Sherman dominant in Parkland title Mustang junior named MVP in 4-A track By Sam Davis Triad Sports Weekly

Kaitlin Sherman criuises to victory in the 100 meter dash.

Coach Antwan Hughes knew this year’s Parkland girls track team could be a special group. The Mustangs proved Hughes to be prophetic. Parkland won both the State 4-A indoor and outdoor championships. Kaitlin Sherman keyed the state’s top team of sprinters. But it took a little persuasion by Hughes to get her there.

“I had been on her dad to let her come out for indoor track the last two years,” Hughes said. “It’s hard for someone in 4-A track to come out in March and April and compete against runners who have been training all year. She had been playing volleyball in fall and basketball in the winter I knew she could be outstanding if she gave fulltime to track. Her dad finally allowed her come out early this year. She came out in

November and that allowed her to go to another level. She was dominant during indoor season and she really exploded during the outdoor season.” Sherman recently captured the 100 and 200 at the State 4-A championship. She also anchored legs on both the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relay teams. She was named the meet’s Most Valuable Performer and Parkland won the title in runaway fashion.

Bret Saunders waves to the crowd as the West Forsyth Baseball Team celebrates its first-ever State 4-A title. Coach Brad Bullard of West Forsyth, which saw his team advance to its first visit to the title game in 12 years, burst into a wild postgame joined in the celebration on the field following

Richmond’s final out. Bullard, who played on the West team which advanced to the finals in 2002, said his team showed much resiliency after dropping the second game of the series to the

Raiders earlier in the day. “The guys really turned the page fast after the game two loss,” he said. “We stayed positive after that game and focused on what we needed to do in game three to

win. The guys came out and were ready to go from the start. It's a great feeling to be bringing back the first men's state championship to West Forsyth.”

Dash’s Tim Anderson named to All-Star Team From Staff Reports Tim Anderson has been selected to the Carolina League AllStar team, the league announced Tuesday. The 20-year-old replaces Myrtle Beach third baseman Joey Gallo in the California-Carolina League All-Star Game, which will take place next Tuesday, June 17, at 7:05 p.m. in Wilmington, Del. This season, the Tuscaloosa, Ala., native is hitting .306 with four

If you ask Coach Welch about the 2014 team, he would tell you this team is special because of their chemistry and they were no doubt the best practice team he has had at RJR. tice." Amazingly, many of the players on the Demons’ varsity roster have played together most of their lives. Most played at the Winston-Salem Nationals Little League. Welch coached them from the start of their careers. Most were also named to the league’s All-Star teams and gained valuable experience during their play against outside teams in District 2, regional and state competitions. Welch’s son Logan, who has accepted a scholarship offer to play at

Univ. of North Carolina, has been a leader throughout his young career. A junior, he appears to have all the tools to play on the collegiate level as do several others on the team. With his return next season, the Demons will be one of the conference favorites and RJR could very well advance past their quarterfinal finish in State 4-A competition. With the way Welch has brought the program along is a testament to the patience and work ethic he instilled in the players, beginning at an early age.

It also speaks volumes about the confidence that the players’ parents have in him. In a time when those who are entrusted with children come woefully short of living up to the standard in that regard, Welch has gone over and beyond the call of duty to develop the individual and collective talent of the group. He should be applauded for putting the time in to get his program to this point. Far too often coaches never get out in the community and involve themselves in activities that will help devel-

Kaitlin Sherman (left) brought home four gold medals from the State 4-A Track Championships, leading the Parkland girls to the title.

Mustangs from Page 1 While Hughes said Sherman’s efforts stood out, there were several other key performers on the team. In addition to that, the Mustangs have an outstanding coaching staff. “These girls worked hard all year,” Hughes said. They did a good jo during

indoor season when we took a close win in the state championship. They continued to work hard during the outdoor season and we were able to get more people on the team.” The Mustangs had eight to qualify for the state meet. However, each played a key role as they dominated the sprints, relays, hurdles and long jump. “That was the key,”

Hughes said. “It’s hard to win with eight or nine. But we had people going to different events and they all did well in every event.” The diversity in talent on the staff helped the Mustangs as well. Tyrone Holman coaches the hurdles and helps out with the jumps. Kamary Cladd assists in that area also. Jerrelle Elliott, former standout at Parkland and

North Carolina A&T coaches the 400 and middle distance runners and Robert Neil a volunteer, also helps out with the jumps. The team’s future looks bright. Only two seniors qualified for the state meet, long jumper Ila Mumford and sprinter Myshale Spigner. With a solid group of juniors returning for the senior year the Mustangs should again put the state’s best

girls team on the track. Sherman and Williams are also receiving much recruiting attention. Both have heard from most of the ACC schools. In addition, the Mustangs have several promising freshmen on their squad. That trio, which consists of Shanone Cannon, Kimani Davis and Djianiya France will keep the Mustangs’ program for many years to come.

Titans from Page 1 For his outstanding play throughout the series, Vanderstok, who recorded a single, double and triple in the deciding game, was selected as the series MVP. He also played a major role in the Titans’ win in Game 1, a 6-4 West victory on Friday night, In that game, Vanderstok had three hits and drove home a run to lead West. West made a run in Game 2

after trailing 6-0, and it appeared the Titans might sweep the series. Aaron Stamper went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to ignite the Titans offense. Alex Saphar and Vanderstok drove in two runs apiece. T.J. Goco came on in relief and gave West Forsyth 2 1/3 innings of great relief pitching. Vanderstok then took to the mound and pitched three solid innings for the Titans. “We fought back hard this game from being down 6-0 to take the lead 7-6,” Bullard said. “But he gave up a home run to tie it and then gave

up a couple hits to lose this game.” For their part, Richmond came through with some clutch plays to force game three. The Raiders got a solo home run by Ethan Baucom that tied the game in the seventh and added a walk-off single by Cody Leviner to take an 8-7 victory. That set up the Titans clutch performance in the third game. West Forsyth got off to a fast start behind the hitting of Shelton and Vendertok to set the tone early. Shelton slammed a homer in the sec-

ond inning of the third to lift the Titans an insurmountable 4-0 lead. West increased its lead to 6-0 in the fourth inning. However, Richmond didn’t concede, scoring three runs in the fifth, paced by a two-run single by James Buie. However, the Titans got key pitching performances by Jake Mayhew, who was the winning pitcher – throwing 5 2/3 innings, and Travis Holden came on in the sixth inning to get the save. Jarrett Corder helped out at the plate, with two hits for the Titans.
