The women’s resource centre in Port Coquitlam will be closed to the public for a month and its future is uncertain. Tri-City Transitions, which has operated the resource centre for more than 30 years, is grappling with cuts to gaming funding on top of a gradual erosion of program funding, said executive director Carol Metz Murray, and its management and staff are working to determine the future of programs operating out of the rented bungalow on Mary Hill Road. She said the centre is operating with 75% less funding than it did a decade ago and “We need to have a look to see who we’re serving and what we’re providing.” Prog rams such as Empowering Moms will continue to operate out of the bungalow at 2420 Mary Hill Rd. and other groups will be allowed to use the space. But there will be no public hours, which means the women’s dropin, clothing bank, community kitchen and job search computers will be off-limits to dozens of women who use the services daily. see ‘NOT NOT EASY EASY’,, page A8

Some 2,000 unionized teachers in School District 43 are voting today (Wednesday) on whether to escalate their job action to support a negotiated contract settlement. Voting began Tuesday after the Labour Relations Board agreed to an application by the BC Teachers’ Federation that would per-
mit teachers, considered an essential service, to walk off the job for three days as long as they give two days’ notice. After the initial three-day strike, the board said the teachers could strike one day per week. C o q u i t l a m Te a c h e r s ’ Association president Teresa Grandinetti couldn’t comment on the outcome of the vote — expected Thursday — but she said morale is high and teachers are determined to win a fairly negotiated settlement. Translation help needed for Fingerling Festival Signs to instruct people how to release salmon By Sarah Payne THE TRI-CITY NEWS
If you speak a language other than English, Fingerling Festival needs your
translation help. The Por t Moody Ecological Society (PMES) , which organizes the annual festival in May, will be putting up a banner to provide instructions in various languages about releasing 40,000 salmon fry safely into the creek during the event. “We have so many
new Canadians and they don’t understand,” said David Bennie, vice president of the ecological society and Fingerling Festival organizer. “When they let the fish go, they drop them out of the bucket from waist height.” So far, the group has translated the instructions — “Releasing
Salmon — Gently put the bucket in to the creek and allow the fish to swim out. Do not pour from a height or you might hurt the fish. Thank you.” — into several languages, including Hindi, Chinese, Czech, Swedish, Norwegian and Korean. There’s even a translation for Aussies:
“Crikey, mate! Watch what yer doing there! The little blighters don’t skydive. Just put the bucket in the water and let ’em out gently. Easy does it. Strewth! See ya round like a rissole.” Many of the translations have come from society volunteers — a microcosm of the United Nations, Bennie
joked — as well as work colleagues, family and friends. Bennie said PMES wants people who are fluent in the languages (not using Google Translate) to visit www. noonscreek.org and check that the translations are correct and to fill in any blanks. Any modifications

Work ramps up, accidents down By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS
The Highway 1 corridor in Coquitlam has seen close to a 14% decrease in crashes in the last two years despite widespread construction related to the Port Mann/Highway 1 improvement project. Near weekly lane closures and re-routing have plagued drivers since construction began but ICBC statistics show an improvement in accident numbers for the area. In 2009, 483 crashes occur red between the United Boulevard stretch of the freeway in Coquitlam and 152 Street in Surrey. In 2010, that number dropped to 439 and fell further to 417 in 2011. “Crash numbers have actually declined the last two years,” said Adam Grossman of ICBC. “We don’t have any details on why that may be but we’re obviously pleased to see the downward trend.” Last Friday, the PMH1 project office announced that access to Highway 1 eastbound from Lougheed

Mounties seek help in 2011 Anmore tree cutting Anmore residents are furious after vandals chopped down more than 35 trees on a 20acre parcel of private land on the south end of Chestnut Crescent. Many of the trees were large cedar, hemlock and fir and much of the surrounding undergrowth and ecology
in the area has been severely damaged. The trees were chopped more than a year ago but police are now going to the public in search of tips that could lead to finding the person or people responsible. C o q u i t l a m RC M P Const. Ryan Smith said
the way the trees were sawed indicated it was done by untrained individuals. One of the trees c r a s h e d t h ro u g h a neighbouring fence, he added. “Had someone been standing there at the time they would have been seriously injured

Harding said the government is trying to divide teachers and should be focusing on services to special needs students that were denied when Bills 27 and 28 were passed. T he gover nment has offered to improve class size and composition with a $165-million Learning Improvement Fund but the BCTF says the money is not enough to make a difference for students. Steve Sainas, one of the teachers who organized the protest, said teachers want the public to know that they work hard to support students. Grandinetti said the teachers want mediation to avoid a legislated contract but want
the province to bargain fairly and with serious intent. “I would like the government to sit down and actually talk properly, and what that means in the end is — what bargaining is — is the process of going back and forth,” she said. If teachers’ job action is approved, the soonest teachers could be off the job is Friday — if a majority of teachers vote in favour of job action. Coquitlam is eyeing five more neighbourhoods to have private utilities for centralized heating, domestic hot water and cooling systems. On Monday, councilin-committee heard that city staff are looking at district energy for two sections of Burquitlam — where the Evergreen Line is to run along North and Clarke roads — as well as Austin Heights, Maillardville and the City Centre business core. Already, the city has started its plans with Fortis BC for district energy at civic buildings at the Four Corners campus (Pinetree and Guildford ways) as well as at Partington Creek Village on Burke Mountain. In addition, the Beedie Group is expected to develop its new Fraser Mills waterfront village, off United Boulevard, with a central heating/cooling facility for residents and businesses. District energy, which aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels by recapturing alternative sources such as biomass and ground-source heat, is currently in the works or operating in several

A well-travelled road that passes one of Coquitlam’s most popular parks and a school will be overhauled next year. On Monday, the city’s council-in-committee heard about $2.7 million in improvements planned for King Albert Avenue, between Blue Mountain and Gatensbury streets. Located in the Austin Heights neighbourhood, which itself is about to be revitalized, King Albert runs in front of Blue Mountain Park and Como Lake middle school. Traffic consultant Carlos Perez said the upgrades to the 800 m corridor will finish it to a local standard. The work includes: repaving the existing street; adding curbs and gutters; installing a new pedestrian signal at Blue Mountain and King Albert (which may proceed this year); improving on-street parking; and adding a 3 m wide pathway and street lighting on the north side. As well, as requested by the principal of Como Lake middle, a new crosswalk with curb extensions to narrow the road will be put in to ease traffic and reduce safety concerns in front of the school. comments were echoed by Coun. Mae Reid, a realtor, who noted district energy would be a good selling feature to prospective home buyers. “We are way behind,� Reid said, shaking her head. “I just want to get on with this. I don’t want us to be the last city in the Lower Mainland or B.C. to do this.� District energy is
“nothing new,� Mayor Richard Stewart said, pointing to Riverview Hospital, which has had geothermal since it was built nearly 100 years ago. Under the plan, which council has yet to formally endorse, the city would help to set up private utility companies to install and run the systems in each of the neighbourhoods. When a private partner is selected, there would be a memorandum of understanding plus a yearlong feasibility study before a final agreement is signed. Bill Susak, Coquitlam’s general manager of engineering and public works, who oversaw the North Van district energy program, said staff are not recommending municipal ownership from the start because of capital costs and ongoing financial and operating risks. But the city could take over the utilities in the future, he said. In his report to the committee, Susak said there are now many well-established private energy providers able to take on district energy services. Thieves steal copper wiring in Coquitlam By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS
More than $5,000 worth of copper wire was stolen from street lights along Lougheed Highway late Thursday night or early Friday morning. Police believe the person or people involved were able to open the street lights at the base of the light poles and pull out the wiring. According to Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung, the poles that were hit were located along the westbound side of the highway near United Boulevard and the wires were live at the time they were stolen. “T hey are pretty lucky they didn’t get electrocuted,� Chung said. With the price of metal increasing, thefts of wiring and other metals have become more common in the Tri-Cities. Some municipalities
have started to combat the problem. In Port Coquitlam, scrap metal dealers are required to check the identification of people selling wiring. But Chung said that unless there are province-wide regulations, thieves will go to neighbouring municipalities where there are no regulations to sell their goods. “This seems to be a recurring problem,� he said. “I worked on a case where people broke into a garage and stole pop cans. I am not surprised

that they are stealing copper wire.� Anyone who may have seen something suspicious along Lougheed late Thursday or early Friday morning should call Coquitlam RCMP, Chung said. Port Coquitlam residents looking to weigh in on the city’s budget will get the opportunity at an open house next week. The event, which will take place between 9 a.m. and noon March 10 in the main foyer at the PoCo rec complex, will provide an informal opportunity for residents to learn more about municipal finances. Staff and council will be on hand to answer questions and receive feedback on everything from capital projects planned for 2012 to city services and taxes.
PoMo budget Port Moody residents are invited to meet their mayor and council at an event next week at the Kyle Centre. The meet-and-greet in the Moody Centre neighbourhood will be held on Wednesday, March 7, between 7 and 9 p.m. at Kyle, located behind the Art Centre, at St. Johns and Kyle streets. • TONIGHT : Por t Moody will be holding budget deliberations tonight (Wednesday). The event will take place at the Inlet Theatre at city hall beginning at 7 p.m.
And the open house will not be the only opportunity residents have to comment on the financial plan. The 2012-2016 financial plan has been posted on the city’s website and people are invited to ask questions and provide their thoughts until March 12. Comment forms and emails are also welcome, according to city staff. Hard copies of the plan can be picked up at city hall (2580 Shaughnessy St.) and online versions are available at www.portcoquitlam.ca/budget. Under the current draft budget, the owner
of a typical single-family home in PoCo would see a $70 (3.77%) increase in property tax, a $25 (6.8%) increase in water rates and a $16 (5.7%) increase in sewer rates. Garbage collection rates would remain the same. The city is also considering allocating $494,000 for long-term infrastructure funding, which will be set aside for the eventual replacement of some of the city’s aging roads and public works. The financial plan bylaw is expected to be brought before council on April 9 for first reading, followed by final reading and adoption on April 23.

News of the closure has upset several women who use the drop-in and access legal services, clothing, job search help and even diapers for those with babies. New immigrants, women with low income and those fleeing abusive situations are among those who use the drop-in to get support and referrals, said Chantale-Lyne Gosselin. Gosselin, who visits the drop-in to use the computer to look for jobs, said the women are worried the program will close for good. “It’s really a bad situation,” Gosselin said. She’s working with other women and volunteers to see if something can be done to keep the women’s centre open, including appealing to business women in the community to fundraise for the program. Those interested in helping can email her at lynelyne000@yahoo.com Metz-Murray said she understands clients’ concerns but says a review is necessary to make sure the women’s centre is sustainable and viable. Compounding the problem is the loss of a community co-ordinator, which means there is no staff person to run the drop-in centre, Metz Murray said. Among the issues to be examined is whether the building, owned by the city of Port Coquitlam, is the best place for programs to serve all of the TriCities.
“It’s the responsibility of managing programs in looking at what is the best,” she said. “It’s not eas y to make those kinds of decisions, none of it is,” Metz Murray said, adding that decisions regarding the future of the women’s centre should be known by the end of the month, with any changes introduced by April 1.

t may not be nice to fool Mother Nature but it seems she has no problem fooling with us. After another rather uneventful, mundane winter without much in the way of snow or other meteorological catastrophes to make us cower in our condos and leave TV weather presenters breathless, signs of spring have been slowly emerging. A few crocuses here, some budding blossoms there, the odd robin hopping on the greening grass listening for worms. And while we’ve yet to enjoy an abundance of afternoons with warm sunshine that bring out short sleeves and smiles all around, as the calendar flips to March, we’re hopeful that we’ll soon be able to put out the patio furniture and clean the grime off the barbecue. So what’s with the snow flurries and frosty temperatures of recent forecasts? We may be ready for spring but Mother Nature apparently has other ideas. In fact, that old weather sage The Farmer’s Almanac warned us this would happen. It’s predicting a March that will be a degree colder than average with the s-word in its forecast through the month’s first week. We’ll finally get the other s-word — sun — later in the month. Not that experiencing winter when we should be enjoying the first glow of spring is that unusual in these parts. On April 19, 2008, 2.5 cm of snow fell at Vancouver International Airport, the latest ever on record. But we got off lightly on that day compared to Nanaimo, which was buried by 24 cm of the white stuff. So as we continue to pull on our winter coats, fleecy gloves and warm hats, we must warm to the idea that there’s not much we can do but grin and bear it. The first official day of spring is less than three weeks away. In the meantime, Mother Nature always gets the last laugh. – New Westminster NewsLeader (Black Press)
Taxing times for provincial government BC VIEWS Tom Fletcher VICTORIA efore the budget debate is drowned out by the shouting over the teachers’ dispute, here’s a look at the main points and the arguments unfolding around them. The setting for Finance Minister Kevin Falcon’s first budget is what he dreaded when Premier Christy Clark handed him the job. Recovery is painfully slow, with mining and petroleum growing and forest products struggling to hold and build on gains made in Asia. This and the $3-billion dismantling of the harmonized sales tax moved Falcon to limit overall spending growth to an average of 2% for the next three years. That means little or no increase to all areas except health care, education and social assistance. Despite holding the line on public service pay and not replacing 2,000 positions over

the next three years, Clark and Falcon had to postpone the elimination of the 2.5% small business income tax to get to a balanced budget by 2013. And Falcon has again dangled the prospect of raising general corporate income tax from 10% to 11%, but not until 2014. Business experts applauded the hard line on spending, noting the contrast with Alberta’s big spending and Ontario’s bigspending hangover. NDP finance critic Bruce Ralston says Falcon’s 2% spending target is “unrealistic” and the whole program is motivated mostly by two byelections this year — including one in the Tri-Cities — and a general election next year. He said the proposal to raise general business taxes is a repeat of his effort to save the HST and it won’t happen if the BC Liberals win in 2013. BC Conservative leader John Cummins made the bizarre claim that it’s an NDP-style “tax-and-spend” budget and inaccurately accused Falcon of raising taxes on small business. He also joined the NDP chorus of

outrage over ICBC, BC Hydro and medical premium increases. Some other hot topics in the budget: • Selling assets. The big one here is B.C.’s liquor wholesaling monopoly, run out of warehouses in Kamloops and Vancouver. Falcon insists the private sector does this kind of work more efficiently and union contracts will be protected in a bidding process. The NDP argues that selling off a monopoly puts this government cash cow at risk and points to private retail stores with higher prices and lower wages. The proposed sale of 100 surplus Crown properties has raised cries of “selling the silverware to buy groceries” but land sales are nothing new for governments and Falcon prefers that to raising taxes. • Carbon tax. The last scheduled increase goes ahead in July, adding another penny on a litre of gasoline, followed by a freeze and review of the whole climate program. Ralston says the climate plan is “in tatters,” along with dozens of other policy areas that
are also under review after 11 years of BC Liberal rule. NDP leader Adrian Dix vows to keep the carbon tax and its offsetting personal income tax cuts, direct carbon tax revenues to transit and rural energy-saving retrofits, and hike the general corporate tax rate from 10% to 12% to pay for it. • HST. Asked what he would have done as finance minister, Ralston suggested getting rid of the HST sooner. Dix continues to misrepresent the HST as solely a transfer to big business, ignoring the small and mediumsized businesses that have a year left to take advantage of input tax credits. Simon Fraser University economist Jon Kesselman has estimated that poor people will be worse off when the HST ends while the rest of us will see a very small net benefit. Irvine is keeping it clean
The Editor, As a Port Coquitlam resident, I want to send a sincere “Thank you” to Darlene Proulx, principal, and the staff and students of Irvine elementary school for the fabulous job they have done over the last few weeks with the “litterless lunch” program and the impressive reduction in litter around the school yard. This goes a long way to minimizing the issues with wildlife getting into the school waste bins and it saves families money on disposable items like baggies. Even better, it diverts even more garbage out of our landfills and that saves us all money. Schools like Irvine lead by example and our city too has done a great job at diverting much of our waste to composting and recycling. These are the things that make me proud to be a resident of PoCo. We share one school board and two cities, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, share the RCMP, and all decisions made in each city hall seems to influence matters in the two other cities. I am not sure if it has ever been considered and maybe the mayors and councillors are not the right persons to ask. Emergency crews battle Coq. blaze By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Charges laid in stabbing incident One man is recovering in hospital and another is facing criminal charges after a drunken argument at a Coquitlam house party turned violent early Saturday morning. The incident took place in the 1000-block of Walls Avenue, where a disagreement between several people lead to one man getting stabbed, said Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung. The victim was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and police arrested one suspect. A 24-unit condo building in Maillardville was evacuated Tuesday morning after fire broke out on the third floor and spread to nearby suites. Rescue crews arrived shortly after 9 a.m. to find smoke and flames coming through the roof at 976 Adair St. The occupants of the apartment where the fire started were home at the time and at least one resident of the building was taken to hospital. “It is too early to say what started it,” said Coquitlam Fire
Chief Tony Delmonico. “[Investigators] are interviewing the people that were in the suite and we will probably have a first-hand account of what transpired.” The fire started on the third floor and quickly spread into an attic space. From there, the flames easily moved to surrounding units and Delmonico said between six and eight suites were damaged by flames, smoke and water. “If it is isolated to one suite, you can usually knock it down quite quickly,” Delmonico said. “As soon as it gets into that roof space, it

Nel Forrest passes away Nel Forrest, a Port Coquitlam pioneer and mother of Coun. Mike Forrest, passed away last week at age 95. Forrest was born Nellie Coyle on Dec. 3, 1916, in Okotoks, Alta., but grew up in Calgary before moving to British Columbia in 1941. She first got a job working as a secretary with the Student Christian Movement office in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia before marrying Harvie Forrest on June 26, 1944. The couple lived on the riverfront where they owned a floating house at the end of Pitt River Road near the family’s sawmill. In the history book Port Coquitlam: Where Rails Meet
Rivers, Forrest spoke of the flood of 1948, which forced the family to move the house boat onto the shore. “The river water was swirling right over the tops of the pilings,” she said. “My husband and other workers had a very difficult time to get the cables freed as the shackles were away down under the water, holding down the float of logs on which the house sat, while the river pushed it up. The power of the river was amazing and frightening.” Today, Nel’s sons, Mike and Ray Forrest, operate Forrest Marine Ltd., a marine towing and contracting business currently located on the family homestead. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Council discusses crossbows By Gary McKenna THE TRI-CITY NEWS
Port Coquitlam council hopes hunters get the point. Councillors voted unanimously Monday to introduce amendments to the city’s firearms prohibition bylaw that would outlaw use of crossbows or bows and arrow. Previously, the bylaw restricted the discharge of firearms and spring guns but crossbows and bows and arrows were not included in either category. On Monday, staff recommended council approve the bylaw changes that include arrow weapons in the regulations.
Even with the changes to the regulations, a person is still allowed to fire a weapon in the municipality if they are protecting livestock from attack under the Livestock Act. The bylaw changes will be adopted after council approves fourth and final reading of the amendment. Other PoCo news:
ATM FEES
The cost of operating and licensing an automated teller machine in Port Coquitlam is expected to decrease. On Monday, council voted in favour of a recommendation to drop the annual fee from $500
to $170, bringing the cost in line with those in neighbouring municipalities. Across Metro Vancouver, the average cost of licensing an ATM is approximately $165 and several businesses had asked the city to review its policy. The $170 fee PoCo will now charge was based on an average of the current rates in New Westminster, Coquitlam, Port Moody, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. Council still has to vote on the fourth and final reading before the bylaw passes and a public input opportunity is expected at an upcoming council meeting. gmckenna@tricitynews.com

Given a chance, she took it She moved from DTES to Coq., from addiction to employment

ome people say there are no second chances in life. Holly Green would beg to differ. Not once but three times, the Coquitlam childcare worker has been given a chance to turn her life around. Now a graduate of the Chance to Choose employment prog ram for at-risk youth and e m p l o ye d a t P l a c e M a i l l a r dv i l l e c o m munity centre in Coquitlam, she wants to speak out. The SUCCESS-run Chance to Choose program is scrambling for funding as it does most years and Green wants others to know what it does for at-risk youth like her. “I wish I could do so much for them as much as they did for me,” she says. “I don’t know where I’d be without the program.” And then, emotion coming on her like a sudden rain shower, tears flow. There are funding c h a l l e n g e s, a d m i t s program co-ordinator Evelyn Humphreys, but she says A Chance to Choose will survive one way or another. “Don’t make the story about us,” she urges. The more interesting story, she says, is about Holly.
CHANCE NO. 1
“Green, as in the colour of g rass” is how Holly spells her last name. But there’s not a lot of that in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where she spent 10 years of her young adulthood camping in shelters or behind dumpsters. “We were working our way down,” she says of herself and her boyfriend, who were both addicted to crystal meth and using heroin. There were years of turmoil and instability but in 2009, Green finally admitted to herself that constant drug use wasn’t doing either her or her boyfriend any favours. The lifestyle was wearing her down; she felt sick and in a constant daze. She wanted

Desperate, she put a cl a s s i f i e d a d o n Craigslist under housing, writing: “This is where we are, this is where we want to be.” Being honest was a bold move but one Coquitlam landlord took a chance and reached out. Green and her boyfriend were offered a basement suite to live in and they grabbed it. They still call that basement suite home. It’s where their lives have taken a turn for the better.

Methadone is a synthetic opiate and is used as a substitute for
heroin addicts. Getting into a methadone program was the first thing Green and her boyfriend did to get control of their drug habit. Now they could start planning for their future. But what would that look like and how would they get there? Neither of the two yo u n g p e o p l e h a d graduated from high school and job openings for drug addicts were scarce. Green needed a break and, strangely, it took a Javert-like figure to get her on the right path. Like the prison guard who dogs Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, it was a probation officer from her past who showed up in Coquitlam with an arrest warrant.
But instead of holding her back, the officer pointed Green in the direction of Evelyn Humphreys at A Chance to Choose in Port Moody in the hopes of putting her on the right path. A dozen other youth had signed up for the program to learn job skills such as how to use a computer, how to handle an interview and how to work together on a community project. Humphreys took one look at the young woman with the long, dark hair and promise in her eyes, and accepted the challenge of preparing Green for the job market. “She just had that look about her that ‘I’m ready to make a change.’ She had already taken the steps she needed,” Humphreys recalled. It was more than a second chance it was a lifeline. A Chance to Choose gave Green credits toward her schooling, helped her develop her resume and earn FoodSafe, SuperHost
and First Aid certificates. “They remind you,” Green said of Humphreys and program facilitator Bob Lewis, “that you can move forward in life and flourish.”

D a n i e l l e Paye t t e, program co-ordinator at Place Maillardville community centre, is the kind of employer anyone would want to have. She exudes both warmth and a no-nonsense style of compassion. When she got a call from Coquitlam Volunteer Connections about a volunteer with a difficult past but a promising future who had been passed over by other volunteer agencies, Payette was intrigued. She called Green in for an interview and wasn’t disappointed. “She was full of enthusiasm and positive energy,” Payette said. S h e a s ke d G re e n to volunteer with the
mor ning pre-school program and was impressed with her communications skills, work ethic and crafting know-how. Green became queen of special events at the centre, organizing all the crafts for Easter, Christmas and Halloween. “I know the kids love her junk art and we get a lot of positive feedback from parents,” Payette said about Green, now an employee who has now worked 18 months at the centre.
NEXT STEPS
As she bustles around the community centre, cleaning up after lunch and rearranging chairs in the pre-school room, Green looks confident and very much in command of herself, her job and her life. She is three years clean and is whittling down her methadone dosage. “I’m alert, I’m alive,” she said. And she looks forward to getting up and going to work at Place Maillardville every
day. About half of her work-week is paid, the remainder is volunteer and she has a nanny job that augments her income. Recently, she visited School District 43’s Continuing Education office to plan her schooling and is deciding on a career in Early Childhood Education or child care. Could she have made it this far alone? Not a chance, she says. “I wouldn’t have gotten the skills... I don’t know where I’d be without the [Chance to Choose] program.” It’s a rare person who can admit they need help and then credits others for her success. Green got a lot of chances but none was as great as the chance she took on herself. • A Chance to Choose is considering starting a soup kitchen or coffee shop to employ at-risk young people. ocelyn Pettit was just four years old when her parents took her to see a Natalie McMaster concert, an event that turned out to be a fateful one. The famed Cape Breton fiddler made a lasting impact on the young Squamish girl, who vowed to one day play the fiddle herself. “I was just mesmerized,” Pettit recalled. “I don’t remember saying this, but apparently I said when I was eight I want to play the fiddle — and that’s what happened and I haven’t looked back.” Now 17, Pettit will be opening the 23rd annual Festival du Bois at noon on March 3 at Mackin
Park in Coquitlam. She released her first CD last year and was recently nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards; she’s also working on a new EP project, but it’s performing for a crowd that really gets Pettit fired up. “We love to play at French celebrations and we’ve done several in the Lower Mainland, they’re really fun,” Pettit said. This year’s line-up includes several young artists, including fellow B.C. residents and sibling duo Qristina and Quinn Bachand and Quebec’s Guillaume Arsenault. “We’re trying to give focus to the younger audience… for them to be in a place where they
see things are possible, that music can be really exciting, for them to be mesmerized and happy to see what they see,” said Johanne Dumas, Festival du Bois’ artistic and executive director. Arsenault is already in the Tri-Cities, touring schools for interactive workshops with local students. “He is someone who takes a typewriter and makes music with that,” Dumas said. “He has a system that makes different noises, records that sequence and adds it to guitar sounds to create a melody. And we found the kids are really excited and happy, and saying, ‘What is that program you’re using?’” That kind of joy and curiosity are what Dumas hopes Festival
du Bois brings to audiences of all ages, whether you’re dancing along to Pettit’s Celtic beat or enjoying Les Jammers. “I think people will come to the festival and leave very happy with what they see,” Dumas predicts. “The quality of the performers is as high, if not higher, than what has been in the past.” • Festival du Bois runs March 3 and 4 at Mackin Park in Maillardville. Tickets for daytime general admission are $12 for adults, $5 for children (five to 12 years old) and $8 for seniors and students. A family package for the day is $30 (two adults and two children). Quebecois wood carver hosts workshops Benoi Deschênes remembers the day Terry Fox ran past his home. In Quebec, there was not much publicity about the 1980 Marathon of Hope but Deschênes can recall the Port Coquitlam young man and how he moved on his prosthetic leg. “We was not very well known... but I could tell he was a good guy,”
Deschênes said. “I didn’t take any photos but later, we heard a lot of about him so we paid attention then.” When Fox died the next year from cancer, Deschênes decided to add him to his collection of wood sculptures, carving two portraits of the Canadian hero — one of which was bought by an art gallery in Calgary.
“I like to carve in wood people from my contemporary life,” he said. “Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Elvis Presley and Terry Fox are part of my memories.” Deschênes, who will be teaching his craft tomorrow (Thursday) in a workshop — aptly titled Woodn’t It Be Wonderful — at Coquitlam’s Place des Arts, is being fea-
tured as part of Festival d u B o i s at n e a r by Mackin Park (he will also host free public demonstrations on Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m., and Sunday, from 1 to 3 p.m.). As well, about 30 of Deschênes’ pieces, including paintings and drawings, will be up on the Maillardville arts centre walls in the Atrium Gallery
until March 17 — half of which are new. D e s ch ê n e s s a i d h e doesn’t get the opportunity to exhibit much as most of his time is spent on commissions. Wo rk i n g p r i m a rily with basswood and pine, the Saint-Aubert, Quebec, native who now calls Saint-Jean-Port-Joli home, said he also likes to try out wood from
the places he travels to for lectures and classes; while in B.C., he dabbles with red cedar and white spruce, he said, noting one of his students was former Port Moody mayor David Driscoll. Asked what’s the hardest part of carving, Deschênes replied: “You need to find a good subject, something original. Then, you need to mas-

The associate musical director of the Coquitlam-based Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble (PSWE) thought he would try something a little different for the concert band’s upcoming show on Saturday. Actually, it’s a lot different. In an effort to draw a more diverse crowd, c o n d u c t o r D av i d Branter decided to highlight three pieces with pop and rock influences for the March 3 performance of Rock Me — and throw some surprises in between. The prog ram will
feature Cruel Yet Fair, an Afro-Cuban number by Vancouver trumpet player and composer John Korsrud, the founder the Junonominated Hard Rubber Orchestra. As well, PSWE will tackle Scott McAllister’s Popcopy, an energetic work split into three movements that reference pop culture: More Cowbell (as in the 2000 Saturday Night Live skit featuring actors Christopher Walken and Will Ferrell); One Time At Bandcamp (from the movie American Pie); and Serenity Now (a Seinfield d episode). Riverside Rapids won 25 straight games before losing in the final of last month’s Centennial Centaurs’ Top-10 Shootout tournament. The team they finally lost to was Langley’s Brookswood Bobcats. On Saturday, the Rapids made sure it didn’t happen again. Natalie Carkner drained 16 points, including three treys, and Megan Sherwood recently came back from injury to add another 12 as the Rapids shut down the Bobcats 55-42 in the
final of the Fraser Valley AAA senior girls high school basketball championships hosted by Abbotsford’s W.J. Evergreen: Communication is Key Well, construction on the Evergreen Line has finally started. I know there are a lot of skeptics out there who thought they would never see this happen but it has indeed begun! Beginning next week they are going to be doing some testing on the ground right outside of our offices where the line will be terminating.

transportation infrastructure projects in the past several years like the Canada Line and the Sea to Sky Highway project. The key is to provide timely, accurate information and most people will be fine. As I said, you can’t build
So, for the next four years, there will be lots of construction along the Evergreen route which will undoubtedly cause some traffic problems at some point. Like they say, you can’t make an omelet without breaking some eggs. The Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce has been active on the Evergreen Business Liaison Committee. Representatives from the Transportation Committee, Jimmy Ho, Peggy Hunt and I have attended meetings where the Evergreen Line staff have consulted with local businesses. I must say I have been very impressed by the level of communication and consultation the Evergreen Line staff have put forward to this point. They are honest and open with the information and timelines and make a good effort to keep the businesses that will be affected informed. Right now, the primary contractor has not been named. Until that is done later this year, we won’t know the exact construction timeline or what part of the project will be starting when. We do know that it is scheduled for completion in 2016. I think the folks in the Evergreen project office have learned a lot from some of the major

a project this big without some disruption to traffic and businesses. The Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce will be working with the business community along the line to make sure they are kept informed, have any questions answered and have an understanding as to what to expect during construction and after completion. A large portion of the Tri-Cities will be undergoing a major change in the next four years. The Chamber will be working with businesses to ensure any disruptions will be kept to a minimum and there will be plenty of notice so business owners can prepare as best they can. Call and Deliver! If you’re in business you’re in sales. In my 20+ years of business-to-business lead generation it is clear that gaining interest, creating closure and moving the sales process forward is about personal delivery and the offer. Here are my top five helpful hints on how to perfect personal delivery over the phone:
CALL RELUCTANCE Everyone has it. Professionals know their weaknesses and plow forward regardless. Not sure what yours is? Here’s what I do. I stop everything and start writing freeflow everything on my mind. Once I’ve stated the issues, I then read them. I see how irrational they are, crumple up the paper, throw it in the garbage and get on with the most important task of the day. BELIEVABILITY Next to actually picking up the phone this is the most
important trait a business-person has. It’s all you’ve got when you’re only a voice. If you believe in what you’re selling you’ve knocked down unspoken objections. Decide how your values tie-in with what you’re offering. How are you helping people, society, business? It comes through in tone and demeanour. It’s very appealing when real. It gives energy and resilience to deal with whatever comes your way.
ENVIRONMENT Create a calm, ergonomically correct professional space to conduct sales activities. You’ll be more relaxed, confident and able to deal with whatever comes your way. Clear the desk and your mind. You are only working on one call at a time. Each call is the most important call and nothing else matters. WINNING ATTITUDE Put a mirror on your desk. The person in the mirror is your best friend, biggest fan and wants you to be successful! Professional goals that help you reach your personal goals will motivate and keep energy level steady throughout the day. BE ORGANIZED

It is my very real pleasure to welcome you to the 23rd annual Festival du Bois. There is simply nothing more gratifying than sharing this culture, this diversity, this wonderful music, dance, food and fun with you, your friends and your family.
Since this festival began 23 years ago, the world has changed, and we’ve grown and developed along with the times – but we’ve never lost sight of our roots, the traditions and heritage that makes our community and festival so unique and special. Our goals have always been to honor and celebrate Maillardville’s legacy as well as to embrace an open-hearted worldview that invites adventuresome new ideas and artistic expression. And what marvelous music and dance you’ll discover this year! We’re thrilled to have traditional Quebecois and Franco-Ontarian groups that deliver irresistible joie de vivre, along with some formidable podorythmie with Bon Débarras and Ligue du Bonheur. Juan Sebastian Larobina brings us a hot new musical fusion he calls Latino-Gaspésien. Some of BC’s best will also be performing: Tanga’s Afro-Cuban funk and rhythm, trad music phenoms Qristina & Quinn Bachand, young fiddling star Jocelyn Pettit, dance dynamo Jacky Essombe, Chibi Taiko’s powerful percussion, the highstepping energy of the Maple Sugar Jiggers, Dejah Léger’s HandSewn Lullabies, Vazzy’s lively toe-tapping tunes and festival favourite Sand Northrup.

Place des Arts and Festival du Bois have collaborated to bring talented sculptor and painter Benoi Deschênes to Place des Arts’ Atrium Gallery to exhibit his works. In Saint-Jean-Port-Joli/Maillardville... Village to Village, Deschênes explores the theme of Canadian heritage in wood portraiture and oil painting. The exhibition will include a wide range of work from wood sculptures and murals to oil paintings and pencil and ink drawings. A WORKSHOP WITH BENOI DESCHENES
As part of Festival du Bois, Place des Arts is pleased to offer a focused workshop for sculptors and painters. Join us at Place des Arts for an “atelier” class with Benoi Deschênes, internationally renowned painter and sculptor. Deschênes will demonstrate techniques used to create human forms and portraits, as well as methods to authentically convey perspective and natural elements in artistic representations. This hands-on workshop will give students the opportunity to bring their tools and develop works-in-progress that may be presenting challenges, and/or observe as others work. It is intended for those who carve, sculpt or work in two-dimensional forms. March 1, 2:30 - 6:30pm Place des Arts $20 / person (for supplies & equipment)

Bon Débarras (which means “good riddance” in English) is a trio of young Montréal multiinstrumentalists who play music at full throttle! They bring together tradition and modernity to deliver original roots music that pulses with the infectious beat of podorythmie (foot percussion). Those dancing feet, plus guitars, banjo, accordion, harmonica, washboard and vibrant vocals combine to invoke the feel of the tundra, the deep woods – and take you to the happy place where the spirits of many traditions meets. The band members are Jean-François Dumas, Luzio Altobelli and Dominic Desrochers.
Born as a result of a lucky chance meeting between Louis Racine (storyteller, singer and famous dance caller) and the group Deux Saisons (ambassadors of traditional Franco-Ontarian music), La Ligue du Bonheur (aka “The League of Happiness”) fights apathy and misfortune with tales, songs and dances. This formidable force of good old-fashioned joie de vivre includes Jason Hutt (violin, accordion, podorythmie), Jean-Marc Lalonde (accordion, voice, dulcimer, snare), Simon Mercier (guitar) and Martin Newman (bass) along with Racine. JUAN SEBASTIAN LAROBINA (QUÉBEC) QRISTINA & QUINN BACHAND (BC) Mexican in his heart, Argentinean in his soul and Gaspésien by adoption, Juan Sebastian Larobina’s music brilliantly melds all three traditions to create flamboyant fresh roots music he calls “LatinoGaspésien.” From Latin rhythms to foot percussion, this accomplished musician sails leisurely between cumbia and jigs, reels and salsa, a La Bolduc song to tango and funk. With him: Jean-François Dumas (podorythmie, percussions, harmonica, voice), Rémi Giguère (guitar, melodica, voice), CédricDind Lavoie (bass, contrabass, voice), Guillaume Adan (sax, flute, voice) and Marton Maderspach (percussion, violin). This young brother and sister duo from Victoria have quickly captured the attention of the Celtic music world! Twenty year-old Qristina is an expressive fiddler with a bold and edgy style. Younger brother Quinn is a truly gifted Celtic guitarist. Their music is strongly rooted in the Celtic tradition, with influences from Old-Time, Appalachian, Swing and contemporary folk music. Since 2005, this high-energy and charismatic collective has been packing dance ďŹ&#x201A;oors with a sound that is equal parts Cuban dance hall, Afro-Latin folklĂłrica and old-school New Yoriquen funk. Now considered Vancouverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premier Afro-Latin dance band, Tanga crafts a sonic blend of Latin percussion, sizzling brass and ďŹ ery vocals, seasoned with elements of funk, hip hop and jazz. Called nueva salsa, this sound reďŹ&#x201A;ects band membersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; diverse musical and cultural backgrounds; a sound inspired by bold innovation and creativity, yet rooted in a deep Afro-Latin groove.
A son of Bonaventure in the GaspĂŠ Peninsula, Guillaume Arsenault grew up by the water, listening to the rhythms of traditional Acadian and QuĂŠbĂŠcois music and the rhymes of song-smiths such as Michel Rivard and Richard SĂŠguin. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been performing since his early youth. Arsenaultâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s proliďŹ c songwriting and engaging performances have not only garnered him enthusiastic audiences here and abroad, but also a string of prestigious awards and nominations.
Just in her mid-teens, Jocelyn Pettit has already been recognized as a Celtic ďŹ ddle-playing phenomenon. First inspired by driving Cape Breton ďŹ ddle music, Jocelyn is blazing a new trail for traditionally-inspired Canadian, Scottish, and Irish ďŹ ddle music, mixing it with funky rhythms and lots of groove! Creating original compositions and arrangements of traditional and contemporary tunes for ďŹ ddle, step dance, guitar and song, Jocelyn is making new music to move to, dance to â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and music to celebrate!

Thundering rhythms and youthful energy combine to create a powerful performance experience. Chibi Taiko is the ďŹ rst childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taiko ensemble in Canada. Formed in 1993 with the goal of passing this unique and dynamic percussive performing art on to the next generation of Asian Canadians in Vancouver, Chibiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current membership includes over 20 young people ranging in age from ďŹ ve to their mid-twenties. The group performs both traditional and original taiko pieces composed by group members. They perform around the Lower Mainland as well as nationally and internationally.
