FOOD EXPO NYC

The objective of “relief” is to recreate that momentary sensation of distraction that is found from consuming hiyashi somen. A brief transitional removal of ones mind from the outside world. Using this temporary removal as an opportunity to inform the user of the selected dish Hiyashi Somen and it’s connection with tanabata.

hikoboshi (altair)

orihime (vega) Tanabata literally means “evening of the seventh, and is celebrated every year on the seventh day of the seventh month. This is either July 7th, or August 7th, depending on whether the region celebrates the holiday according to the Gregorian calendar, or the lunar calendar. This date just happens to coincide with the date of the food expo. Tanabata is also known as the Star Festival, because it is a celebration of the reuniting of the lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi (or the stars Vega and Altair), separated by the vast expanse of the Milky Way, for one night a year when Orihime is allowed to cross to be with Hikoboshi.

During the daytime the path reacts to its exterior environment projecting shadows and movement through the skins perforations. The floor is lined with led technology replicating the sensation of flowing water. At each entry point is information pertaining to the dish, holiday, and folklore that connect the two allowing for the tranisiton throughout the space to become interpretive and experiental for each individual.

MEMBER RECOGNITION: Events, experience, and environments will be printed with the German translation so visitors have a clear grasp of the key functions your members can assist in when approached for design work. Every member will be recognized in this graphic form that would be printed on the interior structure. The concept is that each individual name would be part of a pattern that from a distance read as a whole. However upon closer examination, visitors would see that it is a component of parts much like your organization that creates this form.

INTERACTIVE INFORMATION WALL: VISITOR PARTICIPATION The Interactive Info Graphics would project on the wall surface using kinect technology allowing for visitor participation. The graphic would serve as a geographical service locator as well a member directory. The screen would cue with the EDPA logo that appears to be a printed image. When touched the graphic would transition a white screen and then zoom in on a global view of active participants. From here, Guests could touch countries, States, and even specific names of company employees before being directed to the member profiles.

Information Graphics:

The map is created from a single slab of travertine. A material that’s is clearly identifiable throughout all of the buildings that make up Lincoln Center. The idea of this is to create a material relationship that is visible identifiable allowing the user to connect with the site. Surrounding architecture and street information are jet cut to create a minimal relief from the single slab while Lincoln Center components are formed from translucent white glass. Each component illuminates allowing form pairing or information video and graphics.

The video is used as a way of captivating the visitor’s attention and to develop an immediate connection to site and activity. The visual transition from illumination to video is intended to gradually grasp the attention of the user while preparing them for the introduction of the information panel.

Preceding the video is the information display, which allows the user to obtain the information pertaining to the illuminated building. The information display screen is transitional panel, which first informs the user of the illuminated building and its function. The panel then informs the visitor of the current activities taking place at this specified (illuminated) location. Time, dates and additional information will be provided on these screens allowing for clear communication from device to user.

What Is a Native Plant?

Native plants are those that grow in a particular region without direct or indirect human intervention. In the American Northea this generally means the plants that were here before 1500. Native plants provide food and shelter for local migratory birds benificial insects and many other animals. These plants evolve with local wildlife over thousand of years to become the incred compex organisms they are today. Growing and observing the connects us to our natural heritage in a special way.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden has been studying native plants since the Native Flora Garden was established in 1911. Today, BBG scientists conduct extensive work in the field and in the lab. They collect speciments for preservation and propagation track shifts in local plant populations, evaluate the health of local ecosystems, and study the evolutionary relationship between plants.

Don’t carve the trees

Did you know that carving into my bark leaves me exposed. My bark is like your skin that helps protect me from the outside world. Carving into me leaves my shell open to bugs and bacteria that can make me sick and stun my growth.

Kettle ponds are geographical features that are formed as a result of the last major advance of the ice age about 25,000 to 20,000 years ago when thick ice sheets covered much of the metropolitan area.

the other trees will love you for it!

Does it matter if we litter?

It does matter and we should care. Litter is both an environmental and a social issue. If residents join in in cleaning up their environment and then keep it clean, we win because we have a cleaner, safer and more hygienic city or town.

How are they formed?

As the ice slowely melted, about 10,000 years ago, large blocks of ice broke off the retreating glacier. Streams flowing from the glacier deposited sediments ranging from fine sand to coarse gravel around these blocks.

discovery challenge! can you spot my frog friend?

Who calls them home?

As these blocks melted, they left behind deep depressions that eventually filled with water from underground. Now they support the vast ecological array of inhabitants that call the garden home.
