The coming year promises to be an historic one for Jazz in AZ, highlighted by the long-anticipated opening of The Lewis NashJazz in AZ Education and Performance Center in downtown Phoenix in early 2012. We will also be celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Jazz in AZ—quite an accomplishment in its own right! Opening a jazz education and performance venue in the current economic climate takes guts. But it is a necessary step in our evolution as a jazz support organization because America's original art form, jazz, is less and less available in our schools and in the media. So we have to step up to the plate and expose more youngsters to jazz, provide educational opportunities for those who have an interest in playing an instrument, and do everything we can to cultivate a young audience for our music. This noble mission is going to require the generosity of many who care about the future of jazz and can support our efforts through their expertise, donation of needed items, and financial contributions through current and planned gifts. A list of items currently needed for the Center appears on Page 3. If you can help us, we'd love to hear from you immediately! As you can see on the front page, we have an awesome season of concerts scheduled at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center for the 2011-12 Season. Please buy your tickets early, especially if you want to choose reserved seats. These concerts, as well as our monthly parties, are perfect opportunities to expose your friends and colleagues to jazz. New jazz fans are almost always the result of personal introductions to the music; so we are all ambassadors for jazz with the power to build its audience. Also in this issue on page 15, you will find our NEW Membership Levels and Application. These new levels are designed to more realistically offset the membership-related expenses of Jazz in AZ, while providing expanded benefits and new opportunities to help sustain the organization. If you are currently a member, your membership will continue through its term at the original level of benefits. You may choose to upgrade your membership at any time. Finally, it is with regret that I must step down as president of Jazz in AZ, effective September 15, 2011. Serving on the board of Jazz in AZ is a serious volunteer activity that requires many hours. Over the past two years, I am proud to have been instrumental in the developing the Organization's Strategic Plan, updating its By-Laws and addressing other issues of governance, as well as negotiating and vetting the lease for the Lewis NashJazz in AZ Center. Due to unforeseen changes in my business and educational professions, I will no longer be able to give Jazz in AZ the time that it requires and deserves. Steve Douglas, our vice president, will be ascending to the presidency. As you get to know Steve, you will undoubtedly be impressed by his extraordinary knowledge of jazz, his experience as a jazz presenter and musician, his service on arts councils, and his business acumen. He is stepping in at a time of momentous opportunity for Jazz in AZ and I know that he will have your support as he takes the baton. Thank you for the opportunity to have served this great Organization as its president, and I look forward to continuing as a director and supporting its important work. Sincerely, Dan Konzen

Authentic Brazilian group to perform at Sept. 18 JiA party By Joel Goldenthal Authentic Brazilian music will fill the air when the Tera Crisalida band takes the stage. at the Jazz in AZ Party on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 3-5 p.m. at Kazimierz World Wine Bar. The Kaz is a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages located at 7137 EVENT E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Admission to the public is $10 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply. Leader Tera Crisalida is of Brazilian heritage and was steeped in the culture of Brazilian music at an early age. She began playing guitar at 12 and has been playing and singing bossa nova and samba ever since. She has studied music in both Brazil and the U.S. and has performed in solo, duo, trio and full band settings for the last 20 years. Influenced by Antonio Carlos Jobim, João Gilberto, Dorival Caymmi, Cartola, Pixinguinha, Toquinho, Carlos Lyra, João Bosco and many others, she brings a fresh authentic sound to the well-known classics of Brazilian jazz and samba. Her repertoire includes more than 40 authentic Brazilian

songs, ranging from popular to less familiar, plus American standards arranged in a Latin style. Born and raised in the culture of Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian drummer/percussionist Miro De Sa is respected top musicians in his hometown of Rio de Janeiro and is uniquely qualified in the Brazilian music genre in our community. Originally from the northeast of the country, he learned very early about the culture and musical influence of that region, including the indigenous rhythm known as "baiao". He has been fortunate to play with and learn from some of the creators of the bossa nova style. Miro also studied jazz performance, graduating with honors in 1993 from the Percussion Institute of Technology at the Musicians Institute of Hollywood, Calif. Adrian Goldenthal has been playing bass since the age of 14, and has a reputation for playing with sensitivity and fluidity in a variety of Tera Crisalida musical styles. He plays regularly with Phoenix-based Cale Flamenco, the largest dance troupe of its kind in the world, to which he brings an innovative bass voice. He also performs

with singer-songwriter Nick Heward and many more artists in jazz and alternative genres. Adrian became fascinated with Brazilian music, and took advantage of the opportunity to study with Miro, with whom he has spent hundreds of hours playing and immersing himself in recordings by Brazilian masters. Joining the band for this Jazz in AZ party is accomplished multi-reed player Dan Pinson. He has appeared with and opened for artists ranging from Stevie Wonder to Spyro Gyra, Gato Barbieri, Gerry Mulligan and Latin music star Selena. He has performed in the U.S., Europe and Mexico in jazz clubs, festivals and schools, and appeared on television and radio, including a feature on Public Radio International's "Whaddaya Know with Michael Feldman." Pinson is a long-time roster artist for the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Dan Pinson and Via Libre's Latin Jazz CD, “South of The Border”(1997), documents his musicality and command of regional rhythms. He will be a colorful and energetic addition to the band. The combination of Tera's flawless Portuguese, warm vocals and rhythm guitar with her supporting cast of musicians will add up to an unforgettable performance. Don't miss it…and take this opportunity to introduce a friend or two to Jazz in AZ!

The Lewis Nash-Jazz in AZ Center to open by January 2012 It's Official! The lease is signed and construction improvements begin soon on the 2500 square foot Lewis Nash - Jazz in AZ education and performance center, on the corner of First Street and Roosevelt, in the heart of the Downtown Phoenix Roosevelt Row Arts District. This center will become a focal point for jazz in America's fifth largest city, with a commitment to educational and performance opportunities for young musicians interested in jazz and to cultivating a young audience for the future of jazz. It will also serve as a prime venue for noted local and touring jazz musicians, as well as a community center within the heart of a walkable neighborhood nationally known for its galleries, boutiques, award-wining restaurants and cultural events. Plans include a jazz gift shop and art exhibitions. You will have many opportunities to contribute ideas and support for this facility, as details unfold in early Fall. Prior to that, you are invited to contact Herb Ely, chairman of the Development Committee (602-230-2144 days, 602-279-9402 evenings, or email at brdlives@cox.net) and Joel Goldenthal, Executive Director of Jazz in AZ (602-750-7045 or email at joel@jazzinaz.org). News from Out & About

“Midnight in Paris” was a summer film hit in the U.S. and Paris, and is a theme that resonated during my annual two-month sojourn in the City of Light, where jazz experiences included “random acts of jazz” on street corners and pedestrian bridges, as well as in 20-some clubs. The hour of midnight in Paris also is when many “boeufs” begin, jam sessions so-named from the1930s when French and foreign musicians met to play at midnight on the rooftop of a restaurant called Le Boeuf. Other jams start as early as 9 p.m. The tradition of “buskers” (itinerant musicians) is global, the performers setting out a hat, cap or open instrument case to encourage donations. The music ranged from six-piece jazz bands to solo saxophonists with recorded accompaniment, various accordion players and even a roller-blading guitarist! Metro subway cars have hop-on musicians who favor jazz along with French favorites such as Sidney Bechet's “Petite Fleur” from the aforementioned film, and always “La Vie en Rose” and “Les Feuilles Mortes” (“Autumn Leaves”). Among the high points of my listening experiences was a concert by French pianist Philippe Duchemin, whose agility and creativity are absolutely dazzling. Merging his early classical roots with modern jazz, blues and soul, he conveys the joyous swinging energy of Peterson, his main influence. His new album is yet another reason to convey the title of heir to the Peterson throne. My review of “Massilia” is posted at AllAboutJazz.com, where my annual Paris Jazz Diary © soon will appear. Jazz Buzz: A celebration of life is scheduled on Sept. 25 to honor trumpeter Tom Miles, who died in July. Among those performing at the Musicians Union Hall will be Ron Carrow Big Band (directed by Tom Williams), Extreme Decibel Big Band, Steve Ansel & the Jackson Street Band, Ken Taylor's Trumpet Ensemble and the Frank Smith Group, followed by an open jam. Donations will benefit a youth music project.

Add two interrelated dates to your calendars: Sept. 27, Joey DeFrancesco Trio at the Rhythm Room; Joey tours globally but rarely performs in Arizona, even though his home base is Cave Creek. Soon after that, his father and first teacher, “Papa” John DeFrancesco will launch the Jazz in AZ season series at the Kerr Cultural Center on Oct. 5. (See Calendar for details.) Janice Jarrett, a vocal technique coach-lyricist in Tucson alerted me to a performance in Paris of Lou Tavano, a stunning young European vocalist. She uses her voice like an instrument, stretching creativity to the max and using scat effectively, not just to fill notes; like no other singer in current times. Janice had emailed me that, “Lou heard 'Phantoms' on Kenny Barron's release 'The Traveler,' which came out in France a few years ago, and tried to capture the lyrics (sung beautifully by Gretchen Parlato). But even her English-speaking friends were not sure of the words, so I emailed them to her. The lyrics were one of three for Kenny's music that he included in that CD. I've written over two dozen lyrics to his music.” She added, “A few years ago, a singer in Australia and one in Denver were releasing CDs around the same time, and both had chosen to include Kenny's 'Sunshower.' Like Lou, both found me through cyberspace. Pretty interesting to me, since I had written the lyrics decades before. (Jay Clayton recorded it many years ago.) I even heard a local jazz singer, John Ronstadt, sing it one night when I was hanging out in Tucson. Somehow it has apparently traveled the world. And a former member of my fivevoice group in L.A. in the '80s, Sunny Wilkinson, just sang some of my lyrics for George Cables' music, apparently with him playing, at the Port Townsend Jazz Camp.” Wilkinson is a former Phoenix resident. Jazz Scene: Several new venues have plumped up the scene during this summerinto-fall season. See Venues listing for details. Venue 104 (Performance Café), 940 E. University, Tempe, 480-256-0166, has

live jazz on Tuesdays, and also will offer theater and film. The owner is Michael Peck, former partner in ChyroArts and a Valley actor who recently was nominated for a Zoni Award. William Ravel is booking jazz there and at Winfield's. Also in Tempe, Boston's has an all-ages jam session on Fridays and Saturdays; The Fixx has an all-ages jam session on Wednesdays; and Dave's Electric Brew Pub resumes its weekly bookings on a different night. Studio Vino Wine Bar has Vintage Flight, a contemporary jazz duo, on alternate Wednesdays. Fired Up Grill in Chandler has the Aebi-Coulson Trio with Jim Nistico leading a jam on Sundays. In Scottsdale, Renegade Canteen has added weekend jazz after starting a Sunday jazz brunch earlier this summer. Listeners seeking New Orleans-Dixieland swing jazz have two new venues in Mesa, in addition to Chances Are on Sundays in Scottsdale: Pier D' Orleans on alternate Saturdays, and Pizza Mart on Wednesdays. Longtime Valley residents who remember the very special Reed Family Holiday Concerts through the years will be happy to learn that a version of those will be staged during 22 nights during the Desert Botanical Garden's annual Luminarias series. Margo, Francine and Michael Reed will be performing between Dec.1 and 29 (not nightly). These events sell out, so reserve early at 480481-8188.

Musicians' News: Renee Patrick's CD “Feel the Rain” is due for release this month, produced by Judy Roberts, who plays piano and sings a duet on the project, which was recorded at Orangewood Studios in Mesa. Also featured are guitarists Neal Seroka and Stan Sorenson, and saxophonist Greg Fishman. The title track is a song written for Renee, one of two originals among the standards she is known for, including “Autumn Leaves” (vocal duet with Roberts singing in French), “God Bless the Child” and “Good Morning, continued on page 5

'The Italian Tenors' together again RIFFS at Oct. 16 Jazz in AZ party

continued from page 4

By Joel Goldenthal 'The Italian Tenors” program has evolved into more than just two Italians playing jazz standards on tenors. It's two great friends playing a repertoire of traditional and popular Italian songs in a jazz style - - with lots of joy, creativity and enthusiasm in the process! Just in time for Columbus Day, “The Italian Tenors”: Jim Nistico and Jerry Donato, will be performing at Jazz in AZ party from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at EVENT Kazimierz World Wine Bar. The Kaz is a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Admission to the public is $10 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply. A mainstay of the Phoenix jazz scene, Donato has performed and recorded with many Valley favorites including Dennis Rowland, Khani Cole and Big Pete Pearson, and he is a charter member of Armand Boatman's "The BeBop Revolution.” He has enjoyed an extensive career in television studio performance; he performed on the Arsenio Hall Show and recorded soundtracks for CBS television's “Evening Shade,” as well as several TNT movies. In addition, Donato has been a firstcall reedman for Broadway and celebrity shows in the Valley since he arrived from his native Baltimore in 1983. AzJazz Magazine voted Donato as “Best Saxophonist.” In 2004, he released his CD, “It's a Cool Heat,” which included the final recording session with pianist Pete Jolly (read more about the CD at jerrydonato.com). He performs every Monday night at Kazimierz World Wine

“We get great response with 'The Italian Tenors'... We take our audience on a trip!" Bar in Scottsdale with Margo Reed, and also plays background jazz at Houston's in Scottsdale every Thursday through Saturday (with Wednesday resuming in the fall).

Jerry Donato

Jim Nistico

Born in Syracuse, Nistico started playing clarinet at the age of nine and switched to tenor sax when he was 15. His professional performance career began at age 16, and he has played with celebrity artists including Rosemary Clooney, Billy Eckstine, Jack Jones, Bob Hope, Natalie Cole, Lou Rawls, The Temptations and The Four Tops. Nistico has played the Syracuse Jazz Festival on three occasions with his Jazz Express band. The band is documented on the CD, "Jim Nistico Jazz Express: Live at the San Marcos." “Jerry and I met back in 1983' says Nistico. “He had just arrived in the Valley and was playing with the Tommy Dorsey Band. I played opposite him in the Bill Hunter Band in a big-band-battle at the Sundome. I was about to move back to Syracuse for a few years and Jerry took my chair in the band. “We get great response with 'The Italian Tenors',” says Nistico. We have a unique take on these songs and Jerry and I banter a lot. We take our audience on a trip! By the way, the idea for the project came from bassist Jack Radivich. When we started it for or five years ago, it was just Italian tenors playing standard tunes; but it has evolved into the repertoire that you'll hear at the party.” Supporting the duo is the rhythm section of Dave Henning-piano, Jack Radavich-bass and Tim Downs-drums. At the party, you can expect to hear swinging jazz arrangements of the theme from “The Godfather,” “Amore',” “Volare',” “Non Dimenticar,” “Al Di La,” “Three Coins in a Fountain,” “Mona Lisa” and more songs from the Italian hit list. For a video sample, visit jazzinaz.org and click on the October party link.

Heartache.” She also delivers pop hits such as “Every Breath You Take,” “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” and “Hello.” Judy and Greg perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival in northern California again this year, as well as being booked for the Newport Beach, CA, weekly series just before the festival. They will perform together in March for Jazz in AZ at the Kerr. Pianist Rachel Eckroth has returned to New York after thrilling Arizona audiences for the past several years. Dennis Rowland is touring Russia again his fall, as in past years. Contemporary-jazz saxophonist Marion Meadows is among the many musicians performing during the three weekends of the 25th annual Catalina Island Jazz Trax Festival. He will perform Oct. 14; more info at jazztrax.com Former Phoenix musician Gaynel Hodge (co-writer of “Earth Angel”) performed in July at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, joining Dr. John's set, which included guest spot by Trombone Shorty. Andy Ziker's book, “Drum Aerobics,” has placed second in the top five books in the 2011 Drum Magazine Drummies Poll. Ziker plays drums for the Thursday jam sessions at Pita Jungle in Chandler.

Quotable: A local jazz musician complained to a colleague about an unpaid booking with a singer, saying, “She still owes me 100 bucks.” The other musician quickly interjected, “And she still owes me two bars (music measures) from the last gig I did with her.”

Final Bar: Dick Knutson, Desert City Six leader-trombonist-cofounder of Arizona Classic Jazz Society, June 26 in Phoenix; Frank Foster, 82, saxophonistarranger-composer (“Shiny Stockings”), Count Basie alumnus, July 26 in Chesapeake, Va.;Gil Bernal, saxophonist, in Los Angeles; Tom Miles, 59, trumpet, in Phoenix; Ross Barbour, 82, original member of the Four Freshmen, Aug. 23 in Simi Valley, Calif.
