President Stamm Announces Retirement At the Trinity Lutheran College Board of Directors meeting on February 12, Dr. John M. Stamm announced his forthcoming retirement date of June 30, 2009. While the board is saddened at this news they are grateful for his faithful and passionate service. For ten years Dr. Stamm has guided the college through expanding its academic majors, successful completion of a ten year accreditation review, conversion from academic quarters to semesters, and relocation of the college to Everett.

President’s Message: Living In Interesting Times by Dr. John Stamm

It is an understatement to say that “we live in interesting times.” The current economic situation breeds fear and a gnawing sense of scarcity; and, in the face of scarcity, uncertainty. In the face of uncertainty, families and students worry about their financial resources will there be enough to pay the mortgage, cover health care, savings for retirement and, especially, pay for a college education?

Rooted firmly in biblical studies, that rock-solid foundation of Trinity’s mission, we prepare Christ-like leaders who faithfully trust and know their sufficiency is not their own, but of God. Students come to know, as did the apostle Paul, that they are not sufficient of themselves, but their sufficiency is from God, who made them sufficient to be ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the spirit gives life (2 Corinthians 3:4-6). Students, their families and generous constituents who invest their resources in a Trinity education make a bold, value based investment, and resounding affirmation of God’s certain provision and plan of hope for us in Jesus Christ. Trinity’s biblically-centered education is invaluable as we live through and beyond the uncertainty of living in “interesting times.”

There are not enough courageous leaders who personally and professionally manifest wisdom, integrity and humility born of love that puts the welfare of others ahead of expediency and self-interest. A Trinity Lutheran College education prepares the leaders of the future with these sought after traits to meet the

Bringing hope where there is worry, bringing love where there is fear, bringing acceptance and prayer where anxiety and misery prevail. This is what Trinity Lutheran College donors do. May God continue to bless you with abundance.

would play cricket or soccer with them or just sit and laugh. After six weeks I decided to take them out for a nice meal. They never leave the school compound; it is like a big bubble. I gathered them onto a school bus and took them into the city for McDonalds. I was told these boys had never experienced this sort of kindness. We had a blast and laughed the evening away. But on the way back to the school the bus was very quiet. I asked the youngest boy why they were all so quiet. He looked up and said, “Casey Uncle, when you leave will you forget about us like everyone else has? Will you go back to your village and forget?” My heart sank. I responded with, “Of course not.”

A Life Changing Internship in India By Casey Tinnin, ‘09

In the summer of 2008 I had the opportunity to do my internship in Bangalore India, working at the Yuvalok School for slum children. I spent 12 weeks working along side the teachers. I experienced the love that they had for their jobs that lit a fire deep in my heart for these young people, and India. There are 10 boys who live at Yuvalok School. Each of these boys came alone and abandoned, either by family members or their village. However, you wouldn’t notice the heartache they have experienced because of the joy they exude. Everyday after school I 2

challenges and opportunities of living in “interesting times.”

I can gladly say that it has been over six months and I have kept in steady contact with these boys. In December the Trinity students, staff, and faculty put Christmas gift bags together for each of the boys. They were so grateful. This was just one way of showing them that they are not forgotten, and not only by me but by a small little community across the ocean in a “village” called Everett.

Service Learning Transforms By Dave Ellingson

Trinity’s Service and Learning Leadership Team Project (SALLT) led by Professors Dave Ellingson and Mark Jackson began an exciting new research project on the powerful impact of service-learning on teens through a workshop January 28-29 at the ELCA Youth Ministry Network Extravaganza in New Orleans. Partnering with the ELCA’s Youth Ministry and Research and Development Departments, SALLT will train youth leaders from 15-20 congregations across the country. Over the next 5 years the research will measure the impact and outcomes in the areas of compassion, vocation, servanthood, advocacy, leadership, and community. For more information go to www.sallt.org.

Senior Recital Premiers Play Every year, seniors in the Music & Worship department showcase their talents in a culminating event: the senior recital. Trinity's first recital this year was presented by Karin Larsen. Her project focused on composition and peer performance in the form of an original musical, The Rabbi's Wake. Her carefully crafted musical is an exploration of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection from the perspective of his disciples. Trinity students starred in lead roles, singing everything from ballads to gospel swing. The premiere was such a success that there are plans to perform it twice more this Easter season in area churches.

Trinity Launches Folk College by Chuck Nelson

In September 2009, Trinity will launch the Trinity Folk College. Modeled after the folk school tradition of Scandinavia, this one year program utilizes experiential learning, offering a range of regional field learning sites and a Christian perspective on the care and stewardship of the earth. Students will experience the Pacific Northwest while learning from artists, scientists, crafts-persons, educators, and politicians. The Trinity Folk College experience will challenge students to become unique persons with a clearer picture of where to focus their future education. This program is a great option for international students or students wanting to take a year to transition. For more information contact professors the Trinity Admissions Office at admissions@tlc.edu or call 800.843.5659.

Hiking near Holden Village is one of the many activities Folk College students will enjoy.

Social Work Major Continues to Grow

Student Newspaper Turns a “New” Page

Since fall 2008, the Social Work department has been very busy recruiting students, applying for accreditation and establishing connections with the Everett and surrounding communities. The Social Work program has successfully achieved candidacy for accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education, their national accreditation body.

Trinity Lutheran College’s student newspaper, The Logos, entered its third year at the beginning of spring semester. This year’s staff, including new editor Nathan Allen, a junior majoring in Biblical Studies, published a special four page Christmas edition of the Logos, the first four page edition in the newspaper’s history.

Professors Gillian Marshall and Dr. Harvey Stalwick continue meeting and collaborating with social and human service community partners to ensure students have a variety of choices for practicum placements. With these efforts, they are pleased to have the first cohort of 6 students and anticipate a larger group for Fall 2009.

The Logos presents readers with a place to discover accounts of the Trinity experience from a student’s perspective. The newspaper is student run with help from faculty advisor, Dr. David Schulz. The paper provides student writers with an applied learning experience in journalism and layout design.

Members of the Trinity Social Work program attempt to align themselves closely with Christian principles by holding the importance of human relationships in high esteem and pursuing the calling to serve others with dignity and integrity. To learn more about the Trinity Social Work program, visit www.tlc.edu/socialwork. 4

Contributing writers are always welcome to participate in the production of The Logos. If you would like to write an article, place an advertisement, or have an idea for the paper, submissions are welcome. Articles, story ideas, or input should be directed to Nathan Allen, Editor of The Logos, at nateisgreat07@yahoo.com.

CONGREGATIONAL SUPPORT Many congregations believe that Trinity helps them achieve some of their goals in Christian education, and want to assist in sending out more servants of Christ into the world. The churches listed below have made benevolence gifts in the past year, and we praise God for the relationships that are growing among us.
