Annual: Trinity 2016

Swimming Swimming at Trinity has been buoyed by great results in the last few seasons, so expectations within the team were high for 2016. Mr Dion Mepham Head Swimming Coach

Realistically, the main aim of the team was to lock in a top three position at Inters, by continuing the improvement trend from 2014 and 2015. The season began with a record attendance for Term 4 swimming, followed quickly by record numbers at summer holiday training. Many boys took the opportunity to swim in early meets against Wesley College and Mercedes College and the dual training initiative with Mercedes was very well-attended. Despite the effort at training, the season really comes down to the performance at Quads and Inters. At both meets, Trinity College was ‘up and about’, with the team setting many personal bests. In fact, over the two meets, our swimmers set 145 personal best times, including 68 on the Inters night. We may have dropped from second place overall, in 2015 to third in 2016, but I felt that the general performance by the team held true to our vision of consistent improvement and never giving up. Congratulations to Cameron Leach (8.2) and Ethan Bradley (10.4) who both set records at the Quads meet, underlining their position as two of the fastest swimmers in PSA history. The camaraderie and sportsmanship shown by the swimmers, gives tangible evidence that our Men for Others mantra, is alive and well. Many swimmers performed spectacular feats on Inters night. To single swimmers out is unfair, but I acknowledge the following swimmers, who won races on the night—it was a significant achievement: Liam Martin (10.5) Under 16 100 metre freestyle Division 2 Under 16 50 metre breaststroke Division 1 Under 16 50 metre butterfly Division 1 Cameron Leach Under 14 50 metre freestyle Division 1 Under 14 50 metre butterfly Division1 Kane Hughes (10.5) Under 16 50 metre backstroke Division 2 Ethan Bradley Under 17 50 metre butterfly Division 1 Jamie Heslop (10.6) Under 16 50 metre butterfly Division 2 Kane Hughes, Baily Hughes (10.4), Jamie Heslop, Joshua Reaper (10.4) Under 16 medley relay Division 1

A big thank you goes to the parent body for the support of the swimming team all year. Without their help, nobody gets to training, nobody gets fed and nobody cheers us on. Thank you. The leadership group of Damon Marciano (12.8), Lucas Starkie (12.4) and Nicholas Godsell (12.3) achieved amazing results in a difficult year. Their hard work and perseverance will bring results to the team long after they have moved on, but they should feel proud that, with their help, the train kept moving forward. It can be a really hard and mainly thankless job being a coach. Not only do the swimmers need to be pulled kicking and screaming into the training pool, but team selection, running meets and maintaining focus all fall under the job description. Ms Siobhan Wilkins has done a wonderful job this year, not only as the nurturing, motherly coach, but also as the hard-toed head-kicking coach. She has been ably supported by Jarrod Ng (‘15), James Valentine (‘15), Matt Reaper (‘15), Finlay Koenig-Luck (‘13), Daniel Tomasi (‘13) and Mr Paul Lee. On behalf of the team, thank you to all coaches and helpers this year. I look forward to a super-charged 2017 Mr Dion Mepham Head Swimming Coach
