Getting to know...

Q&A

Anna Ottinger Freshman

What instrument do you play?

“Viola. It’s like a cello and a violin had a baby for those who don’t know… I actually was originally going to play cello, but my mom said that it might be tricky getting it on the bus. So I picked the viola because it wasn’t as squeaky as the violin and I liked the name… I was 11 at the time.”

What chair are you in? “Last concert I was second chair in the concert orchestra. It was a little tricky because you are kinda supposed to lean a bit {into the instrument] and if you mess up it might affect the whole group.” What’s your favorite part about orchestra? “The moment we all get together and play as a group. We all take out separate parts and put them into one piece.” Do you enjoy performing? What do you like or not like about it? “I love performing… since I was little I always did creative things and wanted to share it with people. I like to work for something, and to finally perform it and do a good job is [one of] my favorite things. What I don’t like is the nerves I get before performing.” Do you think being involved with orchestra has really impacted your life? How?

“Yeah, I think it has. It has always been a creative outlet and even to this day after a bad day at school, my last class is orchestra and I just relax. When you get in the rhythm it becomes almost like muscle memory and you are thinking so much but not really thinking at all, I guess. I guess that’s relaxing to me.” What do you do besides orchestra? “I do drama and draw quite a lot, but couldn’t take an art class because I had too many classes… I usually have play practice for The Bully Book ‘till 6 or 6:30. It’s really great, the cast is full of fun and great people… I tend to draw a lot of faces, mainly girls I don’t really know why.”

Freshman Anna Ottinger practices her viola. “We practice maybe a few after school rehearsals before concerts, and I try to practice a hour a week maybe more if I have trouble with a piece of music,” she said.
