June Newsletter

2016

June began with a flurry of activity on the Agassiz Townhomes project that persisted through the middle of the month. Even after completing an application for tax credits last year and spending much time this spring creating the strongest application we could muster, there just seemed to constantly be one more thing we thought of to improve our package. We did in the end deliver an electronic submission and a “thicker than a ream of paper” physical packet to Minnesota Housing well in advance of the deadline on June 16th. As the last guy at Tri-Valley to have much to do with housing, I am the de facto Housing Department. With that being the case, it should be evident that I needed A LOT of help to get an application completed. Most of that help came from our collaboration with Three Rivers Community Action in Zumbrota. Those of you who have been around me much over the years know that I have long felt that agencies should leverage relative strengths and capacities for the benefit of others. Three Rivers has done this for Tri-Valley’s benefit and for that I am very grateful. I would also like to thank Tri-Valley staff who got me odds and ends needed for our application. After all of this time and effort it will be a long wait for the announcement in October. By the time October comes it will have been close to two full years since our rich partnership with the City of Crookston and Crookston Housing and Economic Development Authority was formed to address housing needs in the community. After a bit of a hiatus our food hub feasibility study got back on track in June. We are securing the funds needed to complete the study and hope to have the results by this fall. The consultant we are working with has started work with several other groups over the last three to four months so his time has been spread pretty thin. This has slowed progress down on our project a tiny bit but strengthened the prospects that the vision of a statewide network can be realized one day. We also had another Head Start monitoring visit the last week of June. I can close this month by sharing the happy news that there were no initial findings. Way to go Head Start! I wish you all a safe, relaxing Independence Day holiday.
