Hockey Sport

T

rinity College hockey went through a period of change in 2007, with the appointment of the new 1sts coach Graham Reid. He brought with him a wealth of experience and knowledge. There was a feeling amongst the boys that this would be a successful season for us. Ms Leanne Wilson As the season progressed 1st XI Hockey Manager the boys improved vastly and there was never a game where we were not in with a chance to win. Our final position was fourth, but with only two games separating first and sixth that is certainly an improvement on previous years. Without a doubt the highlight of the season was the final game win against Aquinas. The team was ably led by Andre Di Filippo who worked tirelessly in every game. The Year 12s, Tom Zekulich, Sam Metcalf, Matt Burwash and Brenton Bush, kept the backline together, while Dean Savage-Morton played mostly in the forwards. We wish them well next year and we will look to the solid foundation of Year 10s and 11s that have emerged this year. The seconds showed great determination even when outclassed and never gave in. The highlight of the season was not the two hard fought wins but rather a comeback from 4-1 down to Hale with twenty minutes remaining to level. Despite being beaten 5-4 in the last minute of the game the spirit shown was indicative of the men that represented us. The third hockey team had an enjoyable season characterised by humour, generosity of spirit and enthusiasm. The boys supported one another and encouraged best effort, and every member of the team made progress under Mr Roche’s directions. The thirds won their last game against Aquinas: a sweet victory! Victories during the rest of the season were measured in terms of the camaraderie and commitment of the boys to each other and the College. The Year 10s had a mixed season with some success. In many games the scores of the 10A team were extremely tight. To the boys’ credit, they showed continual improvement in both skill and team play throughout the season ending with a win against Aquinas. The 10Bs had one of their most successful seasons in recent years. Many times the Bs had to sacrifice their best player to help with numbers in the As and to the boys’ credit they still played exceptional hockey undermanned.

Year 9 was the most successful year group in Hockey at Trinity in 2007. The 9A’s finished second on the ladder and always displayed courage, determination and a desire to win. The team comprises some very talented Hockey players, but their success was testament to the way they played as a team and the team spirit always evident at their matches. The 9B’s showed great improvement in their skill levels over the season and they were keen and always striving to displace the players in the A’s. The Year 8s began the season with only four players with any previous hockey experience, and a severe shortage of players. They showed a wonderful spirit and improved dramatically as the season progressed. It was a long and very wet season for the 8B Hockey Team. Sadly, for many games we didn’t have eleven players and this made it difficult for us to be really competitive at times. But it did mean everyone on our team always played a full game! We did not win any games for most of the season (although we came close at times) but we managed to finish the season with a win against Aquinas. Congratulations to the Fairest and Best winners for 2007: Seniors Andre Di Fillipo Year 10 Adam Taylor Year 9 Tom Metcalf Year 8 Daniel Carton I would like to thank all the coaches and managers for their efforts this season, also to the parents for their continued support. Hopefully the 2008 season will be a further improvement on 2007. Ms Leanne Wilson 1st XI Hockey Manager
