The Best of Both Worlds: Local and Destination Golf in One Incredible Package

orgive Talamore members if it sounds like they’re bragging as they reel off the countless amenities at their disposal. They can’t help that their membership holds such high value and all they really want to do after all is tell you just what you’ve been missing. There’s the award-winning Talamore Country Club in Ambler with it’s championship golf course, one of the finest practice facility in the tri-state area resort-style pool, state-of-the-art fitness center, Har-Tru tennis courts, and clubhouse mansion now offering four phenomenal, unique member dining areas, and then just 45 minutes away there’s Applecross Country Club in Downingtown boasting the area’s only Nicklaus Design, a practice facility rivaling its sister course’s, the widelyacclaimed Grove Area with its own resort-style pool, a sports pavilion, and lighted tennis courts. And then, with your jaw dropped and drool flowing freely, they’ll tell you there’s more. In the heart of arguably the top golf destination in the United States stands the Talamore Golf Resort, a 36-hole golf retreat boasting two of the top venues in the entire Pinehurst, N.C. area “Confidence, value and exceeding expectations are the cornerstones of

By Nate Oxman, Staff Writer what we strive for every day,” said Jon Hazelwood, General Manager at Talamore’s flagship property in Ambler, Pa. “With two premier clubs in Pennsylvania linked at just 45 minutes apart, and two world-class destination clubs in Pinehurst, North Carolina, it is hard to find a more compelling membership value.” The Resort Course at Talamore is a Rees Jones design that was quickly named “Best New Course in the South” by Golf Digest when it opened in 1991. Not only does it offer an excellent shot maker’s course that is carved out of the North Carolina Sandhills and features refreshing elevation changes, but thanks to the world-famous llama caddies, it also offers an unforgettable golf experience. Jones’s goal for Talamore was to put strategy, not length off the tee, in the forefront. While its length won’t wear you down - Talamore stretches to 6,840 yards from the gold tees yet has four sets of tees to accommodate all - its ability to require the golfer to think his way around the course and use every shot in his or her arsenal shows that Jones undoubtedly succeeded. Accuracy is essential from start to finish as both the fairways and greens, which are loaded with undulations, are well-guarded by bunkers and many

holes feature doglegs that will wreak havoc on wayward shots. Highlights include the fabulous 201yard par-3 second hole and its sinister set of bunkers protecting the front and right portions of the green and the par-3 fifth hole, which actually features two par 3s side by side, either of which could be in the rotation on a given day. Both greens are surrounded on all sides by bunkers, with the “left” version stretching to 184 yards and the “right” a more manageable 148. A demanding set of finishing holes includes the 444-yard par-4 16th, a slight dogleg left with a fairway sliced into three sections that packs a major punch from the gold tees at 444 yards, but still requires two well-placed shots from the blue (428 yards), white (398) or green (370) to secure a par.

The 426-yard 18th hole requires a tee shot over a lake to a fairway dotted with pot bunkers and then a lengthy approach into a green guarded by a gargantuan bunker to the left. Conveniently located across the street from the Resort Course is Talamore’s Mid South Club, an Arnold Palmer design that was ranked only behind the famed Pinehurst No. 2 on Pinehurst Magazine’s list of the top-ranked golf courses in the Pinehurst area. While the lone water hazard at Talamore is the aforementioned lake on the closing hole, the Mid South Club wows members and visitors alike with an array of daunting lakes and ponds. These include a large lake guarding the dogleg on the risk-reward 401-yard par-4 second hole, another forcing an all-carry short- to mid-iron at the picturesque par-3 sixth, a pond planted in front of the green at the aweinspiring 533-yard par-5 ninth hole, and a sizable hazard that makes hitting the peninsula fairway (the only safe miss off the tee is left where trees narrow the target even further) at the 398-yard par-4 16th a must before making another all-carry approach over water. Water also is a main feature of the splendid 435-yard par-4 home hole, where a lake looms to the right of the fairway and in front of the green, forcing two final precise shots to avoid finishing with a big number. Providing eye-popping views of the Resort Course as part of their exquisite accommodations, the

Talamore Golf Villas are an ideal place to rest and rejuvenate in between rounds. Visitors staying at the villas can take advantage of a full kitchen, washer/ dryer, two bathrooms, spacious living room and dining room areas, daily maid service, access to the Talamore pool and cabana, and much more in these two- or three-bedroom condominiums. For those looking for even more lavish lodging, the Lodges at Mid South houses 16 luxury condominiums, each of which offers 1,800 square feet of living space, including a full kitchen adorned with granite and stainless steel, a plasma TV, daily maid services, washer/dryer, queen size beds, front and rear porches, and, of course, breathtaking views of the Mid South Club. While Talamore members receive full access to the expansive Talamore Golf Resort in addition to the three private facilities in the Philadelphia area, vacation packages to the resort are available to the public. These include access to both the Resort Course and the Mid South Club as well as more than 20 partner courses including the decorated

Pine Needles and Mid Pines, both highly-regarded Donald Ross designs which have hosted numerous USGA championships, Tobacco Road Golf Club, one of America’s toughest courses, Dormie Club, North Carolina’s only Coore/Crenshaw design, and Pinehurst Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 8. Golfers throughout the tri-state area have listened to loyal Talamore members and are taking advantage of the Philadelphia area’s premier multi-club membership network and its incredibly affordable array of membership programs. They’d like you to do the same.

As we all probably know, most golfers love to spend many hours on the practice range trying to discover that prefect swing. Range time is always needed but today I have an idea for helping you to become the best putter you can be. Have you ever spent time on the putting green playing nine or eighteen holes and actually keeping your score? I am talking about really focusing on using one ball, picking out a hole to putt to and trying as hard as you would on the golf course to hit the best putt possible. Think about this, most golfers go to the putting green with three balls and work on their putting

stroke. I am all in favor of this kind of practice but how many golfers have spent an hour on the putting green playing eighteen holes with just one ball? Have you? Here is what I am suggesting. Take three balls and spend some time warming up your stroke. After you feel ready, take one ball and start to look around the green and create a nine or eighteen hole course to putt to. Have a score card with you and putt each hole just like you would if you were out on the course. I want you to read each putt, line up the ball and go through your routine exactly the same way on every putt. Challenge yourself to shoot the lowest score possible during play. As you do this you will find this exercise to feel very much like being on the course. This practice session will help you to really improve your putting along with keeping you very focused during each putt. If you play eighteen holes exactly as I have described you will find that, in the end, you will have been putting on the green and working on your game for at least 30 to 40 minutes. I hope this putting tip helps you with your game and remember, “Keep em’ in the Fairway.” —Lou

Keep Swinging in the Off-Season Fall is my favorite time to play golf. Not only are the colors on the course so vibrant, but the cooler air is a nice break from the hot summer days. Fall and winter is also a great time to work on your golf swing. You are not actively playing in any leagues or for big bucks on the weekends, so you can concentrate on fine tuning your swing. Take the time to reflect on your golf game from this season and evaluate the good and the not so good. Figure out the weakest parts of your game, long irons, shots from 100 yards and in, pitching or chipping and work on improving that in the off- season. My indoor/outdoor teaching facility Berkleigh is ready for the winter season. This facility gives me the ability to work with students on their games, even when it’s snowing or cold outside. We can open the garage door to see ball flight for long game as well as short game work, or we can close the door and work with the Opti-Shot simulator. The use of the simulator and the latest in video technology will break down swing faults and help to improve your swing mechanics. Repetitive motion is what we strive for in our swings, working Adrienne Hogan’s new indoor indoors will help you teaching facility concentrate on that motion. Other ways to improve your game is to work on the mental side of the game and your physical conditioning. Two of my favorite websites are Vision 54 and Titleist Performance Institute. Vision 54 co-owners Lynn Marriot and Pia Nelson, coaches for Annika Sorenstam and many more, have created a program designed to help golfers play better on the course. To not only swing better, be more fit, manage your mind, but to transfer these skills to the course. www.vision54.com The Titleist Performance Institute www.mytpi.com is the largest collection of golf-specific health and fitness information from the world’s leading experts in the game. The site has an incredible article library to help you with everything from fixing your slice to improving your flexibility. As a TPI Certified Instructor my students and I work on specific exercises to help improve their swings and become more fit in the process. So, just because it’s getting colder and darker earlier, don’t put your clubs in the closet for the year. Work on ways to improve your swing, your mind, your body and your game.

Greater Atlantic City Golf Association Announces Program to Promote AC Region as Golf Destination, Ron Jaworski Named AC’s Ambassador of Golf Atlantic City, New Jersey - The Greater Atlantic City Golf Association (GACGA) announced a new initiative in partnership with the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) to promote the Atlantic City region as the premiere golf destination. GACGA, in association with CRDA, would create a partnership through the NJ Dept. of Travel & Tourism, NJ Sports Exposition Authority and the Atlantic City Alliance to begin to proudly promote all aspects of the region as the East Coast’s premiere golf destination. Tom Sullivan, President of GACGA and GM for McCullough’s Emerald Golf Links, expressed his excitement and stated, “We have 18 golf courses and two golf packagers in the association and we know that through the development and marketing of a dynamic campaign, we can establish this region as a superior golf destination.

This new initiative will provide a powerful economic impact with a substantial return on the investment that will ultimately stimulate the Atlantic City marketplace and positively impact revenues through golf players visiting the region.” Sullivan continued, “Our distinctive and award-winning golf courses will be promoted and advertised as a destination with an enormous amount of advertising and marketing support. Golfers can enjoy the region’s most beautiful natural resources, including our beaches, as well as the boardwalk along our Jersey shore that is enhanced by the most exciting casinos and entertainment on the East Coast.” Targeted advertising messages in key markets will be created as part of the strategic plan. A new emphasis on social media will be launched to focus on golf while integrating the theme for Atlantic

City. The new GACGA Ambassador of Golf is former NFL quarterback, Ron Jaworski, who will also be featured as the celebrity spokesperson in the campaigns. Through this pilot program, golf enthusiasts and golf travelers will visit this region and contribute to the economic growth as they spend more than the average traveler and stay longer than the average visitor which will translate into millions of dollars in new revenue for the region. The Greater Atlantic City Golf Association currently has eighteen golf courses, all within a 60-mile radius, only minutes from the Atlantic City Casino Resorts and conveniently located near the Atlantic City International Airport, which makes our Golf Clubs the perfect destination on the East Coast. Kimberton, PA - Buck Jones captured his 3rd Philadelphia Senior Open Amateur Championship at Kimberton GC defeating Ken Mangin in a one hole playoff. Jones and Mangin both posted scores of 1-over par 71 to qualify for the playoff. The playoff started on the 516yard par-5, fifteenth hole and Jones was able to convert his birdie chance to claim the top prize. The victory for Jones was his seventh PPGA title also winning the Publinks Championship in 2007 and 2008, and teamed with Jim Yenser to win both the Philadelphia Better-Ball Championship in 2007 and the Publinks Better-Ball Championship in 2009. Jones, who also captured the title in 2005 and 2009, was first to post 71 and was the clubhouse leader before Mangin, playing in the final group, posted his 71 to tie. Jones’ round started slow with bogies on three of the first four holes. After a bogey at the 192 yard, par 3, fourth, Jones answered with a birdie on the 419-yard, par-4 fifth to get his round going in the right direction. Jones would post a bogey on hole seven and a birdie on the par-3 ninth to make the turn in 2-over par. Jones would bogey the difficult 208-yard, par-3, fourteenth before finishing strong with birdies on sixteen and seventeen for his 1-over par total of 71. Mangin was able to weather two

hen the Narragansett selected a name for a spectacular, unspoiled 38 square miles of their land far removed from any significant settlement, they chose Aquidneck or “floating land mass.” While that translation has been widely accepted as the more plausible, the other alleged meaning, “isle of peace,” is far more telling, especially for those unfamiliar with one of the country’s most stunning, and yes, peaceful, vacation spots.

17

tri-state golfer • fall 2012

While it is home to what was once one of the leading port cities in the early years of our nation, Aquidneck, known today as Rhode Island, and the city of Newport, serve as summer retreats for many New Englanders. They’ve been such hosts since Southerners began heading north to escape the summer heat in the middle of the 19th century. Naturally, the vacationers needed recreation. It’s prime location helped

Newport become the sailing capital of the country and polo, tennis, and golf, thanks to the construction of the famed Newport Country Club. As demand increased, more outlets were needed, and they popped up through the early 20th century. However, while those early clubs such as Newport CC, boast strong traditions and remain stout today, a relatively recent addition to the Newport recreation scene has combined unrivaled luxury and elegance with a family-friendly, communal environment. The brainchild of Philadelphian real estate developer Brian O’Neill, the Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth, R.I., has risen to ultra-elite status among Northeast U.S. recreation destinations. Locally, O’Brien achieved success transforming former factories in Conshohocken into office buildings and housing complexes, in effect contributing monumentally to the Montgomery County town’s recent residential and commercial boom, and financing similar construction in Bala Cynwyd and Valley Forge. The sale of a pair of those projects reportedly netted O’Brien over $160

million, undoubtedly aiding in the extraordinary expansion of the Carnegie Abbey Club. O’Brien opened the 400-plus acre resort in 2000, which includes an 18-hole golf course designed by Donald Steel in a breathtaking waterfront setting, a European-style spa, a pool dotted with 22 private cabanas, a yacht club with 110 boat slips, an Olympic-style equestrian center as well as eight miles of trails on property, a championship tennis facility with four Har-Tru tennis courts and two heated paddle courts for winter play, elegant dining options, and a variety of camps for children of all ages to enjoy every amenity. The aforementioned expansion is loaded with impressive features, including the dazzling crown jewel: the 220-foot Tower at Carnegie Abbey boasting 79 one- to three-bedroom, one- and twostory residences ranging in size from 900 to 8,500 square feet. With full concierge service and full access to all of the club’s amenities, and full views of Narragansett Bay the Tower, unveiled in 2010 is just one of the attractive residential choices at Carnegie Abbey.

“It’s really a spectacular building,” said Carnegie Abbey Private Estates Real Estate Sales Representative Ken Brennan. “Its for people who want a lifestyle that is relaxing, care free, where everything is taken care of. There is 24/7 concierge. If you’re coming in for the weekend you can call ahead or send us an email with what you want and we’ll run down to the grocery store and stock your kitchen for you and load up your refrigerator. Others include 21 masterfully designed single-family cottages, a variety of affordable rental properties, as well as vacant lots on property, and as of July, the alluring Newport Beach Club, “a classic New England seaside village,” on 150 waterfront acres overlooking Narragansett Bay awaits families to custom build their dream vacation homes within the eastern seaboard’s premier sporting club. They’ll receive access to all of Carnegie Abbey Club’s amenities and room service to boot. With recreational activities at their fingertips, Beach Club residents will bask in three and a half-story homes with wraparound porches, two-story family rooms and a private beach.

Such an awe-inspiring setting, only an hour from Boston, less than four hours from New York City and less than six hours from Philadelphia, could only be found on the “isle of peace.” For more information, including rentals, sales, and property tours, about the Carnegie Abbey Club, visit carnegienewport.com or call 401.682.6000 For more information about O’Neill Properties, visit oneillproperties.com

Titleist Introduces 913 Drivers With More Performance Designed and built for more speed and more distance, the new Titleist 913 drivers deliver more performance with the most precise fit available to all serious golfers through an unparalleled combination of new innovations and Titleist’s industryleading SureFit Tour hosel technology. Featuring a high-speed, forged face insert, the new Titleist 913D2 and 913D3 drivers are the fastest, most consistent drivers Titleist has ever designed, delivering maximum ball speeds over a large area of the face. They are also Titleist’s most playable and forgiving drivers, primarily the result of improved launch conditions from a lower, more optimal center of gravity (CG) position, a new rear SureFit Tour weight and the fitting precision provided by the SureFit Tour adjustable hosel. “The new 913D2 and 913D3 drivers offer the highest performance of any adjustable drivers on the market, particularly when it comes to speed and forgiveness,” said Dan Stone, Vice President

of Research and Development, Titleist Golf Clubs. “Every serious golfer, from tour players to amateurs of all skill levels, will experience more distance potential and better driving performance with 913.” The 913D2 driver features a 460cc fullpear shaped head designed for maximum forgiveness and a slight draw bias, while the 913D3 has a 445cc classic-pear shape that is forgiving with tour-inspired workability. Unlike the 910 series, both D2 and D3 models now offer the same launch and spin characteristics to provide maximum fitting flexibility. “Golfers can now choose their 913 model based on size or shape preference, amount of forgiveness or workability, and amount of draw bias,” said Stone. “They can then dial-in their launch and spin settings precisely using the SureFit Tour hosel.” Fourteen players put new 913 drivers into play the first week they were available at the PGA Tour’s AT&T Classic in late June. Twenty-six players used 913 drivers about a month later at the PGA Championship,

and the momentum only continues to build. Players gaming 913 drivers have already combined for five victories on the PGA, European and Web.com Tours, including victories by Rory McIlroy (PGA Championship) and Nick Watney (The Barclays) in two of the past three weeks. “The new 913 drivers further define our commitment and success in providing players with the game’s highest performing clubs with preferred looks, sound and feel,” said Steve Pelisek, General Manager, Titleist Golf Clubs. “Our previous generation 910 drivers proved to be the most innovative drivers in our history. With 913, we’ve raised the bar even higher.” MORE SPEED WITH TITLEIST’S FASTEST FACE: The 913D2 and 913D3 (continued on p.21) tri-state golfer • fall 2012

Visit us on the web limerickgolfclub.com theloftatlimerick.com • thesandtrapgrille.com drivers deliver faster, more consistent ball speeds across the face due to a new forged, variable thickness face insert, the fastest face insert ever designed by Titleist Golf Club R&D. The 913’s 6-4 Titanium face insert has a central thick portion that mirrors the outer face profile. As you move out from the center, however, the insert is thinner and organically tapered so that it perfectly matches up with the body thickness at the face perimeter. It is also 2 grams lighter than the 910’s face insert, allowing that mass to be redistributed to the new SureFit Tour weight low on the clubhead. “We are always engineering our center face ball speed to the maximum, but the new insert allows for a more consistent deflection across the whole face which gives us more ball speed and more distance across a larger area of the face,” Stone said. “The face insert is not a symmetric geometry, it’s a complex structure and it required us to really think outside the box. We had to invent a new process just to produce it.” The new insert has increased the

21

tri-state golfer • fall 2012

maximum ball speed area up to 11 percent from Titleist’s previous generation 910 drivers, resulting in upwards of 2 mph of additional ball speed in certain hit locations (which translates to up to 4-6 additional yards). “It’s faster on heel and toe hits, and I think that’s something everyone can understand,” Pelisek said. “When we first brought these drivers out on tour, that’s what we heard back from the players. Even tour players hit it on the heel and toe on occasion and they came back and said ‘Wow, I’m getting a lot more distance on those off center hits.’ “ MORE DISTANCE THROUGH IMPROVED LAUNCH CONDITIONS: More optimal center of gravity (CG) locations further maximize the distance potential of 913D2 and 913D3 drivers while providing stability and forgiveness. While past generation D2 and D3 models each featured different launch and spin characteristics, the new 913D2 and 913D3 drivers have equivalent launch and spin because of CG positions that are equally low. To accomplish this, the CG in

the 913D2 was lowered to produce similar launch and spin to 913D3. “You have speed around the face, you have the ability to reduce spin and you have the SureFit Tour hosel to adjust launch - that’s a pretty powerful combination to increase distance,” Pelisek said. To help create the 913’s more optimal CG, Titleist engineers further improved the casting and polishing process to produce an ultra-thin crown that allowed for more discretionary mass to be redistributed low and deep in the head. The 913 drivers also feature a lower, flatter sole profile than 910 and a new SureFit Tour weight on the rear sole that further optimizes the CG for speed and forgiveness. The SureFit Tour weight has a new, flat geometry with a screw that holds the weight in place but does not extend up into the driver head, contributing to a lower overall CG. The standard SureFit Tour weight has increased from 7 grams to 9 grams, taking the 2 grams of weight saved from the new forged face insert and reapplying it in this lower, more optimal position.

Suggested retail price of the new SkyCaddie Breeze is only $229.95, and it is offered with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee. Until December 31, 2012, consumers purchasing the Breeze will receive $250 in Hotel Savings Bucks, which may be used to enjoy savings of up to 40% off the guaranteed lowest rate available at over 15,000 hotel properties worldwide, including 20 great hotel brands. Callaway Announces Retail Availability of X Utility Prototype Irons Callaway Golf Company announced today that the X Utility Prototype irons, available only to tour professionals up to this point, will be released commercially in the United States and available at select retailers as of December 1. The announcement was made at the Company’s national sales meeting, taking place this week north of San Diego. Callaway’s X Utility Prototype Irons were designed by Roger Cleveland and introduced to the Company’s Tour staff prior to the 2012 U.S. Open. Their introduction sparked a wave of interest on the PGA Tour that extended beyond

Callaway’s staff professionals and the clubs soon stood atop the list of utility irons in play at PGA Tour events. Designed to replace the 2-, 3- and 4-irons that many players have been gravitating away from over the last several years, the X Utility Prototype Irons found an immediate home in the bags of several of the world’s best players, including Phil Mickelson, Branden Grace and Ernie Els. Els employed all three X Utility Prototypes en route to capturing his fourth Major victory last month at The Open Championship, held at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. “Utility irons are not new to the game, but the X Utility Prototypes feature a state-of-the-art forged construction that delivers a combination of distance, speed, feel and control that has been lacking in this important area of a player’s bag for some time,” said Luke Williams, Callaway’s Global Director of Woods and Irons. “Many players have replaced their long irons with hybrids, which are easier to hit, but the X Utility Protoypes offer a level of precision that our Tour staff has been very pleased with, plus these clubs offer a tighter dispersion than hybrids on mishits. The amount of excitement that our X Utility Prototype Irons have generated on Tour and among the avid followers of golf equipment has been overwhelming and underscores our commitment to develop and introduce exciting new designs through work with the best players in the world.” Available in three lofts (18, 21, 24 degrees), the Callaway X Utility Prototype Irons are made with a hollow forged construction of 1020 carbon steel, a tungsten sole to precisely dial-in the CG location, and a high-strength maraging steel face that promotes high ball speeds. Each iron features also features removable weights on the sole that range from two to eight grams in two-gram increments that allow players to make swingweight adjustments to fit individual needs surrounding specific length, shaft and grip options. Callaway’s X Utility Prototype Irons will feature a new product introduction retail price of $199/steel and $229 with graphite shafts. tri-state golfer • fall 2012
