T
his year Trinity started the volleyball season in Term One with high hopes of victory. Our Middle School squad has swelled to greater numbers and the upper school teams were more experienced than ever before. The prospect of winning the Brother Carrigg Shield seemed well within reach. In the Middle School both teams started out strongly. Under the experienced eye of Ms Janelle Pagoda, the Middle B team managed to achieve equal first in our best result ever for a Year 8 squad. The Middle A team coached by Mr Bobby Emmanuel once again had a battle against arch rivals Aquinas College for the number one spot. Both teams remained undefeated and in a close match we had to be consoled with second place. In fourth term, the Middle School teams once again dominated the other schools. Unfortunately both teams dropped a couple of close matches and finished third overall. Things look very secure for the future generations of volleyball at Trinity College. In the Senior Squad, the Year 10 team were busy making the transition to senior level. With the help and encouragement of old boy Tom Filipeck, the Year 10s managed to improve consistently over the season and many boys were promoted to seconds and first teams in term four. The seconds and thirds squads led by Mr Craig Adams and Ms Rita Basilio made the biggest leap forward into senior volleyball. With the expert tutelage of Mr Brendan Chapman, these squads were targeted in terms of improving fitness, skill and tactical awareness. Making the jump to specialised setting, hitting and passing roles greatly improved the standard of play and also gave more boys the chance to move into the first team.
The First Squad achieved great results over the year. After a disappointing Term One result of finishing in last place, a rejuvenated squad that now boasted state players Connor Smith, Josh Marinoni, and a further two players who made the list, Trinity took to the court in term four in an effort to show the PSA that we had what it takes to win matches. Captain Isaac Dart led by example and proved to be the most consistent player on court. Remaining undefeated until the last game, we faced off against Aquinas, also undefeated in a special Friday night game at Gibney Hall in Trinity College. In the first set Trinity were untouchable, winning comfortably but Aquinas rallied to even the score in a very close second set where Trinity had the set point but failed to convert. The third set was all Aquinas and Trinity were reeling on the back foot. In a final effort to even the set score, all stops were pulled to achieve victory. Unfortunately it was not to be and after two hours of intense play Trinity was defeated on home soil. Special mention must go to Connor Smith, who relished his role as power hitter, Mark McKenna who is regarded as the best passer in the PSA and specialist setter Sam Cadwallader; all made outstanding contributions over the season. Some upcoming events next year will be the Volleyball Camp in Term One, the State Schools Cup in Term Three and Nationals Schools Cup in Term Four. With so much development going on we must offer our thanks to all the coaches, parents and friends that have been involved in the volleyball and supported Trinity College this year. Look out for more volleyball in 2007! Mr Brendan Chapman Coach
