Rush to judgment by NFL, others We live in a time when people are too quick to over-react to issues that attract national attention. The most recent is the Ray Rice situation. As the father of a daughter and grandfather of four girls, I don't endorse physical abuse by males From the toward females Press Box in any shape or form. My father Sam Davis set a great example. He lived with my mother for 60 years before she passed away, rais-

ing 10 boys and two girls without ever putting his hands on my mother. Subsequently, I have followed that example and have never put my hands on a female. People have been too quick to chime in on the Ray Rice situation, involving his former fiance' whom he has since married. Rice's wife has forgiven him and he is currently receivng counseling. Rice, who owned up to this indescretion, has been forthright in coming clean and stepping up publicly. The NFL hit Rice with a two-game suspension when the incident was first aired. However, a new video has cost Rice his job and

income. The NFL office stated that the latest video had not been previously viewed by them. They made a quick rush to judgment and the Baltimore Ravens threw Rice under the team bus, immediately cutting Rice from their team and voiding his $40 million salary. Should Rice be so severely penalized for this one act of violence, which people around Rice view as not indicative of his character? Could the NFL have come up with a better solution that could

Ray Rice impact victims of domestic violence? They could have taken measure such as making Rice donate a portion of his salary to programs that support victims of violence. Or perhaps he could have endowed a shelter for battered women or those

Home Grown Talent West Forsyth Baseball Team presented their rings “How Sweet It Is”

Members of West Forsyth’s 2014 Baseball Team flash their rings they were presented.

Members of the West Fosryth 2014 Baseball Team gathered last Friday night at the school’s football field to receive their State Championship rings. The Titans, who defeated Richmond County to earn the schoo’s first-ever state baseball championship were honored for their effort.

Wake Forest opens with victory over Bulldogs Freshman Wohford passes for 291 yards in his debut with Demon Deacons From Staff Reports John Wolford and E.J. Scott connected for two touchdowns as Wake Forest defeated Gardner-Webb 23-7 in the Demon Deacons' 2014 home opener at BB&T Field on Saturday night. Wolford had a standout day for the Deacons as he went 30-for-38 for 291 yards passing and two touchdowns. He also rushed 12 times for 29 yards. Scott finished with four catches for 62 yards with the two touchdown catches to lead all receivers. “Coach Dave Clawson said the Deacons did enough to come out victorious. “Yes, it was good to get a win. Going back and watching the film, I thought our defense at times was dominant,” Clawson said. “I thought we overwhelmed them. I was disappointed to not get the shutout, but we learned some lessons even in that last series that I think will help us moving forward.

Right now I'm really happy with the kicking game. We're kicking the ball off well. Our protection on PAT/field goal right now is doing really well. We've been accurate with our kicks. Alex (Kinal) did not have his best day but I think we all know that he's a proven commodity. He's reliable, dependable and he'll be fine. Offensively it was improved, it was efficient. “The two things that bothered me was obviously the production in the red zone - it could have been a 40 or 50 point night if we were just average in the red zone seven trips to the red zone, two touchdowns, two red zone turnovers. In the greater picture, you're not going to win a lot of games turning it over three times, so those are clearly areas we need to get better at. Clawson said this week’s game could prove to be a challenge. “But clearly improvement from Week 1 to Week 2. Like I said after the game, to

a man in the program we know that the competition is going to get tougher, and that is clearly the case this week with Utah State." The win is not only the first of the year for Wake Forest, but also the first of the Dave Clawson era, as he improves to 1-1 at the helm of the Deacon football program. The Demon Deacons gained 387 yards of total offense, while the defense limited Gardner-Webb (0-2) to 131 yards. Wake Forest held the Bulldogs off the scoreboard until the Runnin' Bulldogs scored a touchdown with 16 seconds left in the game. Wolford, a true freshman making his second career start, threw for his first career touchdown five minutes into the third quarter, finding Scott, a graduate transfer, from 10 yards out. The touchdown was also the first of Scott's Wake Forest career as the Deacs moved

Wake from Page 1 ahead 16-0. Mike Weaver remained perfect in the kicking game, connecting on a trio of first-half field goals. He hit from 27 yards in the first quarter, also splitting the uprights on 37-yard and 28-yard attempts in the second quarter. Wolford connected with Scott again on a 14-yard throw-andcatch three minutes into the fourth quarter, increasing the margin to 23-0. Gardner-Webb scored with 16 seconds left in the game as quarterback Tyrell Maxwell rushed for a five-yard touchdown. Senior cornerback Merrill Noel picked off his sixth career pass midway through the first quarter, while junior linebacker Brandon Chubb forced his second fumble in as many weeks. Chubb, sophomore linebacker Marquel Lee, sophomore defensive lineman

Sheldon Lewinson, sophomore safety Thomas Brown and sophomore defensive lineman Josh Banks each had sacks for Wake Forest. Eight different Deacons recorded a catch, with sophomore Jared Crump (6 for 59 yards), freshman Cam Serigne (5 for 62 yards) and senior Matt James (5 for 60 yards) finishing with at least five receptions apiece. Wake Forest controlled the time of possession, keeping the ball for 32:41. Additionally, the defense held the Bulldogs to just 2-for12 on third-downs. Chad Geter, Azziz Higgins and Kenyatta Dunbar had interceptions for the Gardner-Webb defense. All were either dropped by a receiver or tipped. Wake Forest returns to action next Saturday when the Demon Deacons travel to Logan, Utah to take on Utah State. Clawson said

Rams from Page 1 Alfy Hill, and Hill not only sacked the quarterback, but also forced a fumble and Danny Bunn would pounce on the ball in the end zone for another WSSU touchdown, giving the Rams a 210 lead. The stifling WSSU defense would once again make a big play, when on the third play of the next series, WSSU’s Aliquan Bullock would force a fumble and would be recovered by Lakevious Battle. After the 13 play, 53 yard series for WSSU would break down, the Rams would attempt something that they rarely did over the past few years, kick a field goal. Alejandro Suarez would connect on a career long 44 yard attempt to give the Rams a commanding 24-0 lead early in

Press Box from Page 1 who have experience domestic violence. Wouldn't that have a more lasting impact? And, wouldn’t that have done more for the common good? What about having Rice as the spokesman for e against women and speaking to groups in Baltimore about the effects of domestic violence? Rice is now a victim, along with his wife. She expressed her frustration in a tweet. "I woke up this morning

September 11, 2014 the Utah State team will present a challenge. He admires the way the rpgoram has imroved. "If you look at the history of (Utah State's) program, they've really done an amazing job turning it. Probably for most of the 1990s and early 2000s by-andlarge this was not a very good program,” he said. “Then Gary Anderson went in there with a plan, they were 4-8 in that neighborhood for two years, and they had a breakthrough 11-win season and he went to Wisconsin. Matt Wells was part of that building process and he has certainly sustained it and put his own mark on the program. So you have a team that for 13 years did not have a winning season, and now for three consecutive years has been a really good football team. They are picked to be one of the top teams in the Mountain West.” Utah State has a quarterback who is capable of providing big plays.

“ On offense, it starts with their quarterback Chuckie Keeton. He's a dual-threat guy. He's got a live arm, he's extremely athletic. He's one of those quarterbacks where you can have the play defended exactly right and it can still be a 15-yard play because of his athleticism. Slot receiver Jojo Natson can change the game in a play, a dynamic player, punt returner, they run the speed sweeps with him, he's in the slot, he is a matchup problem.” Another problem is the tailback. “Their running back Joe Hall I think is a very good player. He's a pro prospect and very shifty. I think he has really good vision. They've had a 1,000yard back for a number of years and he's probably the guy that they hope gets that number this year. They're good on the O-line. They've graduated a number of players, but they're an older, experienced group. They've built

www.triadspor tsweekly .com their program, they've redshirted people.” While many of the Utah State players are inexperienced, they have been in the program for a long time. “They're inexperienced, but they're not young. For the most part they're playing guys who have been there for two or three years. On defense they are really, really good.” Clawson is personally acquainted with defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. “Their defensive coordinator Todd Orlando does a great job. He's done a great job everywhere he's been. I tried to hire him at Bowling Green two years ago as our linebacker coach and then he got offered the job at Utah State.” Utah State does agood job mixing up its defensive fronts. They are multiple, they're 3-down, they're 4-down, their blitz packages in third down, it's anybody's guess where they're

coming from. (They're) really creative, physical up front. The two linebackers the Vigil brothers are two really good players. Zach, that guy in the middle, that has a great nose for the football and plugs gaps and pursues the ball really well, and then Nick has become a really good edge player for them” Utah State’s secondary is also a strength. “And then their secondary is really good. They have a Tennesseetransfer (Daniel) Gray. They have a true freshman Jalen Davis who really looked good. He had a pick-six last week and another interception. This is a quality football team. This is an older football team - they have 33 juniors and seniors in their two-deep - and this is an excellent football team. We have to go most of the way across the country playing on the road again against another good football team, so this will be another great challenge for us."

the second quarter. But the Braves were not going to go away easy, as LJ Stroman would take the ensuing kickoff, and return it 100 yards for a touchdown to cut the score to 24-7. With 5:45 left in the first half, Rudy Johnson would find an open QB turned tight end, DeShean Townsend for an 8 yard scoring strike to give WSSU a 31-7 advantage heading into the locker room at the half. And a halftime it was. As a severe storm approached Bowman Gray Stadium, the venue had to be evacuated because of lightning, and the normally 20 minute half, would be extended to an hour and 15 minutes before play could be resumed. Although the lightning ceased, a steady rain would invade Bowman Gray for the rest of the evening. The second half was more

of the same for UNCP, as Winston-Salem State’s defense kept the pressure on, and did not allow a score. WSSU would reach the end zone once more, as Maurice Lewis would find the goal line from 10 yards out with 2:17 left in the third quarter to give the Rams the eventually final score of 38-7. Offensively for WSSU, Rudy Johnson led the rushing attack with five carries for 48 yards, while Maurice Lewis rushed 11 times for 46 yards and a score. Tyree Massey carried the ball seven times for 29 yards and a score in his WSSU debut. The Rams rushed for 135 yards on the night. Defensively, Duvontae Covington led the way with six tackles, while James Hickman and Alfy Hill had five tackles each. Hill also finished with a game high 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Michael Bloomfield finished

with four tackles and 1.5 sacks, and Danny Bunn finished with four tackles and a fumble recovery for a score. Aliquan Bullock finished with a forced fumble and Jerron Jamerson intercepted a pass. The WSSU Defense held UNC Pembroke to just 146 yards on the evening, while keeping them out of the end zone, while the Ram offense finished with 428 yards. It was not all glowing however, as WSSU surrendered 291 kickoff return yards including a 100 yards return for a score. Winston-Salem State will watch the film and make adjustments, as they will travel to Powder Springs, GA next week for a rematch of the 2012 NCAA DII National Title Game, as they will face the Valdosta State Blazers at Cantrell Stadium, at McEachern High School for a 4:00 pm kickoff.

feeling like I had a horrible nightmare, feeling like I'm mourning the death of my closest friend. But to have to accept the fact that it's reality is a nightmare in itself. No one knows the pain that the media & unwanted options from the public has caused my family. To make us relive a moment in our lives that we regret every day is a horrible thing. To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass of for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific. THIS IS OUR LIFE! What don't you all get. If your intentions were to hurt us, embarrass us, make us feel alone,

take all happiness away, you've succeeded on so many levels. Just know we will continue to grow & show the world what real love is! Ravensnation we love you!" That was well-said and expressed by Mrs. Rice. To take away his livelihood is not the solution. It deprives his family of income and permanently tarnishes his image. Speaking of image, isn't that what the NFL is concerned about? Women represent a major percentage of viewers and jherseypurchasers. The NFL was more concerned about its image than an individual who helped to make it.

In this day and age nearly everyone is a skeptic or reactionary. People wait for situations like this to exist and then pounce on them like hungry wolves. Yes, it is wrong for Rice to have punched his wife. there is no defense for that. But for people to suggest that he should no longer be able to do his job and even have a job is wrong. In today’s world it is nearly impossible for the private life of an individual to remain private. Everyone has their share of haters as well. Let’s be objective, punish the man, but don’t destroy the man. Take advantage of the positives that can come out of all of this.

Battle from Page 1 fourth quarter, before the Raiders cut into the East Forsyth lead. That loss ended Reagan's three-game winning streak. This season, the Raiders are determined to get revenge against the Eagles and keep their streak alive. It will also help prepare Reagan for its conference season. Willert said East Forsyth can’t afford to take the Raiders lightly.

September 4, 2014

Coach Josh McGee has built the program ito a winner. Reagan has posted winning records in each of its last three seasons. Willert said the Eagles must put together a solid performance in all phases of the game, offensively, defensively and on special teams. “We need to be better in all three phases of the game this week. We allowed a special teams touchdown and a blocked field goal that can't happen this week again.” Willert said the East Forsyth

offense can help its defense by putting together long drives against the Raiders. Thus far the Eagles have been ablte to mix their running game with passing to form a balanced offensive attack. That trend needs to continue. “Our offensive needs to stop having so many penalties and we can't turn the ball over,” he siad. Defensively, the Eagles have to be sound. “On defense we got to do our assignments and tackle a lot better,” Willert said. The tough nonconference schedule should pay off when the Eagles get into conference play. “It is always good to play a tough non-conference schedule to get ready for conference and the play-
