WHO We aRe
The Tribal Art Society features an online catalogue every month listing quality works of Asian art that have been thoroughly vetted by our select members, who are the in-house experts.
By bringing together a group of trusted dealers specializing in Tribal art, our platform offers a unique collection of works of art that collectors will not find anywhere else online. To ensure the highest standards, gallery membership is by invitation only and determined by a selection committee.

Pieces are published and changed each month. The objects are presented with a full description and corresponding dealer’s contact information. Unlike auction sites or other platforms, we empower collectors to interact directly with the member dealers for enquiries and purchases by clicking on the e-mail adress.
In order to guarantee the quality of pieces available in the catalogues, objects are systematically validated by all our select mebers, who are the inhouse experts. Collectors are therefore encouraged to decide and buy with complete confidence. In addition to this, the Tribal Art Society proposes a seven-day full money back return policy should the buyer not feel totally satisfied with a purchase.
Feel free to ask the price if the artwork is listed with a price on request.

Carved from a single piece of wood, with a chipcarved geometric decoration that covers the surface on both sides of the paddle. The shaft is carved with sun-burst motifs and has a rectangular finial carved with six stylised dancing figures.
The ornamentation on this dance paddle suggests a ceremonial use rather than a functional one. It has been assumed that they were emblems of rank or status. Most are dated between 1820 and 1840 and were probably mainly made on the Island of Raivavae. Paddles small in size, like the one presented here, are generally regarded as being older.

Miniature mask or “passport mask”, It reproduces the features of the mask typical of the region from which it comes. It thus exerts a sort of protection on its holder who takes it with him when traveling. It can also play a sacred role during initiation rites.

According to Fitzhugh et Kaplan (Inua: Spirit World of the Bering Sea Eskimo, 1982 : 156), these shamanic figurines were carved for several purposes: to stand in for people absent from the village during festivals, to avert infertility, or else to focus the attention of animal inua (spirit) during the Doll Festival, which was held to bless hunting and fishing expeditions in the coming year.

Ornaments
Pacific Gulf, Kenai Peninsula, Alaska 19th century
Glass beads, shells, walrus tooth
Height: 23 cm (necklace), 14 cm (earrings)
Provenance:
George Terasaki, New York
Galerie Trotta-Bono, New York
Acquired from the above in 2013 tas exclusive price: 2 500 euros
Earrings and necklaces such as these were worn by women of the Kenai Peninsula in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Eskimo peoples of the Pacific coast (Gulf of Alaska) were, along with the Aleut, among the earliest peoples of the region to participate in the fur trade. Consequently, they were exposed at a relatively early date to trade materials.
These ornaments are made largely of exotic materials: the beads originated in Venice, the dentalium shells in Puget Sound. Only the leather, sinew, and marine ivory hooks are of indigenous origin. The display of such ornaments added to the prestige of the wearer.
These delicate ornaments formerly belonged to George Terasaki (1931-2010), a passionate New York collector and prominent dealer in the ancient arts of North America.

Mupo figure
Bamileke
Grassland, Cameroon
First part of the 20th century
Carved wood
Height: 11 cm
Provenance:
Joaquin Pecci, Brussels
tas exclusive price: 2.400 euros
Mu’po figures were used by the Bamoun and Bamileke peoples (Grassland, Cameroon) for therapeutical and divination purposes. They served various functions: they were part of Ku'n'gan maskerades, played the role of hunting charms, here hung on the warriors' belts to divert the enemy, placed in the fields to protect the crops or used by pregnant women for fertility... According to Pierre Harter (Arts anciens du Cameroun, 1986, p. 269), ""the position of the hands can vary from one statuette to another, each gesture symbolizing a topic. When hands are on the clavicles or shoulders, they ward off evil spells.""

Sexualized male statuette, represented standing, knees slightly bent. Round shoulders give rise to arms bent at right angles. The hands rest on the abdomen. The neck is strong and cylindrical. The eyes are enhanced with two small pearls. The statuette has a beard (damaged) and a hairstyle with two braids (one is missing).
Ritual scarifications with geometric decorations adorn the abdomen.
This statuette has an orifice in the anus; during the consecration, a nganga introduces the spirit of the ancestor, the medicine bilongo, and plugs the hole with a tampon.
