Local prep football teams are getting set for conference play By Sam Davis Triad Sports Weekly The pecking order among local high school football teams is starting to fall in place. East Forsyth, by virtue of victories over both West Forsyth and Reagan, appears to be the top local team. However, the Eagles ranked No. 10 in the State 4A poll, and all of the teams from Forsyth County have yet to play a conference game. Several prep teams

from the county will open up conference play this Friday night. Mount Tabor and Reagan square off in a key Central Piedmont 4-A game on Thursday night. The game was moved from Friday because of the threat of torrential rains on Friday. The Spartans-Raider battle is key for both teams. Both bring 3-2 records into the game and are looking to escape with 1-0 conference marks in the rugged CPC 4-A race.

Home Grown Talent Teams in the Northwest 1-A begin their quest for playoff spots. Hapless Atkins, 0-5, travels to East Surry for its conference opener. Winston-Salem Prep, 2-2 by virtue of a forfeit from Raleigh Word of God, plays host to Walkertown. Bishop McGuinness, which improved to 1-4 with a win last week, plays host to North Stokes.

Parkland has its hands full in a battle against West Forsyth. Although the Mustangs are 3-2, they haven’t seen an opponent as strong as the Titans, who have a strong cast of skill players on both sides of the football. The Mustangs, strengthened by transfer Kyndal Dean, are vastly improved but lack the firepower in the offensive and defensive lines to give the Titans much of a battle. Carver, which held the lead throughout the first half before faltering against 3-A Statesvill, again steps up for a major test against Asheville High. The Yellowjackets are as talented in the skill positions as any team in the county, but will need a big effort from their offensive and defensive lines against the ruggedly tough Asheville. North Forsyth, looking for its second win after a 1-4 start, plays at Southwest Guilford in a winnable battle. The Vikings have been slow out of the gate because it lost starting quarterback Anthony Hicks early in the season.

improve to 3-0. This is the first time since 2009, that WSSU has started a season 0-3. For the third consecutive week, the WSSU Rams got on the scoreboard first, as they would covert an 11 play, 77 yard drive into a touchdown as Tyree Massey would score from eight yards out to give WSSU a 7-0 lead. Tuskegee would answer back in the second quarter with two passing touchdowns, one of 24 yards and the other 18 yards to take a 14-7 lead into the locker room at the half. As the third quarter took shape, the Golden Tigers would increase their lead to 14 points, when they were able to find the endzone on a one yard run, going up 21-7 through three quarters. offensive line blocked very well,” he said. “Jeremiah Peebles-McIntyre was outstanding out there. Ramel Gambell did a great job of blocking. Those kids on the line played outstanding. Mark Tabb played well and Brandon Miller did a good job at center. The whole offensive line did a good job.” The victory improved the Ravens’ record to 2-2. “Right now we’re at .500 and we are looking to get above that,” Browne said. “We have a tough game coming up on Saturday but our kids are really looking forward to the challenge. We play against the Indians and our kids are looking for payback. We lost the first time 13-7. They scored a touchdown with 52 seconds. Our kids were very disappointed because they played their hearts out and the Indians scored on a play where one of our kids was obviously blocked in the back. That left a really bitter taste in the kids’ mouths.” Browne said his team has overcome a lot of obstacles to get to where they currently are. One of the biggest is the fact that his roster is the slimmest of any team in the league. His roster currently numbers 19 players. He said that really hurts when they play teams who have been in operation and are well established. The Ravens opened the season with a loss to the Panthers, who are currently top-seeded with a 4-0 record. “I think we have done well,”

www.triadspor tsweekly .com

Browne said. “Even though we are the smallest team in the league our kids train hard. Because our numbers aren’t big the kids get to play a lot of football. The biggest thing that I’m trying to teach them is they have to take the whole game serious. We can’t wait until the second half to play hard. Hopefully this week will make a statement.” Browne said he and his staff, which consists of assistants Antwon Rucker, Bobby Browne, and Al Pinkney try to instill values in their players. “Many of our players come from at-risk communities and some of them bring baggage with them,” Browne said. “But I tell my guys you

can do whatever you want to do or be what you want to be in life. You can be a positive role model no matter where you come from.” As a new organization, the Ravens are trying to break some stereotypes of other organizations who were based out of Paisley Middle School. “I haven’t been with this organization long, but I love where this organization is headed,” Browne said. “We’re not what the Steelers were. We’re in the same place, but we’re not the same people. We have great kids. They are nine and 10-yearolds who are working hard to accomplish major goals in life.”

Ravens Purple Mighty-Mites take 19-0 victory

The Winston-Salem Ravens Purple Mighty Mites and Coaching Staff

By Sam Davis Triad Sports Weekly Coach Johnny Webster wasn’t especially concerned after watching his Ravens Purple Mighty-Mite Team go to halftime tied 0-0 with the Forsyth County Broncos last Saturday. An adjustment or a little tinkering here or there would get the Ravens back on track, he figured. His team proved him correct. Tamarion Gamble. Montrell Austin topped off the scoring for the Ravens with a touchdown run to seal the victory. “We started off a little sluggish due to the fact that we didn’t get full practice in with homecoming festivities and other things going on,” Webster said. “We also had a couple of players injured.” Webster said the team went back to basics at the start of the second half. “For the most part, we came out fighting in the second half,” he said. “I had to get my team adjusted to some things. They played around a little at first – but I told them before the game started ‘these kids are fundamentally sound and we have to take them seriously.” Among the adjustments that the Ravens made was going back with their starting offensive line. They began the game by using several reserves. But after facing a 0-0 deadlock at the half, the starting unit (consisting of center Eli Ancrum, along with Dominique Foreman, Prophet Williams, Joe Martin, Javen Warren and Raymond Black) took the field to start the second half. “We didn’t think it would be a cakewalk, but we didn’t think we had to use all of our big guns to start the game,” Webster added. We adjusted some things at the half and we came out to look a little better. We also had to adjust our corners and it worked because we came away with two interceptions, one by Raeshard Norwood and Antwon Mitchell had the other.” There were several other players who caught Webster’s eye with their performance. They included Kuesean Price, who played well at running back and corner, Michael Jordan, who had a good overall game at tight

end and middle linebacker, and John Coles, who had a couple of key sacks. The victory allowed the Ravens Purple Mighty-Mites to improve their record to 3-1. They have recorded victories over the Indians Burgandy (21-0), the Broncos White (19-0) and the Panthers Silver (33-0). Their only loss came against the Panthers Blue (20-0) in their first game of the season. Webster said his team has improved immensely since then. “They really have gotten better,” he said. “I couldn’t be any more proud of them at this point in the season. Standings came out this morning. We started as the No. 16 seed after the first week and now we’re the No. 4 seed.” The Ravens have a big game this week when they play the Indians’

Gold team at the Indians’ field. “We still have some things to work on,” Webster said. “We need to work on attitudes. I definitely need to work more on special teams. Youth coaches don’t stress the importance of special teams enough. That’s a major part of the game at any level. Special teams are a key.” Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, Webster said he takes his position as coach, role model and mentor to the kids on his team seriously. “I have a great group of kids who are all 9 and 10-years old,” he said. I’ve had them since they were 5 and 6. We have a couple of new kids who need to get used to the system. But overall, I’m please with the direction we are headed in.”

40-0 victory. Head Coach Stephon Wolford said his team played well, although it needs to continue to finetune before playoff time rolls around. The victory allowed the Ravens to improve 3-1, good enough to tie for second place in the division. “We came out and went up early,” Wolford said. “That was the key. We were able to get some kids in during the second half and they did a good job as well.” Wolford pointed to the play of his skilled players and the team’s general exection on offense. Dante Watson, Aki Hannah, Nathaniel Wolford, and Jakari Roberts scored a touchdown each for the Ravens. Dylan Fox scored twice.

Triad Spor ts Weekly

“Our offensive line line blocked better than any other game,” Wolford said. “I also thought our game-panning, was good.” Another factor was the brand, spanking, new uniforms that Wolford pulled out for the game. “I let them wear their uniforms and that got them excited,” Wolford said. “That played a part in the win.” He also pointed in particular to the play of the offensive line. Xavier Wright, Shamon Graham, Jahaun King, and Jahmir Roberts all blocked well and the subs also did a good job as well. Quarterback Nathaniel Wolford passed the ball well too, according to Wolford. “Coach Ham Brown did a good job of calling plays and our quarterback got the ball there,” he said. “We were able to get touch-

down passes to Justin Covington and Dante Watson.” The Ravens’ defense also came through with a sterling performance. “Our defense played well, “ said Wolford, who also seves as the defensive coordintor. Our defemsove line was very aggressive. Our linebackers played well, and the secondary also played well - even though Kernersville didn’t pass much. But the key to the defensive performance was the defensive line. While the head coach normally gets most of the praise after a dominant performance, Wolford stressed the importance of having realiable, dependable, and effective assistants. “I depend on my assistand coaches a lot,” he said. “Everyone has their positions that they specialize in during practice and they all are doing a great job. They all have something that they bring to the table.

“Ham Brown, the offensive coordinator does a good job. We depend on him

With just over four minutes left to play, the Winston-Salem State Rams would inch closer, and within striking distance of tying the game with another field goal from Will Johnson. This time Johnson would connect from 45 yards out to cut the lead to just eight points, at 21-13. The Rams defense would step up to the challenge and would force a punt, but a momentary lapse in judgment from the Rams punt returner, would force a turnover from WSSU on the return and the Golden Tigers would recover the muffed punt at the WSSU one yard line. Tuskegee would score on the next play, ending the Rams hopes of a late rally.
