TOUGH QUESTIONS

IS TITHING STILL REQUIRED POST-OLD TESTAMENT? By Rev Dr Edwin Perona

How much does God care about our resources? The Bible has much to say about the stewardship of resources. Since the beginning of time, God’s people have been given a mandate as comanagers and developers of His creation (Genesis 1:26-28). Attached to this mandate is a command to honor God with our wealth (Proverbs 3:9; 2 Corinthians 8:1-9; 1 Timothy 6:18). The Bible also gives us numerous warnings about greed and worship of wealth (Joshua 7:20-21; Matthew 6:24; Acts 5:1-11; 1 Timothy 6:10). How does this tie in with the concept of tithing? Is tithing still required for Christians today? To determine whether the Old Testament practice of tithing still applies in our modern context, we start with a look at Old and New Testament narratives.
