Executive Summary

New College Leicester is breaking new ground through the innovative partnerships it has developed which places the college at the heart of the community it serves. The colleges’ current facilities are of the highest quality and are home to well established, and well supported community focused clubs. The college wishes to expand this by working with partners who have the same ethos and principles; to develop a sporting hub which will be the heartbeat for sports development in the city and beyond.

New College Leicester values physical education and school sport and believes in the power of sport in relation to whole school improvement. In advance of the cross departmental launch of the School Sport and Activity Action Plan, the college has delivered such outcomes since 2010. The college fully endorses the Leicester City School Sport Partnership and the School Games alongside the broader aspect of the role that the School Sports Partnerships (SSP) delivers within the City.

A facilities development programme has seen the refurbishment of the college’s built environment focussing upon improving the community facilities. The college’s on-going investments have been matched with over £1 million of external funding. This has been used to build a 1km closed road cycle circuit and to support the refurbishment of the college’s 8 tennis and 4 netball courts. Over the next 5 years, the college wishes to continue to embed and develop its facilities to provide yet more opportunities for its students and the local community.

New College Leicester currently has strong community links, in particular with its partner sports clubs. These links are formalised through bespoke partnership agreements and licences which build a sustainable business model, while at the same time strengthen community participation. This has the potential to be developed further upon a substantial college site. This strategy seeks to accommodate all key partners in creating a single management structure and viable business plan, setting the standards for other schools to follow.

Through this strategy the college endeavours to ensure that everyone regardless of age, background or ability feels able to access and engage in sport and physical activity.

A strategy for an active nation.
