Trent Hills is a vibrant and growing community with a population of 13,000 that is located on the Trent Severn Waterway amongst the rolling hills of Northumberland County.
The Water Distribution/Treatment Plant Operator II is required to perform a variety of mechanical operations, carry out capital and operational repairs, inspections, metering and replacement activities in the Class III Water Treatment Plants, lift/pumping stations, Class I Warkworth Wastewater Treatment System and Collection Pumping Stations, auxiliary power and computer systems. The Operator II also assists with all functions and ongoing maintenance of the Class I and II Water Distribution Systems including repairs and replacements of watermains and appurtenances, fire hydrants and service materials.
Reporting to the Director of Legislative Services/Clerk, the successful applicant will be responsible for providing support with the performance of the statutory duties of the Clerk, as set out in the Municipal Act and other related legislation. The Manager of Legislative Services/Deputy Clerk is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of the Clerk’s Department and carrying out responsibilities in the following functional areas; records management, Council, Committee and Board services, by-law coordination, communications, accessibility, cemeteries, livestock claims, elections, access to information, licensing and vital statistics. The Manager of Legislative Services/Deputy Clerk shall also provide leadership to direct reports. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a university degree or college diploma in business or public administration and/ or a minimum of five years experience in a senior position in municipal administration. As well, the candidate will preferably be a graduate of the Municipal Administration program. The candidate requires experience in managing staff, communications and superior computer software knowledge (Microsoft Office, iCompass and municipal software). Knowledge of related acts and legislation such as the Municipal Act 2001, Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Elections Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, Ontario Heritage Act, Drainage Act, Planning Act, Vital Statistics Act and other relevant legislation is needed, as well as demonstrated judgment and ability to critically assess options within the context of application legislation to guide decisions. Tweed – Despite the rain, Canada Day in Tweed was a bustle. Folks were dressed in red attire for the parade and day - long activities that did not stop until the evening fireworks ended. The morning began with a pancake breakfast in the fairgrounds’ Tweed Agricultural Building White Building. Rain and flooding at the Tweed Memorial Park moved the afternoon family events into the Tweed arena. The children enjoyed three bouncy castles, face painting, crafts and the free Canada cake and hotdogs. There was music, birdhouse making and painting of a school bus signs. “A wonderful afternoon for kids and their parents,” said Tweed Mayor JoAnne Albert. “The biggest Canada cake I have ever seen (was created) by Charlene Green,” added Albert. Music was everywhere. Hastings: the Muscial cast entertained on a float in the parade. Gary Cassibo played in the arena. Cowboys Don’t Cry had everyone moving in the Tweed Legion parking. Scott Pettigrew, showcased Canadian songwriters at the Tweedsmuir Tavern. “It was a rotating crowd” that joined in on “two robust versions of O’Canada,” he said. Tweedsmuir owner, Peter Spratt, sang Cover of the Rolling Stone. Open-mic musicians played Canadian songs. Early evening, when the rains came, the Charlie Bird Band quickly moved into White Building. A crowd of 70 stayed on to enjoy the free family dance. At the same time, Hastings: the Musical, presented their fourth performance at
Madoc — “It’s a great honour and a great surprise,” said Cornelius “Curt” Brinkman who was chosen by council as Senior of the Year in Centre Hastings.Surrounded by his wife Beverly and family he was presented with a certificate to mark the occasion at a regular council meeting. Unbeknownst to Brinkman, he was there because of the presentation of the annual report of the Central Hastings Support Network (CHSN) by Sally Gale, executive director. Brinkman is currently chair of the CHSN board and had no idea that he was going to receive the award. He volunteers for many organizations and drives for Meals on Wheels, is past president of the Moira Lake Property Owner Association, zone representative, and is still an active member. He is very involved with
his church the Wesleyan Free Methodist holding the position of chair of the leadership team. In his spare time he does water sampling for the ministry of natural resources and climate change. Mayor Tom Deline praised Brinkman for his volunteer work. “In all sincerity the number of years I’ve seen this man, talked to him and his wife and known his involvement in this community, any community would be proud to have him. His heart and his soul are there. I am sure his family feels the same way whether it’s his work with his church or community.” Coun. Eric Sandford said, “I’d like to mirror what Tom has said, it’s people like you who volunteer in our community that make us successful. This award is for all you’ve done and continue to do.” Brinkman replied, “I’m humbled.”

Hastings – Hastings certainly knows how to throw a party and their Canada 150 celebration was a massive success. With Front Street West transformed into a pedestrian mall with vendors offering their wares and threatening weather largely nudged away by clear skies and warm weather.You couldn’t have asked for a better setting for a July 1 party.It all kicked off with the annual fire station open house then shifted downtown with the unveiling of the poppy red and white Hastings street piano in the heart of downtown. The festivities moved to the waterfront and the Hastings Lions Murray Fenton Gazebo where entertainers like Ken Tizzard & The Variety Show Players, the Firelights Belly Dancers, Blades of Glory, Wicklow and the Hastings Hoola Hoopers performed.Further along the waterfront there were children’s games and activities and a colourful mid-afternoon parade that drew even more people to Front Street.Throughout the day
Trent Hills -- It was three times the fun celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary in Trent Hills as festivities were held in its three main urban centres. In Campbellford Westben Arts Festival Theatre choruses led people in the singing of O Canada and followed that with the Canada 150 and Canada Dreams theme songs, the latter based on sentiments about the country’s future as expressed by area students and residents, and written for a special concert held July 2 at The Barn. Cupcakes made specially for the occasion by Dooher’s Bakery were handed out afterwards. Trent Hills Mayor Hector Macmillan brought greetings from the municipality and announced a C130 coming back from Parliament Hill en route to Trenton would be doing a low level flyby over Hastings later in the day.

In a nice effort to balance celebrations across the township, festivities were organized in both communities in a way that didn’t overlap and gave visitors a chance to enjoy themselves at double the pleasure. There was a large and colourful parade in Havelock with opening ceremonies and bouncy castle fun to kicks things off with the action running until 3 p.m. when the Canada 150 excitement shifted to the hamlet with a heart of gold where there was more live entertainment, children’s activities and a barbecue with fireworks on tap after dark. On July 2 the Havelock Legion presented singer Dean James until mid-afternoon. In the evening there was entertainment near the caboose on the southside of Highway 7 including a performance by award-winning bluesman Al Lerman. The Village of Havelock, celebrating its own

Covering Charles and Camilla was a royal whirlwind
Venezuela: Hand grenades from a helicopter After almost three months of daily antigovernment demonstrations, what Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro needed most was an excuse to impose martial law, or at least to use major violence and mass arrests close the protests Gwynne Dyer to down. On Tuesday, Maduro got his excuse. A stolen police helicopter flew over the Supreme Court building in Caracas – and dropped a couple of hand grenades near it. As “terrorist” incidents go, it was so incompetent and downright silly that you begin to suspect that it wasn’t a “false flag” operation sponsored by the government after all. If Maduro’s people were aiming to give themselves an excuse for a crack-down, surely they would have come up with something more impressive than a guy in a helicopter dropping a couple of hand-grenades at random onto the Supreme Court lawn. The man behind this attack was Oscar Perez, a police officer who announced in a video posted on Instagram that he was launching an armed struggle against tyranny. “We are a coalition of military employees, policemen and civilians who are looking for balance and are against this criminal government,” Pérez said, and the four armed men standing behind him in the video tried to look fierce. The ski-masks helped a bit, but it was hard not to giggle. They really didn’t look very dangerous. But you have to work with the material at hand, and President Maduro did his best to inflate the incident into a major terrorist attack. “I have activated the entire armed forces to defend the peace,” he said. “Sooner or later, we are going to capture that helicopter and those who carried out this terror attack.” (And while we’re at it, we’ll round up a lot of other people who support the opposition.) Maduro can no longer stay in power by democratic means. There is no doubt that he won the presidency by a narrow but genuine majority (1.5 percent) in the 2013 election that followed the death of Hugo Chavez, the herofounder of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela. But there is also no doubt that the opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Roundtable, won a landslide victory in the parliamentary election of 2015. What made the difference between those

two elections was the price of oil. In 2013 it was around $100 per barrel. By 2015 it was in the low $40s, and it is still there today. Venezuela is not a rich country, although most Venezuelans believe it is. It has a lot of oil, but it produces almost nothing else and imports practically everything it consumes. So it is rich when oil is at $100 – but it is very poor when it is below $50. The country is therefore now broke. For reasons having nothing to do with alleged plots by the US or the wicked local elites, per capita income in Venezuela has fallen by more than half in the past two years. So people are angry, including many of the poor people who benefitted from Chavez’s generosity with the oil revenues back in the Good Old Days. There is a presidential election due next year, and as things stand now Maduro would probably lose by two-to-one. The National Assembly has had a twothirds majority of opposition members since the 2015 election, and it has been pressing hard to bring the presidential election forward to this year. Maduro had to stop that, and his first step was to have the Supreme Court, which is packed with Chavez and Maduro appointees, strip the National Assembly of all its powers and take them for itself. This is what triggered the daily anti-government demonstrations that began in early April. The Supreme Court’s action was clearly unconstitutional, and after three days that also saw protests from members of his own party Maduro ordered the judges to backtrack on their decree. But the protesters, with the bit between their teeth, stayed out in the street. Despite 70 dead in the past three months, they are still there today. So Maduro, desperate to sideline the National Assembly, then came up with the idea of rewriting the constitution. There was no referendum to test popular support for this idea, and the people in the “constituent assembly” are being chosen according to rules set by the Maduro government. Nobody is fooled by all this flim-flam, and it is no surprise that Oscar Perez, whether he is a deluded revolutionary or a secret government stooge flying false colours, chose to drop his little hand-grenades on the Supreme Court. It has become a symbol of the illicit manipulation by which Maduro clings to power, and therefore a natural target for those who oppose the government (or pretend to). In either case, Maduro has his pretext, and will now clamp down harder and try to terrify the opposition into submission. It is probably going to get much nastier yet in Venezuela.

Reporter’s Notebook by Stephen Petrick The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall had a lovely dessert of strawberries, cream and cake while visiting the Wellington Farmers Market last Friday. They had pleasant company along the table, a picturesque park and blue water to their back and about 500 photographers documenting their every move. Although organizers of royal tours try to make it seem so casual, there is nothing ordinary about visits to Canada involving members of what’s arguably the world’s most famous family. I’ve spent several years working in journalism, but I’ve never had a day like Friday, June 30, 2017, when I covered the visit of Prince Charles and Camilla to the Quinte area. Community newspaper work is usually routine. Drive to an event, park your car, get out and record what’s happening. But, this event was different. To gain media access to the tour, journalists had to file paper work – the stuff that proves you’re not a terrorist. And thankfully the people at CFB Trenton, who co-ordinated much of the activities, processed mine in time, despite it being submitted hideously late. To properly cover the events in Wellington, I learned, I’d have to travel with a media tour bus. That bus left the base at 10:30 a.m. and took us to the headquarters of the Advanced Warfare Centre, where us paparazzi folks were shepherded into a pen like cattle. There we waited for about an hour for the royal guests to arrive. As the TV journalists fretted about how to cover their live hits for noon-hour broadcasts, those of us with less deadline pressure chatted casually. I laughed out loud when another print reporter noticed a Canadian Forces member sweeping the tiniest speckles of dirt from the sidewalk by the entrance. “Everyone’s got to be perfect for the prince,” he observed. After Charles’ and Camilla’s uninteresting entrance to the building, we were whisked in to watch the Prince meet with members of the Canadian Airborne Regiment, who gave a parachute demonstration. It went quickly and it was impossible to hear what the Prince of Wales said to the troops. No matter, though; it was clearly just small talk. Journalists on other buses were ferried to other events on the base involving Camilla. Minutes later we were back on the bus. A few members of the travelling British press – blokes my editor Chris Malette (who had covered other Royal tours) had warned me would be insuf-

ferable whiners – joined us. Sure enough, they complained on the whole trip to Wellington about how uninteresting the military photo-ops were. But, upon arrival in the charming Prince Edward County town, it was clear we were about to witness something special. The morning’s rainstorm had cleared and the sun was shining. Hundreds of people were already lining Main Street, nestled behind roadblocks. We journalists were let through and told we could gather on a makeshift pedestal or the stairway of the Wellington United Church. As Charles and Camilla arrived to applause and squeals of glee, the media mob followed them into the market. It was loud and crazy, but the royal couple, to their credit, realized every vendor wanted to see them, so it appeared they took time to stop and chat at every table, pretending to be oblivious to the mobs of people around them. Midway through, the aforementioned strawberry lunch took place. Every common man and woman at the table, it appeared to me, seemed stunned, as if they were saying in their minds “What am I supposed to say to the Prince Charles and Camilla?” After an hour or so, the Royal Couple made their way back onto Main Street and greeted more of their fans. That’s when the best pictures were made. Shortly later, they drove off, the street cleared and journalists returned to the buses from whence they came. It was a day full of long waits, balanced with intense bursts of action; snapping the camera’s shutter as much as possible when there was a clear view and scribbling into a notebook what sounds, what words, what names could be legibly heard amid the noisy crowd. The day also demonstrated the at-times-testy relationships journalists have with the public relations specialists who move them around. On a few occasions, I found myself casting withering looks to tour handler people who told me “You can’t go there.” But, when we returned to the bus, or tour co-ordinator had awesome chicken sandwiches, purchased from a locally eatery, waiting for us. The meal, complements, of the tour we were told, was an answer to the most common question asked by journalists that day: “Is there a way we can get lunch?”

Haverock Revival rocks out July 7-8 BY BILL FREEMAN
Havelock – It’s rock ‘n roll revival time in Havelock. The second annual Haverock Revival lights up the famous twin stages July 7-8 with a bevy of classic rock acts ready to amp up the crowd. The piece de resistance will be an electrifying performance by The Rock Pack Saturday night featuring legends like Bill Kimball, lead singer for the chart-topping band Toto, Gregg Rolie, the original singer for Santana, Steve Augeri, former lead singer of Journey, Lou Gramm, the original lead vocalist for multi-platinum rockers Foreigner and John Payne, former lead singer for super group ASIA and the musical entrepreneur behind this all-star collection of rockers. The Haverock rock festival kicks off July 7 with 1980’s punk club faves Teenage Head followed by two of Canada’s finest musical products, 54-40 and Colin James; both very much a part of the current
national music scene and a perfect summertime rock combo. Valedictorian’s humour a fun tribute at Centre Hastings Secondary school graduation BY SUE DICKENS
Madoc – Students and staff of Centre Hastings Secondary School put exams behind them as they celebrated the end of the year with graduation ceremonies on June 29. Some of the students received multiple awards including Sydney Danford (medal of high standing in the university pathway) who received seven awards including The Medal of the Governor General of Canada and Cameron Hamilton (top standing in the college pathway) who received six awards including the CHSS Co-operative Education Award. Valedictorian Noah Latendre provided his own brand of humour as he spoke that evening. “Thank you teachers, staff, parents and everyone else who has gathered here tonight to celebrate the graduating class of 2017. Now, I know what you are thinking. Isn't the valedictorian supposed to be the top of their class academically? The most athletically inclined and someone who can connect with all students? Well, yeah, we're just gonna just pretend for tonight,” he said with a huge grin, set-
ting the tone for his speech. He talked about the “blood, sweat and tears shed to get us to this point.” He singled out some of the staff too including “Peter Ross doing squats in the hallways or shooting basketballs, instead of kicking us out of the gym at lunch, or Mrs Neumann-Stephens asking us where on the “deadly boulder” we are today, or sweet Patti Marlin making sure that everyone got breakfast to start their day.” He also thanked his teachers who “gave me countless extensions I would not have passed high school without.” It was a time of making “great memories,” he said. He talked about the good times and the bad. “Some people may have hated these four years, others may have loved it. But either way, it's shaped us, and if anything CHSS has given us all something. A strong education, hopefully, but also friends or frenemies, memories, or nightmares. “Centre Hastings Secondary School has given every single graduating student in this room a little something that we will remember for the rest of our lives. And, even if not,
that's pretty alright too.” His final words were in keeping with the spirit of his speech: “Life's like a box of chocolate, make lemonade. Thank you everybody.”

Madoc Cadet Corps Stirling hosts birthday bash celebrates 65th anniversary at ceremonial review BY SUE DICKENS
Madoc — The 385 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps celebrated its 65th anniversary at the annual review held on Sunday, June 11 with about 100 attending the ceremonial inspection. “We’re celebrating 65 years of continuing service in the community and 20 happy years using the Kiwanis Club as our home,” said Commanding Officer Roy Matecheskie. The club is the location of the old Madoc armoury. “Every year we have to do an annual review where we are graded on how the cadets do every year,” commented Matecheskie. “I started in Madoc cadets when in high school in 1975 and have been there ever since,” he told the Central Hastings News. A highlight of the event was the presentation of two top awards. The Lord Strathcona Medal was awarded to Warrant Officer Maggie Downer. The medal is the highest award bestowed
upon a Canadian cadet. It is given in recognition of exemplary performance in physical and military training. The Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence is a Canadian Cadet medal, which is available to members of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, Royal Canadian Army Cadets, and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The Legion Medal of Excellence was presented to Chief Warrant Officer Alex Walsh. The Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence is awarded annually to the cadet having shown a high degree of participation and leadership in the area of citizenship and in meeting and enhancing the aims and objectives of the cadet organization. The Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence is a Canadian Cadet medal, which is available to members of the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, Royal Canadian Army Cadets, and the Royal Canadian Air Cadets.

Stirling—The annual celebration of Canada Day was a tasty occasion Saturday as a large crowd enjoyed free hot dogs and hamburgers, all cooked by council and staff, followed by birthday cake topped with fresh strawberries. The event, moved indoors to the arena because of threatening clouds, included plenty of music plus a bouncy castle, an obstacle course and face painting for kids. Even adults got in on the face painting, with many sporting Canada 150 logos, flags and red maple leaves. As always, the day ended with fireworks. Both Hastings-Lennox and Addington MP Mike Bossio and Hastings-Prince Edward MPP Todd Smith were on hand after a busy day attending other celebrations around their ridings. “We are so blessed to live in this country,” said Bossio, who was clearly enjoying the evening. “Thank you for coming and celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday.”
Smith, who brought his family to enjoy the event, was also having a great time. “It’s great to see the fire chief and police chief cooking the burgers!” he quipped. “We do live in the best country in the world. Happy Canada Day!” Mayor Rodney Cooney thanked them both for coming to share Stirling’s birthday bash, and he also thanked CAO Roxanne Hearns and receptionist Sydney Dowdall for all their work in planning the event and staff and councillors for their cooking efforts. He also named some of the many innovations created by Canadians over the past 150 years, saying Canada is a place of innovation. A highlight was the presentation of Volunteer of the Year awards to Kevin (Artey) Johnson, Jack Rushnell and Helen Cofell. A fourth person will be honoured at the next meeting of council at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 17.

Norwood – Asphodel-Norwood showed off its colours during a Canada 150 celebration that filled the community centre and spilled over into the pristine park nearby by with families enjoying the splash pad and playground and walking trail. With the NHL-sized arena mixed weather was not a factor as people enjoyed a range of activities indoors that included musical entertainment, children’s activities and bouncy castles, displays and a barbecue. The traditional presentation of the Jack and Marguerite Stewart Community Recognition Award capped the opening ceremonies with longtime local volunteers Colleen and John Terpstra joining a distinguished list of winners. Bud Wrightly was also honoured as senior of the year along with two local youth, provincial Legion public speaking champion Kathleen Walsh and novice Hornets hockey player and OMHA essay winner Sheldon Bolton. Musical entertainment was provided by the Donegal Fiddlers and Kevin Hornsby. Norwood Pentecostal Church hosted two bouncy castles and dished out cotton candy and popcorn and the Norwood Lioness Club oversaw a special “buried treasure”
children’s corner. The Norwood IODE served up ice cream. Outside, the Norwood District Skating Club hosted the annual bike decorating contest and earlier in the afternoon the Mill Pond Forest Trails was officially opened.

Norwood Country Jamboree ready to rock July 13 BY BILL FREEMAN
Norwood — After a smashing first year, the Norwood Country Jamboree returns to the Asphodel-Norwood Community Centre for another musical celebration July 13-16. The four-day event with camping on the fairgrounds made a successful shift from Lindsay in 2016 and will deliver the same down-home country that drew large crowds to the A-N Centre. This year’s show kicks off July 13 with performances by Taylor Bradley, John Arthur Milner, Shirley Diane Baker, Paul Wasson, and Tom Mark and the Hughey Band. The music continues Friday with Jade Eagleson, Kirk Bates, Scotty Gartshore, The Swinging Doors, and the Douglas Connection.
Saturday’s lineup includes D.J. Rowatt, Tracy Ryan, Dave Barber, Chuck Sims, and James Ryce, and Sunday’s gospel-themed show features Linda Evans, Suzanne Fortin, Penny Scaife, Gord Youmans, and Percey Kinney. There will also be an open mic sessions. Rough camping is available on a firstcome first-served basis with a pump-out station on the grounds. There are also showers available at the community centre. Jamboree founder Ab Heffernan and his family made the move to Norwood after seven years in Lindsay, and loyal devotees and other music fans made their way to the new venue. “My father has had a love for classic country music all his life (and) had a dream
over 10 years ago that he presented to my brother Kevin and I and our mom Carole Jean,” his daughter Lynn recalled last year. “He knew he could put a fantastic lineup together and wanted our help.” The family said yes and the proof of success is on stage in Norwood. “Lindsay was a wonderful place for us to start out at, but Norwood has always been the very first choice for location.” The Norwood Lions will serve breakfast Friday to Sunday morning with dinner on Friday and Saturday prepared by Taylor’s Custom Meats & Catering. Daniel Joseph Castellano, 38, of Bowmanville has been charged with the following offences: explosives — making or possessing for unlawful purpose (12 counts) with intent to destroy or damage property, place or throw an explosive substance; breach of firearms regulation — store firearm or restricted weapon (four counts); possession of weapon for dangerous purpose (two counts); mischief under $5,000; possession of property obtained by crime — over $5,000 (2 counts); possession of Break In Instruments; possession of property obtained by crime — under $5,000; possession of a schedule II substance — cannabis marijuana — over 30 grams. The accused was held for a bail hearing scheduled at the Ontario Court of Welcome to Justice in Cobourg on June 28 and remains in custody at the time of LOCATI ON this press release. Warkworth — Several pipe bombs, handguns and long guns with ammunition, and stolen property and more have been seized by the OPP following an investigation which has resulted in a slew of charges. It all began when an explosion that happened at a Warkworth business on Banta Road on June 9 resulted in the Northumberland detachment of the OPP getting involved and conducting an investigation. Investigators determined that an explosive device (pipe bomb) had been detonated inside an unoccupied vehicle on the property. No one was injured as a result of the blast. As a result of the investigation on June 27, Criminal Code search warrants were executed on two properties: a home in Bowmanville and a vacant lot in Havelock-BelmontMethuen Township (Peterborough County), resulting in a male being arrested at the Peterborough County property. The children’s games, the music from Men of Service and Freddy Vette and the Flames, and the official ceremonies all went ahead as planned outside. Additionally, the festivities at Huntingdon Veterans Hall were already inside so they were not affected either. “They had roughly 200 people show up throughout the day so there was a big crowd turnout there as well,” said Hinks. Bass anglers flock to Madoc Madoc – Most locals know the quality fishing in Moira Lake, but it was evident in spades on bass season opening. June 17 was the opening of bass season on Moira Lake and it was either feast or famine, say organizers of the Bass Mani derby, “with one lady catching 22 bass and others catching only a few.” The weigh-in, live release and random draw prizes were at Bailey’s Cottages on the west end of the lake. • First Prize: $500. at 4.7 lbs. was won by A.J. Vilneff, Tweed. • Second Prize: $400. at 3.9 lbs. won by Joe Beattie, Belleville. • Third Prize: $250. 3.8 lbs. (tie) won by A. J. Vilneff, Tweed, & Alan Sajonds, Markham. Marmora Canada Day a go, parade too, despite early rain scare BY SUE DICKENS
Marmora – “Canada Day is a go! Parade is a go!” That was the rallying message posted on Facebook on the morning of July 1 as folks waited to learn if the rainy weather was going to impact their Canada 150 celebrations. Umbrellas were up occasionally but not for long and the outdoor activities continued with entertainment, a fundraising barbecue put on by the Crowe Valley Lions Club, free ice cream and strawberries offered as they are every year by the Marmora Pentecostal Church and free balloons and more from the Free Methodist Church. “This is just a wonderful day we are having. We’re lucky we live in Canada the number one country in the world,” said Ian Halford who was filling the red balloons helium. For Lucas, age 4 and his sister Alexis, age 8, who were with their parents Phil and Leanne Snow of Marmora, the free ice cream and strawberries made it a sweet day. Ruth Miner, 85 years young, positioned herself along the parade route in downtown Marmora so she could
get the best view of the colourful floats. She wrapped herself in a Canadian flag just for the occasion. “This is such a friendly town. It’s good to see people out and hopefully this guy, (she pointed upwards to the sky) will make sure the weather cooperates,” she said with a big grin. “We’ve got our problems along with every other country in the world at this point but Canada is the best as far as I am concerned,” she added. Nicole Reid agreed. She and her 13-month-old daughter Ashtyn were there waving the Canada flag and watching for dad Chad Reid who is a firefighter to drive by in one of the firetrucks in the parade. “I think Canada is just such a special country. With what’s going on in the world today we need to take time to celebrate our uniqueness and diversity.” “The boat parade is a go (put on by the Crowe Lake Waterways Association) and the fireworks are a go.” Those were the final words of the day posted to their Facebook page bringing to an end with a bang a very successful special celebration in Marmora.

Westben’s Canada Dreams concert attracts close to 1,000 BY SUE DICKENS
Campbellford – Westben’s free community concert Canada Dreams was a success. “We think it was closer to 1,000 (attendance) as some people came for all of it and some came for specific times,” said Westben’s marketing director, Donna Bennett. “There were lots of new people and regulars, people for the US and from across Canada,” she added. Celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, the concert was held July 2. From the Westben Dream Canoe to displays of art and photography by Ah! Arts and Heritage Centre Warkworth and Spirit of the Hills, there were activities for everyone. Local anglers haul top honours in Berkley B1 pro bass event BY CHRIS MALETTE
Belleville – Out of hundreds of top-ranked professional and amateur bass anglers, two local bassmasters were thrilled with the chance to compete in a top-drawer tournament here last weekend. Walter Domjancic, of Marmora, and Dean Gaspic, of Havelock, teamed up to finish 15th out of more than 85 teams of anglers in the first-ever Berkley B1 Canadian Bass Open series stops on the Bay of Quinte at Belleville. Both anglers decided to team up for the Berkley because it’s the first time it’s been held in local waters or outside Quebec, but most weekends you can find them competing on other circuits such as the FLW (Fishing League Worldwide pro bass) and others, including the Quinte Fishing Series. “This is as close as you’ll come to a large, U.S. style professional tournament, this right here,” said Gaspic. Domjanjic agreed, saying it’s “great to see this coming to Ontario and great for the Bay of Quinte.” Of that fishery, the bass boys were full of high praise. “It’s a fantastic fishery, right from the walleye and the pike here, but the bass fishing is phenomenal,” said the Marmora angler. Look for the pair to be back on the water at Deseronto this coming weekend and fanning out across the province in search of the lunker load that will put them atop the leaderboard for some of the stunning first prize hauls the bass tournaments now offer to lure the top anglers. Foster parents’ ‘relief time’ poses challenge to kids in CAS care BY JACK EVANS
Belleville -- Among issues discussed at the June meeting of the Highland Shores Children’s Aid Society last week was concerns by some of their youthful wards about being bounced around from one home to another in order to accommodate relief time for foster parents. At a time when the agency is seeking to better serve its young people, they agreed it is a problem to be dealt with. But they also recognized that foster parents are entitled to some respite in what is often a
challenging situation, sometimes balancing foster children with their own children. There were no answers to the issue at the meeting, but CAS manager Mark Kartusch, with the enthusiasm that only the captain of a ship might display, said “this is a great problem to work on.” Some board members who recently attended a meeting of the provincial association of CAS agencies, cautioned that there might be some unfavourable publicity in the weeks ahead as two or three cases of neglect or mistreatment of some

youngsters in care had been determined. Although there are no indications that any of them took place in the local region, past experience indicates such reports tend to cast the entire system in doubt and mistrust. Most of the meeting dealt with governance issues, many of them related to adjusting to the province’s recently passed new child services bill. That process is expected to involve staff for months ahead. The agency’s annual general meeting is set for Thursday, Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the Picton Town Hall.

Quinte Health Care says it’s in the black, with a $1 million surplus BY JACK EVANS
Wellington – A $1 million surplus for its fiscal year end was part of the good news revealed at the June meeting of the Quinte Health Care board held in Wellington Tuesday, June 27. Other reports cited the purchase of new modern equipment, a vigorous response to physician recruiting efforts, improved performance in many categories and successful recruitment of some new directors to replace those whose terms have expired. One kink in all this was that while interest in serving on the four-hospital board came from Bancroft, Trenton and Picton areas, there were none from Belleville, which has the core facilities. The director in charge of recruiting board members, Lynda Mungall, expressed both surprise and disappointment for that result. As for doctor recruitment, she
proposed adding one medical oncologist for the hospital’s busy cancer unit, one orthopedic surgeon, plus one permanent and one part-time radiologist. She also recommended adding several family physicians to ensure Trenton Memorial Hospital’s inpatient unit is now fully covered. Finally, she noted that in trying to hire six internal medicine physicians to meet new hospital standards, 13 applied. One director questioned whether news reports of doctors hired through municipal subsidy programs were included in those figures. Chief of Medical Staff Dr. Dick Zoutman, replied, ”Yes” in most cases. Taking on hospital privileges is optional but most of the new doctors sign on. Mungall explained that the hospital’s growing reputation for being a well-run operation plus a lot of high quality equipment helps draw interest. Asked if the recent wave of
publicity about the Quinte area might be a factor, Dr. Zoutman chimed in, “absolutely. They are aware that this is a well-run hospital and this is a lovely area to live in.” Thus, it appears, promotions by the Bay of Quinte Regional Marketing board are drawing more than just tourists. As for that $1 million surplus, it came with a caution that it is not an answer to all of the corporations’ problems, but just a relief. It puts the board in a solid position, “and we intend to maintain that position,” said Chairman Doug McGregor. The board also formally adopted a recommendation to remodel its advisory committee, paring it down from 52 to 32, and to include at least a dozen patient representatives, who could be former patients or members of their immediate family. There will also be community-at-large reps and ones from each of the foundations plus the North Hastings funding committee.

Four injured when SUV collides with freight train Norwood — Four people suffered non-life threatening injuries when a SUV collided with a train on the Third Line of Asphodel Township on June 27 shortly before 6 p.m. Peterborough County OPP say the SUV was travelling northbound on the Third Line when it failed to stop at an uncontrolled railway crossing and collided with an eastbound freight train just north of Highway 7. The collision impact sent the
SUV down a steep embankment. Police say that the four occupants were taken to an area hospital with injuries ranging from serious to minor. An ORNGE air ambulance landed in a nearby field and transported one of the injured to hospital. “Police wish to remind motorists to come to a complete stop at uncontrolled railway crossings and to only proceed when the crossing is clear,” said OPP Const. Jason Folz.

A Visit to the Petrified Wood & Art Gallery in Ogallala, Nebraska BY JOHN M. SMITH
I don’t often write about an art gallery as a tourist destination, but I was particularly impressed by the Petrified Wood & Art Gallery when I found it in Ogallala, Nebraska. Not only was the art work both unusual and stunning, but the artists themselves, twin brothers, were a delight. Harvey and Howard Kenfield are 89 year old identical twins, and they have been working with petrified wood for the past 65 years. Both were on sight when I visited, and both were delighted to show off their collection and work. The twins now walk with canes, but they’re still very active – and they’ll often disappear into their on-site workshop – to work on another artistic piece. The one twin confided to me that he “felt like he was 39 years old, but they tell me that I’m 89.” Both still had a twinkle in their eye and a love for their work. After being drafted into the Army and serving together in Korea in the early 1950s, Harvey and Howard returned home and began collecting stones, artifacts, and petrified wood. From 1954 on, the ‘boys’ have spent their lives collecting, designing, grinding, and polishing; they’ve attended many gem and mineral shows over the years – and spent most summer vacations searching for petrified wood (which is a name given to wood that has been turned into stone as the organic tissue is replaced by silica and other minerals). They also had ‘day jobs’ in Ogallala, in local manufacturing plants, but they retired from these back in the 1980s – and opened a Gallery. By the year 2000, the Kenfields decided to donate their collection to the Western Nebraska Community Foundation, with the understanding that it must remain in Ogallala. By 2007, the ‘Friends of the Gallery’ was established and owned the collection. By 2011, the Gallery moved to a larger facility, at 418 East 1st St. in Ogallala. The Petrified Wood & Art Gallery is a showcase of natural history that specializes in ancient woods and fossils that have been collected by Harvey and Howard. There are many Native American artifacts and arrowheads to be found here, too – and gemstone butterflies and toadstools – and even fossilized leaf and fish imprints. Indeed, it’s quite a collection! Admission is free, but donations are accepted. It was the appearance of Harvey and Howard themselves that made my visit extra special, for they’re easy to chat with and are so very proud of this collection. They love to talk about the pieces! They told
nied by a piece of music that seems particularly appropriate. For example, the church music box plays “How Great Thou Art”, the wagon plays “Country Roads Take Me Home”, and the outhouse plays “Alone Again Naturally”. There are also works by other artists on display here, including a great collection of pewter figures, bullet slugs, arrowheads, and some large marble sculptures (including a very large bust of Sitting Bull). One artist has even turned his collection of arrowheads into a stone buffalo. There’s also, of course, a great variety of items for sale in the gift shop. me that some of the petrified wood was found right here in Nebraska, but they also found some in other western states, including Wyoming, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. I strolled through the Gallery with them and saw cross-cuts of petrified black walnut, Douglas fir, elm, and pine that had been polished to such a luster that these pieces almost appeared as wet! I also saw some ancient petrified bamboo palm fronds and whole pine cones. There are some very large but intricately detailed art pieces carved from the petrified wood, with stunning geometric patterns – and whittle down into some rather unique shapes. There’s also a collection of spheres that Harvey and Howard had cut, ground, and polished – and
they confided that each required “from 30 to 80 hours to complete”. However, my favourite pieces were the cleverly designed, hand-crafted, three-dimensional buildings and objects that the brothers have fashioned entirely out of petrified wood that looks amazingly like weathered barn wood. They told me that they achieved this effect by splitting the petrified wood into tiny slivers of rock that were then glued together. It’s very effective, and they’ve achieved the creation of incredible scenes of a bygone era, including cliff houses, farm houses, grain elevators, wagons, and churches. Their creations of barns, rural scenes, and even outhouses are done with such detail that they almost seemed to jump out at me - and each of their awesome music boxes is accompa-

The Good Earth We love to make, add to those lists about gardening
By Dan Clost This past week I was privileged to chat with a young couple. They had come into the nursery for advice about orange spots on the leaves of their apple trees. Gentle Reader, this column is not about gardening problems so if you want to learn about the various rusts in our area you can search the archives of this newspaper or hie yourself down to
your favourite nursery or garden centre. I was very much taken with their willingness to do something about a gardening challenge and their decision to go to a place where they could get some proper advice. We chatted for a bit; I suppose they might say they listened whilst I rambled. Mind you, they nodded at the right times and seemed encouraging. They were knowledgeable about their gardens and looking forward to the season. I made a few suggestions, e.g. start a journal, and investigate phenology-don’t let the fancy term put you off. GR, it is this type of conversation that makes my day job enjoyable and the reason for writing these columns. If you recall, last week’s column looked at things that had lost their importance to me as being gardening necessities. I ran out of space but one of the items I will add to the list is weed mat. However, that’s a future conversation. What is most important about your garden is that you like it. Our home gardens are for our enjoyment but if passersby like them too then that is a pleasant bonus. I very much appreciate it when someone pauses and takes a moment to ask a question or pass on a compliment.
Many of the flowers, i.e., catmint, alliums, pansies, water lilies, iris et al, are some shade or hue of purple: Mrs. Clost likes purple. The larger shrubs and trees, i.e. nannberry, wayfaring tree, Ivory Silk lilac tree, elderberry standard, Chinese flowering dogwood, et al, have predominantly white blooms: Mr. Clost likes white. We have many different hosta, coral bells, daylilies and grasses. Not because we’re building up a collection but because there was something about each plant that we found attractive. For me, that is a good enough reason for inclusion into our estate’s garden. One of my co-workers, a recent graduate of the horticultural program at Algonquin College, asked me what plants we had in our flower beds. Nobody had made that request of me before so I felt it important to recite the entire catalogue. About ten minutes later his eyes began to glaze over. I was still talking about the beds in our

front yard with side and back gardens yet to go. He excused himself saying that someone had called him on the radio and he had to help a customer. (Oddly, my yard radio is set to the same frequency but it didn’t pick up that particular call.) Perhaps, when I have time, I’ll write out the list and pass it on to him. What he failed to realize is that we have been stewards of this site for almost 30 years and that’s a lot of time for a gardener to acquire a plant or two. For you experienced gardeners, take a moment to inventory your plants and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. If I were to make a proper list I would have to include those plants
which did not prosper under my care. Petunias continue to defeat me- whatever gardening gene I might have it must include an anti-petunia chromosome or two. As my experience has increased (experience is defined by not making the same mistake more than twice- planting petunias not included) the compost pile contains fewer examples of death by horticultural misadventure. By all means, accumulate as eclectic a grouping of plants you wish but know how to properly care for them. However, there is a responsibility shared by gardeners and that is to walk softly on this good earth which sustains us.

New mural brightens Highland Shores CAS lobby BY JACK EVANS
The Highland Shores Children’ Aid Society’s m u l t i - m i l l i o n - d o l l a r, Belleville office complex opened just a few years ago, but something was lacking. CAS board members decided the bare wall of the reception area needed to be brightened up and, recently, a mural
was suggested. Lindsay Robinson, the artistically-talented daughter of one of the agency’s staff members, submitted a draft for a colourful mural featuring elephants, giraffes, a parrot and a monkey. It was an instant hit with the board, especially since it was done on a volunteer basis. Visiting children and oth-
ers were entranced as they watched the work unfold. It continues to gather interest by visitors, and add a colourful touch to the building, CAS officials assure. The board rewarded Lindsay with a certificate of recognition for her efforts, which will be a feature attraction in the office for years to come.

Archivist updates Hastings County on progress BY JACK EVANS
Belleville – The archives for Hastings County and Belleville are growing rapidly, county council was told last Thursday. In a delegation to council, archivist Amanda Hill also reported their use is also expanding rapidly and she showed statistics to support that. Inquiries by telephone, email and visits are mounting up for family backgrounds, historic events and general research purposes. As the archives become better known both for their existence and their function, donations of artifacts flow in faster, she said. One significant development is the return to the local archives
of materials, which had been sent for storage in Toronto for lack of suitable space locally. They included some 650 pounds of letters and literary manuscripts of renowned author Sir Gilbert Parker, whose early life was spent in Belleville. Samples of inquiries include: Hotel Quinte, LaBarge family history, indigenous people in Queensborough, and sawmill accident, Deseronto. To top off her presentation, Mayor Tom Deline, of Centre Hastings, presented her with a large photograph of county council members from the 1920s. Someone had left the photo at the Madoc offices, for archive purposes.
Folk honoree Jadea Kelly plays the Old Church Trenton - Canadian Folk Music Award winner Jadea Kelly, 2016 ‘Contemporary Singer of the Year’, is appearing at The Old Church Theatre on July 7. Kelly continues to spend her time living and writing between Toronto and Nashville. Her body of work has earned a number of impressive worldwide reviews and radio play, with tours across North America & Europe. She has performed at a number of Canadian festivals and high profile venues including the Calgary Folk Festival, Edmonton’s Interstellar Rodeo, Elora Ontario’s Riverfest with Blue Rodeo, The National Arts Centre in Ottawa and the Massey Hall Presents concert series in Toronto.
Jadea has invited the talented Masha to open the concert for her. Originally from in Minsk, Belarus, Masha is a well-traveled performer, touring through Rome, London and several other European cities in recent years. At only 20-years-old Masha has settled for time being in Prince Edward County. The Old Church Theatre at 940 Bonisteel Rd. is a beautifully renovated 140-year-old church, with comfortable seating and a bar. Shirley Atha (nee Morrison) aged 81, was born in Sault Ste-Marie, and more recently of Brighton. Beloved wife of Dennis Atha. Much loved mother of Andrew (Andrea) and Jennifer and grandmother of Connor and Graham. Before illness struck, Shirley enjoyed being an active member of the Sweet Adelines of Belleville for a number of years. Also an enthusiastic artist and member of the Presqu’ile walking group. The family would like to thank the staff of Hastings Manor for the care and support they provided. As preferred by her family, there will be no service at this time. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Belleville.

BRADEN, John McColl (1942 - 2017) John died peacefully at home in Queensborough, Ont on June 23, 2017 of multiple myeloma at age 75. John was born in Waterdown, Ont. He was educated at Hillfield College, Trinity College School, McMaster University, Western University Law School and the Institut d’études politiques de Paris. He lived and worked in Cameroun and Japan, then published a book on how to read Japanese. He recently published his book ‘Because the Future Matters; Let’s stop letting modern economics and our energy addiction ruin almost everything.’ John leaves his wife Judith Wolfe, daughter Ann, stepdaughter Janeva, granddaughter Ainsley, siblings Bill (Anita), Norm (Tonny), Gwyn Buck, Dave (Cathy) and Mike (Clare Wasteneys), and first wife Jane. He also leaves many nieces and nephews, all of whom were inspired by his unwavering commitment to environmental ethics and his questioning mind. His friends from many walks of life knew him as a gentle, principled, immeasurably kind man. The family wishes to warmly thank all who gave John their love and support during his last months, especially Judith and George Best. A celebration of life will be held Friday, July 7 at 1 pm at the Queensborough Community Centre, 1853 Queensborough Rd, Queensborough, Ont (near Madoc). Proposed changes to work safety programs could impact Hastings County BY JACK EVANS
Belleville – A resolution circulated by Lanark County that criticizes a new bill that would add expenses to residential care facilities in Ontario drew sharp interest from Hastings County council and officials last week. But there was no motion to endorse it – at least not yet. CEO Jim Pine said he shares the concerns Lanark has expressed, but county staff are still doing research to see if the situation is
exactly as spelled out by Lanark. If it is, it would definitely have a huge impact on Hastings’ finances. Both counties have made arrangements with the province in recent years to opt into a less costly category because of the small impact of accidents in county home environments. It involves a separate insurance policy as well as a basic fee of $35,000 to the province, said Pine. He said concern is warranted as the bill is sponsored by a parliamentary assistant to a cabinet minister and therefore might just pass. Pine and Emergency Services Chief Doug Socha both also were critical of the province’s response to a no-cost pilot project to improve ambulance services by using a special software program that allows data to be shared between the region’s two dispatch centres. The two dispatch centres, in Kingston and Peterborough, cannot communicate as it stands now and the pilot project ensures the nearest ambulance to a problem is contacted in all cases. “The application was made in January and we can get no response from the Minister of Health,” said Pine, who blamed it on a communications problem. He suggested writing a letter to a new minister of technology who might be able to sort it out.

Quinte Waste Solutions is running a two-week campaign, from July 10 to 21, called Respect the Collect. It’s encouraging residents to be courteous of its workers, given that they have what’s been rated the sixth most dangerous job in Canada. This is due to the hazardous materials, heavy equipment and road accidents, QWS says. “Recycling truck drivers are faced with difficult situations every day they come to work,” said Miya Hemmersbach, special events and outreach assistant for Quinte Waste Solutions. “This campaign is for residents to show gratitude to their recycling collectors and become more educated about the role these drivers play.” Residents can reach out to respectthecollect@quinterecycling.org or 613-394-6266 to send a thank you to their driver. Residents would be asked to provide their address so that their driver receives the message. “I think this is going to be really good for the drivers, to realize that residents notice the work they put in and appreciate them showing up in all conditions to get the job done” said Jeff Howard, driver route supervisor for HGC Management, which co-ordinates recycling duties. “This campaign really is about recognizing the vital role drivers play in the success of diverting waste from landfill.”

Belleville – A proposed youth conference this fall in the Quinte area earned ready support from Hastings County Council last week. Maddison Ellis, in a delegation, asked for some financial support for the project, scheduled for September in Tyendinaga Hall. She said young people from 14 through 25 from all over the county and throughout the Quinte area would be invited to discuss issues such as more participation and volunteering in society. As a student apprentice with county staff last summer, Ellis had already earned the respect of both staff and council members and got a response from CEO Jim Pine that staff could find up to $5,000 toward a keynote speaker for the event, plus support in kind.Past Warden and
Tyendinaga Reeve Rick Philips reported that he has been working with Ellis and her group as an advisor and is certain the project will be a success and deserves support. Also making a brief presentation was former MP Daryl Kramp who introduced himself as candidate for the provincial Progressive Conservative party for the next election. He said he is inspired to get involved again in politics for the sake of his grandchildren. “Yesterday’s and promises won’t pay the bills,” he said, suggesting his experience in the political system will serve the riding in good stead. “There are many challenges and I understand the process. There is a huge disconnect between the rural and urban areas of Ontario and I want to work to fix that. I’m looking forward to the challenges.”
