Every me I see the flurry of ac vity, parents and children coming and going at the Community Center on a Saturday or every me I pass by the Soccer Fields on Jefferson I Ăŵ ƌĞŵŝŶĚĞĚ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ŵĂŶLJ ŚŽƵƌƐ ƐƉĞŶƚ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ƐƚĂŶĚƐ ĐŚĞĞƌŝŶŐ ĂŶĚ ĞŶĐŽƵƌĂŐŝŶŐ͕ ƐŚĂƌŝŶŐ and lamen ng much of life. I have always found one of the joys of paren ng to be the many ac vi es a child gets involved in. (Call me a bit strange) Whether it was sports and prac ces, music and dance, recitals and concerts, scouts and clubs, confirma on ĐůĂƐƐĞƐ ĂŶĚ ĂǁĂƌĚ ĐĞƌĞŵŽŶŝĞƐ ŝƚ Ăůů ƐĞĞŵĞĚ ƚŽ ŚĂǀĞ Įƚ ŝŶƚŽ ŽƵƌ ďƵƐLJ ƐĐŚĞĚƵůĞƐ ĂƐ Ă family. I know at mes it all seemed a bit overwhelming, but I have always appreciated with each ac vity the gathering and community experienced. EŽǁ ƚŚĂƚ ŵLJ ĐŚŝůĚƌĞŶ ĂƌĞ ŐƌŽǁŶ͕ ƐŽŶ ŝŶ ĐŽůůĞŐĞ͕ ĚĂƵŐŚƚĞƌ Ă ũƵŶŝŽƌ Ăƚ DŝĚůĂŶĚ ,ŝŐŚ / ŚĂǀĞ ƚŽ ƐĂLJ / ŵŝƐƐ ƚŚĞ ƌĞůĂͲ onship and ƚŚĞ ƐƵƉƉŽƌƚ ĨŽƌŵĞĚ ĂŵŽŶŐ ƉĂƌĞŶƚƐ ĂŶĚ ŐƌĂŶĚƉĂƌĞŶƚƐ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ƐƚĂŶĚƐ͘ / ĂůͲ ways looked forward to that special me of connec ng with one another to share life’s ũŽLJƐ ĂŶĚ ŚĞĂƌƚĂĐŚĞƐ͘ Such me for me was always sacred. /Ŷ ŵƵĐŚ ƚŚĞ ƐĂŵĞ ǁĂLJ / ŚĂǀĞ ĂůǁĂLJƐ ĨŽƵŶĚ ĨĂŵŝůLJ ƌĞƵŶŝŽŶƐ ǁŝƚŚ ĞdžƚĞŶĚĞĚ ĨĂŵŝůLJ͕ ǁŚĞƚŚĞƌ ĚƵƌŝŶŐ ƚŚĞ ŚŽůŝͲ days or summer vaca ons spent together to be mes of cheering and encouraging, sharing and lamen ng ŵƵĐŚ ŽĨ ůŝĨĞ ǁŝƚŚ ŽŶĞ ĂŶŽƚŚĞƌ͘ And although the planning and the coordina on of schedules is always a bit overwhelming, such me has always been special, a me of connec ng, a sacred me set aside. And what I appreciate most about such me is that it always ends with that benedic on……”we have to do this more o-en.” The unfortunate side of this is that we don’t take the me to “do this more o-en”. Rela onships are formed by the me we spend with one another. Whether with extended family or si1ng in the stands cheering and encouragement, sharing and lamen ng are only possible when we come together. During the six weeks leading up to our Celebra on of Easter, we as the people of God are going to be “Gathering, at the table”. This me tradi onally set aside by the church as the me of Lent will be spent building rela onships. Tradi onally we observe Lent by giving up or denying ourselves something as a way of ĚƌĂǁŝŶŐ ĐůŽƐĞƌ ƚŽ ŽƵƌ >ŽƌĚ͘ This year I would encourage us to add something instead, to add a me of connec on and community, a sacred me of mee ng. We will inten onally “gather at the table” to cheer and to ĞŶĐŽƵƌĂŐĞ͕ ƐŚĂƌĞ ĂŶĚ ůĂŵĞŶƚ ĂďŽƵƚ ŽƵƌ ůŝǀĞƐ͘ Ɛ ƚŚĞ ƉĞŽƉůĞ ŽĨ 'ŽĚ ǁĞ ŐĂƚŚĞƌ ĞĂĐŚ ^ƵŶĚĂLJ ĂƌŽƵŶĚ tŝŶĞ ƚŚĂƚ ŝƐ ƉŽƵƌĞĚ ĂŶĚ ƌĞĂĚ ƚŚĂƚ ŝƐ ďƌŽŬĞŶ͘ tĞ ŐĂƚŚĞƌ ĂƌŽƵŶĚ ƚŚĞ ƚĂďůĞ ƚŚĂƚ ŝƐ ƐĞƚ ďLJ ŽƵƌ >ŽƌĚ ĂŶĚ ŝŶ ŽƵƌ ŐĂƚŚĞƌŝŶŐ and in our ea ng we experience the presence of our Lord. / ŚĂǀĞ ĂůǁĂLJƐ ĨŽƵŶĚ ƚŚĂƚ ŝƚ ŝƐ Ăƚ ŵLJ >ŽƌĚƐ ƚĂďůĞ͕ / am given the me to share my joys and my sorrows and to find my Lords encouragement. This me is sacred me, me in the midst of a busy life set aside to come together and connect once again. tŚĂƚ / ŚĂǀĞ ĨŽƵŶĚ personally is a need “to do this more o-en”. On Wednesday evenings following Ash Wednesday February 22nd, we will have the addi onal opportunity to gather at the table with brothers and sisters in faith to share in a meal, worship and ac vity as a way of cheering and encouraging, sharing and lamen ng. tĞ ǁŝůů ŐĂƚŚĞƌ ĨŽƌ Ă ŵĞĂů Ăƚ ϱ͗ϯϬƉŵ ĂŶĚ ǁŽƌƐŚŝƉ ƚŽŐĞƚŚĞƌ ĂƌŽƵŶĚ ƚŚĞ ƚĂďůĞ Ăƚ ϲ͗ϯϬƉŵ͘ A-er our worship we will par cipate in ac vi es that can be taken home to extend our me together during the week at home. In our me together at the table we will experience the joys of: the invita on, se1ng the table, sharing grace, holy conversa ons and breaking bread together. The Legendary St. Patrick

There are numerous legends surrounding the life of St. Patrick. Here are some of the more familiar ones: It is believed that in 441 A.D., St. Patrick fasted and prayed for 40 days at the summit of Croagh Patrick ("the Reek") in County Mayo. During this time, as blackbirds assaulted him, St. Patrick continued to pray and ring a bell as a proclamation of his faith. In answer to his prayers, an angel appeared to tell him that the Irish people would retain their Christian faith for all time. Today, more than 100,000 pilgrims visit the Reek annually to follow in St. Patrick's footsteps. Traditionally, pilgrims ascend the rocky trail barefoot. It was while atop the mountain that St. Patrick drove all the snakes in Ireland to the sea. Historians generally agree that this myth serves as a metaphor for St. Patrick's good works. Since snakes are a common pagan symbol — and are not found in Ireland — this tale symbolizes St. Patrick's driving paganism out of Ireland. Some believed that St. Patrick explained the concept of the Trinity in Christianity using a shamrock he found growing at his feet. More likely, the three-part leaf was worn by the people of Ireland as a symbol of the cross. It is assumed, however, that St. Patrick knew about the significance of the shamrock in other religious and pagan traditions, and may have incorporated it into his explanations and teachings.

Irish Potato Candy Ingredients ¼ cup softened butter 4 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (16 ounce) packages confectioners' sugar 7 ounces sweetened flaked coconut ( 2 1/2 cups) 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon Directions NOTE: Be sure to use regular cream cheese, not whipped or reduced fat type. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and cream cheese. Add vanilla and confectioners' sugar. Beat until mixture forms a ball. Stir in coconut with a spoon. Roll the mixture between your hands to form small potato-shaped candies or roll into small balls. Place cinnamon in a shallow dish and roll the balls in it. Place the balls on a cookie sheet and chill for about 1 hour or until firm. If you prefer "dirtier potatoes" roll the candy a second time after they have chilled. Alternatively dip in melted chocolate for Easter eggs.

The Shamrock The green shamrock (trefoil or seamair Óg) is the national symbol of Ireland, but this member of the legume family may be white, red, or yellow. The Druids, ancestors of the modern Irish people, believed in the holiness of the trefoil because of a sacred symbol formed by its three leaves. The number three figures prominently in other religions, too. To Christians its leaves form a cross and serve to represent the Trinity. It was thought that followers of St. Patrick wore a shamrock on his feast day. Legend also has it that snakes avoid trefoil, and that it is a remedy for snake and scorpion bites.

Lent 2012: At the Table For many of us, the dinner table has been a place in our lives where we could come together after a full day. It was there the busyness of life was replaced with the simple joy of being together. Where the world outside was hushed, if only for a moment, and our focus became those gathered with us to break bread; friends, relatives, new neighbors. This Lent, whether we are individuals, blended or extended families, we as a church family will be gathering together on Wednesday evenings. Beginning on Feb 29th at 5:30pm, our church family will gather around tables for supper, then worship and fun activities with a purpose. The supper will be served family style with home-style meals, the worship will be simple yet sacred and the activities will be geared towards making things that will be used in our homes as we gather around our own tables. We will gather for supper at 5:30pm, worship at 6:30pm and activity beginning at 7:00pm. Some of the activities will include decorating a pottery bowl for use at home, candle making, bread making and more. Everyone is invited!
