are either moving forward or you are falling backwards, nothing ever stays the same. First, we must have a dream. We all have them and the crazier it seems, the more people that tell you, “you are off your rocker”, the greater the possibility of being able to achieve it. The key is action! You must have an action plan (goals) and a calendar to write down the deadlines. Without writing them down and having a calendar to set deadlines, there is no resolution, just mere words. We need to resolve to take action! To see the mountain and know beyond a shadow of doubt we will be able to climb the mountain. But without proper training, proper gear, and proper meal preparation, we will never be able to get to the top. All dreams start with a desire to be better, become better, or have something better. Maybe your 2017 goal is to love better since love cures all evil and is the foundation for all lasting

relationships. Maybe your goal is to finally kick that addiction and remove that lead weight that is holding you under. Maybe your goal is that new Screamin-Eagle Ultra-Classic you have been passing by month after month only dreaming that someday you will be able to purchase one. Or maybe your 2017 goal is to just find a little peace in your life that has been missing no matter how hard you have looked for it. In all of these scenarios there is one thing that is threaded through each and every one of them. Faith! Without the faith to know it is even possible to attain these goals, we are just wasting our time with another year of frustrations. There is hope though. There is hope because thousands have gone before us and have accomplished or fulfilled the very thing we may think impossible. Faith - my friends is the most powerful force on the planet. Faith is the freeing principle and the key that unlocks all the doors. Faith is the key that unlocks the broken heart, transforms the addict, encourages peace, and brings the tools that help people to move on and accomplish things they never thought they could. This could be your year. Come see what this faith thing is all about in 2017 and see the possibilities. Romans 12:2 – Don’t conform to the ways of the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. THEN you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – His good, pleasing and perfect will. (NIV) “Never Ride Alone” Pastor Johnny Lujan

MY TWO CENTS: W

LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED

e greeted 2017 at a New Years Eve party that didn’t start out to be a party. Diane and I thought we were just going for a drink and the next thing I know Stan and Terri from TRM Nor-Cal were forcing whiskey and champagne down our throats and before you know it we were drinking like we wanted to be chalk outlines on the sidewalk! That’s my story and I’m sticking to it! The plan wasn’t to drink like failures; it just got away from us, and man did I pay for it in the morning. I haven’t had a hangover in a long time and when I crawled out of bed New Year’s morning I knew it was a bad one. I staggered out of the bedroom to find some Tylenol because my head felt like it was in a vise. Even the hair in my nose hurt and after three cups of coffee and a pop tart it still tasted like the cat shit in my mouth, which is pretty scary because we don’t have a cat. I can’t believe I drank like I did, especially since I knew I was going on a ride New Year’s morning. It’s been a tradition for me since 1979. Rain or shine, flu or hangover, without fail - it’s a ride! There’s nothing like a motorcycle ride in the cold brisk morning air to cure a hangover… Bullshit! There is no cure for a hangover when you’re out in the cold winter weather and for the most part I don’t mind riding in the cold weather, but not when I’m seriously hung-over. Some people say drink more booze…..Brraap! Sorry, I almost threw up on my keyboard just thinking about it. I met up with Stan in the morning and I felt a little better knowing I wasn’t the only one who felt like shit. After talking to Stan, I felt bad for him because he sounded worse than I looked. We rode to the delta and we pulled up to a bar and I noticed a beautiful new Cadillac in the parking lot and I thought to myself that’s a nice big car. I’ll bet I can throw up on the other side of that car and no one will know. I tried, but no matter how shitty I felt I couldn’t do it. Once the gagging reflexes stopped I check my phone and I had a missed call. It was my Brother Z Bones and he said meet him and Dave at Fosters Big Horn in Rio Vista. We got on

our bikes and rode to Fosters and met up with Z Bones and the guys and we got this party started. Mick bought me a glass of the hair of the dog that kicked the living shit out of me last night and once I managed to keep it down, it made me feel a little better. We left Fosters with a pack of about 18 bikes and rode around the Delta and ended up in Walnut Grove at Wimpy’s Marina where I had a burger the size of your head and it made me feel almost human again. Then we rode over to Al the Wop’s for a final cocktail and said our good byes. I started my New Year’s with a great time partying with Diane and good friends, went for a nice ride, partied some more and had a nice meal with some more good friends and at the end of the day I felt pretty damn good. If this is any indication of how my new year is going to be, then I’m in for a fantastic 2017! We hope yours will be great too! Go ride like hell and have some fun! That’s my 2 cents.
