he 2007 rugby season for the 1st and 2nd XV was for the most part disappointing. Coming off a successful tour of Canada and America last December, there were high hopes that both teams would feature prominently this season – unfortunately the results were not as we had hoped.

The 1st XV team did not win a game and while competitive for significant periods of most games, were not able to convert an advantage of either possession or territory into points on the scoreboard. The greatest example of this was the second round fixture against Christ Church when the boys dominated every aspect of the match but were still unable to post a winning score. We were challenged by the absence of two of our key players who missed more than half the season due to injury. However many of the team members were committed and passionate about their rugby, trained hard and played with courage each week but, at a senior level, their efforts were not enough to get the team across the line. On a more positive note, more than half the 1st XV were in Year 11 and will return next year with a far better understanding of what it takes to win games at this level. The Year 10 team had a very good season to finish in second place. The team contained some outstanding players and it is with some expectation that they will move into senior ranks next year. The large squad will help overcome the lack of depth encountered at the senior level this year. The Year 9 team also experienced a long winter, failing to win a game. The squad needs an injection of players
as there were occasions when we were unable to put the requisite number of players on the field. The boys in the team improved markedly over the year and an increase in the depth of the team will see ongoing development next year. The Year 8 boys had an excellent season finishing in the top half of the competition. With the majority of the team never having played the game before this year, it was a real credit to all concerned that the team came together as well as it did. With a large squad the Year 8s fielded two teams – one in the traditional form of the game and another in a seven-a–side competition each week. Best of luck to the Year 12 boys who have now finished their schoolboy rugby careers and move into the club rugby environment. Thank you to the many families who assisted with the billeting of visiting teams and for your help with catering, fundraising and the many other tasks which are undertaken without fuss each season. We are looking forward to the challenges that 2008 will bring and anticipate that Trinity rugby will start on its journey back to the top of the PSA table.
