We Read is a partnership between the Casper Star-Tribune, the Natrona County School District and the Natrona County Public Library, supported by local businesses and foundations. Its aim is to promote and support literacy as a community-wide value and reading as an important, multi-age, mentoring activity. The overall goal mirrors NCSD's to increase the students percentage of reading studentsatproficient Reading, and Language. CHAPTER Five: More Noises in the Night STORY SO FAR: Clemmie’s been

banished, the cement truck’s tires have been damaged and Mom has found what could be a page from a Revolutionary War diary.

W

hat we need,” Mom s aid after putt ing t he smudged p age caref u lly away, “ is a nice quiet e vening. How ab out Monop oly? D o es anyone know w here it is? ” “I do.” James b ounded up t he st airs to his ro om; it was his favor ite game. A fe w minutes later, James, Kelly, Mom, and D ad were a ll in t he living ro om, sitting around t he card t able, concentrat ing on t he game, w hi le C or y s at on t he f lo or, concentrat ing on pi ling his a lphab et blo cks into a tower. Sphinx sno oze d comfor t ably on t he s ofa. It was quiet and p e acef u l, wit h t he s ound of cr ickets chir ping outside and a s of t summer bre e ze coming in t hroug h t he window. “

“ This is t he life,” s aid D ad, st retching. “Q uiet, cozy count r y living.” “You wouldn’t have s aid t hat e arlier,” James s aid, passing GO. “ Two hundred dol lars, ple as e.” D ad counted out t he play mone y. “No,” he s aid, “but I have a feeling t hings are going to get b etter f rom now on. May b e f inding t hat old diar y page is a go o d omen. And may b e t he cre w ran over g lass and it to ok a w hile for it to work its way into t he cements tr uck’s tires and f latten t hem. There’s a log ical explanation,” he s aid wit h a yawn, “for e ver yt hing if you on ly lo ok hard enoug h.” “S ee!” C or y s que a le d. “S e e b oks!” The y al l le ane d down. The game was almost over anyway, and James, as usua l, was obviously going to win. C or y had piled ab out ha lf his a lphab et blo cks on top of e ach ot her. “ That’s a lovely tower,

C or y,” Mom s aid. “G o o d b oy.” “Well done, kid.” D ad picked C or y up and s at him on his kne e. “May b e we shou ld wait ti ll you can bui ld us t hat she d.” “It’ ll go smo ot hly now,” Mom s aid, smi ling. “I know it will. C ome on, let’s f inish t his game, have s ome nice hot co coa, and go to b e d.” Much later t hat nig ht, Kelly woke wit h a st ar t. For a moment, she couldn’t tell w hy ; t he hous e was quiet, except for D ad’s gent le snoring. But t hen she he ard a muf f le d t apping nois e: Tapt ap-t ap. Paus e. Tap-t ap-t ap. She got up and switched on t he lig ht. Tap-t ap-t ap. Paus e. Tapt ap-t ap. It s eeme d to b e coming f rom t he wa ll b etwe en her ro om and James’s ne w ly painted one. She put her e ar against t he wall. Tap-t ap-t ap. Paus e. Tapt ap-t ap.

Gr inning, she t app e d on t he wall hers elf, only she did it faster : Tapt apt ap. Paus e. Tapt apt ap. Then she did Tapt apt ap. Pause. Tap. Tap. Tap. Pause. Taptaptap. That was Morse code for the distress signal “SOS,” and she knew James would answer it; they’d both learned Morse in Scouts. James didn’t answer, so she went into his room, ready to say something like “You sure have a short memory!” But James was sound asleep. Kelly heard the sound again: Tap-tap-tap. Pause. Tap-taptap. In Morse, if that were a little faster, it would be SS. But that didn’t make any sense. “Pssst, James!” she said, shaking him. “Wake up!” “Huh?” James turned over and rubbed his eyes. “Listen. Do you hear it? The tapping?” for it had just started again. James sat up. “We’d better get Dad.” “It’s Morse,” Kelly said quickly, before James got to
