My Journey Home Seminar Notes

Introduction This display book will show my thoughts, ideas and processes for the assignments completed during the Introductory Studies Unit. I aim to show a progression in my technical abilities and methods of visual communication. The first assignment set was My Journey Home, where I had to create a personal response to my journey to and from university based on the style of a map. The second assignment was Life and Death which required me to visually reinterpret two images to appear on the back of a lorry’s doors. The left side was to represent life while the right represents death. Through the Letterbox, was my last assignment where it was imperative to read through articles (Article 3) and research a chosen topic and inform the chosen target market about the issue through a medium that would fit through a letterbox.

I broadened my thoughts and decided to look at other types of maps and ways to visually communicate maps and map styles. I like the idea of using organs to map my journey and link my body parts to represent different factors and characteristics of my journey. However, I feel the topic and idea won’t directly correlate to my thoughts along the route. Another idea would be to look at sounds and actions, possibly even weather conditions and population densities. This will be explored throughout the assignment.

My Journey Home Current Examples

From existing works and examples, I was influenced to create a design that was very different yet SPECIFIC to myself. Use of scale was always going to be key which meant my data gathering had to be precise and exact. Without the use of Google, I was inspired through the help of Andy to use books and how to use the library’s resources to find relevant books and articles. My target audience is most likely going to be students as my journey will most likely be specific to myself but the journey would appeal to students that regularly take the bus to and from university and hopefully it will effectively and visually communicate my intentions to answer the brief.

Using shapes and ideologies of circles joined together by lines might be an interesting way to illustrate my own personal journey. This could maybe be done by dividing my findings

into sections and gathering data as shown on the page to the right. I could maybe look at dividing the sections up and using pictures to represent each occurrence.


My Journey Home Primary Research

I looked at different methods of transportations and modes of transport that require some sort of mapping system to get around. There were also other factors that

came into consideration about what happens on these journeys such as playing music or listening to conversations. These formed sound waves and could be explored.

This was the front cover of the map book. The pink hues and use of lines and circles to join everything and reflect some sort of mind map is something that I will use as inspiration in my final design.

The pink line of the U1 is the basic shape of my route to and from university. This is the shape I will look at using in my design to make it a more personal and specific response. However I would make it more geometric to fit my design.

This idea focused on using a heat map style design where I focused on using the colours (red, orange, yellow, green and blue) to represent the density on frequency of occurrences and populations within each area.

Firstly, I looked at the movement of the bus and how frequently it reached the speed limit, slowed down and stopped. Every time the bus stopped I seemed to get distracted by what was happening at each location. This could potentially be documented to make my journey a more personal response and meet the brief.

After doing my first trip to uni I found that there were not enough factors to obtain enough data so I looked at more factors as you can see on the bottom left.

This idea works relatively well but the use of a heat map does not directly link to stopping and going. I could potentially use the idea of how many times the bus stops and visualize it in a different way, which will be explored throughout my development.

This idea focused on mapping the human body in relation to my journey.

I thought this was smart but I did not like the fact that the idea did not match my thoughts on my journey home. I will however, use the idea of having something represent my journey.

My Journey Home Feedback and Research

From the first crit, I gathered that my idea did not communicate anything and just looked aesthetically pleasing. The scale was disproportionate and I was advised to research into colours and adjust the scale to create a balance.

Complimentary colour contrasts are something I will explore based on feedback in my crit and the semiotics seminars.

I looked at different shapes and their geometric positions to lead the viewers eye from one point to another to further emphasise my story.

Using 3D blocks could be a cool idea to make sections bold and important. This was inspired from the seminar about semiotics.

I originally looked at the design as being just one colour and only one out of the four shapes. As a visual aesthetic I found that the design looked better as a four. However, the design did not effectively communicate and

show the message i was trying to get across. I could maybe change this by using a key and developing the design further, as I have done.


The design is still slightly confusing and shows no communication. I explored the idea of using a maze as finding my way to university was slightly confusing. However it is not that evident without an explanation.

This shows that a key is imperative and a less complex design with fewer shapes and line thickness’s will help make my journey more specific and effectively communicate my intentions.

During my final submission for this assignment, I was encouraged to alter the colours to make them more approporiate and link directly. Therefore, I used the colours of the bus that I take to and from university. The colours and pallette do appear fairly feminine so I could maybe alter it again slightly.

Experimenting with a more tonally contrasted design could make a more bold statement as it encourages the viewer to look at the density of the tones as well as the size. AUB

I started looking at ways to convey a 3 three dimensional illusion to take the viewer on a journey. This idea was based on the seminars with Amanda on Semiotics and creating illusions. In a sense, inviting the viewer into the scene. Some of the ideas are quite controversial and touchy but I personally feel it would make the viewer think twice, although it could be less provocative and forward. Based on the feedback, the ideas were good but I think I might look into other subject areas such as animal cruelty. From this idea generation I’ll take on the idea of portraying one image that leads the viewer from left to right, just like the movement a car would take, if it were to overtake.

The idea was to portray an elephant going from its natural habitat to the zoo where it would spend the rest of its life in captivity, similar to that of death. The use of temptation and encouragement would trap them in a place they didn’t want to be in, just like that of overtaking a car and crashing

Based on the feedback I received, I was advised to look at incorporating a method that encouraged the elephant to go, somewhat like a motive, but also show what the consequences would be if they took it. Almost as if it was risk they were willing to take.

Looking at ways about how I can show a divide between rich and poor. This said, I have come to the conclusion that the rich over shadow the poor so I divided to use a sticker with an image or graphic idea being layered above the less fortunate representation to show their dominance.

This idea does not however, show what people are going to do and has no destination so I will develop the idea of showing a divide throughout the assignment.

Summary of short film: Those who come from wealthy families and high socio-economic classes are likely to thrive off their families connections and remain wealthy. Your qualification is not all that important and it is more about your connections and who you know. The minimum wage is not matching the rate of inflation and therefore the poor are getting poorer and rich are getting richer. Fluctuations in market forces and Government policies are factors that are causing a rise in inequality.

I made a mini mock-up of my final design to test the idea and see if it works. The pull tabs would end up folding and becoming flimsy so I will extend the length of the insert to make the design appear more rigid and structured.

The idea with the two silhouette figures works well and will be on my final design. They are bold and simplistic and clearly demonstrate the message of giving but the user is the one who controls that link by pulling each card.

The divide between socio-economic classes is forever increasing. The rich are simply getting richer and the poor, poorer. In 2013 alone, ÂŁ24bn was lost due to tax avoidance and evasion. This shows the wealthy are avoiding taxation to increase their wealth which leaves the lower classes struggling more. So far the richest 1% own more than 50% of global wealth which puts into perspective how the vast majority of the population are incresingly struggling through economic downturns. The more the divide between socio-economic classes expands, the more likely a recession is to occur. The more prosperous people and organisations have teamed up with other mergers and globalised themselved to benefit from cheap labour such as Foxconn in China who treat workers in many inhumane ways. Suicide nets and overtime hours of up to 92 hours have been recorded. Cheap labour increases their profits and they get richer while the less fortunate struggle. However there is some good as shown below.
