THE BIRTHDAY WEEKEND Time never stands still and six years has passed since the first, and only copy, of this book was produced. A further six years of memories, family arriving and leaving; just all part of a growing family. Originally conceived to be a celebration of both my parents Doreen and Bill turning 80, this volume was to be a visual record of their amazing lives. The kernel for this project was the simple desire to bring together all the disparate images of our family history. They had been distributed amongst various albums, boxes, cupboards or hung on walls. I thought this book would become a simple snapshot of our family, it has become so much more. The project also proved much bigger than imagined, and its completion was long overdue when my mother passed away before ever seeing the finished book. The desire to record the love my parents had for each other and their family had become even greater. This book of our family’s history is aimed to record just one small part of the web of lives. It is unfortunate that most of the hopes, dreams, lives and stories of those who have already passed on, are now lost to us. Hopefully with this book we may gain a small insight into our connected dreams as every one of us has a story to tell. Included are our family trees, each of us is just a single leaf in a tangle of intertwined branches. This book also became a journey into discovering not only more of who we are, but also who I am. I know at times this project has driven my parents to distraction yet it has also stimulated the re-telling of stories, and deepening our connection to one another by re-discovering our shared memories. None of us live our lives in isolation. There is a theory, postulated by Karinthy, that we all part of a giant, connected web of human existence. The true measure of this connectedness is ‘no person on earth is more than six steps away from any other person on this planet.’ The book has been laid out in a fairly logical manner, or at least logical in my mind. The Scriven and Knight family trees are followed by early images of the seperate families. The nexus of these four trees occurred when Bill and Doreen married in 1954. From then onwards the connections continued to branch with children, grandchildren and great–grandchildren. The book then separates into the successive decades since my parents marriage over 60 years ago. A record of relatives, family and friends these snapshots in time include numerous social events such as weddings and parties. The appendix incudes further realted family trees, extra details, images and connected snippets. In the process of creating this book many stories have surfaced, which is slowly coalescing into yet another book. This volume is more than a simple photo album, it is a snapshot of the web of our existence which continues to grow beyond time.
