REMEMBERING ...

Carolyn Bosworth

My wife and I were hosting a party for the Junior League at our home when I head of the passing of one of its finest presidents, Carolyn Bosworth. The iconic community leader and socialite had faced a long brave battle with cancer.

Originally, I only knew Carolyn Bosworth just to say hello. I knew she was one of the three very beautiful and rarified Taylor sisters. All three had made great strides in the philanthropic and fundraising community. But one cold morning at the Camelback Village Health Club, she and one of her two daughters jumped into the swim lanes next to me. A swimmer since the late 1960s, I marveled at her technique. It was like watching a swan glide through the water. The pair returned again and again to swim in the early morning alongside me. One morning Carolyn arrived alone, and we started talking. It was then she told me following her college graduation she had been a flight attendant for Pan American World Airways. Since my late father had done a great deal of work for the airline, our connection became immediate. One time we had coffee in the clubhouse after our respective swims. Carolyn talked about the first-class meal service on the 707, something I remember very well. Since Maxims de Paris did the carriers catering, dinner service averaged around two and a half hours from start to finish. It was amazing. I learned that during the Vietnam War Carolyn had also been chosen by Pan Am to fly countless baby lift flights out of Southeast Asia.

Carolyn Bosworth was the gold standard in the philanthropic world, this started in high school and college with various leadership positions. She founded Arcadia Pride as well as Arcadia Park. She would eventually become President of the Junior League of Phoenix. She was an Elder at Valley Presbyterian, where she created a children’s Easter program. Also, a long-standing member of The Board of Visitors, Carolyn chaired and participated in the state’s oldest charity to a tireless degree. In 1998, Valley Leadership named her Woman of the Year, an honor that had also been bestowed on her mother several years prior. Carolyn Bosworth was the epitome of quiet elegance. Her belief in making the community and state a far better place for so many, was done with great humor and little attention to herself. Carolyn did not crave the spotlight, but rather made it a far more brilliant light. She never called any attention to herself. All she needed was her confidence, dynamite smile and her quiet ability to make things happen. Carolyn Bosworth will be missed by so many. She was simply incredible.

REMEMBERING ... Del Lewis

When I first heard of the passing of Del Lewis, I thought to myself, the Valley has finally run out of true empire builders. Del was a man who helped to shape our political climate as well as our communications platform, when many in the United States didn’t even know where Phoenix was.

Del Lewis and his family moved to Phoenix in the early 1920s but found the summers unbearable and left. They returned later during the Great Depression, like the majority of Americans in search of work. His father found a job in Florence and taught Del the farming business. By the time World War II broke out, Del was a high school graduate and quickly enlisted in the military. He would eventually find his way to the Pacific, where he would defend his country against the Japanese. After the war, he would play an instrumental role in the rebuilding of streets, ditches, and waterways the allied forces had destroyed.

Following the war, Del attended the University of Arizona where he met his first wife Jewell McFarland. The two graduated and moved to Washington DC where Jewell went on to get a master’s degree. Jewel’s father, who at the time was Senator Ernest McFarland, enticed the two to return to Phoenix. The senator was so impressed with Del that he installed him in the family farming business. He brilliantly ran the farm for several years. By the mid 1950’s, the senator also used his connections to move from radio into television. He quickly purchased the rights to an unused station and created KTVK channel 3 and affiliated it with ABC. He installed Del yet again and the station shot to the number one position for more than 70 years. Del introduced many local programs to fill airspace and made a lot of people famous. They included: country singer Marty Robbins and entertainers Wayne Newton and Lynda Carter, who were all Valley natives. Del Lewis truly created “Arizona’s Family.” He would go on to acquire more radio stations and even Phoenix Magazine before the Lewis family sold everything in 1999.

Del Lewis was a bold philanthropist. His good nature and soft-spoken voice opened many doors for his wife and him. Although Jewell Lewis passed away in 2003, the couple had made their mark in everything from healthcare, education, animal welfare and most notable a drive to save the Orpheum Theatre. Del would eventually marry again and he and his second wife Sharron would go on to support even more charitable and philanthropic organizations. They would include the Heard Museum, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Phoenix Heart Ball, Ballet Arizona and on and on. Del Lewis was a decorated veteran, a successful farmer, and a tremendous businessman. Everything he touched he turned to gold. He made an indelible mark on Phoenix and the state of Arizona. He will be missed.

REMEMBERING ... Beverly Stewart

Thelma

With a heart as kind as her sweet face, Thelma is truly a special girl who deserves a special home full of love and light. After nine months of care through the Arizona Humane Society, the seven-yearyoung Australian Kelpie mix can’t wait to find her true forever home and show how much love she has to give.

When I received a phone call from out Fashion Director Margert Merrett that Beverly Stewart had died, I was shocked and deeply saddened. Trends had taken this beautiful photo of her at the Fresh Start Gala last spring, and she looked magnificent.

Beverly Stewart was a native Arizonian. Together with her sister Pat Petznick Wick, they had grown up together in the family’s cattle business. They were inseparable. This is perhaps common knowledge to anyone who knew the beautiful sisters. But what many didn’t know is that prior to her countless philanthropic endeavors, Beverly was a gifted athlete. She excelled in soft ball, which earned her a scholarship to ASU in Physical Education. She would also go on to earn a master’s degree. Beverly taught Physical Education at various Valley schools and eventually became the first girl’s athletic director for Phoenix Union High School District. She continued to play soft ball for 18 teams including the world famous PBSW Ramblers. In 1965 she founded the Sun City Saints. She was also an extremely accomplished golfer.

Together with her sister Pat, Beverly became a partner at Rolph’s, an upscale hair salon in central Phoenix. There the two dynamic ladies would start makeovers on displaced women. The program helped to rehabilitate ladies and give them the confidence to re-enter society and the workplace as well. Their program became so successful that the two decided to branch out. In 2002 the sisters founded Fresh Star Women’s Foundation. Their slogan was simple, “helping women help themselves.” Today the Foundation serves more than 4,000 women yearly, through various programs at their impressive Central Phoenix campus. Beverly was also a huge supporter of the Barrow Neurological Institution and countless other organizations. She never said no. In recent years her health began to decline. You would have never known it. Beverly’s dedication to making the community a better place continued. Her wit and constant smile were to be admired by all. Even in the face of poor health, Beverly persevered and changed the lives of many. She was a beautiful beacon of light in the harshest of storms. She led a long and truly amazing life. Beverly Stewart will be greatly missed by those fortunate enough to have known such a beautiful lady inside and out

Thelma is an incredibly kind soul that was found as a sick, injured stray on the San Carlos Reservation in February of this year. Thanks to Banfield Foundation, AHS has hosted a number of mobile veterinary clinics in this community to help provide accessible veterinary care to pets in need, including Thelma. A quick assessment determined she was in need of additional care.

Upon arrival to AHS, it was clear to trauma hospital staff that her bulging eyes were non-seeing but very painful and she was in need of a surgery. Although she has adjusted incredibly well with heightened sound and smell skills, Thelma would love time to adjust in her new home so she can learn the route and where everything is – with help of treats, of course! Safety protocols in her new home would ensure there are baby gates for stairs and a fenced in pool if there is one.

To help her find her forever home, Thelma’s adoption fee is waived. Additionally, Thelma is staying in her Foster Hero home until she finds her forever home, those interested in setting up a meet-and-greet are encouraged to call 602-997-7585 ext. 1145 or visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.

Tiramisu

Abandoned in the parking lot of the Arizona Humane Society’s South Mountain Campus in late August, Tiramisu is not only a reminder of the many cases the shelter faces each day but also that no pet should ever be abandoned. Although an increase in abandonments is directly tied to the community facing additional hardships, no pets should ever be put in harm’s way when looking to rehome them.

At four-years-old, the beautiful domestic shorthair was understandably very scared but luckily healthy overall once evaluated in AHS’ trauma hospital. Tiramisu is a bit more timid upon initial meeting but has proven to be a friendly girl who just needs a bit of time to adjust.

Meet Tiramisu at AHS’ South Mountain location off 15th Ave. and Dobbins Rd. in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $50, visit azhumane.org/adopt for more information.

2018 Fabulous Phoenician SUE GLAWE

You knew where you stood the moment you met Sue Glawe. She was not one to suffer fools gladly. But under her stern exterior lay one of the most beautiful and gifted stewards of our community imaginable. She passed away late last summer after leading one of the most incredible lives imaginable.

In January of 1994 I was introduced to Sue at a cocktail reception. I had just joined the staff of Trends as a reporter. I knew all about the dynamic lady with the lovely smile. But like many others I was intimidated by her presence. By this time Sue was simply iconic. She had already achieved great success in the Arizona State legislature starting in 1962. Then she went on to completely reformulate the Arizona Chamber of Commerce. Finally, Sue landed at Blue Cross Blue Sheild. From this point on she would continue to work her magic, just as she had in previous occupations. She would quickly rise through the ranks of the medical organization and end up as Vice President of

Community Relations. Sue seldom if ever said no. And if she did, she would find a solution rather than turn the interested party away.

Her mentoring of individuals in the medical, corporate, and philanthropic fields was that of legend. She always had time to give sound advice. Her wisdom, smile and matter of fact attitude made her a true superstar in so many avenues of our community and state. Sue wanted to make sure that once she had retired, the individuals that would continue her brilliance would have the skills and training to lead by example.

In 2016 I asked Sue to be a Trendsetter. Unfortunately, her hectic schedule prevented her from accepting the honor. I even told her it was the oldest award in the state that honored women. This caught her attention. She could not believe there was not a philanthropic award prior to 1982 when the very first “Fashionalities” were presented to the community. A year later with the help of my lovely mother-in-law Betty McRae, we convinced Sue to be the Fabulous Phoenician for 2018. In her speech at our annual gala, she spoke of giving back, philanthropy and her two sons, whom she adored. She never spoke of herself. She was simply an amazing lady.

Many in the community were well-versed in her motto – Wake up in the morning and do something good. Sue did this every day. She will be greatly missed, but her lasting legacy will continue for decades.

LA DOLCE VITA The Season

Welcome Back! From all of us at Trends Magazine and the Trends Charitable Fund, we hope you had a safe and pleasant summer. This season I start my 30th year with Trends. Although I didn’t join the staff of Trends as a reporter until January of 1994, I was assigned the Phoenix Heart Ball in the fall of 1993 and it was dazzling. A lot has changed since then. The old guard is totally gone, including Thelma Kieckhefer, Ann Graham, Pat Goldman, Virgina Piper, Mary Blankenship and so many others. This group wasn’t afraid to take risks and they were complete characters. Most had gray hair and whirled around the dance floor in chiffon gowns. Cosmetic surgery was not an option or ever talked about. I remember spending a lot of time with Pat Goldman toward the end of her life and she was the last to go. It bothered her tremendously that the new guard constantly talked about money, designer fashions and announced numbers with drum rolls from the stage of galas and balls. She said it didn’t matter how much was raised, just that we had fun doing it and in the end the world was a better place. I blame the media for this today. I wish things were different.

Just as we going to print, we learned of the deaths of three iconic Valley leaders. Eric Bron, the internationally honored interior designer

and vastly awarded architect passed away. We also lost 2006 Fashionality Oonagh Boppart and her husband John. The Bopparts had been photo graphed for a Trends issue at a gala last spring. These three people did such fine things to make our community better and more beautiful. They will all be missed.

You should also know that The Phoenix Heart

Ball Honorary Chairmen

Carolyn and Craig Jackson had to miss our recent photo session, due to their New Orleans auction preparations. But we have big plans for the dynamic duo in the November issue. Stay tuned there’s always more ...

IN COCKTAIL POLO NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT ...

ACI Holiday Luncheon

What inspired you two to chair this event together?

First of all, we love fashion! Second, we absolutely love Phoenix Art Museum and have a long history with this fine crown jewel of Phoenix. Third, we co-chaired the Trends Gala in 2021 and had an absolute blast working together. We have different, but synergistic strengths.

Who is this year’s featured fashion designer/speaker?

We can’t believe our good fortune to have renowned designer Jonathan Simkhai, of eponymous brand SIMKHAI, flying in to present his latest collection and fascinating background for our stylish attendees.

How did he get his start?

Jonathan’s love affair with fashion began at the early age of 14when he was offered the unique opportunity to work as an assistant buyer for a local boutique. He was quickly promoted to buyer and merchandiser for the boutique and went on to study at Parsons and the Fashion Institute of Technology, honing his skills as a designer and working for his family’s fashion manufacturing company. He launched his first collection in 2010, presenting histake on sophisticated dressing for the modern, cosmopolitan woman.

Where can ladies shop for his fashions locally?

If you haven’t been to WUNDERKIND yet, you are in for a treat. Owner Philip Manghisi and his team will assist you in shopping for SIMKHAI fashions at their chic boutique, located at 7293 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale 85253.

For more info, call 480.386.6591 or visit shopwunderkind.com. Philip/WUNDERKIND is the presenting sponsor for the 2023 ACI Holiday Luncheon on Dec. 4 and Philip is personal friends with Jonathan. He and Lisa Portigal helped make this happen!

What about the men?

Due to popular demand, SIMKHAI is launching its menswear collection this fall. For updates (men and women) visit simkhai.com and sign up for their newsletter.

Anything else we should know?

The ACI Holiday Luncheon always sells out! Tickets start at $350 and ticket holders at the $1,000 level and ACI members will be invited to a champagne reception with Jonathan Simkhai at 10am on Dec. 4, prior to the start of the lunch reception. High-level donors will be treated to a private dinner with him at Steak 44 the night prior. Thank you Mastro Family and Jennifer Moser for this incredible donation.

ACI Holiday Luncheon Details: 10:30am, Monday, Dec. 4, at Phoenix Art Museum. Information: arizonacostumeinstitue.org.

6th Annual Vino con Stelle

What is Vino con Stelle?

Now in its sixth year, Vino con Stelle is one of the signature fundraising events for Gateway for Cancer Research. This intimate black-tie affair centers on an exclusive tasting of some of the world’s most exquisite wines matched with expertly planned and prepared dishes. To ensure a lavish experience that ignites all the senses, the evening’s program includes performances from some of the industry’s most celebrated entertainers along with the opportunity for guests to meet and mingle with some of the Valley’s most beloved faces and philanthropic figures.

Who hosts Vino con Stelle?

Vino con Stelle is underwritten by Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson and Richard J Stephenson, Gateway’s vice chair and chairman, respectively. They graciously cover all event expenses as a show of their appreciation for those who choose to invest in Gateway’s mission through sponsorship, ticket purchases and donations. With 100% of all contributions directly supporting early phase cancer clinical trials, guests and supporters know their funds make the biggest possible impact.

What do proceeds from the event support?

All proceeds from Vino con Stelle directly support Gateway’s mission of advancing practice-changing discoveries in cancer care. Gateway is the only nonprofit of its kind to exclusively fund Phase I and Phase II clinical trials for all types of cancer at hospitals around the world. These trials, which often mark the first-in-human study of novel cancer treatments and therapies, offer hope and healing to men, women and children everywhere.

Why should I support Gateway?

Cancer research carries risk, but the reward of discovering lifechanging treatments and therapies makes it a journey worth taking. Early phase clinical trials mark a vital step in bringing bioscience

and laboratory findings to the patients who need them most. Unfortunately, funding for this vital step is scarce, underscoring the need for organizations like Gateway.

Who typically attends Vino con Stelle?

As with all of Gateway’s black-tie galas, Vino con Stelle brings a varietal mix of philanthropists, professional athletes, actors, musicians and more. Among those who have frequented the event in years past are Valley favorites like Larry Fitzgerald and Tara Hitchcock, television stars like Brooke Burke and Matt Iseman, and cancer research phenoms like Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “The Emperor of All Maladies: ABiography of Cancer.” With an ever-changing and always energetic guest list, it’s a prime place see and be seen.

Who and what can guests expect there?

The sixth annual Vino con Stelle will be emceed by actress and comedian Caroline Rhea, whose perfectly timed humor and compelling personal cancer testimony ensure an evening that’s equal parts comedic and compelling. Guests will enjoy a cocktail reception that features a perfectly paired food and wine tasting before embarking on a three-course dinner guided by celebrity Sommelier Anthony Giglio. To round out the affair, they’ll enjoy and impressive live auction before experiencing a uniquely paired entertainment lineup fitting for an evening of wine under the stars. Where can I get tickets?

To inquire about sponsorship opportunities or to purchase tickets, visit GatewayCR.org/Vino. For questions, please email vino@gatewaycr.org.

Beauty of the Materials in Jewelry Art

What is your background, how did you begin designing and making unique jewelry?

I began my work as an interior designer doing residential and commercial design. After about 10 years I began my career as a sculptor creating mixed media art, which was an exciting creative period in my life. About 15 years ago I decided to take my artistic abilities in another direction. I learned to fabricate jewelry so that I could create individual pieces which were both beautiful, as well as pieces of art my clients could wear.

Why did your jewelry evolve to its present state?

I have always had a great admiration for antiques and precious artistic pieces particularly from the Victorian era. This led me to collecting pieces during my travels around the world. My jewelry designs became a way to combine the beauty of these older pieces with more modern design creating a unique jewelry genre.

What do you try to accomplish with your jewelry art?

I try to create pieces that not only definethe beauty of the materials contained in each piece, but also definethe individual clients who wear myjewelryart.

What keeps you going to continue to create individual pieces rather mass producing many copies of each piece? I love interacting with the women and men who are my clients. It is a tool that keeps inspiring me to create.

How do you continue to come up with new designs that excite your clients?

The design ideas come to me as I obtain new and beautiful materials to create the jewelry. The ideas for the jewelry creation are a gift that allows me to bring pleasure and joy to the wonderful women that wear these pieces.

Have you ever thought about commercializing your jewelry and putting it is stores so more people could enjoy it.

I have considered it, but I enjoy the social aspect of dealing individually with the clients who buy and wear my jewelry.

How do you continue to find the materials to sustain your jewelry art. Fortunately, I have developed a network of sources that are still continually finding antiques and artifacts I can integrate into my jewelry. I enjoy travelling which constantly identifies new sources.

What is next in your jewelry art? Every day is one of discovery and wonder. As I find new materials and develop new themes my pieces continue to evolve and my clients seem to love these pieces more and more. This gives me personal joy.

Bonnie will have a private trunk show with her newest collection on Nov. 1, 2 and 3, from 9am to 5pm. To schedule an appointment, email Bonnie at bonnieradow@cox.net. Her website is www.bonnieradowdesigns.com.

MOTHER

Mom is an amazing philanthropist and inspires others to do the same.

MOTHER

Mom is a wonderful, compassionate woman who inspires other women and is generous to others.

Laurie, my partner for the past 45 years, is an extraordinary woman who has filled my life with immeasurable joy and love. Her boundless giving, nurturing nature and genuine care have made her a beacon of light in my world and many others. Her unwavering support and affection have been a source of strength and comfort, guiding me through life’s ups and downs. I am grateful daily for her presence in my life, and I can confidently say that she embodies all the qualities of love, care, and selflessness that any person could ever hope for.

My mother’s kindness is genuinely selfless, free of any ulterior motives. Another remarkable trait of hers is her ability to treat everything with utmost importance and urgency. She never procrastinates. She is always there when people are in need, capable of accomplishing any task regardless of its difficulty. During the Covid-19 pandemic, she had ten Instant Pots running simultaneously, cooking meals for vulnerable friends and delivering them with a smile. Throughout her career, she worked tirelessly, putting in hours that would make many ambitious professionals blanch while still finding time for numerous philanthropic activities to aid the less fortunate. My mom is also passionate about advocating for those with mental illnesses who are unable to speak up for themselves. She has inspired me to be philanthropic, and both of my parents have taught me to treat all my patients with the utmost respect as if they were CEOs of companies.

Whether you are looking for a traditional or contemporary style of entertaining, the iconic Dolce & Gabbana leopard print will add an eye-catching aesthetic to any table. Susan believes in layering in items from your home to add a personal touch to your table. With that goal in mind, Susan’s finished the table with pieces from Jan Barboglio and Jonathan Adler to add warmth to the overall setting. Looking for a bit of inspiration to design your table this fall? Susan will work with you to create a welcoming table setting for any occasion. Her hidden talent is finding the perfect elements to add to your existing collection that will make a statement your guests will always remember. Humane Society’s Compassion with Fashion

Tell us a little bit about the Arizona Humane Society’s Compassion with Fashion event and what makes it unique.

Compassion with Fashion started when a group of like-minded individuals came together to work toward the shared vision of ending needless shelter animal euthanasia. Since its inception, the event has raised over 14 million dollars and funds numerous Arizona Humane Society innovative programs. While the event is energetic, entertaining and deeply moving, what makes it unique are the attendees as it brings together several generations of supporters and donors to positively impact an organization we are all passionate and dedicated to.

2023 marks the 25th anniversary of Compassion with Fashion. Will there be anything special about this year’s event? This year’s event will celebrate the legacy of CWF by honoring all the past chairs since its founding.

How did you get involved with the Arizona Humane Society?

It was when Dr. Steven Hansen became CEO, and we had the opportunity to hear him speak about his vision for a truly incredible and unique future for the organization. These new programs addressed the causes of animal homelessness, animal cruelty and euthanasia and created solutions rather than band-aids for these issues.

Why is the mission of the Arizona Humane Society important to you?

We have a deep passion for the innovative programs of AHS – pets finding their forever homes, helping people struggling to keep their pets during hard personal times, a dynamic spay and neuter program and the organization’s ability to assist with animal cruelty cases. What do you look forward to the most at the Compassion with Fashion event?

Obviously, the Parade of Paws, where all the puppies available for adoption at the event walk the runway!

Do you have a favorite pet story from this year or previous year’s that encapsulates the spirit of the Compassion with Fashion event?

One story stands out…it was our friend’s first time coming to Compassion with Fashion, and, as a lifelong lover and owner of Pugs, she immediately fell in love with a blind Pug in that years’ Parade of Paws. She was smitten and bought many raffle tickets in the hopes of taking him home that day. It worked and she and the sweet Pug, now named Stevie, went home with her to join her pack of two other Pugs. Stevie’s taught himself where everything is and loves his new home. Couldn’t have been more perfect!

Princess of Pets: Ann Siner

Tell us a little bit about your background before My Sister’s Closet?

Well I was 12 years old so I don’t remember much. Just kidding. I was Director of Marketing for Petfood Warehouse (that later became Petsmart). What a great job and opportunity!

How did you decide to get into resale and when did you start your business.

On a business trip to Texas I went into a nice resale/consignment store and the wheels started turning. I came home to see if there was anything similar and found very unappealing stores. The year was 1991 when we finally opened our first store in Phoenix. This was the same year Neiman Marcus opened in Scottsdale and the first website was developed. Sustainability was not even a conceptin1991.

Where was your first location in the Valley?

20th Street and Camelback/Town & Country for 30 years. We have since moved that store to the prestigious Biltmore Fashion Park.

Do you have locations in other states?

Yes, we have My Sister’s Closet and My Sister’s Attic in Encinitas, CA.

What concepts have worked in your business and what have not?

We tried a store for used bridal and formal gowns and it was not popular at all! But over the decades we learned that customers love more than just women’s clothing bargains, men also love a bargain and everyone loves furniture and furnishings at a low price so we opened My Sister’s Attic (4 locations) and Well Suited (2locations).

How did you become interested in the Arizona Humane Society?

I served on other animal rescue boards years ago and then realized AHS takes in more homeless pets than any other group except MCACC. I decided it was time to really make a difference and join those that whose mission is to make a big change in ourcommunity.

What have you done with the organization since you arrived there?

Served on the Board for 14 years; Chaired Compassion with Fashion in 2018 and again in 2019 both times setting new records

for fundraising; Member of the Capital Campaign Committee to raise $28million for the new AHS facility; Have given over $200,000 to spay/neuter initiatives; Contributed $1million to the new AHS facility; Our stores have given literally millions of dollars in donations to the AHS Thrift stores; and I’ve fostered some beautiful puppies and kittens.

Tell us about any plans you might have with the Arizona Humane Society in the future?

I will continue to support AHS in any way I can. I recently funded free microchips for pet owners that took advantage of this spring’s free vaccination clinics hosted by AHS. And I will always be an advocate for spay/neuter.

A Sommeliers’ Dream

Who would have thought you can find a winery/tasting room in Scottsdale Air Park? Walking into Desert Rock Winery you get the feeling that you are in a winery in Sonoma, CA. It doesn’t feel like any place in Scottsdale. There is a bar, and the chairs and tables are all wine barrels. The decor shows pictures of owners Paul and Shannon Hoffman in their element with their trademark ‘Headbanger’ paraphernalia throughout. The bar is always full, not overly crowded with people both tasting the wines and taking tours of production. The crowd of people at the bar are all welcoming and between them, the owners, and staff you feel comfortable immediately. You want to call this your own private ‘cheers’.

After a career in the hospitality industry where Paul had his start as a Tom Cruise ‘Cocktail’ wannabe slinging fruity drinks in the Caribbean, Hoffman leveraged thirty years of work in the wine and spirits industries. Those years included increasing senior roles at the Robert Mondavi corporation in Sonoma. He created his own brands: Headbanger and Hoffman Wines and Spirits. Then he established his headquarters in the Scottsdale Air Park.

His concept in Scottsdale was different from any other place. He created a space where you can buy wine and spirits, act as a distribution site plus taste and see the production. DRW has recently been picked up by a statewide distributor so you can find their products in many locations from liquor stores to restaurants throughout Arizona. They buy grapes from 19 vineyards in CA and bottle 24 different varieties. All their spirits are straight on, or with their own special twist on a trend. Their featured cocktails are now being sold in cans, perfect for sipping while lounging at the pool. DRW is also being franchised throughout the country. The end goal for Hoffman is national distribution while never losing the community he has built.

From creation to bottling, marketing and especially hanging out with his loyal guests; you can see the love Paul has for the entire business

from the glow on his face while talking about it. He has created a family from his staff to the prop who feel like they’ve come home when walking through the front door. It’s an experience not to be missed. A jewel.

Go in for a tour and see his entire process of wine making or sit and listen to one of the live bands on the weekends. They offer charcuterie boards and food trucks along with their wine memberships. Paul and Shannon are animal lovers and dog friendly. So much so, they support local animal rescues by hosting adoptions at the winery and having events designating a portion of their proceeds to animal rescues. Not only great wine and spirits, but wonderful hosts and humanitarians.

What is PACC911?

PACC911, Phoenix Animal Care Coalition, is an umbrella animal welfare organization with nearly 140 rescue and animal assistance groups working together for the benefit of animals.

Rescue groups must be a registered 501c3 in good standing to apply to become a PACC911 partner. They are selected based on their missions, integrity and willingness to operate by our code of ethics. They are all provided our Best Practices manual for guidance, and rescue standards. You can easily find all our rescue partners at PACC911.org along with fast links to their websites to see their many adoptable pets, ready for forever homes.

What does PACC911 do?

PACC911 assists our animal rescue partners in the following ways:

1.Large Adoption events around the valley provide our rescue partners a variety of venues to adopt their animals in a friendly and happy environment. Rescues get great exposure and adopters see the animals in a relaxed and pleasant setting where their true personalities can shine. Over 11,000 pets have been adopted thru PACC911 events to date.

2. Fundraising and our Critical Care Program: PACC911 raises funds to help rescue partners defray overwhelming medical costs when saving the lives of those animals who have medical needs due to serious illness, neglect, injuries and sometimes cruelty. PACC911’s assistance allows each rescue to save many more animals from shelters, or those abandoned on the streets or deserts. Since the inception of the Critical Care program in 2012, we have dispensed over 3 million dollars to our partners saving upwards of 7000 animals, giving them that second chance at life. Fundraisers, grants, donations and, our thrift boutique, Rescued Treasures, located at 3841 E. Thunderbird Rd, Phoenix all contribute to this program.

3. Food Bank: Our Chuck Waggin Pet Food Pantry helps low-income families keep their animals rather than being relinquished to Arizona’s already overwhelmed shelters by providing pet food to them on a regular basis. Chuck Waggin is the only pet food Pantry who provides delivery and we are always in need of delivery drivers!

4.Education: PACC911 partners adopt out only spayed and neutered animals and we stress the need to spay and neuter all animals to the public, to stop the tragic cycle of unwanted pets. This is the only sure way to help minimize the euthanization of the many animals now at local shelters.

How did you decide to start this organization?

In 1999 there was no rescue community. The small rescues that existed did not work in tandem and in fact, competed for media and dollars. There was no harmony. The large shelters (MCACC, AZ Humane Society, AAWL) also did not acknowledge the small rescues, overlooking a great potential resource. At that time euthanasia’s were sky high (over 60,000 annually being euthanized by county and AHS). Change was needed and I decided to give it a try by uniting all the small rescues and inviting the large shelters to work with us. I had no expectation of what PACC911 would someday become.

What sets you apart from the Arizona Humane Society?

This would be a comparison of apples and oranges! There is a difference between “sheltering” which is what the Arizona Humane Society does, and “rescuing” which is what we do. But one often compliments the other. Those animals taken in by the Arizona Humane Society are sheltered. If the pet is adoptable , they adopt those out. If the animal needs serious veterinary care, those animals are offered to rescues (often PACC911 partners) who then bear the burden of getting the

animal the needed medical care, with the help of our Critical Care Program. So, we RESCUE from the Arizona Humane Society. “Shelter” medicine offered in large shelters differs from “private practice” veterinary care. Our rescues use private practice vets and can get specialized vet care that large shelters cannot provide. We fully invest in the animals we save and we have a good relationship with AHS. Together, we try to save all those we can.

Do you partner with other animal organizations in the valley?

Our entire mission is working together. So,YES. Our PACC911 partners work closely with Maricopa Animal Care and Control as well with the Arizona Humane and Animal Welfare league. (AAWL) PACC911 is in touch with MCACC and AHS daily as our partners pull animals who are medical cases or behavior cases that they are unable to care for. It is our rescues, with help from the Critical Care Program who save the most vulnerable from the shelters.

Do you have a fundraiser for the organization?

Our annual signature gala is Glimmer of Hope, a luncheon, silent and live auction with a much loved, heartwarming program showcasing how donations have been put to use saving animals. This year Glimmer Hope will be held at theCamelback Inn on Nov 12, 2023 from 11 am to 2 pm.

We also have a fun and fabulous spring event called Beauty to the Rescue hosted by Mane Attraction Salon on Camelback in Phoenix. Both events raise funds for the Critical Care Program.

TRENDS MAGAZINE TRENDS CHARITABLE FUND COCKTAIL PARTY

Every spring Trends Magazine and the Trends Charitable Fund stop to thank the magazine’s cherished advertisers. This is done in conjunction with all past Fabulous Phoenicians, Fashionalities, and Trendsetters. This year more than 275 people attended the party, held poolside at the publisher’s home in Paradise Valley. After Dark Valet did a magnificent

job parking more than 150 cars and with very little wait time at all. Robert’s Catering blew out all the stops with an opulent buffet fit for royalty. Everyone was introduced to the 10 new Trendsetters for 2023 with all but one in attendance. The weather was perfect, and cocktails and champagne flowed until dawn early light. You should have been there!

2023 DINNER ON THE DESERT

Desert Botanical Garden’s 2023 Dinner on the Desert held at the Garden on April 22 brought more than 630 Garden enthusiasts together to raise more than $500,000 for the Garden’s critical work for desert plant conservation. The event was co-chaired by Shoshana Tancer of Phoenix and Faye Kitchel of Scottsdale who personally curated an evening full of wonder and beauty that included a silent auction that raised $98,000, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, music and dance along Garden trails and dining under the stars by Fabulous Food Fine Catering & Events.

“Dinner on the Desert was fantastic this year. Thanks to the wonderful work by my co-chair Faye and the stupendous Garden staff. We hope all guests enjoyed it and if you haven’t experienced Dinner on the Desert before, please save April 20, 2024 for the next event,” says Shoshana Tancer, event co-chair. The proceeds from the event will help support the Garden as a premier destination in desert plant conservation and its mission to advance excellence in education, research and exhibition of desert plants.

Hidden Pearl

Award-winning Valley writer Judy Laufer is widely known for her extensive collection of children’s books as well as young adult books. In one of her newest offerings, she explores the perils of young Pearl Brachfeld. It is 1939 and Adolph Hitler has just invaded Poland. Suddenly, like so many, the young Miss Brachfeld’s world is turned upside down. Her family is ripped apart and many relations simply disappear never to be seen again.

This a tale told over and over again about the Holocaust, but rather than tell the story of the horrific things the girl and her family face, the author finds positive reinforcement in the form of resilience, courage and hope.

Although there are many sad turns of events in this book, it ends with triumph and stronger characters that go on to shape the world. Ms. Laufer has once again done an extraordinary job tackling perhaps the darkest and most horrifying times in history. Her approach to the subject gives readers the understanding that even in the worst of times good and beauty persevere.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in the history of World War II and the lives of so many that were swept into it.

A Meal That is More of a Memory Than a Dish

I once spent a month on a culinary journey, bouncing along the Mediterranean coast in Spain, France, and Italy going from cafes and restaurants to street vendors sampling some of the freshest seafood, pastas, and local specialties. The smells and tastes still bring these gastronomic dreams to life as I look back on the lifestyles, the pride, and the outright joy the cultures had to give. Open, airy restaurants with their lively staff, laughter and the satisfied smiles of the patrons sampling the best of what each restaurant had to offer. Like awakening from a dream I found myself in the unmistakingly very real experience of my memories, I was in Cala, not a flight away, but a short drive away in beautiful Scottsdale.

Cala is the vision of legendary Chef Beau Macmillan and Executive Chef Peter McQuaid.

Cala embraces fresh ingredients, hand tossed pizzas, the freshest seafood and handmade pasta. A friendly and attentive staff tends to every need and dietary restriction. The wine list is extensive and the craft cocktails are unique not only in their taste but in their attention to detail. Open and airy, boho chic both calming and eclectic at once. Extensive macrame’ and artwork is prevalent. Cala lends itself to a restaurant you would find walking along the coast and the aromas and vibe pulls you off the beach to sample the exquisite tastes and experiences that lie within.

We started our journey with a trip to Greece, flaming saganaki, fried Kasseri cheese nestled along Kalamata olives and homemade lemon focaccia flamed with Greek brandy.

Absolutely decadent. Our second was an homage to Spain featuring a buttery soft Ahi tuna tartare with chilled cantaloupe and the most divine aji amarillo sauce with pickled jalapenos and a garlic crunch. A delightful taste with a heat that built after each delicious bite. It was such a work of art, I was tempted not to break into its canvas, but I quickly decided that was impossible. Narrowing down the extensive list of local specialties was daunting at best. We settled on the Pacific swordfish, sitting upon a spicy and satisfying smoked paprika chorizo broth, coupled perfectly with braised gigante beans and a crisp and refreshing orange and shaved fennel salad. Pause, close my eyes and remember. Our second choice was a tamarind braised lamb shank.

84
TRENDS IN DINING: CALA SCOTTSDALE

Thoughtfully paired with harissa honey glazed carrots with a cooling feta dill yogurt and cilantro. A knife was offered, it was not needed. I could have asked the meat to fall off the bone and it would have obliged.

I was tempted to ask if there was a quiet place I could lay down for a nap when four of the most decadent desserts were brought to the table for our last course. Sumptuous lemon butter cake with a scoop of handmade lavender ice cream, strawberry pavlova meringue with fresh berries, sinfully rich dolce de leche cheesecake with a salted pretzel crust, a dark chocolate semi fredo with fresh raspberries and mint. I guess it’s triple time at the gym tomorrow. Worth every single step. If you’ve ever had a meal that you still talk about, a meal that stands out as more of a memory than a dish, a taste that makes you close your eyes and transports you back to a memory that makes your mouth still water, Cala is the place to make that come back to life. I highly recommend you put this restaurant at the front of the line. Myself, I cannot wait to return to Cala and fill my memory again.
