LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to June By Bill Dougherty Online social calendar: www.trendspublishing.com/social-calendar
Welcome back! From all of us at this publication and the Trends Charitable Fund, we hope you had a great summer. We are delighted to bring you our first September issue in more than two decades. Since the Valley has exploded in population and growth, things start even earlier than before. We are pleased to welcome several new contributors to the magazine. Cathy Bentley is now our protocol columnist. Jacci Dixon and Kirk Jarrett are our new travel correspondents starting in October. Yetta Gibson and Paige Wheeler will join us in October with their takes on lifestyle, health, and wellness. These fine and gifted writers will join our other glittering array of contributors. We hope you give
all of them a big welcome. We are blessed to have them. Stay tuned – there’s always more … Sadly, we said goodbye last summer to philanthropist Ned Saban, 2005 Trends Best Dressed Joey Leslie, 1993 Fashionality Jamie Herzlinger, and Florist Dennis Thompson. These people did extraordinary things in our community. They will be missed.
Gotcha!
As the season kicks off, be very mindful of volunteers who head up seating and reservations. These people have more power than most believe. In my 32 years at Trends, I sat on the sidelines and watched two women well-known to the social community abuse this position. One has perished, and the other was sent to social Siberia. Don’t think for a second that there aren’t more people out there just like them. Pay attention, ladies and gentlemen; you have been warned.

SPOTLIGHT: MANDY’S RUN FOR THE ROSES
Food, Fashion, and the Iconic Kentucky Derby The first Saturday in May is synonymous with food, fashion, and the iconic Kentucky Derby. “Mandy’s Run for the Roses” celebrated these cherished traditions. Professional Event Planner Kim Gallagher, Founder and CEO of KG Events, partnered with Creations by Sergio Catering to deliver a truly spectacular affair. The effect allowed hosts like Mandy to truly relax and be a guest at their own party. Creations by Sergio delighted guests with bite-sized Beef Wellingtons, Maple Bacon-wrapped Andouille Sausages, Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail, Beef Tenderloin Sliders, “Hot Brown” Turkey Sliders and Sergio’s award-winning Taco Bar. Guests arrived to a bugle playing “Call to the Post” while greeted with champagne by a “living rose”. Inside, thousands of red roses, betting stations, mint juleps, and a life-sized horse with a jockey created a festive feel. Guests competed for titles like Best Hat, Most Dapper Man, and Best Dressed Couple.

LIFESTYLE EDITOR
LOVE A FARE By Patsy Lowry
‘’The most wonderful thing served at this table is togetherness!” I love to entertain. Do you? If not, why not reward your loved ones (and yourself) with an invitation to gather around your dining room table and share a fun, intimate dining experience. Set a beautiful table, serve delicious food, enjoy great conversations, and share stories and memories. We are living in a new and ever-changing technological world that often challenges our inner grace and peace of mind. I encourage you to take the time and effort to let your friends and family into your life in a new and special way. Start small. Keep it simple! Invite three people you care about to lunch or dinner. Serve comfort food that will make everyone feel relaxed, appreciated, warm, nourished, and loved. You can buy prepared food if you are not a cook. Put fresh flowers on the table.
Use place cards. Reward yourself by creating a fun, relaxing, and intimate time. Make your life richer and more interesting with new possibilities by being receptive to doing something different. Perhaps this is something that you have always wanted to do but have avoided doing. Now is the time to START!!!!!!!!!! By inviting people you care about into your home, you are creating a sense of joy and strengthening connections to enduring friendships and love. Open your eyes, your mind, and your heart to expand your sense of discovery, wonder, and pleasure. There is a special kind of magic that happens when you say, “Wel come to my home,” at your front door.

PROTOCOL: INSPIRATION
The Influence of Sydney Dye’s “Recipe for Living a Life of Protocol” on Mine! By Cathy Bentley Our national flag: the Arizona star is the bottom row, the third from the right, but you know that! “Cathy Bentley, here”, is how the erstwhile Gerry McNamara – of Saks at the Biltmore – taught me to answer the phone. His is now my phone protocol. Bill Dougherty, for reasons unconvincingly unknown, may rue his invitation to me to be the Trends protocol editor. He may have seen my gift from Judith Kunkel, a tee shirt that says, “I am silently correcting your grammar.”
Sydney Dye
My inspiration to say I would give it thought comes under the guise of Sydney Dye, 20 years younger than I. My daughter and I met her and her mother, Marian Allman, at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2017. Thank you for the entrée to that, Nancy Swanson. Sydney influenced our garden club in riveting ways that were fun and healthy. In one instance, she was explaining how healthy soil causes healthy growing climates. Pulling aside her table covering – voila! – her bare feet were in a box of soil containing worms, painting a never-to-be-forgotten picture of vermiculture! Though she had at least 40 more good years of sharing economical and smart ways to live and protect our wallets and the environment – including making your own glass cleaner from four ingredients you already have, and using a teak chopping board instead of Lucite – Sydney is now playing the sky course with my Leon. Also included are Joe Martin, who is still leaving candy wrappers on the grass; Dr. John Eisenbeiss, who complains he needs a lesson; and Dr. John McLoone, who takes three agonizing practice swings before every single shot for 18 holes. Sydney already has figured out the protocol for economizing strokes, learning how to use her Alien wedge – which she surely would have introduced to me if… There, for $2 at the non-existent Play It Again Sports, is the club that replaces all your short irons and sand wedges. You will shoot like Tiger Woods – pop it out high to satisfyingly find it right next to the hole – if you bother to read the explanatory booklet. Now you have to buy the Alien on Amazon: $16 for Liz Matthews and $23 for my son’s Father’s Day. This is a good idea. Good golfing protocol equals less decisionmaking on the course, of “course”, which equals speedier play (à la Sydney, whose father-in-law was Pete Dye)! This Good Idea is not to be confused with the original one, which isn’t so good… Try not to imagine Leon Bentley and John Amory hauling
14
two overloaded boats, two micromanaging wives, plus their six kids, racing each other from Phoenix at 4:30 a.m. to be the first one to reach the hill over which lay Lake Powell. Usually, John was the one who stood on his tow bar, grabbed two giant cans of Foster’s out of his cooler, and strolled down to Leon to say, “Time for a good idea”, (parents said this in lieu of a “beer” because they thought good protocol meant being good examples in front of children). A good idea was a good excuse for making it safely to another year of four days of camping. Sydney may now be reading Good Energy by Casey Means, a book given to me as a thank-you for remembering Brett Isbell’s mother, Janice, who was a dear friend and mentor. Janice, who died too early, taught me that dying people want ice cream, not the three squares before dessert. Janice liked me to sit on her bed and spoon-feed her. Bret Isbell – the youngest of the three who aligned with ours – gave me a copy of Good Energy, for which I thanked him. I stored it in the presents closet, as I have plenty of good energy, reaching up to place it next to The Marvelous Pigness of Pigs, which truly is marvelous. My hand slipped, but I was able to save the book from tumbling because my fourth finger got caught on page 57 during its descent. I glanced at the page, then settled down on the hood of my car to read chapter three, “Trust Yourself, Not Your Doctor.” After reading it, I ordered 12 copies to give to doctors, kids, and my friends. Several had already read it and agreed with its message. Though Janice died of lung cancer, she had never smoked or been around smoke. She had had a lot of “procedures/protocols.” This book changed my life. I may be sorry, but this year and a half of doing it my way (like Frank!) has been so freeing compared to the stories I’ve googled and seeing friends who followed orders. Not following protocol has allowed me to “vivir con la velocidad de la luz y quizás nunca envejecerás” (“Live at the speed of light and perhaps you will never grow old”) – Albert Einstein you recognize! If you agree and want to live to be the age of John McCain’s mother (who died at 106), or at least live to the age of 100 – like the man taped inside the door of my medicine cabinet, who is 100 years old and goes up at the mountain at noon and skis down after lunch – this entails walking alongside the moving walkway at airports, hovering your hand over the banister when climbing stairs in public places (it’s okay to grab on at home, as they may not find you if …), and not taking the elevator when your destination is just one floor up. Remember “the hover” as mental, which leads to physical acuity. After all, there comes a time for the protocol of aging. Sydney would have told you that.

CHARITY SPOTLIGHT: TEEN LIFELINE CONNECTIONS OF HOPE GALA
Turning Despair into Hope for 40 Years What made you say yes to serving as co-chairs for this year’s Teen Lifeline Connections of Hope Gala? When you look at the statistics around teen suicide in Arizona, it’s impossible to turn away. Frank and I chose to co-chair the Connections of Hope Gala because Teen Lifeline isn’t just raising awareness, they are saving lives every day. We want to help more people learn about Teen Lifeline and support its work to ensure no teen feels alone. What do you wish more people knew about Teen Lifeline? We wish more people understood that suicide is the second leading cause of death among Arizona youth, with about one young life lost every week. But we also want people to know there is help. The Teen Lifeline peer-to-peer hotline gives teens a free, confidential place to turn every single day when they need someone to listen. Trained peer counselors understand the unique pressures young people face today and provide a judgment-free space where teens can talk openly and feel heard and validated. This year marks 40 years of Teen Lifeline. What does that milestone mean to you? For four decades, Teen Lifeline has turned despair into hope for Arizona teens. It’s a privilege to be part of this milestone year and help ensure Teen Lifeline can continue its lifesaving work for the next 40 years. What can guests expect from this year’s Connections of Hope Gala? It’s one of the go-to events of the year in Paradise Valley! Guests can expect an extraordinary evening of hope, celebration and purpose, with fantastic food, entertainment, dancing and live and silent auction packages ranging from luxury getaways to unique experiences. Most importantly, the evening will provide guests the chance to join a movement to raise vital funds to help keep Teen Lifeline services free and accessible to Arizona teens. Barbara and Hugh Lytle will be honored at this year’s Gala. Why are they such fitting honorees for this milestone year? Barbara and Hugh embody the spirit of community leadership. For years, they have generously given their time and resources to Teen Lifeline and Arizona youth. Their commitment has helped Teen Lifeline grow and reach more young people. They truly inspire all of us to step up and make a difference.

Frank and Tobi Placenti
How is the Connections of Hope Gala different from other Gala fundraising events in the Valley? What truly sets Connections of Hope apart is its deep, singleminded focus on saving young lives in our immediate community. You feel a profound sense of unity when everyone is gathered around one shared mission: standing up for Arizona’s teens and making sure no child feels alone. Do you need a personal connection to teen suicide in order to attend the Connections of Hope Gala this year? With suicide being the second leading cause of death among Arizona’s youth, it touches so many of us. When a crisis impacts our youth at this scale, it becomes a shared personal responsibility for all of us to participate and support a solution. For more information visit TeenLifeline.org/Hope

In Paradise Valley and Arcadia, one mountain is interpreted two ways by these unique estates. Lakeside Lane, in stunning Clearwater Hills, captures views of the north slope of Camelback Mountain with timeless formality: soaring ceilings, carved cabinetry, and a primary suite with three patio decks built for slow, sweeping views. Suraya House in sought-after Arcadia takes in the mountain’s south slope, showcasing gallery-white walls, a black-marble kitchen, and world-class art that turns the space into as much curated collection as house. Same peak, two very different definitions of a room with a view — and both are right.

PARADISE VALLEY HERITAGE CELEBRATION
Whitney Hunchak, Kathy Hanke and Kathy George
Barb and Mark Stanton
On April 20, 2026, the Town of Paradise Valley Historical Advisory Committee gathered at the home of Beth McRae and Bill Doughtery. The evening brought together residents and community members who played a role in preserving the Town’s historic buildings and stories.
While the Town cannot always prevent demolition, it can often salvage meaningful architectural elements. One notable example is the 60-yearold Ascension Lutheran Church spire designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s longtime apprentice William Wesley Peters.
For nearly three decades, the committee has preserved Paradise Valley’s history by recording over 100 interviews about resident memories and community evolution. Recently, the committee expanded its oral history work to the built environment. Since 2023, it has recognized 16 homes and two churches that are at least 50 years old or reflect the Town’s architectural heritage. Preservation is not always simple.
The committee aims to preserve Paradise Valley history, ensuring it remains a visible and a valued part of the community for future generations. For more information: https://www.paradisevalleyaz.gov/89/ Historical-Advisory-Committee

2026 FASHIONALITY LUNCHEON AT OCEAN 44 It’s no secret that Ocean 44 is not open for lunch. However, for more than a decade they have made a wonderful exception for this publication. Each spring, we gather our new class of Fashionalities to mix and mingle with the staff, board members, and monthly contributors. The Trends Magazine Fashionality award is the oldest award in the state to honor women. Pretty impressive! The Trends Charitable Fund explained the selection process to the ladies in attendance. The afternoon would not have been possible without the help of Jen Moser, Prime Steak Concepts Brand Manager Oliver Badgio, and Jeff Mastro, who just happens to be our Fabulous Phoenician. SPOTLIGHT: CITY OF HOPE CANCER CENTER ARIZONA
A New Era for Accelerating Personalized Cancer Care By Kari Watts Advancing the Future of Cancer Care in Arizona City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona is beginning a new era for accelerating and expanding access to personalized cancer care. In August, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona welcomed Laurie Sicaeros, MHA, as its new market president. She enters at a pivotal moment for the organization as it delivers a cancer hospital for advanced comprehensive care, four outpatient centers, and one of the country’s leading genomics research institutes to patients across Arizona. City of Hope is one of the nation’s largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations, with a network of over 2,000 expert cancer physicians and scientists. In Arizona, that national system has a deep local footprint. The main hospital in Goodyear anchors outpatient care clinics in North Phoenix, North Scottsdale, Gilbert, and Prescott, bringing comprehensive cancer care closer to patients across Arizona. What sets City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona apart is its cancer only focus, meaning that there is expertise in a wide range of cancer types. Additionally, the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen), part of City of Hope, gives Arizona something few states have: a genomics institute and comprehensive cancer center operating in partnership to accelerate speed to care. TGen, led by Jeffrey Trent, PhD, President and Research Director of Translational Genomic Research Institute, helped pioneer precision medicine, which allows for tailoring treatment to the genetic makeup of an individual patient’s disease. “Together, genomics meets advanced cancer care at TGen and City of Hope, delivering precise leading-edge medicine designed for the individual.” – Jeffrey Trent, PhD, President and Research Director of TGen, part of City of Hope What does President Sicaeros’ arrival mean for people with cancer across Arizona? For more than 25 years, Sicaeros has been at the forefront of innovation, strategic growth, and building high-performing clinical organizations. She comes to City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona with expertise in building large multispecialty systems, scaling networks, and connecting physicians to the communities they serve. As president, she will translate the organization’s national cancer expertise into deeper local access, build stronger physician partnerships, and continue developing a cancer care network that reaches every corner of the state.

“When world-class research and patient care come together in the same community, innovation moves faster. Our collaboration with TGen helps accelerate discoveries from the lab to the center, giving patients access to more personalized treatments and better outcomes closer to home.” – Laurie Sicaeros, President, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona For patients, this means less distance to travel, less time between diagnosis and treatment, and a care plan shaped by the collective expertise available at any City of Hope location across the country. Photos by Scott Foust Studios
TGen researchers in the Banovich lab are working to better understand how cells interact with each other, building a foundation with an innovative technology in spatial transcriptomics. This technology offers a variety of ways to visualize samples and expand research. TGen’s researchers in the Scientific Technology Assessment Research Team (START) lab aim to accelerate the evaluation of pre-commercial and early-stage technologies that have the power to broadly impact scientific research at TGen and City of Hope.
Research is a real differentiator for City of Hope. What does the City of Hope-TGen collaboration mean for local patients? Together, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona and TGen are shortening the distance between a discovery and the Arizona patient who needs it most. The combination of strengths provides an optimal setting for translational science through direct connection to patient care. City of Hope and TGen share more than a mission. What does a dual appointment mean for a patient? A dual appointment means your physician is both a cancer specialist at City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona and a researcher at TGen, creating a direct connection between groundbreaking discoveries and patient care. This unique model helps bring innovative treatments, precision medicine, and clinical trials to Arizona patients faster, delivering tomorrow’s breakthroughs to patients today. Alan H. Bryce, MD, Chief Clinical Officer, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona and Professor of Molecular Medicine at TGen, is helping bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and clinical practice. He guides care across every City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona location and through his research has been at the forefront of bringing precision medicine to prostate cancer. “Our partnership with TGen allows us to understand each patient’s cancer at an unprecedented level, using genomic sequencing to reveal exactly what’s driving the disease and guide more precise treatment.” – Alan H. Bryce, MD, Chief Clinical Officer, City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona and Professor of Molecular Medicine at TGen
Working alongside Dr. Bryce is Aleksandar Sekulic, MD, PhD, Physician-in-Chief at TGen and Director of Dermatology and Trans lational Research at City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona, where he established the skin cancer program. Dr. Sekulic’s research focuses on applying genomics in patient care, turning gene sequencing from a research tool into something that shapes what a patient is offered. Research takes time. How does philanthropy speed research to treatment? TGen and City of Hope Cancer Center Arizona are powered by philanthropy, accelerating the translation of discovery into patient care. Donors, volunteers and community leaders are at the heart of a nationwide movement to advance cancer research, bring innovative treatments to patients faster, and expand access to personalized care. Their generosity fuels the discoveries, technology and expertise that are transforming the future of cancer care and improving lives across Arizona. SPOTLIGHT: MARY WELLS LAWRENCE
Along came Mary ... the Miracle Worker of Madison Avenue By Liz Manville The intrepid creator of iconic ad campaigns, Mary Wells Lawrence implemented her daring, boundary-pushing approach to redefine advertising in the 1960s and beyond. Bold and theatrical, her commercials were unique and, more importantly, unforgettable. Mary had the Midas touch when it came to developing magical, money-making ads, resulting in dramatic turnarounds for sinking sales.
• Guinness Beer: “Guinness Is Good for You”
Working on Madison Avenue in the 70s and 80s was glamorous and arduous. Original thinking and artistic vision were a must – think Mad Men on uber-creative steroids. By the time I arrived on the scene in the late 70s, New York City was replete with top-tier advertising agencies. Each had its own distinctive reputation that set it apart from the rest. Among the standouts:
• Steinway & Sons: “The Instrument of the Immortals” (still their tagline!)
Della Femina – ads were humorous and controversial client list included: • Panasonic: “From Those Wonderful Folks Who Gave You Pearl Harbor” (Panasonic nixed it, but Jerry Della Femina used it as his book title!). • Meow Mix: “The Singing Cat,” the iconic jingle composed by Tom McFaul was annoying but in a cute way.
• Dove Soap: “One-Quarter Cleansing Cream” • Maxwell House Coffee: “Good to the Last Drop” • Pan American World Airways: “The World’s Most Experienced Airline” Young and Rubicam – known for bold visuals, catchy jingles, and scientific research. Clients included: • Band-Aid: “I Am Stuck On Band-Aids, ’Cause Band-Aid’s Stuck On Me” (jingle by Barry Manilow) • Texaco: “Trust Your Car to the Man Who Wears the Star” (with spokesmen Bob Hope and Jack Benny) • Dr Pepper: “Wouldn’t You Like to Be a Pepper Too?” (featuring David Naughton as the Dr Pepper guy in the flash mob) • 7Up: “The Uncola” (starring dancer/actor Geoffrey Holder) Captivated by the fashion world, I was honored to be hired by the premiere magazine conglomerate, Condé Nast’s in-house ad agency, producing advertising campaigns for top designers- a different facet of the advertising realm. We were all privileged to be part of the extraordinary Advertising Revolution on Madison Avenue in New York City! Then along came Mary. The mastermind of the most successful, creative advertising agency in the world, Mary Wells Lawrence shattered every glass ceiling and became the founding president and CEO of her baby, Wells Rich Greene (WRG). Mary Wells, née Berg, was born in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1928; attended Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, PA; and met and married Bert Wells. She began her ad career as a copywriter at McKelvy’s department store, moved to NYC to study theater and drama, and by 1952 became Macy’s Advertising Manager. By 1954, Mary had divorced and remarried Wells and had two daughters. Mary was
• Isuzu Motors: “He’s Telling the Truth” commercials, featuring the sleazy, pathological, lie-telling car salesman Joe Isuzu, played by actor David Leisure. • Blue Nun Wine: Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara (of the comedy team Stiller and Meara) appeared in radio and TV ads, bantering about dining dilemmas (e.g., the wife wants fish, the husband wants meat) and pitching Blue Nun as the perfect, stress-free white wine that goes with everything. Ogilvy and Mather – known for consumer research, persuasive copy, and clients with household taglines: • American Express: “Do You Know Me?” and “Don’t Leave Home Without It”

hired as a copywriter at McCann Erickson, a basic old-school agency, advancing to Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB), where she spent seven years under the tutelage of her forever mentor, Bill Bernbach. Bill called for advertising to be “honest and candid, smarter, and more interesting- demanding bolder language, humor, wit, and stylish design.” He added, “All of us who professionally use the mass media are the shapers of society. We can vulgarize society or we can lift it to a higher level.” His insights had a tremendous impact on Mary’s success. It was at DDB where she developed her ability to create one-of-a-kind, ingenious TV commercials. Inspired by her theatrical background, Wells captivated audiences with evocative storytelling and striking visuals. From DDB, Wells progressed to Jack Tinker & Partners (Tinkers Thinkers). Despite generating tremendous renown and revenue for the agency with, among others, her brilliant Braniff International campaign, Jack refused to give her the title of president because “the public wouldn’t accept a woman as president.” Ergo, in 1966, Mary resigned with Braniff in tow, and the agency Wells Rich Greene was born! Harding Lawrence, president and CEO of Braniff International, wanted “an idea so big it would fill up his new jets overnight, because an empty seat from Dallas to New York is revenue lost forever.” After assessing Mary’s campaign, “Planes of Many Colors,” he exclaimed, “That will do it” – and it did! Mary orchestrated “The End of the Plain Plane,” rebranding Braniff’s

drab, struggling image into one of the most famously colorful airlines in history, sparking explosive returns. Wells hired renowned fashion designer Emilio Pucci to create kaleidoscopic stewardess outfits that featured peel-away layers, allowing quick changes in mid-air! Celebrated designer Alexander Girard curated the interiors of the planes to perfect the look. In 1967, Mary Wells and Harding Lawrence were married in Paris. Dubbed America’s “Power Couple,” the marriage partnered the titans of aviation and Madison Avenue for 35 years. Harding died of pancreatic cancer in 2002. From its inception, WRG gave more of a rock-and-roll vibe with an edgy energy- not your traditional agency atmosphere. Mary commented, “We all had long hair, peacock clothes, amazing, irreverent offices (the art directors’ offices were filled with talismans like Judy Garland’s red feather fan, Abbie Hoffman handbills, and purple silhouettes of David Bowie). We had New York humor, untrammeled optimism, and we talked hip talk.” It worked! Next came BENSON & HEDGES 100s’ “The Disadvantages“ – the ads poked fun at the disadvantages of a longer cigarette, e.g., catching the end in the elevator door or revolving doors. MIDAS MUFFLERS’ “The Midas Touch” solidified its stellar reputation for quality and lifetime guarantees. ALKASELTZER: WRG ran a series of 16 commercial spots presenting different ways to ingest Alka-Seltzer – a totally innovative approach to drug advertising. “No Matter What Shape Your Stomach’s In” featured peppy music and self-deprecating humor; visuals included two Alka-Seltzer tablets dropping into a crystal glass, creating sparkling bubbles: “Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz – Oh, What a Relief It Is.” By pushing the dosage to two tablets, AlkaSeltzer’s sales doubled overnight! Another

SPOTLIGHT: MARY WELLS LAWRENCE – CONTINUED spot featured husband ‘Ralph’ complaining, “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.” His wife replies, “You ate it, Ralph.” Ralph drinks, and wife asks, “Did you take the Alka-Seltzer?” Ralph beams, “The whole thing.” NATIONAL AIRLINES’ “Fly Me” ads featured alluring, personable stewardesses (e.g., “I’m Margie. Fly me,” “I’m Maggie. Fly me to New York”). The playful double- entendre taglines were famously controversial. BIC LIGHTERS’ “Flick your Bic” introduced the disposable lighter as a must-have, everyday, replaceable item. FORD MOTOR COMPANY’s “At Ford, Quality Is Job 1” ad highlighted engineering reliability, customer satisfaction, and rigorous manufacturing standards. The tagline and veteran worker testimonials (some having worked with Henry Ford) humanized the brand, resulting in generational dedication; the ads ran for two decades. My personal favorite WRG ad campaign of all time is the legendary “I LOVE NEW YORK,” which generated a massive rally to resuscitate the struggling city that we all loved so much. The iconic “I NY” logo was designed by famed graphic designer Milton Glaser. Jingle writer extraordinaire Steve Karmen composed the now-famous “I Love New York” song, which became the state song of New York. Mary purchased time slots across all major network evening news, ensuring total market saturation. Commercials featured celebrities from Broadway to Hollywood and the sports world, singing the jingle and revitalizing local pride. The star-studded ads included Frank Sinatra, Yul Brynner, Morgan Fairchild, Frank Langella (donning his Dracula cape), and the cast of A Chorus Line, to name a few.

Mary Wells Lawrence was the first female CEO and founder of a company listed on the NYSE. Other accolades include the Lion of St. Mark (a lifetime achievement award given at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity); induction into the Advertising Hall of Fame; being

named 1971 Advertising Woman of the Year; becoming the youngest person ever to be inducted into the Copywriters Hall of Fame; and receiving the 2016 Achievement in Avia tion Award for her 1960s work with Braniff International. Before her death in 2024, aged 95, Mary often lamented that modern advertising had forfeited brilliant, creative integrity for the safety of mediocrity. Stifled by number crunchers and cold market data, the Golden Age of Advertising has been degraded to dull, repetitive product pushing. The once bold, magical, risk-taking agencies of Madison Avenue – those iconic niche firms – have been absorbed by corporate consolidation. Mary’s legacy survives by the memorable jingles and ingenious images etched in our consumer brains forever! RIP, WRG.

My favorite Mary Wells Lawrence quote: “When copywriting, be a detective and a psychiatrist before allowing yourself to be an artist.”
PROFILE: CARRY ON
Don’t Miss this Golden Era of Flying By Bill Dougherty If you were lucky enough to grow up flying first class on Pan Am in the 1960s and 70s, as I was, then consider yourself very fortunate. Anyway, Carry On, a themed cocktail bar located in downtown Phoenix, is an absolute must for those craving the bygone era of opulent travel. The night we were finally able to get reservations, the flight schedule for the evening was NYC to Tokyo. The space resembled that of a groovy cocktail lounge from a Boeing 707 or the upper deck of a 747. Just a bit larger. Passengers are presented with tickets, boarding passes, seat assignments and first-class dinner menus. Stewardesses adorned in minidresses and boots give the passengers a safety demo before the plane’s simulated and loud take off for the Far East. Cocktails and warm mixed nuts are served almost immediately. They were exceptional! Each passenger is given three complimentary drink coupons. The “Here & There” menu is a sampling of two hors d’oeuvres. They were impressive. The main course offered Japanese Wagyu beef with plenty of sides. Again, exceptional. The flight concluded with cheesecake. That too was sensational. If you missed the golden era of flying, don’t miss Carry On. It’s a brilliant offering of a time in America when airline service truly mattered. It’s a lot of fun and an excellent experience!

TRENDS IN DINING: THE ENDS
The Beginning of The Ends By Bob Stearnes, Epicurean
Saturday night at the home where I grew up was my favorite night of the week for dinner. We had leftover portions from each meal that we’d eaten earlier that week. It generally consisted of anything Southern (my parents), Polish (our next-door neighbors), Mexican (our other next-door neighbors), and German (our neighbors across the street). You get the picture – it was cuisine from around the world that was enjoyed by sharing, telling stories of their origin and, best yet, laughter and shared experience. I’ve long said that our travels around the world are most clearly remembered by food we have discovered and the friends that we have made in the process. Now, imagine a restaurant right in the heart of Scottsdale that embodies all things discovered, enjoyed, and made with the freshest ingredients – ones that your body actually recognizes as something good for it. Not genetically modified, farm-to-table, and with no seed oils, only tallow.
60
THIS IS THE ENDS. The brainchild of owner Tommy Plato, The Ends is a unique addition to the Scottsdale food scene. Their motto is, “The human body is made of energy. What we eat either feeds it or steals from it.” All ingredients are organic and pull from travels around the world. Multiple homages to Anthony Bourdain decorate the walls. The attentive and knowledgeable staff fit right into the vibe of the restaurant.
The vibe of The Ends is like something I’ve never experienced. It has an almost communal feel to it, like a bunch of friends that you’ve met around the world just happened into this place and began sharing plates and stories. The Ends literally stands for “The Energy Never Dies,” and in this place, it really doesn’t. Anthony would be proud. The Ends 7137 E. We began with exquisite dirty martinis with bleu cheese olives. Appetizers of buttery Hamachi crudo with house-made wasabi were followed by a unique offering of crispy egg yolk nigiri nestled in gochujang aioli, furikake, and crispy ginger. Don’t miss this one. A crispy, refreshing arugula and poached pear salad was next; the arugula and watercress with goat cheese and candied walnuts in a tangy champagne vinaigrette was simply divine. Entrees were a sinfully rich short rib agnolotti and a red snapper in a lemony beurre blanc with charred lemon and briny pops of trout roe. An enormous Dirty Veal chop in a spicy vodka sauce was just decadent. Crispy and inviting. So little room left, but we had to indulge in the rustic tiramisu. Best decision of the evening.
