REMEMBERING 2013 FABULOUS PHOENICIAN ...

Judd Herberger By Bill Dougherty

In life there are certain people that only come around once. To me and many others, Fabulous Phoenician Judd Herberger was certainly one of those people. I met Judd in 1991. I was at Patsy Lowry’s home for some thing, when Billie Jo arrived with a huge terrycloth white towel. She said she had just gone on a date with Judd Herberger. She had an amazing time with him. Billie Jo wanted him to remember her. So, she said, “I’ve come up with the gift for the man who has everything.” And with that she laid down on the white beach towel and had Patsy and I trace out her silhouette on the terry cloth. The couple married several months later. Judd Herberger, together with his bride Billie Jo, would eventually take the social world by storm. While he had quietly dabbled in the philan thropic world, once married they would become the couple that would never say no. Together the two designed a magnificent penthouse on the Scottsdale waterfront and there they would entertain on a constant basis. Arts organizations, the Phoenix Heart Ball, charter schools galore and about every other charity under the sun would pass thru their opulent home. There was never a charity too big or too small. Judd Herberger quickly became a force in the philanthropic world, and he was honored for a vast array of things he and his lovely wife helped to make better for those who were less fortunate. His father Robert Herberger became very successful by purchasing land in Scottdale as far back as the late 1940s. He was a man of ethics, work and education. These were things he passed on to both his older son Gary and younger brother Judd. Both worked seven-day-a-week sched ules, but always managed to find a zest for life. For Judd it was the sea and a long love of automobiles. I’ll never forget his Fabulous Phoenician speech in 2013. He spoke of the year 1959, where he was assigned at 16 years of age to valet autos for the Phoenix Heart Ball Thank You party at his parent’s home. He went on to talk about parking Chrysler Imperials, Cadillac Eldorados, Chevy Nomads and the cherished 1957 Lincoln Mark II. He said it was a sea of tail-finned autos, white evening gloves and cigarette holders. Judd had brilliantly captured perhaps the most elegant time in post war America. I’ll never forget that articulate and elegant speech. I wish I could have helped him park all those cars too. To know Judd Herberger was to love him. He was a brilliant man, an amazing conversationalist and one of the very best dressed gentlemen in town. His style, wit and compassion for the world around him, made him a man among men. He had an extraordinary life!

LA DOLCE VITA The Season October to May By Bill Dougherty People are talking about Beth McRae and Oscar De Las salas and the extraordinary amount of money the two chairs raised for TGen at “An Evening of Trends” 2021. Since my parents taught me that to talk of money is vulgar, let’s just say that the Phoenix-based genomics company should be very happy! After two years we were finally able to present our Fabulous Phoenician and 10 new Trendsetters to the community. It was a brilliant night. It was also the very first time the gala sold out since I purchased the publication in 2000. Courtney Beller and Mandy Holmes should be within everyone’s social radar range and I’m not talking microwave ovens! The other afternoon they completely sold out the Camelback Inn for the Arizona Humane Society’s luncheon “Compassion With Fashion.” The luncheon was founded by my mother-in-law (Betty McRae), my wife Beth, and her sister Stephanie McRae Campbell back in 1999 and tthe event has grown to an empyrean level. It was a smashing afternoon and everyone you know and adore was there. We were thrilled to see one of our very favorite Trendsetters Patty Withycombe honored for her tireless dedication to all things animal related. I especially enjoyed socializing with Anne-Marie Dobbs and Gwen Hillis. Ms. Hillis introduced to her equally lovely sister Suzy Juneau, who just moved to the Valley. Keep your eye on her too. She’s exquisite!

Just as we were going to print, we learned of the death of 1995 Fashionality (now called Trendsetter) and past Heart Ball Chair Julie Jackson Young. While she had not lived in Arizona for quite some time, her civic and charitable work in our community was notable. Ms. Jackson Young also served as a member of the Trends Charitable Fund board. She will be missed. GOTCHA!

It’s finally starting to seep out that a “poor me” socialite is anything but that. As the head of seating for several events, her family sat for free, undetected, until a very clever ball chair figured it out.

She and her husband were also upgraded (by her own hand) to dance-floor-level-table seats without paying for them. Two very

well-respected gentlemen told our offices that they witnessed her

SPOTLIGHT: WOMEN’S BOARD OF BARROW NEUROLOGICAL FOUNDATION

Helping Patients by Finding the Cures of Tomorrow Funding the Cure for Tomorrow Founded in 1965 to raise money for research at Barrow Neurological Institute, the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation has evolved into one of the most successful fundraising entities in the Valley, and the largest donor to Barrow. What started with $26,000 raised in support of the first Barrow Grand Ball, now represents over $83 million raised for Barrow through the annual event. Although this staggering number is impressive by itself, it only scratches the surface of how much Women’s Board funds have benefited Barrow, as well as the entire medical and scientific community. Thanks in large part to the efforts of the Women’s Board, Barrow Neurological Foundation has provided $49.8 million in funding for Barrow research programs in the last five years alone. This, in turn, has yielded an additional $84.2 million in national and other outside research funding. “Through philanthropic support from the Women’s Board and their generous donors, Barrow is able to fearlessly push the boundaries of neuroscience research and provide world-class patient care for the most complex neurological diseases,” says President and CEO of Barrow Neurological Institute, Michael T. Lawton, MD. Supporting Research The Petznick Stroke Center at Barrow Neurological Institute, which holds the highest level of certification a hospital can receive for the care of complex stroke patients, has benefited gratefully from Women’s Board support. Last year, the Women’s Board selected the Petznick Stroke Center as its special project recipient and provided funding that allowed for the purchase of a second mobile stroke unit. The specially equipped and staffed mobile unit has revolutionized stroke treatment by delivering expert care via telemedicine well before a patient arrives at the hospital. The

18

Jacquie Dorrance, Carrie Hall, Michael T. Lawton, MD, Katie Mueller

unit made 1,000 calls in fiscal year 2019, administering the clot-busting drug tPA in as little as six minutes after arrival. The gold standard for tPA administration is four hours. The speed with which patients receive treatment improves outcomes by minimizing brain damage. “There are angels all around us. I was truly blessed with a team of them who saved and touched my life that night and throughout my entire recovery,” recalls Jody Johnson, referring to the mobile unit team who saved her life when she suffered a stroke at home. For this year’s special project, the Women’s Board selected the revolutionary research of Dr. Zaman Mirzadeh, MD, PhD, who says the secret to curing diabetes lies within the brain, not the abdomen. “Diabetes is a problem of blood sugar control, not of blood sugar. If I fix the underlying cause, then blood sugar fixes itself,” he explains. Type 1 diabetes is marked by the pancreas’ inability to produce insulin; Type 2 is marked by cellular insulin resistance that causes the pancreas to overproduce insulin. Every organ in the body takes direction from the brain, notes Dr. Mirzadeh. In diabetes, the signal is scrambled before it even gets to the pancreas. He is beginning clinical trials in which he will inject a hormone (Type 1 diabetes) or a protein (Type 2 diabetes) into a patient’s brain. Preclinical studies showed the approaches stabilized blood-sugar levels, and for Type 1 diabetes, eliminated the need for insulin injections. If the clinical studies are successful, they could mark the next step in finding a cure for diabetes. “Dr. Mirzadeh is the perfect example of why Barrow is a global leader, known for challenging the conventional wisdom and breaking new ground. His innovative approach to solving diabetes was an easy choice for our special project this year,” says Carrie Hall, 2021-22 Women’s Board Chairman.

Advancing Education Education is another area of focused support for the Women’s Board. The 78,000 individuals who walk through the doors of Barrow each year represent just a small fraction of those facing debilitating neurological challenges. Education is the best way to extend the Institute’s expertise and help save more lives. Women’s Board funding is instrumental in helping Barrow train the next generation through residency and fellowship programs that allow them to hone their skills and knowledge while learning from worldrenowned physicians and scientists. In 2019, the Women’s Board special project was the Thurston Innovation Center, a unique program that trains residents in entrepreneurial thinking and medical device development. While most residencies teach only current medical techniques, Barrow sees the need to train physicians to ask the “what if” questions. This is how medicine expands and improves.

Barrow President and CEO Michael T. Lawton, MD, with Barrow residents

Since its inception in 2016, the Innovation Center at Barrow, which was launched through a matching Foundation grant, has developed more than two dozen leadingedge devices or techniques, filed for 100 patents, and created 1,000 3D spine models used to train for surgery. The Barrow Grand Ball Each year since 1965, the Women’s Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation has celebrated Barrow Neurological Institute’s cutting-edge research and innovative education efforts, while recognizing and thanking the generous philanthropists who support its mission.

Barrow Emergency Stroke Treatment Unit

This year’s Barrow Grand Ball Co-Chairs are Jacquie Dorrance and Katie Mueller. “Our interest in supporting Barrow centers on helping patients by finding the cures of tomorrow,” says Mueller. Dorrance adds, “When we and our donors give Barrow the resources to develop cures and new means of treatment, we save lives. Nothing is more satisfying than that.” The black-tie event will be held on January 22, 2022 at the historic, and newly reimagined, Arizona Biltmore.

TRENDY ETIQUETTE

Holiday Gratuity Giving Guide By Heather Wagenhals

Holidays are the traditional time to acknowledge and honor those who make your life simpler, giving you the ability to live your fully inspired life. Here are some simple guidelines to reward those who have served you exceptionally throughout the year and show how much you value them.

When deciding whom to tip, keep these things in mind: • Your budget (Avoid debt. You cannot give what you don’t have, and it is okay.) • Quality of service • Length of time it takes to complete service and frequency • Relationship tenure with the person(s)

• Housekeeper/staff/personal caregiver: one day’s pay if weekly, or up to one week’s pay for daily

Things to avoid:

• Landscapers: $20 for each regular crewmember

• Cash or gift cards for government employees (Gifts under $20 are acceptable)

• Beauty/barber/stylists/fitness trainer/massage therapist: Average cost of one service or small gift

• Intimate or personal gifts to colleagues, bosses, and subordinates

• Doorman/valet/garage attendant: $50-$100 or defined tip pool contribution

• Some corporate policies also forbid tipping. If you’d like to recognize regular delivery or service personnel, check with the company for what’s appropriate. A donation to a non-profit in their name also is appropriate.

• Elevator operators: $25-$50

To remember:

• Pool service/pest control: $25-50

• Tipping regularly allows a more modest acknowledgment at the holidays

• Pet care/grooming: one day’s service or small gift

• When in doubt, tip the cost of one extra service

• Sitter/daycare/tutor: one day’s pay and small gift or card from the child

• A few sentences in a greeting card or heartfelt handwritten note are personal, always appropriate, affordable, and the “right size”

Juvederm Voluma

JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is a facial filler made up of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that helps to bind water to cells. Its extensive cross-linking helps to provide an excellent lifting capacity, making it an excellent choice for restoring volume in the cheeks and midface.

WHAT IS JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC? As you age, the cheeks may flatten and the skin may begin to sag. This is caused by natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin's surface, which provides lift and contour to the cheek area.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

TRAVEL

Southern Hospitality By Julie A. Bowe and Dyan Getz

Having Southern roots, I appreciate the hospitality of the South: welcoming smiles, kind hearts, and a slower pace. Southern escapes are always on my bucket list and as a sophisticated sojourn, I look for luxurious amenities and superior service. The Montage Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina is a favorite of mine and apparently Justin Bieber’s too (he and Hailey quietly tied the knot there last June). My third return to this magical southern getaway was to attend a dear friend’s wedding. Nicole Cardon, an Arcadia widow and incredible mother of five, had found love once again with a wonderful man who had recently lost his wife to cancer. The tumultuous period in Nicole’s life had finally ended and in a traditional, white steeple-topped chapel, family and a few close friends gathered to watch a new chapter begin. Having ridden the storm with Nicole, I was genuinely honored to be witness to this exchange of vows.

Lily Pond Luxury – Travel Designers www.LilyPondLuxury.com Julie Bowe julie@lilypondluxury.com

Dyan Getz dyan@lilypondluxury.com

Whether tying the knot, rebooting a relationship, or searching for a family friendly destination, Palmetto will super charge the batteries. It is a special place to connect or reconnect physically and emotionally. Set within a charming 20,000-acre community (almost the size of Manhattan), the Montage extends access to a vast nature preserve which includes a water haven for bottle-nose dolphins and invites guests to wander via foot or via bike along trails under Spanish mosscovered trees. Relax by the pool or enter a state of bespoke luxury and relaxation at the spa. Sip sweet tea and venture along the May River aboard the restored 1913 yacht or tee it up on the Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. In the evening, rock your Old Fashioned in a front porch rocker during cocktail hour, then savor some southern fare at the Canoe Club in your Sunday best. The experience is truly enchanting!

AN EVENING OF TRENDS 2021 .A group of very influential people gathered at Montelucia Resort just the other evening. They were there to raise their respective glasses to one great Fabulous Phoenician Tim Braun and 10 new Trendsetters. The gala chaired by Beth McRae and Oscar De Las salas sold out. It also raised a tremendous amount of funds for TGen. A massive raffle, silent and live auction gave many merrymakers the chance to leave with phenomenal luxury items, vacation getaways and lasting experiences. Mark Tarbell’s coveted door prize of a private dining room dinner for eight, went to a guest seated at a Trendsetter’s table. Lin Sue Cooney emceed the bash, while Chris Weir assisted with amazing television production. Clyde Betts and team lent audio and visual effects. Chris Beckley made the room come alive with majestic sounds. Dennis Thompson and The White House Design Studio created absolute wonderment in the ballroom. Chandeliers, hung low over the runway, created additional panache as the Trendsetters sashayed down the runway to huge accolades. Sylvia Shoen regaled the guests with her incredible story of extremely serious cancer and miraculous recovery. And a huge thanks to Brianna Hall with Hallway Events and her team. Resort Living at the Mauna Kea By Christopher Coffin

Situated on the beautiful northwest coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, this home is part of the Mauna Kea Resorts private residential area. The Mauna Kea is a historic, upscale property built by the Rockefellers; with a hotel, stunning grounds and fabulous homes. It is steps away from the turquoise water of the Pacific Ocean that first made the Rockefeller family fall in love with the site and see its potential. The villa itself however was in desperate need of reaching its potential when the current owners purchased it four years ago. Still in its original condition they wanted their home in Hawaii to transform into a modern, resort-feeling sanctuary. The process needed to start with bringing more of the panoramic island views in. Mauna Kea sunsets will truly take your breath away with the picturesque ocean vistas below and the color-changing sky. It immediately took on a more indoor/outdoor experience when we took down the short windows that were in the great room and dining room area and replaced them with floor to ceiling sliding glass doors.

42

The doors open to the upper and lower lanai and pool deck and can be left open to let in the island breeze. The Koa wood in the home could easily be described as one of the stars of the show. Not only is this amazing, legendary wood indigenous, but it is known for the deep rich colors and varied grain pattern. Koa wood has honored heritage in Hawaii and is highly revered

and sacred. It was already used as trim in ceiling areas, and we added more, including using it for all of the cabinetry during the kitchen remodel. The gourmet kitchen is also outfitted with elegant and unique green marble countertops. For fabrics, we purposefully steered away from the typical tropical décor used often in Hawaii such as red, mustard yellow and green. We wanted bright, happy colors that would be a departure from what would be predictable. The homeowners get so many compliments on the blue and vivid yellow used on the sophisticated furnishings in the main room. The bedrooms all have their own personality and feature corals or fresh green and sky blue or a tiffany blue and white. The furniture can withstand a wet bathing suit and is stress free with regard to maintenance, because all of the fabrics are indoor/outdoor high performance. One special find we added glistens above the dining room table. It is a gold chandelier with spikes that bring to mind a sea urchin, making it the perfect fit for a beachy vibe. The makeover has been magical as the villa has turned into a comfortable, luxurious home offering a quintessential modern vacation dwelling experience while subtly recalling the Rockefeller-era glamour for which the resort is famous. My clients only use their home one month out of the year and have the home in the rental pool within the Mauna Kea Resort so others may have the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful home.

INNER-VIEW QUESTIONS FOR AIMEE AND OLIVER SMITH

How Creating Jewelry can be a Successful Family Venture How did you get into the fine jewelry business? Started selling jewelry on the side in 1981 and found I enjoyed the transaction. People were happy! They were usually buying for a nice/ important occasion or a personal accomplishment. How long have you been in business and how many locations have you had? This year I’ll be celebrating 40 years in business. I have 2 locations. One in Aspen and one in Scottsdale. What is the biggest challenge in your business? My business is a long-term strategy. It’s a great business if you think of success in decades. Challenges are gold prices, diamond prices, synthetic diamonds, cheap knock offs, poor quality manufacturers,

liars, cheats. Since jewelry is a completely unregulated business, you always have to go with a business that has stood the test of time! Who inspired your craft? My brother was making furniture when I was young and I learned a lot from him. It’s very rewarding to create a piece that someone will have for generations! I’m inspired by old manufacturers that never took short cuts, and always produced a quality product: Cartier, Aldo Cipullo, David Webb, Van Cleef, Verdura. What changes or trends do you see for the future of the jewelry business? Men are starting to wear more diamond jewelry. LeBron wore 5 diamond necklaces this spring at a Suns’ playoff game sitting court side. I see some nice growth in this category.

44

What is the biggest mistake people make when buying fine jewelry? They buy the piece and not the manufacturer. Trust your eye, regardless of what the salesman is saying. Buy only quality and know the diamond grades! Where do you see your business in 5 years? We are expanding our Scottsdale location for a bigger presence in the watch business. The watch business is on fire and we are right in the middle of it. You Tube is going to be a big driver of business for us in the next 5 years. Are you recruiting any family members into the jewelry business? My two daughters work for us. Elizabeth is returning to Scottsdale this month after running Aspen for the past 3 years. Corinne just got her Graduate Gemologist degree. They both bring excellent skills in different areas. I love working with my family. What 7 people living or dead would you invite to your dinner party? (please answer collectively or individually) Oliver, Muhammad Ali, Louis Cartier, My Grandfather I never met, E. Leidy Brendlinger, Dr. J, Donald Fagan, Walter Paepcke, and Picasso

TRENDY READING

Small Space, Big Taste By Tricia Leach Don’t let the title of this amazing cookbook fool you. It’s chalked full of some of the most unbelievable recipes imaginable. Tricia Leach first gained fame with her YouTube channel “Keep Your Daydream.” After realizing its success, she decided to embark on a cookbook. However, there were substantial changes to her life down the road, literally. For six months she her husband and their three children took to the open road and sampled local cuisine. Five years later they were still on the road and cooking up a storm. Many cookbooks are complicated and hard to maneuver. This is not one of those. There are easy step-by-step instructions on the author’s personal blends, which are also available for sale, and guide to small-space cooking bowls and utensils, grocery shopping and Ms. Leach’s very own “Keys to Cooking.” The book also serves as a wonderful travel guide, as the Leach family cavasses the world blending local food into contemporary recipes with a hip flare. Anyone who enjoys cooking should purchase this book. It’s out of the box, fun and an odyssey in tastes and epicurean ventures.

SOMETHING DIFFERENT • The rehearsal dinner and welcome party were held at Gorrono Ranch, where the attire was mountain chic. • As the bride’s “something blue”, her bridesmaids wore midnight navy wide-leg jumpsuits. • The night before the bid day, the bride wore her great-grandmother’s opal ring, which is coincidentally her birthstone. • In lieu of a guest book, guests signed a pair of vintage, wooden snow skis. • The couple met in the summer of 2014 at an Irish pub in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago.
