Annual: Trinity 2003

Waterpolo T

here is an age old saying that expresses the patience required for completing a long journey; A thousand mile journey begins with one step. Trinity College has taken that first step of the journey by making sure the college has a facility that will ensure some presence in the pool in Waterpolo and swimming for years to come. The first Waterpolo squad accepted that term one, 2003 was never going to be a scintillating season. The first and second squads trained at Beatty Park in adverse conditions. The pool we trained in was small and constricting, and although the boys endeavoured to train with an intensity and focus, members of the public did not always make this easy. The first school Trinity played in the six game season was an undermanned Guildford Grammar. We won convincingly 10-0. The second game was against Aquinas, the school that eventually won the competition. We were beaten comprehensively. Our lack of fitness was highlighted against a fit and well trained Aquinas team. It was usually through our worst games that the team really advanced and improved their knowledge of the game and rules.

This was a frustrating game as we had a much lower number of exclusions than Aquinas and a greater opportunity to score extra-man goals. It was our unfortunate mistakes that allowed the score line to blow-out to 13-2.

Summer Sport

Our second win, and last, came in round four against Wesley College. It was an arm wrestle of a game with neither side allowing the other to gain a dominant lead. The game was finally won in the dying seconds when Trinity managed to snatch victory from the ‘jaws of defeat’. This was by far the most satisfying game of the season as not only did the team win, they showed character and started to work as a cohesive unit. The last game of the season against Hale School was another satisfying game of Waterpolo. Again the boys showed character, spirit and teamwork to finish the season knowing that they have a good foundation for next season. Well done to all concerned and best wishes for next year as we continue our journey.
