he year 2002 has painted a picture of excellence in the area of art at Trinity College. The Year 12 TEE Art students in particular have shown the way for the future development of artists at the college. Among the creative talent at Trinity College Year 12 TEE Art student Paul Kaminski won third prize for his painting Self Portrait No 1 at the Angelico Student Art Exhibition which was held at the Forrest Centre in Perth. This annual statewide exhibition showcases outstanding artworks produced by students in Catholic schools. Other students with artwork in this exhibition include Year 12 TEE Art student Jarred Wall and Year 11 Art student John Pruiti. Trinity College was also represented in the Year 12 Perspectives Exhibition held at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. James Piper’s untitled work was selected for inclusion in this highly prestigious exhibition which displays excellent artworks produced statewide. A number of Year 12 students also had work included in a highly prestigious printmaking exhibition that is run nationally – The Silk Cut Award for Linocut Prints. Congratulations to Ben Witherick who won a Highly Commended prize for his print Concrete Jungle. Luke Webster and Paul Kaminski also had work included in this exhibition. The 2002 Signum Fidei Year 12 Art Award was once again held on Speech Night. This award is generously sponsored by Trinity old boy Patrick Coward. The award is intended to promote excellence in the artwork of Trinity College Art students and to encourage the winners to continue their art studies at the tertiary level. This year we were privileged to have Mr Ron Gomboc (Sculptor) and Shaun Tan (illustrator) as our guest artists. The winner of this year’s prize was Paul Kaminski for his oil painting Perth No 1 (see pg 120). The Year 12 highly commended prize were won by Robert Lauchlan for his acrylic painting Media Views. The

Year 11 highly commended prize was won by Year 11 art student Ade Haryono Hong for his mixed media painting The City Blues (above left) This year the Art Department is proud to announce the addition of two new art prizes – . The Adelphe King Prize for Drawing and the People’s Choice Art Prize. Mrs Adelphe King (a previous art teacher at the College) has generously offered to provide a drawing prize for Year 10 students with the aim to encourage the development of drawing skills among lower school students and to encourage students to further their art education. This year one of Adelphe’s previous art students, and Trinity old boy Julian Cotterley, was nominated to judge the winner of this award. The winner of the 2002 Adelphe King Prize for Drawing was awarded to Year 10 art student Liam Kennedy. The introduction of our new People’s Choice Award has proven to be successful in involving students and their families, staff and community members in our art exhibition and in promoting the visual arts. Congratulations to Jarrad Wall (Year 12 TEE Art) for winning the People’s Choice Award. His painting Modern Dreamtime was voted as the most favoured art work exhibited at our recent Trinity College Art Exhibition held at the Perth Concert Hall on Speech Night. The Art Department at Trinity College is continuously adjusting and refining it’s programs to cater for a range of student interests and individual learning styles. Initial projects focus on developing the drawing skills of students before tackling more complex styles of working and problem solving. Congratulations to all our prize winners this year and to all art students for their efforts. Next year we look forward to continued enthusiasm and progressive improvement in the technical skills of our art students. Ms Rita Basilio Senior Art Teacher
