How is 4G Speed working in India? Speed on 4G network is the talk of the town but the question of its consistency is still in the mind of the users. A recent study by Ookla, a global network intelligence player, reveals that 4G speed is improving in India but at a slow pace in comparison to the rest of the world. It also states that India ranked 131 out of 145 countries in terms of mobile internet speed whereas the country ranked 77 when it comes to fixed broadband speed. Ookla also reports that there is a significant rise of 120.1 percent inaverage download speed on fixed broadband connection in India which is a positive sign in terms of 4G speed improvement. It is also noticed that the network of Reliance Jio is performing quite well in broadband segment and has all the capability to become the top operator in India. When it comes to subscribers, Reliance Jio has added more than 8.4 million subscribers in the month of August alone taking its overall tally to348.2 millionsubscribers.

In comparison to Reliance Jio, Airtel has 327.9 million subscribers whileVodafoneIdea in combined has a user base of 375 million.Still a long way to cover for India as it stands behind its neighbouring countries in terms of 4G download speeds. Though 4G download speed is improving, still India (9.93Mbps) lags behindSri Lanka (13.95 Mbps), Pakistan (13.56 Mbps) and Myanmar (15.56 Mbps). There has been an increase of 6 per cent from March 2019 to June 2019 in terms of wireless and fixed line broadband. As per the latest data of telecom regulatorTRAI, India has more than 665.3 millionweb connections. As people are switching fromnarrowband (70.72 million) to broadband, the numbers of web connections will increase further in coming days. Web connections that have download speed less than 512 Kbpsis considered asnarrowband. In its recent advisory, TRAI has asked the operators to provideminimum speed of 2 Mbpson a web network.

As per the reports of TRAI, Delhi with 33.75 million has the highest number of broadband connectionsfollowed by Tamil Nadu (32.24 million) and Maharashtra (31.25 million). These numbers of broadband connection in Delhi has been placed in the category of an urban area. There is a stiff competition between top players Airtel and Reliance Jio over providing fastest downloading speed and the 4G availability. Though, Airtel has topped the chart in offering fastest downloading speed, but lagged behind Reliance Jio in 4G availability in India. Currently Reliance Jio stands tall with97.8 per cent of 4G availability in last six months. As per the reports of OpenSignal report, Airtel with 53 points is quite ahead of Reliance Jio, Vodafone and Ideain the category of video watching experience. But when it comes to Voice app experience, Vodafone outclassed other key players like Airtel, Idea, Reliance Jio and BSNL. The report is based on the users’ experience on popular social media applications in India like WhatsApp, Skype and Facebook Messenger.
