Home Grown Talent Goldston’s motor set him apart from teammates Spartans’ middle linebacker set the tone for undefeated season with his defense By Sam Davis Triad Sports Weekly Tiesuan Brown, Mount Tabor’s Junior Varsity football coach, knew there was something special about Chrishon Goldston from the first time he met him. Goldston, a freshman linebacker this past season, helped lead the Spartans to an undefeated season. However, that is not the most impression part of the story. Goldson was tireless and relentless. He didn’t want opponents to score a point against his team. And when he was on the field, Spartans’ opponents didn’t. Mount Tabor’s closest score was 14-0 against Davie County despite the fact that the Spartans had four touchdowns called back due to penalties. “If I had say what the key was to our
season, I would have to say it was the defense,” Brown said. “We gave up less thsan six points per game and all of them came against our second and third team guys. Our guys bought into what we were doing from the beginning and they never let up.” Goldston locked down opponents from tackle to tackle at linebacker. He was one of group of three strong, run-stopping, linebackers for the Spartans. “Goldston was a great run stopper,” Brown said. “He set the tone and with two good defensive end, threegood linebackers and good corners, we were able to shut most teams down. We also played well on special and had a player (Matthew Powell) who had four returns for touchdowns. Twice this season the defense scored more

to a young group and help mold them. It was a decision that Brown said he thought it was key to Mount Tabor’s overall program. “Our JV team had been down the past few years and we knew we had some kids who were special,” Brown said. “They were 4-6 the previous year and I took it as a challenge.” With Goldston leading the way, the Spartans came out the gate with a vengeance and proceded from there to destroy most opponents. “This year the guys came back and lit it up,” Brown said. “They all showed up every day ready to practice. After a game, the kids would call and talk about upcoming opponents. They really wanted to be undefeated. We’ve had undefeated teams here at Mount Tabor, but we’ve never
had undefeated teams that dominated every game.” Goldston set the tone. “He’s a student of the game,” Brown said. “He’s the guy in practice that you don’t have to tell to turn up. He only knows one speed. Probably the biggest thing that we had to work on with him is being humble, He loves the limelight. And he didn’t ever want to come out of the game. It would drive him nuts to be on the sideline when the defense was on the field. During one game I thought he was going quit when Parkland scored. He was over there crying. I told him other kids needed to get in the game because we had it well under control. That’s a luxury that most coahces would love to have. He has passion for the game.”
King and Hamilton emerged as team leaders King led the way for Mount Tabor defense, while Hamilton keyed West’s defense Even before the 2014 football season began, Mount Tabor had big plans for Jaquan King, one of the JV team’s few returning starters. Varsithy Coach Laymarr Marshall had called up most of the starter from the previous season and King found himself surrounded by mostly freshmen. The Spartans found themselves in dire straights when their projected JV quarterback was hurt prior to their first game. That’s when Tiesuan Brown, head JV coach turned to King, a proven multi-purpose player to step up for Mount Tabor.

name for himself on defense for the Titans. He started the season slowly but gained momentum as the season progressed - and so did his Titans teammates. By season’s end, Hamilton had emerged as the Titans’ top defenders. He also was called up to the varsity for the final few games of the season. “He was an outstanding player for us on defense,” said Jared Eure, West JV coach. “He really emerged as a leader for our team and helped guide our secondary. We think he can be a good varsity player in the future. He has a great future ahead of him.”
