Hockey In 2016 Trinity’s hockey teams continued to improve on previous seasons and some good results were recorded. For the third successive year all teams from Year 7 to the 1st XI trained and played on Perth Hockey Stadium’s artificial surface whenever possible. This year there was a change to the structure of PSA hockey, with the Year 10 competition being disbanded and the Year 10 players joining with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd XI. This helped Trinity to increase depth within the senior squads and the quality of training sessions and games was improved. The 1st XI squad started the season with a four day minitour to Bunbury, accompanied by Coach, Mr Scott Embry, and Manager, Mrs Julia Reid, during the April holidays. The boys trained daily as well as playing three games. Trinity lost the first two games against a strong South West Academy of Sport team, but were victorious in the final game against Bunbury Cathedral Grammar with a score of 4–1. As well as hockey, the boys enjoyed beach recovery sessions and a tour of Lake Cave. The 1st XI consisted of a core group of Year 12 players led by Captain Scott Reid (12.8) and Vice-captain Luke McPherson (12.6) along with Samuel Cocks (12.7), Matthew De Cinque (12.6), Oscar Pecorari (12.4) and Michael ‘Kevin’ Fraser (12.8). Most of these boys had played hockey together since Year 5 along with 2nd XI captain James Hoare (12.6). Liam Buckley (11.1) played goal keeper and was coached by Ms Toni Cronk during the season. The squad also consisted of a number of younger players including Mitchell McGrath (7.4) and Ben Fels (7.6) and Cameron Pell (8.5) and Kieran Theseira (8.2). The younger players did not play many games, but showed a lot of determination at training and will form the base of a good team in a few years’ time. A highlight was Mitchell McGrath scoring a goal against Hale School in game nine of the season. Apart from a poor performance in the first game of the season against Hale, the 1st XI was competitive in every game of the season and defeated Guildford Grammar School twice, to finish in sixth place. A good indication of the improvement in the team was seen in the last game of the season with a very close 1–0 loss to Scotch College who finished in second place. In 2016 the inaugural Trinity vs Mercedes fixture was held at the end of Term 2 which was popular with the students. The 1st XI also played the Hotspurs during the season and participated in the TOBA game against Trinity Old Boys in the July holidays. The 2nd XI was coached by Mr Peter Norman and also showed improvement throughout the season. The highlight was a stunning 4–0 victory over Guildford. Lachlan Rogers (11.6) scored seven of the nine goals for the season and was awarded the Fairest and Best trophy. Jordan Hooper (11.5) was the runner-up Fairest and Best player and James Hoare was rewarded for his outstanding efforts with the Coach’s Award at the hockey dinner.
Mrs Julia Reid 1st XI Manager
Liam O’Neill (‘15) coached the 3rd XI who were managed by Mrs Judy Dawson. Despite numerous injuries, the 3rd XI stayed positive all season. Matthew Pavisich (11.8) was the goal keeper and won the Fairest and Best award in his first season of hockey. Florian Robbins (12.5) won the Most Improved trophy and Travis Levett (12.3) won the Coach’s Award. The Year 9A team was coached by Marcus Di Filippo (‘15) with Mr Bobby Emmanuel managing the side. The 9A had two victories for the year as well as being very competitive and showing great improvement over the season. The team included Louis James (9.4), Victor Le Tessier (9.7) and Jacob John (9.5) who also trained and played some games with the 1st XI. Prize winners for the Year 9A team were goalkeeper Ryan Tan (9.8) – Fairest and Best, Ethan Gosatti (9.1) – Most Improved and Dejan Bouwhuis (9.1) – Coach’s Award. The combined Year 8 and 9B team was coached by Mr Michael Slacksmith and showed great determination. Trophy winners were Matthew Roche (9.2) – Fairest and Best, Michael Ciancotti (9.1) – Most Improved and Aidan Shea (9.2) – Coach’s Award. The Year 8A team was coached by Mrs Tracie Theseira and managed by Mr Anthony Murphy. The team was very competitive with three wins for the season. Cameron Pell was awarded the Fairest and Best trophy, with Kieran Theseira winning the Most Improved award and Jack Wojtowicz (8.3) the Coach’s Award. Cameron Pell was also selected to represent WA in the Under 13s State hockey team. The Year 7As were coached by Mrs Jodie Green and had two wins for the season and showed lots of promise. Ben Fels won the 110% award for this team and was selected in the Under 13s State hockey team. Mitchell McGrath was awarded the Fairest and Best award and also represented WA, winning gold in the Under 12 School Sport team during the season. The award winner for the Most Improved was Callum Lee (7.7) and Oliver Cranny (7.4) won the Coach’s Award. I thank all the coaches, managers and parents who helped with hockey in 2016 at Trinity. Once again, the Friends of Trinity Hockey committee were wonderful with their support of events such as the movie fundraiser, Waterford sausage sizzle and the hockey dinner. Thank you to parents: Mrs Donna McPherson, Mrs Shana Pell, Mr Mark Pownall, Mrs Caroline Rogers and Mrs Anne Clear for all your help on that committee.
