Waterpolo
W
aterpolo became one of the “official” PSA sports this year. Over a number of years, this popular international sport had been played on a trial basis to determine its suitability as one of the sports of the Association. As all of the PSA schools except Trinity had access to a pool with some waterpolo capacity, the introduction of this sport was always going to be difficult for Trinity. However, the subsidence problems associated with the current 25m pool actually provided a “window of opportunity” for the College, as a decision was made by the Board to build a new 50m pool which would include a facility for training and playing waterpolo. Whilst this decision is great news for the future of waterpolo at Trinity, for the 2002 season the various teams had great difficulties training – having to bus to Beatty Park for two sessions a week. For all waterpolo teams – and in particular the senior waterpolo teams – the time at training and the limited facilities available were both serious detriments to the development of basic skills and team play. It is therefore not surprising that despite training enthusiastically, the Senior Water Polo teams struggled to
achieve a victory this season. Nevertheless certain individuals stood out because of their commitment at all games and their hard work during training. In the Senior A team, special mention must be made of Thomas Lee, Peter Trend and Len Whitfield. In the Senior B team, Liam Curran, Josh Johnson and Garret Bray must also be commended. Coach Mike McPhee from the Perth Torpedoes should be congratulated on his efforts to assist the students in refining their skills and also for guiding them through the various matches. The Middle School teams also laboured under the great restrictions of the limited training times and facilities, and the loss of time travelling to and from Beatty Park. Once again, the enthusiasm of the boys and their obvious potential was evident. Hopefully this potential will bear fruit in future years when more adequate training is possible. Thanks are extended to Charlie Liggins for his valuable support. Ms Nicole Love Water Polo Team Manager
