Veteran FCDS golf team in search of another State Championship From Staff Reports Led by medalist Ben Schlottman, the Fury golf team defended its title in the 2014 Palmetto High School Golf Championship last weekend. Schlottman fired a 65 in the opening round and established a new tournament record, breaking the record held by PGA tour star Ricky Fowler. Schlottman, who was also medalist in the 2013 Palmetto, shot a two-day total of 138. His score was six shots better than his closest competitor. Congratulations to Ben. Gray Townsend was also under par in the first round, carding a 71. Townsend finished third overall and is a huge part of the success the team has achieved. Justin Lang fired

a 70 in the qualifying round and was the medalist in that round. Eric Mitchell struggled early in the event but birdied three of his last five holes on his way to a final round 72. His 72 was the low round of the day for the Furies, and his late birdy barrage propelled the team to a two-shot overall victory. Read more about the team's outstanding performance in this article from Golf Week. Coach Dillon and Coach Dennis Ring said they wanted to extend their gratitude to all the parents who attended this event, with . special thanks to Margaret Townsend, Allyson McCall, Heidi Mitchell, and Rob Lang for they have done to assist the coaches and for making this event very special for all 11

He followed in his dad’s footsteps as a member of the WinstonSalem Indians Football Program. Following the example of his father, Patterson has

C.J. Beatty offers advice to ESA students Former Glenn, NCA&T baseball standout says hardwork, dedication are keys By Sam Davis Triad Sports Weekly Members of the Gentleman’s Qourum at Elementary School Academy were given a special treat last Friday when C.J. Beatty, a former standout baseball player at Glenn High and North Carolina A&T stopped by the school. Beatty,. who

C.J. Beatty

was drafter into the professional ranks by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2009, shared encouaging comments with the third, fourth and fifth-graders. A motivational speaker, Beatty told the students that they can be successful by following certain rules. He said often minority students fail because they do not know the rules. However, he encouraged them to be highly motivated and that will lead to success in all walks of life. “You don’t have to be a professional baseball, football or basketball player to be successful,” he said. “You can become anything that you want to become in life. But you should try different

things and see what you like best and what you do best. “I often tell people that you are best at what you do most,” he said. “So whatever you like doing you should put the time into it to become successful.” Several themes were reitterated through out his talk. The most prominent were respect, hardwork and dedication. “You must work hard at whatever it is that you choose to do in life,” he said. “You also must dedicate yourself to it. You also must have proper respect. You must have respect for your parents, your teachers, people in the school and peopele that you

meet. “Having respect will take you a long way.” Beatty gave the students a brief overview of his life. He starterd playing sports at the age of five years old. He came through the Little League Program at South Little League. From there he went to Glenn high where he started on the baseball team for . four years. He earned a scholarrship tio North Carolina A&T, where he was a four-year stater and earned AllRookie Team honors and All-MEAC throughout his career. He was drafted by the Cardinals in his senior season. Beatty paused midway through his speach to ask the stu-

dents if they could guess how many swings he takes each day. Finally, after several responded, he told them he takes at least 500 swings per day. “When I was young my dad told me that if I wanted to be successful playing baseball I needed to take at least 500 swings each day,” Beatty said. “He realized that if I was not determined to reach my goal I would not have a chance at getting there.” In addition to playing baseball as a kid, Beatty also said he tried his hand at football and basketball. He said he realized early that not many African American youth participate in baseball and he that’s

C.J. Beatty another reason he chose that sport. “A lot of my friends who started out with me playing baseball chose to specialize in football, basketball or track,” he said. “Even today many of them tell me that they wish they had stuck with baseball becaise of the great opportunities that I have been able to take advantage of in baseball.“

The Quakes are currently on a five-game winning streak and getting closer to reaching the potential the Dodgers’ organization saw in him when they drafted him out of high school in 2007. Jacobs turned down numerous scholarship offers to bsign a professional baseball contract.

and Jahnae Bowman brought home fourth place. In addition the Phoenix placed three runners in the top six in the 200, three among the top five in the 300 hurdles and two in the dop five in the long jump.
