7th ANNUAL REPORT January 27, 2019

Annual Report 2019

Senior Warden’s Report Trinity†St. Peter’s enjoyed a year of significant transition during 2018, positioning us to move forward to grow as a center for worship, performance of the arts, and a resource for our surrounding community. The most important job of the Bishop’s Committee is to serve as Stewards. As much as we can, we take care of the interests of this congregation and this huge building. We especially serve as stewards of Trinity†St. Peter’s resources. This is not a wealthy church, so the Bishop’s Committee has to keep a close watch on every penny. More than a quarter century ago, at the old St. Peter’s out in the Richmond District, I served as Junior Warden of the Vestry. Our Senior Warden was a woman named Hester Kenneth. Now, just as it is for probably every church at any given moment, we were going through very difficult times. Hester became my dear friend, and she taught me a lot about what it means to be a Steward for the church. Well, all these years later, Hester has passed away, and in 2018 we learned that her estate had left St. Peter’s a sizable bequest. As a result of her remembering the church in her will, Trinity†St. Peter’s no longer faces the large deficit it did just a year ago. It will be up to the new Bishop’s Committee to continue to serve as careful Stewards to keep our budget in the black. The greatest milestone we passed during 2018 was moving back into the main church after an absence of more than nine years. Now, it’s going to take time to recover from the church being closed for that long, but we are slowly attracting newcomers and we have had several concerts in the church to show the community that we’re back. As word continues to spread, we expect that the church will again become a popular venue for weddings, concerts and other community events. Another important advance we’ve made also traces back to the old St. Peter’s location in the Richmond. As you already know, in the past few years we restored the Rectory and created permanent housing for the Trinity†St. Peter’s priest. Behind the Rectory was the old St. Peter’s parish hall, which had stood vacant for more than a decade and had fallen into

serious disrepair. This past year we undertook renovation of that building, and we got the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to rezone the building for use as office space. Now we will be able to rent out the space to one or more nonprofit organizations, and this will give the church a permanent source of revenue to keep our budget balanced. I’d like to especially acknowledge Terry Speiker and Bill Brumfield for shepherding this project and putting our church on solid footing. But aside from just taking care of ourselves and acting as stewards for this church, Trinity†St. Peter’s continued to reach out as much as it was able to give support to people in need. I’d like to acknowledge the Community Action Team for helping to feed people at Open Cathedral in the Civic Center as well as those who get meals at Old First Church. The Community Action Team also provided tremendous support for Street Soccer, a program that helps homeless or underhoused youth. Scott DeBonville and Amanda Aweh led the Community Action Team. Amanda moved away to New York, and Greg Potts stepped up to help lead this important ministry. We have so many volunteers at Trinity†St. Peter’s that I am unable to name them all. There is the Choir, which spends countless hours rehearsing so that they can make our Sunday Eucharist a beautiful choral celebration every week. There is the Altar Guild, which provides flowers and sets up the wine, the bread and everything else we use for a church service. There are the volunteers who serve at the Altar each week, preparing Communion for us all and assisting the priest in the service. We have Lectors who read the lessons and prayers, Ushers who greet us as we enter the church and help us in the pews. We have to especially thank all the volunteers who provide Coffee Hour each week, where our worship service continues on a much more personal, one-to-one basis. We have volunteer Gardeners who nurture our plants and flowers, which are a treasure for the surrounding community. And I have to thank every single member of this congregation. You each represent us all when you leave this place each Sunday and go about your normal affairs. You each help give us all a reputation for good in the city. Quite often, when I tell people that I go to Trinity†St. Peter’s, they say, “Oh yes—I know such-and-such person from that church. They’re great people.”

So, as Terry and I hand off our responsibilities to the leaders of the next Bishop’s Committee, we feel confident in the church’s future. As the church’s leaders continue to serve as good Stewards, Trinity†St. Peter’s will thrive. Thank you. Patrick Andersen Senior Warden

Junior Warden Report TERRY SPEIKER

In 2018, the congregation of Trinity St. Peter’s was very busy, providing hundreds of hours in community service, fellowship, congregational support, worship and church leadership. For the multitude of good works and kind acts performed during the past year, there are many in our church community to thank, including……. • Pastor Trish, for her service to the congregation of TSP and the larger community in San Francisco. She set an example for us through her servant-leadership and spiritual direction and we are very grateful. We wish her well as she seeks out her next area of church or spiritual service. • Our Taize officiants, Sandy Kameron and Bruce Huston, who bring calm and spiritual reflection to TSP at each mid-week service, and to Robert Gurney for the grace his music brings to those who attend. • The members of the Altar Ministry, the Readers and Lectors, the Ushers, Greeters and Tour Guides and those who minister at Healing Altar all have helped Pastor Trish make worship at TSP a welcoming and uplifting spiritual experience. Volunteers included Steve Roger, Murrey Nelson, Patrick Anderson, George Teekell, Sandy Kameron, Jay Hoffman, Jill Thompson, Greg Potts, Marina Anderson, Michael Wolff, Terry Speiker, David Cunningham, Bill Brumfield, Amanda Aweh, Bob Brundage, Mike Chambers, Louis Cortelleso, Cynthia Cravens, Claire Cunningham, Steve DeGracia, Scott DeBonville, Sherry Hawley, Jay Hoffman, Bruce Huston, Roger LaClear, Jimmy McConnell, and Pat and Bill St. John. • The Altar Guild, who beautifies our worship space every week. They have donated their artistic talents to decorate St. Peter’s Hall for special events and Sunday Coffee Hour and this year began providing

the food and service for one “Bring and Share” Coffee Hour each month. Members of the Guild include Jill Thompson, Jay Hoffman, Louis Cortellesso, Bob Brundage, Sherry Hawley and Margaret Gwathmey. • The Men’s Group, led by Patrick Anderson, who provided the food and service for one Bring and Share Coffee Hour each quarter, and met monthly to consider the world, grow in grace and provide spiritual assistance and support to their members. • The Hospitality Committee, led by Cynthia Cravens, who provided coffee hour set up, clean up and tasty treats and food goodies after the 11:00 am Sunday service as well as for special events, receptions and teas. Bakers, cooks and servers include Eula Loften, Marina Anderson, Murrey Nelson, Terry Speiker and Bill Brumfield. Many congregation members also contributed food for Bring and Share events and weekly coffee hour, in addition to the committee members. These contributors included David and Trish Cunningham, Steven DeGracio, “Tuffy” Eldridge, Margaret Gwathmey, Jane Hansen, Joyce Huston, Molly and James Olivas, Lynnie Abendroth, George Teekell, Bill Barnaby and Paul Nettleman. • The Bishop’s Committee members, who provided fiscal, administrative and property management services and oversight to TSP and supported Pastor Trish in her work. Members included Patrick Anderson, Senior Warden, Terry Speiker, Junior Warden, Michael Chambers, Treasurer, Lois M. Webb, Archivist and CoSecretary, Sandy Kameron, Co-Secretary, Justin Kleinwaks, Scott DeBonville, Amanda Aweh, Murrey Nelson and Steve Roger. John Cumming acted as our legal counsel whenever that was necessary. During this past year, we were sad to wish goodbye to both Amanda and Justin, as their jobs and lives took them out of the Bay Area and away from TSP. Their contributions to the TSP community will remain long after they have left us!!

• The Community Action Team continued TSP’s tradition of service to persons living on the margins in the larger San Francisco community by participating in and sponsoring Youth Soccer events, making and serving suppers to the homeless at Old First Church, making sandwiches and lunches for Open Cathedral, volunteering at the San Francisco Night Ministry, ministering to persons who are incarcerated and supporting teens in foster placement through mentorships, cards and letters. Members of the CAT and other TSP volunteers working on these projects included Gregg Potts, Scott DeBonville, Karen Helgoth, the Reverend Nancy Pennekamp, Amanda Awah, Murrey Nelson, Cynthia Cravens, Bruce and Joyce Huston, Wayne Garrett, Reverend Trish Cunningham and David Cunningham and Jane Hansen. • Communication about TSP and to our worshippers is of critical importance. To Brother K and Cynthia Cravens go many thanks for their exacting and creative work on the church newsletter, weekly bulletin and website, to Mike Chambers for recording sermons, music and worship services and keeping us visible on social media and to Murrey Nelson for her work in updating the TSP “Members of the Congregation” listing. • Making sure the congregation remembers one another on special occasions, we have Murrey Nelson and Steve Rogers to thank for their lovely and timely birthday cards and well wishes. We also have Steve Rogers to thank for breathing new life into the tradition of TSP’s Circle Suppers in 2018. • Worship services would be a much less uplifting and spiritual experience without the incredible music provided by TSP’s Choir and the artistic genius of our Music and Choir Director, Robert Gurney. Members of the choir include Lynn Abendroth, Scott Davidson, Karen Stella, Sandy Kameron, Michael Morris, Molly Olivas, Elizabeth Roddy, George Teekell, Thomas Wade and Erika Weil. This year TSP wished farewell to Jessie Buddington as he left for career opportunities in

New York. His beautiful voice may be gone to us for now, but he is not forgotten!! The members of the Building Committee, led by George Teekell, and supported by Naomi Miroglio at our architectural firm ARG, worked on the seismic strengthening and renovation project at TSP and the application for the National Fund for Sacred Places Grant award. In addition to George, members of the committee include Terry Speiker, Michael Morris, Patrick Anderson, Lois M. Webb and Bill Brumfield. Thanks also go to Alex Huang and Naomi at ARG and Mike Chambers who assisted Terry Speiker in writing the grant application for the National Fund Award, which TSP received at the end of 2018. The award of $80,000 will assist us in building new ADA restrooms and constructing other safety and accessibility features in the church. A special thanks goes to Bishop Marc Andrus and members of his administration, including Canon Abbott Bailey and Jennifer Seaman, for their support and guidance as we prepared to submit this grant and to Chad Martin at the National Fund for his wise advice and constant support through the process. TSP has a bounty of buildings and properties to maintain. With all these properties there’s lots of upkeep and diligent caretaking work to be done. Special thanks go to Pastor Trish for her leadership, along with the Bishop’s Committee, in remodeling the old St Peter’s Parish Hall. During 2018, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors rezoned this facility so that it can be rented to non-profits. The money from rental oncome will contribute to the operating budget of TSP and make the church more financially secure. The Bishop’s Committee is currently in the process of seeking tenants for this property. During 2018, many thanks for building and grounds maintenance, physical caretaking and heavy lifting, painting, plumbing, wood working and restoration, Christmas and seasonal decorating and undecorating, etc, etc…… go to Mike Chambers, David Miles, TSP’s

Sexton and newly appointed Building Manager, David Cunningham, Sandy Kameron and Bill Brumfield. Without their “behind the scenes” efforts, we would be worshipping and congregating in much less comfortable and well-cared surroundings!! • TSP’s gardens have become a “thing of beauty” in the neighborhood, so special thanks for their hard work and creative hands go to Karen Stella and Bill Wakefield. Thanks also to Louis Cortellesso, Sherry Hawley and Chuck Woods for watering assistance during the dry months of the year. As you read through this list, a picture of a vibrant and giving church community emerges. Your charitable and giving spirits are an amazing force…..Thank You!

Terry Speiker This report is respectfully submitted by Terry Speiker, Junior Warden, with information and assistance provided by many members of TSP. Thank you for all the help I had in compiling it.

Organist-Choir Director Annual Report for 2019 Robert Gurney, Minister of Music 2018 was a banner year for Trinity-St. Peter’s. Most significant for the music program, was our return to Trinity Church. After nine years of worshipping in the Chapel and St. Peter’s Hall, our spirits were once again lifted by the architectural splendor, sumptuous acoustic, and the warm sounds of our E.M. Skinner organ, which so effectively accompanies the Choir and encourages our congregational singing. With the church open to the public again, we launched The Trinity Center for the Arts. We welcomed the internationally renowned musicians of Chanticleer and The New Century Chamber Orchestra in residence, founded the Art Gallery Imago Dei in the newly renovated Great Hall downstairs, and saw the return of performances of The San Francisco Lyric Chorus, our community chorus in residence, in its 25th year. On Sunday, September 23, Chanticleer honored us with a benefit concert, filling the church with people and their unique choral magic. On December 10 they presented their intimate Salon Christmas Concert. They wanted to feature our E.M. Skinner organ, and graciously invited me to perform, alternating with their talented Music Director, and fine organist, William Fred Scott. On Saturday, December 1, the San Francisco Girl’s Chorus presented their Christmas Concert, filling the church to capacity. We celebrated Good Friday and Pentecost with the choir and congregation of our neighbors, St. Luke’s, on Van Ness Avenue. There was much joy in the singing of the choirs, and I was thrilled to be making music with my good friend from college, their Director of Music, Steve Repasky. This Fall we launched a First Sundays Evensong/Organ Recital Series. Members of the San Francisco Lyric Chorus joined with the Choir of TrinitySt. Peter’s in performing Evening Canticles by Ralph Vaughan Williams, George Dyson, and the magnificent Collegium Regale by Herbert Howells.

We have two Evensong/Organ Recitals scheduled for this Spring 2019: March 3 and June 2. Please mark your calendars! On Saturday, November 17, the San Francisco Chapter of the American Guild of Organists presented Pennsylvania Organist Richard Spotts in a performance of excerpts from “L’Orgue Mystique,” a fifteen hour work by 20th century French Impressionist Charles Tournemire, culminating ten years of research by Mr. Spotts. On Saturday, September 9 we welcomed members of the Diocese to the Deanery Meeting, beginning with a beautiful worship service. The Choir of Trinity-St. Peter’s continues to grow and offer superb, inspiring music every week. I am so grateful for their excellent musicianship and joyful esprit d’corps. Whether it is a Renaissance motet or a rousing spiritual, I look forward to our music making every week. Our Wednesday night Taize service continues in its 19th year, uplifting and attracting new members to us. I never cease to marvel at the gifted singing of our Cantor, Sandy Kameron, and quietly watch as people express their appreciation every week. I am thankful for all of these blessings of 2018. God Bless us. God Bless Trinity-St. Peter’s. -Robert Gurney Director of Music

TSP 2019 Annual Meeting MICHAEL CHAMBERS: Treasurer For 2018 we ended with a deficit of $9,012.88. This can be found on the budget vs. actuals report under net operating income. If we take out our unrealized investment losses, the deficit was $3,365.71. For most of the year we had a surplus due to a large gift from The Kenneth Family Trust. We are anticipating that once we rent the Trinity+St. Peter’s Parish Hall in the Richmond to a non-profit, that we will have an operating budget surplus. Our account balance at the end of 2018 was $784,004.98. This can be found on the balance sheet under total bank accounts. The San Francisco Trinity Opportunity Center at the end of 2018 had a balance of $8,651.79. We are planning several projects for those funds including a new banner to be installed where the old theater banner was located. If you haven’t pledged for 2019, you can email me at mcham31153@aol.com or call/text me at (415) 385-5962. Pledge cards are also available at the back of the church along with Building Fund pledge cards. Thank you for all of your support to TSP in 2018! Mike Chambers Treasurer
